Welcome TO SEWE 2026

Dear Friends of SEWE,

On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors, welcome to Charleston and the 44th annual Southeastern Wildlife Exposition as our city once again comes to life for a threeday celebration of wildlife art and the sporting life.

Our staff has spent the year preparing new and memorable experiences for you, while also bringing back the SEWE traditions we all know and love. Planning for 40,000 guests to descend upon Charleston is a rewarding challenge and one we take seriously. The impact you make on our artists, exhibitors, and the City of Charleston cannot be overstated. You are the reason we are still here after 44 years. Each year, SEWE produces stories of new friendships and connections that lead to great things . W e can’t wait to hear yours.

SEWE has so much to offer, and we hope you will take the full weekend to explore each site and celebrate the hundreds of artists and exhibitors joining us from across the country. Our 2026 Featured Artist, Henry Von Genk III, created an iconic Lowcountry piece, Charleston Splendor, which must be seen in person to be fully appreciated.

We thank our artists and exhibitors for often traveling great distances and working alongside staff to create our five primary exhibit sites. We are also thankful for our many conservation partners who help us keep this weekend and the natural places we love Wild Now, and Wild Forever.

As always, we thank our Corporate Partners, participants in the SEWE VIP Program, and all who work to secure both public and private support. This incredible weekend is possible because of you.

Have a wonderful time in Charleston, and thank you for your continued support of the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition.

With Gratitude,

John G. Powell

Welcome to SEWE 2026 !

Welcome FROM MAYOR COGSWELL

This is always a wonderful time of year in Charleston. After the bustle of the holiday season and before our springtime activities begin to ramp up, the city dives into another unforgettable Southeastern Wildlife Exposition.

As a SEWE regular myself, I’m always excited to watch the Center for Birds of Prey demonstrations, cheer on the Dock Dogs, and explore the incredible art displayed across the city. As we head into the 44th annual showcase, I’m especially looking forward to some of the new offerings like the live art series, the expanded Sporting Showroom, and the work of this year’s Featured Artist, Henry Von Genk III.

SEWE continues to blend wildlife art, conservation, and outdoor heritage into an event that feels uniquely Charleston. With incredible demonstrations, thoughtful educational moments, and a community of artists and conservationists who bring so much passion to their craft, it remains one of the most anticipated and meaningful weekends of the year.

I am so grateful to be able to attend such a wonderful, thoughtful, and inspiring event each year, and I hope you’ll join in making SEWE 2026 another memorable celebration of wildlife, art, and community.

Onward & Upward,

IN THE GALLERY BY SEWE NOW THROUGH JUNE 2026

Set life alight.

IN GEORGIA’S HISTORIC HIGH COUNTRY

It started with nature. Speci cally, 3,000 acres of breathtaking forests, elds and fairways that all yearn to be explored. We simply made it an experience, with opportunities to play, dine and explore among newly renovated accommodations, with elevated dining from acclaimed chef Shaun Doty at our newly opened signature restaurant Jules, shooting and quail hunting at the Beretta Shooting Grounds and so much more in this natural wonder we call home.

2026 FEATURED ARTIST

Henry Von Genk III

Commission Piece

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Henry Von Genk III is a self-taught oil painter known for richly detailed coastal landscapes. He employs glazing and shadowing techniques inspired by the Old Masters and the Hudson River School to create depth and radiance. After a successful career executing large-scale murals for museums and private collectors, he now focuses on fine art that celebrates the waterways and salt marshes of the East Coast.

The 2026 Featured Painting offers a peaceful Lowcountry scene : a white heron perched in marsh grasses beneath a pastel evening sky alive with luminous cumulus clouds.

“ This painting lived in my mind for two years and SEWE was the perfect way to bring it to life ,” Henry shares. “ As a private pilot, I have a deep love for clouds. The golden hour light on my favorite cumulus shapes with the Lowcountry as a backdrop is my idea of heaven. It sums up everything I love about Charleston in one image .”

Before SEWE weekend, Charleston Splendor will be on view at Gallery by SEWE inside The Charleston Place, 205 Meeting Street in downtown Charleston. The work will be offered at auction during the SEWE VIP Gala and Sale on Thursday, February 12.

I feel a responsibility to capture the world we live in for the future, much like the Hudson River painters did before cameras. I am thrilled to share that passion as SEWE’s 2026 Featured Artist

Avian Conservation Center and Center for Birds of Prey Marion Square

The Avian Conservation Center / Center for Birds of Prey was founded in 1991 as the Charleston Raptor Center as a medical treatment facility for injured birds of prey. The name of the organization evolved in 1994 to the South Carolina Center for Birds of Prey, and in 2002 to the umbrella Avian Conservation Center with the Center for Birds of Prey as its principal operating entity, all to more accurately reflect the growing disciplines, reach and influence of the organization. As the nonprofit organization marked its 30th year in 2021, it is primarily focused in four defined areas :

AVIAN HEALTH

The professional treatment of injured birds is a source of incomparable insight into critical environmental issues. The Avian Medical Clinic currently treats more than 1,000 injured raptors and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. Although the causes of injuries vary widely, nearly all are human-related - ranging from gunshot wounds to collisions, electric shock from power lines, and toxicity. The medical functions of the Center operate on a 365day basis. Injured birds are admitted from a continually widening geographical area.

CONSERVATION EDUCATION

The educational programs of the Center are offered within two general formats : on-site and off-site. Each year, thousands of students are engaged in the Center’s science and natural history based educational programs. Decades of experience and evaluations consistently provided from educators demonstrate that these programs capture attention, enhance retention of subject material, and foster a renewed enthusiasm for learning – all of which contribute to an overall improvement in academic performance. The experiential

programs offered by the Center also promote an awareness and appreciation for the natural world and our respective roles as stewards in its preservation. The power and beauty of birds of prey cast them as unparalleled ambassadors in public educationexemplifying both the intellectual and ethical aspects of conservation management.

RESEARCH

Research and field studies combine with the objectives of the medical and educational programs to support the protection of wild bird populations and their critical habitat areas.

The Center has led and participated in groundbreaking scientific research including avian genetics, environmental toxins, and an ongoing study of endangered and threatened species in South Carolina such as the Swallow-tailed kite. The Center’s work is well recognized in connection with environmental threats like the emergence of avian vacuolar myelinopathy ( AVM ) among eagles and other birds, and mortality resulting from under regulated landfill substances. A “ citizen science ” approach to a number of initiatives encourages the public to become active contributors to wildlife conservation and raises public awareness of vital ecological issues.

SC OILED BIRDS TREATMENT FACILITY

The Avian Conservation Center is designated in the USCG Area Contingency Plan as the official repository for oiled birds in South Carolina and maintains situational readiness in this crucial role. Constructed with a grant from U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the Center’s combined use Avian Medical Center / Oiled Bird Treatment Facility was completed in October 2007. The facility is designed and equipped to provide the highest quality medical care available for injured birds of prey and shorebirds on a daily basis, and, as the only

permanent avian treatment center of its kind on the Eastern seaboard, affords the most efficient response possible in the event of a contaminant spill affecting native bird populations and their fragile breeding habitats along the South Carolina coast.

The Avian Conservation Center/Center for Birds of Prey has enjoyed long and productive relationships with Federal and State agencies and other relevant organizations since its inception. The Center has worked closely with the SC Department of Natural Resources in numerous areas over the years, including :

Support of law enforcement, providing consultation, evidence collection and storage, and forensic services.

• Formation of the SC Toxicity Working Group of which SCDNR is a participant, in response to bald eagle deaths in landfills

• Providing medical care to 14,000 + injured birds of prey and shorebirds

• As a training and instructional resource for SCDNR officers

• Fielding thousands of public inquiries regarding birds and other wildlife in support of SCDNR and associated public expectations

• Osprey nesting platforms and relocations where appropriate

• Contaminant spill preparedness and response

The Center is staffed by 8 full time and 4 part-time employees with more than 80 years of combined avian experience. The small but effective staff is supported by a league of extensively trained and dedicated volunteer staff members who contribute more than 15,000 hours every year. The current annual operating budget for the organization is $ 825,000, the majority of which comes from philanthropic sources.

DID YOU KNOW . . . ?

Each year, thousands of birds in South Carolina are injured by collisions with automobiles and man-made structures, electrical shock, gunshots, poisoning, nest destruction and other human related causes. The Avian Conservation Center mitigates some of this damage to wildlife by admitting and treating hundreds of birds of prey and shorebirds each year, releasing the majority back to their natural habitat. The center’s professional medical staff, with the support of more than 15,000 volunteer staff hours, treats more than 800 injured birds of prey and shorebirds in its Medical Center each year.

Public Sculpture Initiative

Presented by Southeastern Wildlife Exposition

SEWE’s public sculpture initiative continues to stand as a cornerstone of our mission to celebrate and preserve art and history across South Carolina. In 2024, SEWE partnered with The Citadel to unveil the restored South Carolina Army National Guard Panel, a historic work created by renowned Charleston sculptor Willard Hirsch in 1953. Originally featured on Cold War era armories across the state, the panel’s relocation and meticulous restoration were made possible through SEWE’s public sculpture program, the Hirsch family, and the dedicated efforts of volunteers and donors statewide.

Now prominently displayed at Johnson Hagood Stadium, this iconic piece remains a powerful testament to SEWE’s commitment to honoring South Carolina’s rich history while advancing public art as an enduring cultural legacy.

In 2024, SEWE proudly introduced The Three Graces to Gallery by SEWE, a stunning addition to the gallery in downtown Charleston. Created by celebrated sporting artist Joseph H. Sulkowski in collaboration with sculptor Diana Reuter-Twining, this captivating piece brings three hounds to life in a breathtaking three-dimensional orb. Inspired by Sulkowski’s mural-sized painting APOKALUPSIS : An Uncovering, the sculpture symbolizes love, beauty, and joy with extraordinary depth and artistry.

These remarkable works join SEWE’s growing sculpture trail, which includes installations at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park and the Charleston Visitor Center. Together, they highlight SEWE’s ongoing dedication to making art and history accessible and meaningful across the Lowcountry.

As we look ahead to 2026 and beyond, SEWE remains steadfast in our mission to expand this legacy, creating spaces where wildlife, artistry, and heritage converge for generations to come.

Host an Artist Program

SEWE can always count on our local Charleston community to be a huge supporter of the arts. For nearly 44 years, we have invited and hosted talented artists from across the country to showcase at SEWE. We have helped launch many successful creative careers. These artists are at the heart of our event, but as the popularity of our event has grown, so have the costs for artists to attend. In addition to travel costs, artists are responsible for crating and shipping their work from their studio to our Fine Art Gallery. By donating to our Host an Artist Program your money will help reduce the costs that our SEWE artist have to incur throughout the weekend. Because of donors like you, we can continue to support our artist through the SEWE weekend. Thank you in advance for donating and please know that it means so much to each artist.

Donors will receive:

Special recognition at SEWE 2026

Listing on signage in the Fine Art Gallery

A badge/ticket embellishment noting participation for artist recognition

Anyone participating as a Fine Art Supporter who is not already a Patron or Benefactor will receive admittance to the Private Preview Hours on Thursday afternoon.

Contributions to the Host an Artist Program may be made at any time during SEWE weekend by visiting the VIP Lounge in The Charleston Place.

Each year kids from around the country have a chance to show off their artistic talents and learn about conservation with the Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest, a federal contest with a big prize : a commemorated special edition U.S. stamp.

The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition has continued its partnership with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service for the 2024-2025 South Carolina Junior Duck Stamp Contest, sponsored by Ducks Unlimited.

The SCDNR had managed the SC Junior Duck Stamp program through 2011, but because of budget cuts the program became at risk of being discontinued and other sources of funding had to be found. To ensure the program’s continuation, SEWE partnered with SCDNR in 2012 to assume the administration of the program and Ducks Unlimited, the world leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation, came on as the sponsor helping to keep the program available to more than 700,000 students in South Carolina.

The Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest is a dynamic educational program using both conservation and design principles to teach wetland habitat and waterfowl biology to children, K-12. The program provides an opportunity for students to artistically

SEWE could not have successfully transitioned nor continued the program under its administration without the help and support of South Carolina Ducks Unlimited. SOUTH

express their knowledge of the diversity, interdependence, and beauty of wildlife.

In 2025, more than 100 public, private and home-schooled South Carolina students participated. Competing in four grade groups ( K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12 ) , they created visually compelling and biologically accurate drawings or paintings of eligible North American waterfowl species. Students were encouraged to include a conservation message with their artwork explaining what they learned from the program and to inspire others to participate in conservation.

In addition to twelve prize winners, an overall “ Best of Show ” was selected to represent South Carolina in the National Junior Duck Stamp Contest, where it competed with the winning entrants from all 50 states, the American Samoa and the Virgin Islands to become the 2023-2024 collective Federal Junior Duck Stamp. Sold by the U.S. Postal Service and other vendors, all proceeds from the Stamp sales help support environmental and conservation education efforts.
