CAMPUS CROSSROADS

The Hobble Academic Building serves as a control center and point of connection for students. This is the place to find support and collaboration, from financial aid and enrollment offices to lecture halls, labs and classrooms. State-of-the-art science labs are equal to those found at four-year universities, and enable distance-learning lectures with partner colleges. This building also houses the journalism lab, where students create our national award-winning newspaper, Crusader. Our sunlit, spacious library offers traditional and innovative research materials, along with live musical performances and lunch-hour lectures.

Students can access one-on-one help in the Math Resource and Writing Centers, and tutoring rooms.

Outside the Shank Humanities Building is the college’s outdoor performance space, which we use to host large meetings, ice cream socials, spring fiesta, concerts and live theater.

Inside, you’ll find the Showcase Theater, which hosts the community symphony and so many performances that the college is known as a cultural oasis on the High Plains region.

Shank also houses humanities classrooms, 2- and 3-D art studio space, and music rooms for choir, instrumental and jazz band, and individual practice.

An ever-changing display of student and instructor work transforms the triangular hallways into gallery space.

Saints fans call this The Greenhouse, and it comes alive for men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball.

SCCC boasts the highest sports-event attendance among community colleges in the nation, with support from community buyout partners so every game is free to fans. Every day, athletes of all levels use this building for workouts in the Wellness Center, the indoor pool, tai chi, zumba and yoga classes, athleticteam training, and even archery classes.

OUTDOOR SPORTS Baseball and softball have a long and rich heritage here, and the field reflects it: our baseball program has sent more than 80 players to the major leagues. Brent Gould Baseball field also serves as home to the Liberal Bee Jays, a semi-pro summer baseball team. Tennis courts see play in the fall and spring, and our outdoor challenge course is a popular means for team-building exercises on campus and in the community.

Tennis at Blue Bonnet brings out-of-town tournaments to Liberal’s own park facilities. Construction of a new, indoor practice facility will expand the on-campus options for tennis players.

Challenge Course is a popular means of team-building

exercises for student ambassadors and clubs, as well as community groups.

Holiday Hustle and Connections Trail offers

more options to get moving outdoors. Our Trail System, still expanding, will connect the various sections of SCCC’s main campus with community parks, businesses, and other attractions.

Champions Center as part of the Capital Campaign,

the Champions Center will provide indoor athletic facilties for a variety of SCCC and community sports. Construction for this multi-purpose facility is planned to begin in 2018.

Inside our Student Union, colorful flags honor international connections. Students from 29 countries study, eat and play ping-pong and pool. The Saints Bookstore creates a coffee house atmosphere with free cappuccino and cocoa on Tuesdays. Our cafeteria serves steak and shrimp twice a month, Sunday brunch every weekend, and keeps cooking even on snow days. Events like Thanksgiving dinner, Trick or Treat Street, and Hispanic Heritage Month keep the union bustling. You might get free manicure, take in a magic show or win the dodge ball championship. Or you can just kick back and relax with friends, over a Guitar Hero session.

offers full-service meals, including steak-and-shrimp nights, weekend brunches, holiday events, and Moonlight Finals Breakfast. Specialty bars provide ethnic and make-your-own variety.

Student Union attractions include Guitar Hero, free coffee Tuesdays from the Saints Bookstore, and special events featuring student musicians and cosmetology services.

STUDENT LIVING

Dorm life offers a mixture of camaraderie and independence, an opportunity to meet people from all over the world, share the everyday challenges, and grow.

The college and this county have one of the most diverse populations in the nation. Get to know classmates over a backyard barbecue, or at sponsored events like Superbowl Sunday and Dorm-a-palooza, where water slides, bouncy houses, and free entertainment help build community.

While many students live off-campus, our dorm life offers a classic college experience, including an apartment option at Hale Court, and four-student suites in the two-stor, recently renovated Mansions just across the courtyard from the main dormitory.

AGRICULTURE

An outdoor classroom planted with diverse trees and grasses, a field planted with rotating crops and two top-of-the-line greenhouses give agriculture students an edge. Crops grow year-round, and students enjoy the freedom to experiment with a variety of methods from propagation to cultivation and harvest.

Our sustainable agriculture program includes “hoop style” greenhouses designed to use innovative methods to produce high-value crops that can transform the nation’s food supply and the future of farming.

Agriculture building combines lab-style spaces, lecture rooms, and farm operation arena and shed.

Show arena

From Farm-Bureau days for elementary children to FFA competitions and auction fundraisers, the arena provides ample space for exploration and development.

Outdoor classroom

A collaborative project with K-State, the state of Kansas, and SCCC, this outdoor biology and ecology lab provides hands-on learning.

Four-acre farm plots

Whether it’s crop cultivation by students or community members enrolled in innovative classes, “The Farm” at SCCC is a vibrant place.

Multiple greenhouses

From fully-constructed buildings to convertible, movable hoop houses, concrete- and topsoil-floored structures, the greenhouses allow students to grow. A new hydroponics and aquaponics lab is also being developed.

COSMETOLOGY Whether you’re a student or a client, you’ll savor the salon atmosphere inside the cosmetology building.

Students learn the art of beauty for hair, nails and makeup in a professional atmosphere. Monthly specials bring a steady stream of customers on campus, and students stage fashion revues twice a year with customcrafted themes, live models and cutting-edge design. Classrooms adjacent to the studio space give students a quiet study area and provide lecture instruction to enhance the hands-on practice.

TRUCK DRIVING COURSE

Truck driving training takes place partly in the classroom, partly in the shop and partly on the road. Through unique partnerships with the Kansas Department of Transportation, our CDL program offers students the opportunity to complete a six-week course of study, log real-life drive time required for licensure, and even sit for the exam with instructors on campus. As the program expands to a 10-week model, more classroom time will ensure students graduate with a strong start on an associate of applied science, should they choose to continue. In the meantime, class is an even mix of desk and drive time.

INDUSTRIAL TECH The Industrial Technology division of the college is in the habit of doing big, powerful things, one task at a time.

Starting with the career-counseling and Business & Technology offices, students and professionals can sharpen their vision of how to create and contribute to the engines that drive our economy. In this building, students gain access to entry-level classes, from GED instruction to Certified Nursing and Medical Assistant courses. You can also explore a variety of disciplines, from drafting and a cutting-edge 3D printer, to automotive business management practices through the on-campus retail outlet. Students across campus can refuel at the snack shop and union area.

MANUFACTURING TRADES

Technological advances make cutting metal as easy as slicing butter — and students in the welding and machine-tool technology labs get hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment. The shops enable instructors to blend the centuries-old traditions of metallurgy and smithing with 21st-century, computercontrolled precision. Classroom instruction splits between on-site study and lectures at the Hobble Academic Building in the center of campus. The rigor of the machine programs has earned the college a spot on the industry-standard “M-List,” coveted by manufacturing employers.

AUTO TRADES

A mixture of old-school, under-thehood garage and high-tech advances, automotive and auto-body instruction give students hands-on, shop experience. The automotive department tackles real-life repair jobs, rebuilds engines and in collaboration with other industrial tech departments, it even designed and built its own patented motorcycle. As with all our programs, we emphasize classroom and academic achievement along with real-life, employable skills. Students working in the shops have the added benefit of earning master-level certifications.

We’re the only college in Kansas to offer that level of instruction.

ENERGY TRADES

One of the fastest-growing, high-demand, high-wage specializations in the oil and gas industry, corrosion technology also applies to municipal and manufacturing ventures. Our stateof-the-art program is so advanced, we partner with international training groups to offer high-demand workshops every year.

Employers in the region jostle to train their own workers, and hire our graduates straight out of school. Our corrosion classes take place in classroom and lab settings, utilizing Computer Aided Drafting systems, and remote monitoring. Students also practice what they’ve learned in our industry-identical pipeline simulator field adjacent to the classroom building.

EPWORTH ALLIED HEALTH Our community’s original hospital has been transformed over the years to become a powerhouse of healthcare for the region. The Epworth Allied Health Center hosts programs for nursing, respiratory therapy, medical lab technology, certified nursing assistant, and, in an adjacent building, surgical technology. Students learn in the classroom, through online lectures, and in a variety of labs. The program includes a mock hospital ward, an emergency room/ operating room simulator, and partnerships with healthcare providers across the western half of the state. The approach has proven fruitful, as the nursing program is ranked #1 in the state and maintains a continuous waiting list of applicants.

Through a capital campaign currently under way, construction on a new Allied Health building is slated to begin in 2018.

In the Surgical Technology lab building, students prepare for an active role in surgeries of all kinds. The simulated lab area offers a wide range of surgical scenarios and utilizes an array of supplies and procedures favored by various surgeons. After they complete online study, real-life instruction and simulated lab sessions, students go on to gain clinical experience at area hospitals before they complete certificates and become eligible for full-time employment.

COLVIN ADULT LEARNING CENTER A core element of our identity as a community college is the promise that any person can access education, and the Colvin Center makes that happen. A walk-in center located near the business district of Liberal, the center serves more than 500 students annually in a modest building full of colorful life experiences, foreign languages, and high hopes.

Students from Somalia, Sudan, Burma, Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba, and the United States are just part of the mix. The center offers Adult Basic Education classes, English as a Second Language and the Graduation Equivalence Diploma, or GED, year-round. It’s never too late to start, and never too high to reach for more.
