FOR INAUGURAL REDLAND CITY MAYOR’S CHRISTMAS APPEAL

Expressions of Interest are now open for community groups and charitable organisations wishing to become charity partners for the inaugural Redland City Mayor’s Christmas Appeal.

Mayor Jos Mitchell said the Appeal aimed to bring the community together and make it easier for residents to support those in need during the festive season.

“The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is all about uniting our community and providing a simple way for people to donate directly to help others,” the Mayor said. “Every contribution will help make Christmas a little bit brighter for vulnerable individuals and families across our city.”

The Appeal is seeking two community-focused charity partners to facilitate online donations.

Eligible organisations must be registered charities, capable of establishing a dedicated online donation page for the Appeal, and able to issue tax-deductible receipts.

“It is also important that 100 per cent of the funds raised through the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal go to projects or programs that benefit Redlands Coast residents, particularly those impacted by domestic and family violence, homelessness or other forms of hardship,” the Mayor said.

Charity partners will be selected through a random draw from all eligible organisations that meet the assessment criteria and terms outlined in the online Expression of Interest (EOI) form.

Full eligibility details and submission requirements are available via the Expression of Interest submission form, which is available at redland.qld.gov.au. Applications close at 11.59pm on Thursday 6 November 2025.

Details on how the community can donate to the 2025 Redland City Mayor’s Christmas Appeal will be announced in late November.

CARNIVAL IS ME AUTOBIOGRAPHY

This 300-page autobiography, “Carnival is Me” traces the life experiences of one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most talented exports. Aldwyn Rostant, known as Alvin, is a professional musician, pannist, award winning steel pan composer and arranger, MC and entertainer residing in Australia. The steelpan is a musical instrument originating in Trinidad and Tobago.

Redlands Coast residents are being urged to get ready now to ensure they are as prepared as possible for this year’s bushfire season.

Redland City Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair Jos Mitchell said the severe bushfire that swept through the top end of Moreton Island on the long weekend earlier this month was a reminder not to be complacent.

“Building our resilience against natural disasters needs to start well before an event. It needs to start now,” the Mayor said.

TAKING ENROLMENTS FOR 2026

“Carnival is Me” begins at Trinidad’s Carnival in 1952 and finishes with Alvin’s original musical composition Carnival is Me which was released 2021 with the Supernova’s Steel Orchestra, doing a Steelband arrangement of the song.

“You should know your risk, prepare an emergency kit and ensure you have a bushfire survival plan in place for your household.

“Simple steps you can take include clearing debris from roofs and gutters, trimming branches that overhang dwellings and removing overgrown vegetation.

“It is also worth noting that the Moreton Island fire impacted approximately 2300 hectares and is believed to have been sparked by a campfire within an active fire ban zone.

“Please check when and where there are fire bans and please respect them.”

Alvin has toured the USA, Canada and the South Pacific with Amral Khan’s Trinidad Calypso Cavaliers. He also held an Intercollege Soccer Record which was only equalled in November 2020. He was the only person to have scored in two inter-college soccer finals in 1969 and 1971, which makes him part of a rare group of players to have accomplished this feat.

Alvin received the Australian Prime Minister’s Award for Community in 2001 for Mission Australia’s project ‘Beat of the Drum’, which was written and coordinated by Alvin.

“You don’t have to live in bushland to be threatened by bushfires, just close enough to be affected by burning material, embers, and smoke,” she said.

He has sung the West Indie’s cricket anthem in some of Australia’s biggest stadiums - the M.C.G. (Melbourne Cricket Ground), W.A.C.A. Ground (Western Australia Cricket Association), The Gabba (Brisbane Cricket Ground).

The Queensland Fire Department website advises that the bushfire itself was only one part of the danger.

Fire embers (small pieces of burning bark, leaves and twigs) can be caught in the wind and travel many kilometres from where the bushfire is burning and cause spot fires.

Alvin represented the Caribbean at the 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony and remains Australia’s Ambassador of the Steel Drum.

The radiant heat from a large bushfire can be felt more than 100m away and can melt or crack objects such as glass windows, allowing embers into buildings and vehicles.

“The more of Alvin’s story I heard the more I could see the reflection of his story in a rapidly changing societal landscape that provided a backdrop to each part of his life, the opportunity, the expansion, the serendipity he experienced all reflect the greater changes in the world at that time.”

OIL AND PETROL SPILLS ON FRONT LAWN COULD AFFECT WATER TASTE

Changing your car’s oil on the front lawn may help your car run better, but there is a chance it could end up leaving a bad taste in your mouth.

Fuel and oil spills can infiltrate your underground plumbing pipes and affect the taste of your drinking water.

Redland City Council is reminding Redlands Coast residents during National Water Week 2025 that householders may be inadvertently compromising their own water supply.

Household plastic pipes laid underground can absorb chemicals (petrol, diesel, oil, turps, methylated spirits and some pesticides) if they are spilled or sprayed on the ground.

Do not drink the water if you believe this has occurred. It is advisable to check with your neighbours to confirm if they are experiencing a similar taste or odour from their drinking water.

If the taste or odour is isolated to your property, you will need to contact a licensed plumber to assist in resolving this issue. If your neighbours are also experiencing the issue, call Council on 07 3829 8999.

Remember to be careful where you work on your car and to always use a drip tray or bucket large enough to catch spills, and be sure to dispose of motor oils correctly.

The same applies when parking boats on front lawns to work on engines with the added consideration that the weight of boats and other vehicles has the potential to damage underground pipes.

More information is available on Council’s waste and recycling webpage.

This year’s National Water Week runs until 26 October and is an initiative of the Australian Water Association as a way of reminding everyone that water must be used wisely.

Residents can recycle their waste motor oil (maximum of 20 litres per visit) free of charge at any of the city’s recycling and waste centres, except Karragarra and Lamb islands.

For more tips on how to be wise with water, check out Council’s City Water webpage.

Logan City Council has kicked off its annual mosquito management program to help the community stay ahead of the summer surge. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water and thrive in warm temperatures, humidity and rain.

As well as causing itchiness and irritation, mozzies can spread diseases to both humans and animals.

OPEN SEASON ON PESKY MOZZIES

Council officers are actively inspecting and treating more than 760 water-holding sites across the city, including freshwater breeding grounds in parks and water ponding in ditches or drains.

Treatments eliminate mosquito larvae before they hatch, reducing the mosquito population before it becomes a problem.

All products used are safe for people, pets and the environment.

Residents can manage mozzies around their homes by tipping out any standing water, which provides ideal breeding conditions for the pests.

For more information and tips on mozzie-proofing your property, visit Mosquitoes.
