Seward is one of Alaska’s oldest communities. Our ice-free port has long served as a natural gateway to Alaska’s resource-rich interior. Here are a few historical highlights, dating back to our region’s First Peoples.
It Starts in Seward
The Iditarod National Historic Trail is a 2,300-mile trail network originally established to deliver mail and supplies by dog team from Seward to remote Alaska Native villages. Long before modern transportation, mushers braved harsh winters to connect communities across the territory. From the Iditarod Monument, retrace their path as you walk north along the paved trail toward the harbor.
Designer of the State Flag
Benny Benson, an Alutiiq boy living in Seward, was 13 years old when he won a contest in 1927 to design the flag for the Territory of Alaska. Benny’s iconic design featuring the Big Dipper and North Star remains today. The Benny Benson Memorial north of the Lagoon honors this beloved Alaskan.
America's Oldest Mountain Race
Folklore tells of two locals who debated whether Mount Marathon could be climbed and descended in under an hour.
To settle the wager (with the loser buying drinks) a Fourth of July race was held. The winning time: one hour and two minutes. The first official race followed in 1915, and today brave runners of all ages, including generations of Alaska families, take on the mountain each July 4th.
Created by the Seward Historic Preservation Commission , the Seward Historical Walking Tour includes 46 sites, with 26 interpretative panels throughout downtown Seward showcasing our town’s rich history. Start the tour wherever you’d like after picking up a map at the Seward Visitor Center
Seward Mariners’ Memorial is a quiet, waterfront tribute honoring mariners who have lost their lives at sea or shaped Seward’s maritime heritage, offering a place for reflection with sweeping views of Resurrection Bay.

KALANI WOODLOCK
Bought Alaska for Pocket Change
Seward was named after President Lincoln’s Secretary of State, William Henry Seward, who negotiated the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867 for the bargain price of two cents per acre. Though the treaty was mocked by some at the time, “Seward’s Folly” is now regarded as a masterful deal.
The Big One Changed Everything
Seward was devastated by the Good Friday Earthquake on March 27, 1964. The 9.2 magnitude quake - the secondlargest ever recorded - triggered landslides, fires, and a local tsunami that reshaped the waterfront. Seward rebuilt, and its resilience remains part of its identity today. Learn more in the film Waves Over Seward, shown daily during the summer at the Seward Community Library & Museum

WHAT’S THE POPULATION OF SEWARD?
Our seaside city is home to approximately 2,600 year-round residents with another 2,600 living in the areas outside of city limits. During the summer, our population nearly doubles as seasonal workers arrive to support our tourism and commercial fishing industries.
WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS?
Possibly, from late September through April, when the skies are dark enough. Your ability to see the aurora depends on good solar flare activity and clear skies. We do get some spectacular northern lights, but due to our coastal location and frequent clouds, our displays are not as reliable as what you might find further north.
DOES SEWARD HAVE EVERYTHING I NEED FOR A COMFORTABLE STAY?
Our small community boasts a full range of services to meet your needs and keep you comfortable during your stay, including a hospital, library, post office, public showers, pharmacy, outdoor gear rentals, and more. See pp.7679 for a full list of local services.
IS SEWARD PET FRIENDLY?
It’s a dog’s life in Seward! Feel free to bring your well-behaved and leashed pup on most local trails, with the exception of Kenai Fjords National Park. Seward Dog Lodge (p. 77) will board your dog so you can enjoy a full-day adventure knowing that Fido is comfortable.
IS MARIJUANA LEGAL?
Yes, cannabis is legal in Alaska for recreational use if you’re over 21! Visit one of our local dispensaries, like The Tufted Puffin (p. 70), to partake (be ready to show your government-issued ID). Adults are allowed to have up to an ounce of marijuana in their possession at a time. Consumption is not allowed in public, in National Parks, or while driving.

HOUSES OF WORSHIP
Seward is home to several churches representing a variety of denominations which welcome visitors to attend services. Take a look at p. 77 for a full list of local spiritual organizations.

NEED TO DO LAUNDRY?
Check out the coin operated Suds N' Swirl Laundromat (p. 77), located midtown. They can also accommodate bulk loads.

Fishing in Alaska may seem daunting, but here are a few mustknows for those getting ready to cast a line!
DO I NEED A FISHING LICENSE TO FISH?
Any angler 16 years old or over will need an Alaska State sport fishing license, which can be purchased online at adfg.alaska.gov, or at several charter companies (p. 63) and retailers in town.
CAN I SHORE-FISH IN SEWARD?
Yes! Fishing from shore is a local’s favorite activity in Seward. During the silver salmon run in August, you can cast off from the beach. Just remember to follow all local rules and that shore fishing is only allowed in salt water.
WHERE CAN I FISH FRESH WATER?
Seward is renowned for our saltwater fishing opportunities, but with just a quick hike to Meridian or Grayling Lake, you can fish for ADF&G stocked trout or grayling. To river fish for trophy salmon or trout we recommend heading to our neighbors in Cooper Landing for a world-class drift-boat or fly-fishing adventure on the Kenai and Russian Rivers.
DO I NEED TO BRING MY OWN GEAR?
Most charters and guide services will supply the rod, reel, line, and tackle for your fishing adventure. For a solo excursion, poles, tackle and other essential gear, like rubber boots and waders, are available to purchase or rent at our local outfitters (p. 70)
A few must-haves on your sportfishing charter

The land around Seward is vast and unique, full of beautiful panoramas where mountains, forests, ice, and ocean meet. With an abundance of recreational opportunities right at our doorstep, we’re happy these public lands are in our backyard.
Spend a day hiking, biking, or running along any of our beautiful trails. For those looking to get off-grid and into the wilderness with a multiday trip, take advantage of our region’s public-use cabins or pitch your own tent. Due to the remote and wild nature of our public lands, camping is best suited for experienced backcountry travelers or with a professional guide. Whatever your experience level there is adventure out there for everyone!

The Kenai Fjords were formed by glaciers flowing from the vast Harding Icefield, nearly 700 square miles of majestic ice that forms the centerpiece of the national park. While much of the park is only accessible via air or boat, the Exit Glacier Nature Center is just a short 12mile drive from Seward and provides trail access to Exit Glacier and the Harding Icefield.
Chugach National Forest is home to glaciers, salmon and trout streams, cozy public-use cabins, cold-water oceans, and snowy peaks. Opportunities for recreation include the southern portion of the Iditarod National Historic Trail, a network of trails perfect for hiking, mountain biking, running, and more.
Take the family for a beach walk at Lowell Point State Recreation Site for a moderate hike or paddle to Tonsina Point. Cruise by water taxi to Caines Head State Recreation Area to explore historic WWII Fort McGilvray and hike rugged trails.
Alaska is home to various big animals like bears and moose. It’s important to remember that when hiking, you’re in their home. While bear attacks are rare, it’s a good idea to carry bear spray and a bear horn in an easily accessible spot, and to know how to use it.
Leave areas as you found them. Do not dig, construct, stack or rearrange. If you clear an area, replace the items before leaving. Don’t damage or alter live trees and plants.
Pack out what you pack in. Don’t leave any bit of waste, garbage or otherwise, on the trail for others to find.
When building fires, cooking dinner, or just enjoying the trail remember your best friend may not be everyone else’s. Dogs should be leashed when hiking unfamiliar trails, for their safety and the safety of others. Be sure your dog is fit enough for the planned route and just as prepared as you are!

JANESSA ANDERSON

It’s important to observe ‘trail etiquette’ when enjoying the land in and around Seward. To guarantee the best experience and to ensure that the trails we love are available to all for years to come we ask that trail users respect the environment, the wildlife, and fellow trail goers by remembering to leave no trace and practice these ‘rules’ of the trails.
MT. MARATHON BOWL

Research and get ready for your trip, no matter how short! Preparation allows backcountry travelers to have a great time while minimizing their damage to the land around them.
Trail use is recommended whenever possible to avoid further impact on the land. Don’t cut switchbacks or blaze your own path, that’s what the trail is for!
We want everyone to enjoy their outdoor experience, so show respect to those around you!
Trails can get narrow and winding, so it’s important that those who are traveling downhill yield to uphill traffic.
When passing, follow the rules of the road and pass on the left. If you’re traveling at a faster speed, make sure those ahead of you know you’re coming by giving them a friendly “on your left!”
As for hierarchy on the trails, horses and pack animals have the right of way over hikers, who have the right of way over cyclists.
Help us keep Alaska wild and beautiful for generations to come. Everything in Seward is connected - from mountain trails to salmon streams to Resurrection Bay. What we leave behind doesn’t just disappear; it can make its way into our watershed and ocean, impacting wildlife and the ecosystems that make this place so special. Here are a few simple ways you can reduce your environmental impact while traveling:
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. Ever notice how recycling comes last? That’s because it isn’t always the most effective solution, especially in remote communities like ours, where transporting materials in and out can be costly and complex. While local groups like Sustainable Seward work hard to make recycling more accessible, the biggest impact starts with reducing plastic waste in the first place. Skip the 24-pack of plastic water bottles and choose a reusable bottle insteadsmall choices make a big difference.
Pack it out. If you find trash on the beach or trail, we’d love your help packing it out - that’s what most locals do!
Visit sustainableseward.org to learn more about waste reduction efforts in Seward.
The waters surrounding Kenai Fjords are home to many awe-inspiring species, including sea otter, Dall’s porpoise, harbor porpoise, Steller sea lion, harbor seal, orca (killer whale), fin whale, gray whale, humpback whale, minke whale, and sei whale. Wildlife cruises (p. 67) are your best bet for spotting these animals in the wild.
A guaranteed way to experience our region’s marine wildlife is at the Alaska SeaLife Center (p. 62) In addition to being Seward’s most popular year-round attraction, the ASLC is Alaska’s leading public aquarium and only marine animal rehabilitation facility. Your admission supports animal care and feeding, wildlife response, and groundbreaking research. Learn more at alaskasealife.org

Seward is a birder’s paradise with more than 190 species documented in and around Kenai Fjords. Common birds include horned and tufted puffins, kittiwakes, murres, bald eagle, and Steller’s jay. Wildlife cruises are the best way to access renowned birding hotspots like the Chiswell Islands. Some operators even offer special tours for bird enthusiasts.
Join us in early June for the annual Seabird Festival! Celebrate the return of 30+ species to their summer breeding grounds in Kenai Fjords.
Seward enjoys boat access to three Alaska State Marine Parks in Resurrection Bay. Popular with anglers, boaters, and paddlers, the DNR-managed parks encompass thousands of acres of sand and cobble beaches, spruce and hemlock forests, rocky cliffsides, and sheltered waters. Thumb Cove SMP offers two public-use cabins. On Fox Island, bucolic Sunny Cove and Sandspit Point offer breathtaking views of Eldorado Narrows, Callisto Head, Bear Glacier, and Aialik Cape.

The Kenai Peninsula is home some 29 species of land mammals. Iconic species such as moose, black bear, brown bear, and mountain goat are joined by beaver, porcupine, snowshoe hare, coyote, lynx, and more. Flightseeing (pp. 6364) offers opportunities to spot black bears on beaches and mountain goats on steep alpine walls.
The safest way to see these amazing animals up close is at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (p. 67), a 200-acre non-profit wildlife sanctuary located in Portage Valley, at Mile 79 of the Seward Highway. Surrounded by the breathtaking Chugach Mountains and Turnagain Arm, AWCC offers a peaceful and scenic setting for learning about resident wildlife. Enjoy a scenic 1.5-mile shared pedestrian and vehicle loop, accessible year round..
We have both black and brown bears on the Kenai Peninsula, and sometimes it can be difficult to tell them apart. A good rule of thumb is to remember that brown bears have a "hump" on their shoulder, longer claws, and short fuzzy ears. Black bears, on the other hand, have shorter claws, long or upright ears, and no shoulder "hump". Size and color are not good indicators of bear type, because many black bears are actually brown, and some brown bears may be on the smaller side.
Seward and the surrounding areas are home to dozens of black and brown bears. You'll often find them grazing on berries in the alpine or even meandering around town searching for a quick bite. During your stay, stay safe by making lots of noise on hikes, properly disposing of all food and waste, and carrying bear spray when in the outdoors. You can rent a can of spray at The Seward Outdoor Store or Adventure 60 North. If you encounter a bear, do not run! Stand your ground and remain calm. Learn more about what to do during a bear encounter at NPS.gov

In 2017, Outside Magazine declared, “Mount Marathon is the Toughest 5K on the Planet."

MT. MARATHON RACE TRAIL | MICK DEES
Each year on July 4, Seward hosts the historic Mount Marathon Race, which has been called “the toughest 5K on the planet.” Established in 1915, the 3.1-mile race begins and ends in downtown Seward, sending competitors straight up Mount Marathon and climbing roughly 3,022 feet in less than two miles. Runners then descend the same rugged terrain - navigating loose shale, mud, and lingering snow - before returning to 4th Avenue, where cheering crowds line the course. For many Seward residents, running Mount Marathon is a longstanding Fourth of July tradition, while competitors from across Alaska, the Lower 48, and overseas travel here each year to take on the challenge.

The race serves as the centerpiece of Seward’s multi-day Fourth of July Festival, a longstanding community celebration that fills downtown with activity and draws residents and visitors alike. More than 50 Alaska food and craft vendors line the streets, alongside lively traditions such as the fish toss and greased pole competition, a festive street parade, a boat parade in Resurrection Bay, and midnight fireworks over the water. Together, these events create a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere that extends well beyond race day and reflect Seward’s strong sense of history, community, and Independence Day pride. For more details go to mountmarathon.com

Waterfront spectators enjoy the boat parade.

Held annually during the second week of August, the Seward Silver Salmon Derby welcomes anglers of all skill levels to chase silvers in Resurrection Bay for daily prizes and a $10,000 grand prize. With multiple divisions and ways to win, and special mystery-tagged fish that can unlock even bigger payouts, there are plenty of chances to land something memorable. Participants can register for the full Derby or sign up for a single day - even the morning ofmaking it easy for visitors to join the action. And to top it off, proceeds from Derby-caught fish support local salmon habitat restoration efforts, helping sustain Alaska’s salmon runs for generations to come.

Not fishing? Head to the Seward Boat Harbor and jump into the energy of the daily weigh-ins. Check out the impressive silver salmon on display as boats return, check the leaderboard to see who’s in the lead, and soak up the dockside atmosphere. Daily BBQs hosted by local nonprofit organizations make it easy to grab food while directly supporting the community, turning each weigh-in into a lively, family-friendly summer gathering. Check out seward.com/ salmon-derby/ for more details!

Seward and the surrounding Kenai Peninsula offer an abundance of wild foods throughout the year. From mushrooms and berries to fiddlehead ferns and nettles, foraging can be a rewarding way to connect with the landscape and bring seasonal flavors into your kitchen. Greens emerge in early spring, while berries and edible fungi can be found into the fall, and medicinal mushrooms like chaga can be harvested in the dead of winter.
FORAGING SAFETY REMINDER: Always positively identify any plant or mushroom before consuming it. Many edible species have toxic lookalikes. When in doubt, do not harvest. Use a reliable field guide or consult knowledgeable local resources, and take only what you need.

Fall foliage provides a beautiful backdrop, making it the perfect time to mountain bike, hike, or trail run. Early autumn provides a last chance to reel in fish and a time to wave goodbye to the humpbacks as they make their way to Hawaii.

As temperatures begin to rise and snow thaws, revealing the lush landscapes, wildlife including whales and birds begin to migrate back to Seward. Birdwatchers in the area may observe the arrival of species like puffins, Arctic terns, hummingbirds and other migratory birds.

MILE ZERO
We all take different roads to get here. From every direction, we travel - one way or another - until we merge with the only road that ends in a little town called Seward.
The whales call Seward home for the summer, as does the sun, only for cold and darkness to take their place. The salmon return after years away to meet their end and give way to rebirth. And for us locals, we know that even our time here is borrowedand that it is a gift.
Whether we are here to live, work, or play, we all share a responsibility to protect its integrity and longevity.
Stewardship is often spoken of as low impact - a leave-no-trace sort of concept. We believe in high impact: that no one should leave unchanged. For those visiting, we hope you leave caring more deeply for this place and the wild that shapes it. For those who live here, we hope your love for this town is infectious. And for those who come to work, we hope you leave with roots, not just memories.
Seward is not a destination town. It is the birth of an opportunity - to imagine, to share, and to exist. It is no surprise, then, that at the end of the road, our story begins.
Welcome to Seward - for whatever brings you here, for as long as you are here.
