Headmaster Doug Lagarde’s Commencement Message to the Class of 2012 Your diploma comes as a result of years of your hard work, of your planning, and also as a result of your teacher’s patience and their hard work, and of your family’s loving support. Much of your individual journeys, however, will be out of your control and beyond your hard work and planning. What is in front of you is unknown, and things will happen that are unexpected. How you respond to and what you do with the unexpected in your life will be just as important, if not more important, than the hard work and planning that has gotten you to this important day.

I hear too often that learning for learning sake is a luxury. It isn’t practical. You need to figure out exactly what it is you want to do now at age 16, 17, or 18 and then pursue it blindly to some vocational end. I worry that this will lead to unfulfilling careers and disappointing lives. Can you know exactly what it is you want to do at a young age and then choreograph the steps to make it happen? Absolutely. But this is atypical. Without a show of hands, I’d be curious to poll the adults here this morning to find out how many of them at their high school graduation had a plan and then executed it such that they ended up where they are today. None of us can under-

stand today our future circumstances. How our life will be lived, particularly if you are at the stage of life that our graduates are. The world is too unpredictable, too dynamic, too unknowable. A career you may have 20 years from now may not exist today and the skills needed to succeed in a certain field today may be obsolete within the next decade.

Last May during the graduation season New York Times columnist David Brooks wrote an insightful column questioning the advice offered to graduates today: that advice, was to first find your passion and then pursue your dreams. The implication is that they should find themselves first and then go off and live their quest. But of course very few people can take an inward journey and come out having discovered a developed self.

As Brooks points out, most successful people don’t look inside and then plan a life.

They look outside and find a problem, a cause, a challenge, that summons their life. In other words they don’t form a self and then lead a life. They are called and respond openly to the unexpected, and the self is constructed gradually by that calling. They see life not as a project to be completed but as an unknowable landscape to be explored. A life in which you do not ask, what does life have to offer me, but instead, ask, what is it I can offer life’s moments? What are these current circumstances summoning me to do? What is needed in this place?

Too often today the world of education focuses solely on what can be measured, and this class certainly measures up, be it National Merit Scholars, critically acclaimed theatrical productions, Mock Trial, Model UN and Economics team’s success, incredible musical talent and grace, award winning artists, acclaimed athletes, outstanding college acceptances, and of course beating St. Marys in lacrosse. We can all be justifiably proud of these accomplishments, and the many more that I do not have time to mention this morning. But I contend that what really matters is not measurable – compassion, the enjoyment in others success, working at something hard for the intrinsic value, authenticity, perseverance, application, industry, desire. The class of 2012 was able to focus on all that is currently measured in educational circles without losing the focus on what really matters by making sure that it was not just about them. It was always about adding value to every situation. It was about identifying what was needed in this place and offering their talents and energy.

What is it I can offer life’s moments? What are these current circumstances summoning me to do? What is needed in this place? These questions, whether they were cognizant of them or not have guided the actions and therefore the legacy of the Class of 2012. Their willingness to engage and add value to any situation has defined their years at Severn. Simply put, Severn is a better school, a better community, because this group of young people spent time here. For seven years they have been unabashed participants in the life of the school with an eye toward making things better. They’ve been a galvanizing force breaking down the hierarchical boundaries between grades allowing the school as a whole to flourish. They represented themselves as distinct individuals and accepted, included, even embraced, each other engendering a genuine appreciation for and enjoyment in each other’s successes.

Class of 2012, I predict you will not be spectators to life.

You will be open to and embrace the unexpected; you will be authentic and continue to invest positively in the communities that of which you become part. Whatever you are summoned to do, however large or small the canvas upon which you ultimately paint, always keep a healthy balance between your measured success with that of success that really matters. For we do not educate to maintain the world as it is, but to expand the beauty in it. Class of 2012, continue to add value and life will summon you to greatness – good luck and congratulations.

Leading the Life of the Mind...

Severn Fellows 2012

I

nitiated for the 2008-2009 school year by Headmaster Doug Lagarde, the Severn Fellows program invites a select group of Severn School seniors to transcend the academic program and develop a year-long intellectual pursuit that reflects their growing passions. Students are encouraged to demonstrate their abilities to synthesize ideas and to create new fields of inquiry in the application of several skills and knowledge bases that they have developed in their time at Severn. John Turner served as the first moderator of the Severn Fellows until Joel Madden took over in 2010.

The Fellows are selected through an application process in the spring of their junior year and work on their projects throughout their senior year. They work with a mentor, often from outside Severn School, who is familiar with their field of inquiry. At the end of the year, they present their work to the Severn community. Severn Fellows enter into this experience with the understanding that their project will receive neither a grade nor academic credit; they explore their passions in the purest of regards and know that the most satisfying reward comes

in meeting goals and in knowing that they have done something well. The types of projects that Fellows have undertaken since the inception of our program are as varied as the students themselves. A sample of this year’s projects shows this variety: writing a novella, a children’s book, a song or a play, researching new ways of treating hypertension, learning how teenagers lived in concentration camps during the Holocaust.

In the first year of the program nine students engaged in this intellectual endeavor and over the four years of the program the number has steadily increased with 15 participating this past year.

Advisor Joel Madden said, “The Fellows program is a hybrid learning experience; it has many features of a regular academic activity in that the projects demand serious effort on the part of the Fellows, but it is non-graded and students are self-motivated. In the three years that I served as advisor to the Fellows I have seen some magnificent projects.”

In the belief that knowledge and experience once gained, should be celebrated and shared. The 15 Severn Fellows in the Class of 2012 presented their projects in front of an appreciative audience in May.

middle school perspective The Art of Diffused Leadership Dr. Gray Smith | Middle School Head

I

became a Middle School head after working for more than a decade in upper schools. My initial exposure to lower and middle schoolers was as an administrator at a summer program for gifted and talented students. In that role, I discovered that I liked working with this population of students as much as I liked working with upper schoolers. But since making the switch, I’ve also come to see the value of the switch itself. Shifting from an upper school division to a middle school division has not only given me an opportunity to fully examine teaching and learning through a different lens, it has also

revealed to me some unintentional divides that exist in many school cultures - especially the lack of interaction among divisions - that limits the exchange of practitioner knowledge between teachers at different levels.

In short, I’ve come to appreciate the value of a full-spectrum view. I’ve also come to see how important it is to strengthen the middle school perspective through greater collaboration and shared leadership. The value, of course, is directly felt in a middle school, but sharing professional experience across divisions is effective for establishing a cohesive and synergistic academic environment.

Bolstering the Middle School Perspective I have heard it said that, “Upper School teachers love their subjects ... middle school and lower school teachers love their students.” While this is a generalization, in my experience, there is some truth to it. I have deeply enjoyed the opportunity to immerse myself in a middle school where, I have found, the allimportant link between joy and learning is strong. In many upper schools, by contrast, I’ve seen how this link can become rusted over during what is too often described as “the grind” toward college admissions. Leading a middle school has given me pause to remember what the best teaching looks like: creative and student-centered. Good middle schools, before all else, instill in students that all-important sense that their teachers care about them and want them to succeed. What too many middle schools don’t do, however, is feel confident that they have something to contribute to the entire school.

Based on this finding, I decided to replace our typical division meeting time, which consisted of “housekeeping” chores and administrative checkups, with intra-divisional workshops for teacher learning. Besides, I reasoned, the middle school faculty meets three times a week or more in “chambers” and also in grade-level meetings, which provide ample time for housekeeping. We could spend our division time more wisely and purposefully. By partnering with the school learning specialist and the academic dean, we were able to draw up five workshops that included discussion on topics like formative assessment, differentiation, and inquiry-based instruction. Because the teachers seemed to glean insight and depth of understanding from lesson study, it played a central role as well. The external goals of the workshops were to explore some of the progressive and creative lessons found in the teachers’ repertoires in order to get the teachers talking to each other about how they meet the needs of their students, and especially to cultivate the teaching practices of our new teachers. We were already in the process of revising the school curriculum, and my hope was that the workshops would illuminate the fine work done in the middle school and build a collective confidence in sharing what we do with the school at large.

Here at Severn School, we hold a monthly full-faculty meeting, including teachers from both the middle and upper schools. One of the main attractions at these forums is when a teacher or a team of teachers presents an effective lesson, strategy, or assessment. When I began my post, upper school teachers had nearly always made such presentations.

Middle school teachers expressed a sense of nervousness about presenting, even when they had terrific material. The sentiment seemed to be that the upper school should lead and the middle school should follow, even when the middle division had new and innovative ideas and tactics.

In my work observing classes, I witnessed impressive daily feats of teaching from the Middle School teachers and I found myself strongly encouraging them to lead a presentation, but at first only one teacher volunteered. This teacher did a great job, but I believed we needed more to step forward - and I realized it was going to take more than my personal efforts at persuasion. This was a matter of confidence, trust, and school history. I knew the Middle School had a rich culture of teaching and, through some lesson-study workshops, we uncovered a wealth of in-house ex-

What were the results? Strategies and expertise that may have only been used or known by one or two teachers were shared with the larger group and, once shared, used in partnership to craft new lessons stronger than the sum of their parts.

For example, a science teacher, an English teacher, and a librarian teamed up to teach eighth-grade science students about waves. The students were allowed to choose and investigate the aspects of waves that they wished as long as they adhered to some very definite guidelines for their research. The resulting projects were displayed in the school library; students who created the projects stood by their work and presented their findings in shifts to other students and teachers. The way these projects were displayed in the library made them very public. Upper school teachers and students using the library could not help but see what the middle schoolers had done, and many stopped to listen to the presentations.

Leveraging the Strengths and Wisdom of Teachers

Highlighting Student Leadership

The sense that the middle school was on to something and that we had a significant contribution to make to the teaching and learning that happens in the school at large was palpable. Yes, the teachers did present at a full faculty meeting and it was a hit. From a leadership perspective, this experience was a case study demonstrating that the more a leader recognizes the teachers who share his or her division as intellectuals, treats them as such, and offers them chances to share in the division’s educational leadership, the more those teachers will be likely to think about, partner, and innovate to design meaningful learning experiences.

Because middle school, in my view, is a conspicuously student-centered place, I would be remiss if I did not reflect on leadership activities centered on our students. Differentiated from upper school, middle school is more focused on building skills - academic, social, and emotional - than it is on learning and retaining content. Skill building is certainly present and further strengthened in an upper school; but in my experience, the demands on an upper school to deliver content are more intense, as students are expected to learn increasingly complex material and prep for lengthier and more significant exams in an effort to prime themselves for the challenges of college. Over the last few years, we have taken a school-wide look at leadership, how we teach it, and how we give students opportunities to take part.

Both the middle and upper schools have a broad assortment of leadership roles for students ranging from student council to team captainship to presiding over a club. What these opportunities have in common is that there is a selection process to take part in leadership, be it student elections or a recommendation process.

In later weeks, I would hear that teachers emulated the design of the workshops with their students, seeking their expertise and prior knowledge about topics from Shakespeare to geology- a trickle-down effect exemplifying how, when. The division’s leader partners with teachers, the teachers are likely to do the same with their students. Additionally, the workshops showed the larger school community the practice of purposefully setting aside time to explore the intellectual side of teaching, its “art” and “craft” of practice that happens every day in a private school. For me, this process is far superior to those professional development settings in which teaching is discussed as a systematic process and facilitated by speakers who are experts in university-based teaching theory, but who often do not have a wealth of classroom experience.

The next iteration of faculty workshops will ’be done in the form of “practitioner” research, or a teacher’s inquiry into his or her own practice. I plan to relinquish more administrative control over how teachers learn to be better at what they do and I will instead attempt to plaster the art of facilitating teacher-centered, inquiry-based learning. I anticipate that we will build on our previous accomplishments and continue to engage in collegial partnering in an effort to create the best lessons for our students. Perhaps more important, based on the trickle down effect from the first workshops, I predict that the middle school teachers will explore similar learning strategies with their students.

Two years ago, in the middle school, we started some conversations about what leadership means to middle schoolers and how to equitably create opportunities for students who want to try their hand at it. This discussion was borne out of the belief that middle school is a great platform for experimentation and discovery. Indeed, we have a complete curriculum of elective and enrichment courses for students in addition to the formal curriculum. Students can spend 40 minutes a day learning chess, shooting a bow and arrow, building a robot, speaking Chinese, or taking part in a myriad of other educational activities.

These types of classes build skills and confidence that are transferable to the classroom, yet students do not receive grades for them; they are expected to, very simply, give them a try. Looking at these electives, we thought, “Why not give all of our students a place where they could try leadership?”

Middle School Perspective

We called it Community Life and envisioned it as a place where students could come together with a mission to improve the school community. All middle school students are eligible to be members; sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students meet and talk together about topics that range from diversity in our community to improving the food options in the dining hall.

Community Life was popular from the beginning but has grown to around 20 members over the last three years. Under the guidance of one of our English teachers, who has extensive experience as a camp counselor, Community Life has taken over two major studentcentered middle school events: (1) Get Acquainted Day, where we welcome all of our new students to school, and (2) Eighth Grade vs. the Faculty Day, where the eighth graders take on the faculty in some friendly competition. Community Life has its own day, too, where we take time to examine a facet of school life that the students, through their Community Life representatives, express an interest in exploring. For example, two years ago we ordered a banner with the words “A community that...” written on it and gave the kids time, through advisory, to fill in what they thought should come next. Some teachers were afraid that the students, when given the opportunity to write about their school anonymously on a publicly displayed banner, would take it as a chance to complain, not take it seriously, or worse, write something inappropriate on it. None of those things happened. What we learned about how the students perceived their community was invaluable and sparked conversations from the importance of recess to the value placed on personal honor and accountability. Part of our school mission statement is dedicated to leadership and describes one of the ways we challenge our students. It reads, “ ... to marshal the courage to lead, and to develop the lasting desire to serve .... “ To that end, a task force comprising upper and middle school teachers and administrators formed to take a look at how exactly we do this - how we teach leadership and how we instill good leadership skills in our students.

When the teachers met to decide how to engage the students in a discussion about leadership, the success of the Community Life banner was central to the conversation. Ultimately, the task force decided to use open, public banners as a way to get a sense for how our students think about leadership at school.

The responses were astounding and have since ’provided a framework for building a program for student leadership training in grades six through twelve that we are working to fully integrate over the next few years.

In my opinion, teaching middle schoolers how to lead themselves is the most realistic expectation of a middle school leadership program and carries the most value, as strong self leadership will only serve to effectively guide them as they become older students who have more opportunities to lead their peers. In the middle school, we have tackled this challenge by establishing divisional themes around the term civility - more specifically, how good leadership begins with good citizenship. With the help of our dean of students and advisory coordinator, we have delivered this message through assemblies and our advisory program. Last year at assembly, each advisory group took a chapter from P. M. Forni’s book Choosing Civility and portrayed it as a way students could act upon Forni’s message. For example, one advisory exemplified the importance of returning a “hello” or a “good morning,” another advisory demonstrated the value of sincerely apologizing when you have hurt another’s feelings; both focused on how good self leadership can affect the tenor of the larger school community.

School-Wide Leadership from the “Middle” I have shared just a few examples of how to “lead from the middle” - in this case, literally from the “middle” school. While upper schools may always be the “flagships,” when middle school heads and other school leaders play to the strengths of their respective divisions, recognizing and exposing the good work done in them, the definition of school leadership is broadened and redefined in ways that celebrate the strengths of all of its constituents and inspire the full school community.

“While this class is a study in contrasts, each and every student has made a contribution to life in the Middle School. I am confident that they will all make a smooth transition to the Upper School,” reflected Middle School Head Dr. Gray Smith.

Academic and recognition awards were presented prior to each student receiving his/her promotion certificate during the special final assembly. Students and their families and guests then enjoyed a punch and cookie reception on the lawn outside McCleary Student Center.

Severn School Receives $2 Million Endowment Grant From The Malone Family Foundation

evern School is pleased to announce that it has been selected as a recipient of a $2 million endowment grant from the Malone Family Foundation to provide scholarships for gifted students with financial need. The prestigious Malone Family Foundation invites select schools to apply for this endowment. After an initial screening process, Severn was selected to enter the semifinalist stage of the grant-making process. A representative from the Malone Foundation visited Severn in April.

evern School is pleased to announce its 2012 Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees Henry “Chic” Ciccarone ’56, Anne Schorreck Wilkerson ’92, John G Neely Jr ’97 and Lindsey Biles Dumont `01. The alumni athletes were celebrated recently at an all-school assembly and introduced by family and former teammates. Severn’s Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is chaired by Stacey Hendricks Manis ’81 who was inducted into the group in 2002.

Henry “Chic” Ciccarone ’56

Chic Ciccarone received the honor posthumously. The award was accepted on his behalf by his son Steve Ciccarone. Also representing the family was his widow Sue Ciccarone and other son Brent.

Ciccarone graduated from Severn in 1956 during which time he was a standout football quarterback and an All State high school lacrosse player. He went on to play lacrosse and study at Johns Hopkins University. The US Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association named him to the All

America third team in 1960, the second team in 1961 and first team in 1962. As a senior he served as team captain and participated in the North/South Collegiate All-Star game.

After graduating from Hopkins, Ciccarone began coaching at Hopkins as an assistant lacrosse coach, assistant football coach and head basketball coach. In 1975 he became the head coach of the Hopkins men’s lacrosse program, a post he held until 1983. During his tenure he amassed a 105–16 record. Ciccarone guided the Blue Jays to three consecutive national championships 1978 to 1980. He was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1987. He died of a heart attack at the age of 50 in 1988.

Anne Schorreck Wilkerson ’92

Wilkerson was born in Annapolis and grew up in Crofton, Maryland. She was introduced by former teammate and close friend Sarah Franey ’92. During her years as an Admiral, she was a three-year starter for the field hockey, basketball and lacrosse teams and recipient of the C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Athletic Service award.

While playing field hockey at Severn, she was an A.I.S. all star, an all county player, a Maryland state all star and one of the top 5 scorers in the state. She was also tricaptain and MVP her senior year. Wilkerson’s varsity basketball career spanned four years and during her senior year she was a co-captain, MVP and received an all county honorable mention. Among her lacrosse highlights at Severn, she was selected for the A.I.S. all star team, all county team, all American honorable mention and had the privilege of playing in the USWLA National Tournament, the New England Lacrosse Classic and the Bilderback Tournament, of which she was named MVP. She was also tri-captain and MVP her senior year.

Upon graduating from Severn, Anne went on to play varsity lacrosse at Dartmouth College and received her BA in geography and environmental studies in 1996.

After college, she moved to Boston where she worked as a GIS mapping consultant and disaster recovery planner. In 2001, Anne entered graduate school at Harvard University, where she earned a masters degree in urban planning with distinction. Following graduate school, Anne proceeded to take her passion for urban planning into the public sector where she became a planner for the town of Brookline, MA. She and her husband Bret currently live with their two children, Wyatt and Alice, in Austin, Texas.

John G. Neely Jr ’97

Introduced by his friend and fellow Admiral Tim Staines ’97, Neely played varsity soccer 1994 to 1996 and was named captain and MVP his senior years. In addition to leading all county high schools in assists, Neely was among the top five scorers in the county in `95 and `96. He was a Capital-Gazette All County player in 1996.

John’s credentials in lacrosse were parallel. He served as captain in 1997 as well as being the leading scorer for the team. He received the Louck Award “as an unsung inspiration and positive influence in the school community” and was named to the All County Team by the Capital-Gazette newspaper. In 1997 John Neely was the only athlete in Anne Arundel County to be selected play in both North-South All Star games in soccer and lacrosse.

Upon graduation, Neely attended Hamden Sydney College where he was a four year lacrosse starter. He was named All Conference twice and made the All Virginia Team as selected by the VA Sports Information Directors (VSID.) He was an All American his senior year and competed in the College North-South All Star

Game. At the opening of the newly constructed Hamden Sydney stadium, Neely was asked to represent the student body and gave the dedication.

Neely was married June 16th in Annapolis to Laurie Leonard of Corinth, MS. He enjoys running, boating and fly fishing.

A lifetime Annapolis resident, Neely works for Paychex, Inc. in their employee benefits division.

Lindsey Biles Dumont ’01

Introduced by Admiral ladies lax coach Irene “Renie” Sotiropoulos, Dumont played both soccer and lacrosse at Severn.

She was a four year starter on the varsity soccer team earning player of the game honors four times during her career. She was named to the IAAM All Star team in 2000. She led Anne Arundel County in scoring and points with 19 goals and 13 assists.

During her lacrosse years, Dumont’s accomplishments are too numerous to list, hence we have omitted honorable mentions and second team honors she garnered throughout her Severn and Princeton years.

She started as a varsity midfielder all four years as an Admiral. During the years 1999, 2000 and 2001 she received recognitions as Severn’s Ted White MVP recipient and the Severn Mullinix Award for best attacker as well as named an IAMM A Division All Star. By the time she graduated in 2001 she had been named to the Baltimore Sun First County team twice, the Baltimore Sun 1st Team All Metro and the Washington Post First Team All Metro. As a Severn varsity player she scored 229 goals. She led Anne Arundel County in scoring with 74 goals for 94 points in 2000 and did the same in 2001 with 87 goals for a total of 116 points.

At Princeton, Dumont was a four-year starter on attack.

During her tenure at Princeton she helped secure two NCAA Division 1 championship victories. She was a first team all American for Division 1 in 2004, unanimous first team All Ivy League in 2004 and 2005 and Ivy League Player of the year in 2005. During her years playing at Princeton she scored 175 career goals for a total of 221 career points. (Second on the Princeton all time list.)

After college she was a member of the US Elite Team `06`07. Additionally she has served as a lacrosse commentator for ESPN and written columns for US Lacrosse magazine.

She currently resides in Washington, DC, with her husband Brad where she works for Discovery Channel Communications and in her spare time coaches a select 5-6 girls team.

Teamwork Key to the Best Season in Years Boy’s Lacrosse Season Wrap Up

T

he 2012 Severn boys lacrosse season was one of the best in recent memory. With a record of 15 – 7, the team finished the season ranked #1 in Anne Arundel County by the Capital Gazette and #6 in the Baltimore Metropolitan area by the Baltimore Sun. Six of the seven losses were at the hands of the five teams ranked above the Admirals (Calvert Hall, Loyola, Gilman x2, Boys’ Latin and McDonogh) and the other was to Bullis School the 2nd ranked team in the Washington Metropolitan area and of these losses 3 were by 1 goal and 2 of them were in OT. The team’s success was a testament to the word TEAM. The players employed stifling team defense holding their opponents to 5.8 goals per game and holding eventual MIAA Champions Calvert Hall to its lowest total of the year in a 5-4 overtime loss. The offensive numbers were equally as impressive scoring 218 goals on the season. But more importantly, the players shared the ball unselfishly and played passionately until the final whistle. No matter what the circumstance, they never gave up. This may be best exemplified by the win over Culver Academy where the Admirals clawed back from a 6 goal deficit in the 4th quarter to tie the score only to be scored upon by Culver with 8 seconds remaining.

Undeterred, the Admirals won the faceoff and after a quick feed scored with one second remaining and won the game in overtime.

I would like to personally thank each and every senior on this team.

Through their dedication, persistence and hard work, they helped restore the pride in Severn boys lacrosse. Congratulation to all the players, coaches and fans who contributed to this incredible season. I will truly treasure the memories.

Teel Model Unveiled!

W

hen Kent Holtgrewe ’73 was a student at Severn, his father Dr. Logan Holtgrewe, thought it would be interesting to create a scale model of the school’s central building, Teel Hall. Some alumni knew the building as “Old Main” during its first five decades. Others later called the imposing ivy and brick edifice “Teel Hall” or the “Ad Building.” One thing was certain, from its construction in 1919 to its demolition in 1985, Old Main was the iconic image of Severn School.

Kent recalls helping his dad take measurements of the building for the model. “We walked around all afternoon. He was fastidious in his measurements.” Dr. Holtgrewe began work on the model and then had to put it on the back burner for more than 30 years as life got in the way. In addition to his busy career as a surgeon at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Hospital, he made a commitment to the Museum of Flight to single handedly and meticulously handcraft more than 400 WWII model airplanes. Called the Holtgrewe WWII Collection, the project is the most complete collection of its kind and is now housed in the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington.

Last September, Kent called to say that his father still had the beginnings of his Teel Hall model and original drawings for the building. He asked, “Would you be interested in having him complete it?”

“This was exciting information,” said Headmaster Doug Lagarde. “Our alumni have a deep and abiding fondness for that building. They tell stories about their lives as students living in Old Main, climbing down the fire escapes and other memories. The timing couldn’t have been better as we prepare for our Centennial celebration.” He added, “Dr. Holtgrewe is a master modeler. To have him create a scale model of Teel Hall from the original plans was almost too good to be true. It truly was a remarkably generous and important gesture on his part.”

The model was unveiled during Alumni Weekend and the reaction was exuberant. “I swear when I look

through the window I think I see my father in there, “ said Robert Kesmodel ’62 son of former headmaster Paul Kesmodel. “It’s just so realistic down to every last detail,” said Severna Park historian Scott Jay ’62. “We are so lucky to have a true modeler recreate this very important piece of Severn’s history. He even put those fire escapes in.”

The model currently is located in the lobby in what is now known as the Teel Academic Center (the old Dorm) along with the original framed blueprints. The school hopes to make it the hallmark of a new archives room with funds raised from the Second Century campaign.

Lieutenant Keith Behr has been employed with the United States Secret Service Uniformed Division since 1989. He is currently assigned to the Office of the Chief, as the official-in-charge of the Time and Attendance Office. In this capacity he is responsible for overseeing the proper pay and benefits for more than 1,400 Uniformed Division employees. Previous assignments have included working at the White House and providing protection for President George H.W. Bush, President Clinton, President George W. Bush, and President Obama. He has also provided protection for numerous dignitaries, to include Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, and Queen Elizabeth II. During his tenure he has traveled extensively around the world, and has assisted with developing and overseeing security plans for numerous National Special Security Events.

Joe Burke ’94 is the owner of J. Burke Catering. As a small business owner, he wears all of the hats; everything from cooking, to deliveries to business development. He said, “While it presents its own challenges, it’s great to have the opportunity to be involved in every aspect of the business. We are working hard at trying to constantly grow the business and while sales drives that growth, building strong operations makes it possible.”

Mark Carroll ’83 is currently a field development manager with Boston Scientific Endoscopy. His responsibilities include medical device sales to gastroenterologists, education of medical staff and various administrative responsibilities. He has been working in sales since 1990. Prior companies include Dunbar Armored and E & J Gallo Winery. People interested in sales should possess a strong work ethic, solid verbal and written communication skills and the ability to be persistent.

Michael DeStefano ’84 is the president of Sturbridge Homes, a Maryland new home builder.

Sarah Jane Dunaway ’02 works as brand & marketing director for Syscom Services in Silver Spring-a technology company focused on web design and content management systems for associations, as well as fax processing and data storage for government and commercial markets. She oversees the marketing department and ensures consistency of brand messaging through efforts such as social media strategy and SEO, online and print advertising, sponsorships and events, and various graphic design and copywriting needs.

Last year she led the company through a corporate rebranding strategy which included a corporate identity redesign that recently placed Silver in the Neenah Paperwork Design Contest.

Tricia Edwards ’88 is the chief of education for the Smithsonian’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation at the National Museum of American History. She develops the conceptual framework for the Center’s educational programs and activities, related instructional materials, and evaluation instruments, with a primary focus on Spark!Lab, the Center’s hands-on invention activity center. Tricia is currently working to broaden Spark!Lab’s impact beyond the Smithsonian, working with museums across the country to integrate Spark!Lab activities and methodologies into their existing programs. Tricia also serves on several pan-institutional committees, including the Innovation at Smithsonian working group, the Smithsonian Council of Education Directors, and the Smithsonian Institution Learning Advocates Group.

Matt Evans ’87 is the owner of the Law Offices of Matthew S. Evans III. His firm specializes in real estate, construction and land use law.

Kim Selby Gauthier ’88 Is vice president of asset management for Thayer Lodging, where she is responsible for eight properties. She works with hotels to optimize profit, execute short term revenue management and sales strategies, and efficiently manage costs. Eric Hadhazy ’00 is involved with several studies at Johns Hopkins Hospital evaluating antimicrobial stewardship. Currently he is assessing the appropriateness of antibiotic therapy for patients suspected of having ventilatorassociated pneumonia (VAP) in the intensive care units and catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) in the medicine units. He manages a team of four employees to assist with data collection and preparation for meetings with the infection control team to discuss new grant proposals, current hospital practices, and ongoing research.

Dick Hires ’57 While serving as a professor at Stevenson Institute of Technology, Dr. Hires primary responsibility was to establish a research program which it provided support and research topics for his PhD students.

Steven Hyatt ’05 is involved with commercial sales/ leasing for Hyatt Commercial, a full-service brokerage firm offering investor services as well as quality property management. He represents landlords, tenants, and potential buyers and sellers of commercial property in and around Anne Arundel County. He also works with Annapolis Equity Group, a local private equity firm, acquiring new property and selling existing property currently in the portfolio.

Brian Ippolito has served as president and chief executive officer of Orbis since 2006. His mission is to apply intellectual capital to advance the aims of complex U.S. security and defense endeavors, and to add value to the investments of its commercial clients. He leads a team of eight directors and a workforce of approximately 60 employees with an objective of delivering semantic applications and cloud analytics to the Department of Defense and Fortune 500 companies.

Kirk Jay ’87 a senior vice president in investments with Wells Fargo Advisors. He manages investment portfolios for high net worth clients, endowments, trusts accounts and corporations. By identifying the needs of each of his clients, he is able to build a customized portfolio of stocks, bonds, mutual funds and alternative investments that help meet their individual goals and objectives.

Larry Kushner ’81 is Director of Advancement for the Anne Arundel Medical Center Foundation, where he handles day-to-day operations, has specific fundraising goals, supervisory responsibilities and interfaces regularly with clinical departments which are part of a large progressive health system. His position reports to the president of the AAMC Foundation.

Drew McCarl ’04 is technical recruiter for Millennial Media, where he works with the directors and managers

of the various IT departments to discuss their team needs and establish job openings. From there he searches for people with the right technical qualifications and backgrounds, interviews and prescreens them, sets up interviews with the team leads, and facilitates the offers for the new hires in IT. Jamie McNealey ’87 is CEO of the National College Lacrosse League(NCLL), where he is directly involved with admissions, membership, selection criteria, and all logistics related to this 125 men’s collegiate lacrosse organization. Under his leadership, the league has grown to include 10 conferences in 14 states and has grown 30 percent in five years. The NCLL holds Division I and II National Championships every May. Steve Muchow ’87 is a program manager with CAS Severn where he is involved with all phases of the software project life cycle from customer requirements to final customer acceptance. Duties include creation of Statement of Work, detailed project plan creation, estimate project duration, needed resources, and monetary costs. Execute the projects according to the plan as well as preparing status reports, invoices, and other project documents. Operate in a quality role by performing reviews of all project deliverables and performing earned value management tasks Mike Ritter is vice president of Long Fence Company, and oversees all aspects of the sales, installation and administration of the company.

Keith Singletary is the owner of a Chick-fil-A franchise. His role as a business owner is to ensure that he continues to create raving fans by delivering remarkable experiences by executing operational excellence, delivering 2nd mile service, and activating emotional connections.

Kate Skinker recruits and advises undergraduate students and potential graduate students at the University of Maryland who are interested in pursuing advanced degrees in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology at the University of Maryland. She advises, “regardless of your undergraduate degree, this may be the career for you.”

Ashley Templeton ’05 is an exhibit coordinator who actively acquires and manages the content from clients and consultants and processes it in order to aid the design and production of museum exhibitions.

Cardie Templeton ’88 runs her family business in Eastport renting offices and boat slips, including the Chart House restaurant. She’s responsible for taking care of the buildings and grounds as well as overseeing construction and renovation projects. Jerome McCabe passed away August 2010 at his home in California, MD. He was honored with a most interesting obituary.

Mr. McCabe, who was a lieutenant, said he was lucky; he was part of a group that called themselves the “Chosin Few.’’ He went on to a long career in the military, serving a second tour in Korea and one in Vietnam before retiring as a colonel in 1973.

But the Chinese launched an ambush on the evacuation, blowing up bridges crucial to the American escape. Waiting out the cold in their quilted uniforms and fur hats, the

He had chunks of shrapnel throughout his body, varying in size from a dime to a quarter, that were visible beneath his skin. Going through airport security, he would set off metal detectors. Albert “Buzz” Betzel passed away at his home in Little Torch Key, FL on May 19, 2011. He was born in Williamsport, PA in 1919 and graduated from the US Naval Academy in the Class of 1942, where he specialized in electrical engineering.

When war broke out in December 1941, his class was accelerated into service, and he fought as a submarine commander in the Pacific; he was awarded the Silver Star. Subsequent tours of duty included Hawaii, Groton CT, San Mateo CA, Key West FL, the Pentagon in VA, Long Beach CA; London, England; Alameda CA, Point Loma CA, and Valparaiso, Chile. After 30 years in the US Navy, he joined the National Science Foundation’s polar research department, and served as manager of Palmer Station in Antarctica during the 1980s.

His fellow Chosin soldiers - poorly trained, ill-equipped, and outnumbered 8 to 1 - were cut off from a larger Marine force on the west side of the reservoir near Hagaruri. “There were dead Chinese lying all around us, and they were frozen in place,’’ Mr. McCabe recalled 50 years later in an interview with The Washington Post. The Americans had resisted wave upon wave of communist troops attempting to break their perimeter. Finally, by that night, the unit began a large-scale evacuation along a snow and ice covered road to the Marines’ lines 5 miles away. After being struck by the mortar round earlier that day, Mr. McCabe lay unconscious in the cold for several hours until he was put in the back of a truck for the convoy headed west.

According to historian Roy E. Appleman, author of “East of Chosin: Entrapment and Breakout in Korea, 1950,’’ the battle’s “hallmarks were misery, soulcrushing cold, privation, exhaustion, heroism, sacrifice, leadership of high merit at times, but finally, unit and individual disaster.’’ Appleman continued, “It would be hard to find a more nearly hopeless or more tragic story in American military history.’’

“After four days and five nights of combat in temperatures that dipped to 35 degrees below zero, Jerome M. McCabe’s toes were numb and black from frostbite. His right arm and leg were bleeding from shrapnel wounds inflicted by a Chinese mortar round.

The 23-year-old Maryland native and selfdescribed “wet-nosed lieutenant’’ was the fire control officer for an Army artillery unit engaged in what historians considered some of the bloodiest fighting of the Korean War: the Col. Jerome M. McCabe `37 was Battle of Chosin Resa lieutinant when he served in the ervoir. By the night of Korean War and took part in the Battle of the Chosin Reserve Dec. 1, 1950, only 385 of the original 3,000 soldiers remained in the 31st Regimental Combat Team, known as Task Force Faith. About 1,000 had been killed, taken prisoner, or left to freeze to death. Another 1,500 were incapacitated or removed from the battlefield.

There, he met up with another group of soldiers and together they hiked the remaining distance to the Marines on foot - despite the lieutenant’s bleeding shrapnel wounds and severely frostbitten toes.

Edmund Lysle Potter, died November 29, 2011 in Greenville, South Carolina. He was a 1941 graduate of Greenville High School and Severn Preparatory School during which time he was an Eagle Scout. He later served as president of the Blue Ridge Council where he received the Silver Beaver Award. Ed attended Georgia Tech and was a graduate of the University of South Carolina where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha order.

A Veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre. At the time of his retirement, he was president and treasurer of Potter-Shackelford Construction Company. He was a past president of the Piedmont Contractors Association and had served on the board of the Carolina’s Branch Associated General Contractors and the South Carolina Board for Barrier Free Design.

A former director of American Federal Bank, he had served as vice president of the Chamber of Commerce and on the boards of the YMCA and the United Way and was a past chairman of the Greenville Hospital System Board of Trustees and past chairman of the Donaldson Commission. He was formerly a member of the City of Greenville’s Fireman’s Pension Fund, the City Zoning Board of Adjustment and had served on the board of directors of Kanuga Conference Center. He was a past president of the Greenville Kiwanis Club where he was a George F. Hixson Fellow, a past president of the Senior Golfers of South Carolina, a past president of the Cotillion Club and the Green Valley Country Club. He was an active member of Christ Church, where he had served as vestryman and senior warden and had been chairman of the Endowment Corporation. Surviving are his wife, Eugenia Jones Potter; a daughter, Alice Dillard Potter of Columbia; a son, Edmund Alexander Potter and wife, Geary of Greensboro, NC; and three grandchildren.

Dick Sheppe reports that he has three new great grandchildren. “They’re not ready for Severn yet but I will urge them when the time comes!” Valvin R. Sinclair, 82, of St. Louis passed away Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, in St. Louis. He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1952. He served in the U.S. Navy on an aircraft carrier and in the submarine service during the Korean War. He was a member of the Grand Lodge of the Masons No. 139, Acacia 602, in Columbia and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church. He lived in St. Louis for many years and did Veterans Affairs volunteer work at Jefferson Barracks Veterans Hospital. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family.

However he did write the following note to Reunion Chair Buzz Hall updating us on what’s been going on with him for the last six decades: “Just received of late the announcement our “ancient” class will be gathering there on the banks of the Severn trickle. Although the class picture is missing a few— John Smith and yours truly not present - guess the BW&A choo-choo from Annapolis that morning hadn’t arrived as yet — still the faces brought back some fond memories. It’s enough to make one wonder where they all are and who among us has “gone to his reward.” Spent 24 years in our Navy, half on sea duty (destroyers), and half on the beach, attached as one of two navy-type officers, to the DOD Manned Spaceflight Support Office (Project, Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Skylab), Patrick AFB. Those were fantastic years - was on duty in Mission Control Center, Houston, when Apollo 11 landed on the moon. Sadly must report this way too deaf old man will not be attending. I hope to get in a few trips. In fact, we already have been to Ocean City and to the Fisher family farm near Lewes, Delaware (in our family since 1685.).

Recently I received a nice note from Robert Waid who describes himself “as the skinny young kid from Chile that turned up just for my last year of high school at Severn-wanted to go to Annapolis, and did…” Bob left the Naval Academy for Rensselaer in Troy, NY. With the Korean “police action” he was drafted and ultimately managed to get into Army Flight School and graduated as Warrant Officer Helicopter pilot. He came off active duty in 1958 and was retired as W-4 when he hit 60. Along the way he spent time in Spain and the Canary Islands selling machinery and then running transportation companies for oil exploration activities in the Spanish Sahara. Later lived in Europe and most of the time was in the active reserves and flew during summer camps.

In 1970 he returned to the U.S. and ended up in New York National Guard. When he moved to California in 1980 he transferred to California Guard. In 1984 the Guard offered him a full time job flying C-7 Caribou. After his retirement Bob and his family spent time in a beach house in Mar de Cortez, Mexico until things got hectic and now lives in Fresno, CA. He has been married for 48 years, and has a son, two daughters and four grandchildren. Also, I just heard from Dick Scott (also a USNA roommate) who is doing well although having some problems with spinal stenosis. We just had our 64th reunion at Severn which I don’t think any of us attended but we need to start planning for next year’s 65th. Also, our USNA class had it’s 60th reunion. Dick and I could not attend but Boogie Strange and others did. In closing, Severn is encouraging each class to participate in class gifts. Severn has changed with the times but is still a top rated preparatory school. We should be very proud of what it stands for today. I look forward to hearing from one and all. Enjoy the summer. Take good care. Warmly, Skinhead (Bill)” Robert (Bob) Kauffman, 81, died peacefully November 7 at the Lutheran Home of Winston-Salem, NC. When he was a young child, Mr. Kauffman’s family moved to Severna Park, where he spent his childhood swimming in and sailing on the Severn River, ice skating on the frozen ponds, and creating mischief with his older twin brothers and many childhood friends. After graduation from Severn, Mr. Kauffman attended the University of Alabama, graduating in 1955 with a BS, followed by graduate classes in metallurgy, also at the University of Alabama. On August 29, 1953, he married Janet Holmes of Round Bay, and together they raised their three children. His work as a metallurgical engineer took his family from Lakeland,

(?) examples of why not to smoke. We both have COPD (sadly, hers much worse than mine necessitating her sucking oxygen 24/7). However, my AHS graduate girlfriend (’47) and I quietly celebrated our 59th anniversary in February and our wear-n-tear appearances confirm we look it!

I waited 6 years after Severn before deciding to make the sacrifice and save her from spinsterhood! All the best, ole friend of my youth, to you and to the class. P.S. In reflection, I made it through Severn’s academics by the skin of my teeth - more by grace than competence. Had I known then I’d earn a Ph.D. (Florida State University) and, at the professional closure of my years, be director of our local Easter Seals, I likely would have passed out in utter disbelief!!”

Paul Heineman was also unable to attend the 65th reunion but he checked in with us as well: “I’m an architect in Miami and I plan to retire after one more good-sized project is complete if it ever actually gets started in our chaotic Buzz Hall ’47 and daughter Alison local economy. I retired from tennis almost 10 years ago - I had run out of ready partners - still a dumb thing to let happen. In 1978 I closed my Baltimore practice and moved to South Florida to help build Miami Metrorail, later rebuild the airport, and still later schools for our big district (4th largest in US). In the years before and between these large efforts I consulted alone, which involved me in work from Newfoundland to Panama and from Honolulu to Kuwait. From 1977 on I was also teaching summer courses in the area of construction contracts, claims and specifications at University of Wisconsin - for 21 years there and then 4 more years in Kuwait. Good grounding at Severn made all these things possible. We have a little cottage with 400 orchids, a few fruit trees, and occasional grandchildren, three miles from the Everglades. Unless the doctors change our plans, I am going to have to miss this one, but will be there for the 70th.”

Bob Kauffman ’48 Weekends were often spent camping in the woods, climbing a mountain, sailing on a local lake or tubing down a river. Spending time with his family was what he loved best in life. He touched the lives of those around him with his trademark sense of humor and smile.

William Baynes MacLea, a retired industrial salesman whose career spanned three decades, died of heart failure 12/16/11 at his Towson home. He was 81. The son of a lumberyard owner and a homemaker, Mr. MacLea was born in Baltimore and raised in Roland Park. He attended the McDonogh School and graduated in 1949 from Severn School. In his youth, he worked for the family business, MacLea Lumber Co., in Baltimore.

After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. After leaving the service, he attended the University of Virginia, where he studied history and played lacrosse. In 1956, he joined the Maryland State Police and served as a trooper until leaving in 1960, when he enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park. Mr. MacLea went to work in indusBill MacLea ’50 trial sales in 1963, and during his career with Gates Energy and later Panasonic, his customers were primarily the federal government and the military. He retired from Panasonic in 1993. A resident of Lombardy Place in Towson for 50 years, in his retirement he coached lacrosse at Pikesville High School. He also enjoyed playing golf and tennis, and was a former member of the Baltimore Country Club. Mr. MacLea was an avid vegetable and flower gardener. He was a longtime member of Towson Presbyterian Church. Surviving is

his wife of 50 years, the former A. Priscilla Fringer, two daughters, two brothers, and two granddaughters.

Hi to Bill Leggett, Hank Caldwell, Ben Short and Nick G. Jim Dougall and Bill Leggett got together for lunch in Tucson recently. Jim and his wife, Dorothy, drove down from the Phoenix area. Bill and his wife, Peggy, came from about two blocks away in northwest Tucson. Naturally, the good ole days at Severn were very thoroughly thrashed over, along with how we met our wives (both delightful), and what has happened in those 60 years since graduation. Jack Andersen reports: “I have retired again though still have a summer chapel near my home on the St. Lawrence River.” Jack lives in Thousand Island Park, NY, a 19th century village largely unchanged for more than century.

Fritz Firing Sr. died at his home in Summerville, South Carolina, April 2, 2011. He was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1956. A proud member of the Marine Corps for 13 years, he served his country in Vietnam as an officer in the 3rd Marine Division. He retired after 30 years of civil service and went to work as a security guard for USA Associates at CSU and Charleston Public Waterworks, Charleston, S.C. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Helen of Summerville; a daughter, 2 sons, and 3 grandchildren. Fritz would like to be remembered by these two words: SEMPER FIDELIS. Commander James A. Evans, USN (Ret.), a resident of Easton, Maryland, since 2007 and formerly a Severna Park resident for 39 years, died March 7 at Memorial Hospital of Easton after suffering a cardiac arrest. He attended Severn School for a short time before entering the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating with the class of 1956. After flight training, he went on numerous tours of duty at sea as an all-weather fighter pilot, and was in the first Navy F4 Phantom Squadron. Along with numerous decorations during his career, Jim received the Navy Commendation Medal with a gold star, the Air medal with 3 stars, and the Vietnam Service Medal with a bronze star. Jim attended the Naval Postgraduate School and received his master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Princeton University in 1965. After retiring from the Navy in 1976, he worked as an engineering consultant through the year 1998.

Here is a story from Chuck Durling: “A long time ago, 1953 to be more exact; a student, Red Craig and I decided to experiment with a Silver Salute, what a powerful firecracker was called in those days. We thought that if we threw one down a toilet, it would blow all the water out and make a big bang. Mr. Zacharin was our French teacher and also the head honcho of one of the out buildings in those days that bordered the western side of the school property. He was a pretty good sport, so we decided to try the experiment in his building known as Zack’s Shack. Well, we should never have flushed the commode. When the Silver Salute went off it leveled it. No one knew who did it and the only evidence to my knowledge was a small drawing in the Navigator yearbook that Red (he was an excellent artist) somehow finagled into one of the opening pages.

Red never completed Severn, and the last I heard he had gone back to California. Great guy and a lot of fun while he was there.” [We searched the Navigators but could not find the drawing -ed.]

Robert G. Ballance Jr. passed away on December 18, 2011 in Las Vegas. Bob was born on March 13, 1933, in Keene, New Hampshire, to a Marine officer, Robert G. Ballance, and Emily Annis Crawford, both of Illinois. He graduated from San Diego State College with a B.S. in 1956, and then he entered the U.S. Navy. Bob, a heartfelt patriot, marched in the Eisenhower Inaugural Parade. He was very proud to serve his country and was in the Navy Active Reserves for over 40 years. He was a U.S. Navy Construction Battalion (CB’s) leader and built his unit up to 125 men, who they constructed school play grounds and parks for his Las Vegas community. Daniel C. Roper, III, a former executive with IBM and former Information Services Officer for Anne Arundel County, MD and Prince George’s County, MD, died August 23, 2011 at the Medical University of SC in Charleston. During his final illness he continued promoting environmental programs and supporting our troops overseas. An avid sailor, Mr. Roper raced to Bermuda and to Ensenada, Mexico, as well as cruising to Hawaii and all along the East Coast. Class Notes

Captain Robert L. Kiem, USN Retired, died November 29, 2011 in Orange Park, Florida following a brief illness. Following graduation from the University of Florida, he immediately entered the Navy flight program, was designated a Naval Aviator in August 1964, and reported to NAS Cecil Field for training in the A-4 Skyhawk. He joined VA-12 for his first sea duty and made deployments aboard USS Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Mediterranean and Viet Nam. In 1969, still flying the A-4, Captain Robert L. Kiem, USN he returned to sea Retired, ’58 and served as CAG 8 LSO in USS Shangrila (CVS-38) for another deployment to Viet Nam. After completing a wide range of tours, including CNO, VA-82, CLAW-1, VT-25, VA-72, VA-174, Command of USS Guam (LPH-9) and then USS Peleliu (LHA5), CINCPAC Cruise Missile Support Activity, and for his final assignment he served as Chief of Staff for Commander, Naval Air Training Command in Corpus Christi, TX where he had the opportunity to get back into the cockpit of the TA-4 and the Navy’s newest training jet, the T-45 Goshawk. After completing 4400 hours flying and 1044 carrier arrested landings, Captain Kiem retired from the Navy in May 1993.

Bob is survived by his wife, Annie, three children, and six grandchildren.

1959

Norman Hollis Baldwin died suddenly October 31 at his home in Eastport, Maryland. After graduating Severn in 1959, he attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. He served with the U.S. Coast Guard from 1964 to 1969 and received his 100-ton captain’s license. After retiring from a career in sales, he captained the Annapolis water taxi in the Annapolis Harbor and drove a D.C. Duck Tour in Washington, D.C. He sailed with the Indian Landing Boat Club early in life and was later active in both the Annapolis and Eastport Yacht Clubs. Mr. Baldwin was high point sailor on the Chesapeake Bay for many years in his Pearson 30, Severn Run. Known as “Stormin’ Norman” or as “Eyes on the Bay,” he was an avid fisherman on his boat, Meander. He raced with the AYC and volunteered for the AYC race committee for over 25 years. He also led the Light Parade out of

Eastport in Annapolis in December and was a member of the MSSA and the Saltwater Fishing Association.

Send notes to: Niel Perron 2155 82nd Ave. SW Vero Beach, FL 32968 Juan Miguel Cukier passed on March 13 this year in Casselbury, Florida. Born in Santa Ana, El Salvador, in 1942, he was the son of two Polish émigrés. His parents purchased two coffee farms near Santa Ana, which have been painstakingly managed by the family since the 1930s. His love for the land and people or climbing the hillsides where the coffee plants grew never left him, even when he attended Severn School, or when he earned his college degrees in Florida. From the University of Tampa, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. At the University of Florida, he earned another Bachelor’s in botany (specializing in tropical plants); and a Master’s of Science (in Post-Crop Horticulture) at New Mexico State University. For a number of years he was a Professor of Agriculture at the Escuela Nacional de Agricultura of El Salvador in the capital city, and chairman of the Horticulture Department. Miguel was very much the integrated person, deftly able to balance work and social life, mainly because he didn’t differentiate between them. He loved being with family, whether gathered around the dinner table or observing the Passover Seder. He loved teaching and research, and always kept an open mind. He had great kindness to help people, so he bought modern art from up-and-coming Latin American artists.

Class Notes

Bob Wilson died peacefully after a long illness, September 17, 2011, at his home in Afton, VA. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Chamblee McConnell; his two children, his two step-children, and six grandchildren. Bob, loved by many as Rebob, was a graduate of the University of Virginia and Severn School. He served in the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Air Force. After a dedicated career, he enthusiastically went into business for himself with his good friend and partner Steve Smith.

He dedicated his spare time to his passions for being outdoors and beautifying his peaceful country home. Rebob was known for the warmth and generous spirit he showed to close friends and acquaintances alike, and for the wonderful cheer and laughter that he brought to all occasions.

He is greatly missed by his loving family and devoted friends.

Ronald L. Johnson, passed away November 2, 2011, at his home in Boynton Beach, Fla. Following Severn, Ron attended Emory University in Atlanta, and graduated from the College of Business and Public Affairs at the University of Maryland with a major in journalism in 1968. Ron served in the Air Force National Guard. He worked in the food service industry for 40 years. In 1981, the family moved to Salisbury, where he was employed at Lankford Sysco Foodservices. He retired in 2006 as senior vice president, having helped build the company to national recognition in sales growth and market shares. Ron was a leader with vision, compassion and integrity. An avid decoy collector and duck and dove hunter, Ron was a charter member of the Ward Foundation and the Somers Cove Yacht Club in Crisfield. He was also a member of the Wicomico Yacht Club. He spent many years boating and fishing on the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. He was a loyal Terrapin Club member. He enjoyed cooking, gardening and traveling to the Caribbean.

Robert Smith happened to be browsing the Severn School website and found that he was listed as a ’lost alumnus’ for the Class of 1964. So he decided to let us know what transpired after his graduation from Severn. He writes, “I graduated with a BA from University of Virginia in 1969. After graduation, I was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserves and served at sea on active duty from 1969 thru 1972, with one shipboard deployment to Vietnam. Following that, I became a Special Agent with the U.S. Secret Service and had a variety of assignments in my 26 year career including the Washington, DC Field Office; US Secret Service Intelligence Division; Vice Presidential Protective Division (for GHW Bush as Vice President); Miami (FL) Field Office; Tyler (TX) Resident Office; Rome (Italy) Field Office; and the Austin Field Office.

I retired from federal service on December 30, 2000 as the Agent-in Charge, U.S. Secret Service - Austin (TX) Office, the year that then Texas Governor George W. Bush became President-elect Bush. In 2001 I went to work for the Texas Attorney General’s Office in Austin as Chief Investigator for their newly developed Internet Crimes Bureau, serving there for three years. In 2004, I chose to transfer back to Tyler as Managing Investigator for the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit Field Office. I retired on December 31, 2011 after approximately 10 ½ years of service with the State of Texas. My wife, Deborah, and I have been married for over 30 years and have two grown sons.

William Porter, of Fairfax, VA, passed away on November 22, 2011. Beloved husband of 43 years to Mary E. “Beth” Porter; loving father of William J. Porter, III, Mary E. Powell and husband, Jason and Robert C. Porter; cherished grandfather of Henry Powell and Fern Powell; twin brother of Eleanor A. Clark and husband, Gentry. I can say with absolute certainty that Mr. Duckworth and Mr. Chappell would be both mildly astonished and profoundly disappointed at our laconic communications of late. Please consider bringing us up to speed with the latest events in your world, personal or professional events that you’d like to share with people you’ve not seen in years or those of whom your only recollection is frozen in time from 1965. Here’s a thought: it is hard to imagine, but the Class of 65 turns 65 this year (most of us). Some of us have either made the move or are in the process of transitioning from working full time to part time or not at all. When the company was founded in 1972, Craig was hand-winding coils for crossovers in his bedroom at Le Chateau, an old mansion in Baltimore where he and the company’s co-founders lived and worked. Craig moved on to managing production and manufacturing at the company’s Craig Georgi ’66 Baltimore headquarters and in its manufacturing facility in Tijuana, Mexico. Polk sales and marketing VP Ben Newhall commented on Georgi’s passing by saying Polk and parent DEI Holdings “…are deeply saddened to hear of Craig’s passing,” but he also said, “We are equally proud of the innumerable contributions he made to both the company and the speaker industry as a whole. He brought heart to Polk Audio

with a knack for problem-solving combined with an unshakable work ethic that set the foundation for our continued success. His influence is indelibly stamped on our culture.” During retirement, Craig spent much of his time with family, bicycling and working on an annual fundraising golf tournament benefitting the Home of Guiding Hands, which provides services to more than 425 individuals with developmental disabilities in San Diego’s East County, where Georgi lived with his wife and family.

Jeff Bauer came in from Chicago; Chip Phipps came up from North Carolina; Marylanders David Clayton and Barbara Norman, Eddie Looper, Jack Nuckols, Richard Maldeis and Kathy Hirsch were all at the picnic on Joe’s Field—what we recall as the practice field. We ate great food, drank beer and sodas, and laughed as we looked through the old yearbooks and told stories. We were the last group to leave the picnic tent. Chip and I went into the old gym to visit the wrestling room. We didn’t wrestle; we both thought we had done enough squat-thrusts and sit-ups for Coach Silsbee to last a lifetime, though you’d never know it today. Downie and Tom Codd, Brian Harryman, John Leocha and Christine Tatum, and Frank Speaks joined us for dinner on the Boone House lawn. It was a beautiful spring evening, the cap to

Jones: “Over the past two months, I’ve had the good pleasure of reuniting with several classmates, Andrea Gargagliano, Dan Zambrano, Emily Schneider, and George Everly, to compete in DC’s Bocce Ball League. Led by Angie, our fearless Captain, we just finished the regular season 4-1-1 and are playoff bound. Needless to say, if the MIAA competed in Bocce, Severn and the Class of ’02 would have been atop the league tables. Updates from team members include: “Dan is moving this fall to Atlanta, where he and his wife Laura will enroll in Emory’s MBA and PhD in Public Health programs, respectively. Dan notes that ‘All Severn alums who find themselves in the Atlanta area are invited to join the Zambranos for a slice of Georgia pecan pie, as soon as we learn where to buy it!’ After six great years in the Navy and tours in Japan, Iraq, the Pentagon and White House, Adam Jones will be separating from active duty this fall and heading to business school. “I’ve narrowed my final decision to Harvard and Wharton, and look forward to getting together with Severn grads for either “clam chowdah” or cheese steaks.” An update from Whitney Williams: “I’m engaged to Scott Harrison from Severn Class of 2000. We’re getting married in October of this year. High school romance at its finest. I’ve been working at Maryland Department of the Environment for four years. I work on farms to prevent water pollution from going into the Chesapeake Bay. Scott was just hired three months ago as the new Executive Chef at Pirates Cove in Galesville, MD.” Clayton McCarl and his wife Lindsay graduated from University of the Pacific, McGeorge Law School in May and were inducted into Order of the Coif. They are commissioned officers going into the Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps.

Zealand in May. Currently she is a practicing vet in New Zealand. Darren Frank, JD (2010) and LLM (2011) both from Georgetown Law Center, passed the North Carolina Bar exam. He started work for Mayer Brown, which by revenue ($1.2 billion) is the 14th largest law firm in the world. He works in their Charlotte office in the commercial transactions department. Christine Heinsohn and Jason Rogers of Severna Park were married in June at St. Mary’s Church in downtown Annapolis, with a reception at Annapolis Yacht Club. As for me, Helen Birney, I am a second grade head teacher in Brooklyn, NY at The Berkeley Carroll School (an independent school for Pre-K-12), as well as pursuing a masters degree in education at Bank Street College in Manhattan.

I love bringing my former experience with media production and passion for technology and the arts into my classroom! I am also teaching yoga on some weekends in the beautiful Catskill region of upstate New York. Possibly my biggest news of all would be that my wife Nora and I are starting a family, and I am due with our first baby(a girl!) in November.

Austin Eckert works at the Maryland Department of the Environment as a water resource engineer.

Jack Rosson received his commission from the USAF in June. He will attend Officer Training School in at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery Alabama this January and continue his studies in finance.

(He received his undergrad degree from St. John’s University in 2008.) He and his wife Kate are expecting their first child in September.

Ryan Brassel returned from Kate Myers ’04 and the wilds of Michigan Nicky Schmidlein ’04 and continues to work for Gallo wineries here in Maryland. Drew McCarl changed jobs and now works at the international firm Millenial Media where he is a technical recruiter. Kate Myers and Nicky Schmidlein got together in Brooklyn recently where they went to a launch party for an iphone app.

He serves in the United States Air Force and is pursuing a Masters Degree from Boston University.

Joe Morris, was captain of the Yale Sailing Team, and Sander Beck was captain of UMD Terp Baseball. Sander signed with the Baltimore Orioles this spring as a free agent. He is playing with the Aberdeen Ironbirds.

On the club lax circuit, Michele Manis for the 3rd year in a row was selected as the Southern Women’s Lacrosse League (SWLL) Defensive Player of the Year and 1st SWLL All Conference Team. Michele was also the first UGA player in history to be selected National Defensive Player of the Year by the Women’s Collegiate Lacrosse Associates (WCLA) and was selected for the 2nd year in a row Division I First Team All American and to the WCLA Academic All-America team for the fourth straight year.

Lainey Rosson also served as captain of her club lax team at the University of Miami of Ohio. Lainey recently accepted a job as a project coordinator at Gongos Research in Auburn Hill, MI. Chelsea O’Neill graduated from University of Richmond and currently is working for SAP America in its sales graduate academy in Scottsdale Arizona.

Emily Kraynak graduated from UMBC and is working towards her master’s in Instructional Systems Development at UMBC, which she hopes to complete by December 2013. In addition to school, she is working full-time as an intern with the education and development office of a company that is headquartered in Annapolis. Annie Weber graduated with highest distinction from Penn State and is going on to medical school. She received word of admission to Virginia Commonwealth University in on the last day of exams! She is still waiting to hear from UMD and Georgetown.

Evan Aras ended his outstanding collegiate sailing career on a meteoric note. As captain, he led the Georgetown Hoyas to a national sailing championship and was named an ICSA Co-Ed All-American.

Additionally he won B Division at the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association qualifier and again at the Eastern Region semifinals. He also helped Georgetown to victories at the Graham Hall Team Race Regatta at the Naval Academy and the St. Mary’s College Team Race event. Emily Eckert is in law school at the University of Chicago.

completed his final season of eligibility playing football with Bryant University this past fall while attending the MBA grad school. He helped Bryant achieve their most successful season in the NEC and a dramatic victory against undefeated Albany University, the eventual champions of the conference.

He was recently invited to join Beta Gamma Sigma, an International Honor Society that recognizes the outstanding academic achievements of students in collegiate business programs.

Salisbury U’s Chapter President of Beta Gamma Sigma informed Bob that Target Corporation graciously wanted to pay for Bob’s membership into BGS. Bob is in the top 10 percent of his junior class academically. He will be inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma in April of this year. In Jan, 2011, Bob accompanied Dr. Edward Zebovitz, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon,and his surgical team of doctors and nurses on a Medical Mission to the Republic of the Philippines, Province of Sorsogon. Bob was geared up in scrubs the entire time as a support member of Dr. Z.’s team.

Dr. Z performed corrective surgery on cleft lip and facial deformity patients, both young and old.

Ariel Mitchell’s play, “A Second Birth” is being produced as a mainstage production at Brigham Young University this September. • After taking a gap year, Craig Phelan decided to attend the Air Force Academy and has since joined the parachute team, Wings of Blue. Kristen Boulier graduated in three years with honors from Johns Hopkins University. Katie Dickerson is in India studying the neuroscience of healing and meditation.

“It’s a really neat program. We teach monks and nuns at monasteries basic science and they teach us about Buddhist culture. His Holiness the Dalai Lama is actually one of my professors!” she wrote.

Shannon Lane just completed her junior year at Villanova where she was named to the Big East All Academic Team for the 2011 season. Adam Cohen was named America East Conference Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week in February. Taylor Stout, an architecture major at U of Maryland, recently returned from a month-long ancient architecture tour through Turkey.

Mallory Orr is in Panama this summer experimenting with ideas for construction made out of the natural material cob. The idea came from a course she took last semester at the University of Vermont called Nature and Culture. She wrote practice grant proposal for a faux Ecotourism operation on cob houses and buildings and put them into a proposal for a small eco-hotel with cottages made of cob. She wrote, “I chose to create my hotel in the Southwest to attempt to improve the conditions of the Navajo Indians as part of a non-profit towards cultural fairness and equality. Also I chose the Southwest because it is an ideal location for the use of cob. Mackenzie averaged a league-high 6.0 points per game and posted an 18-24-42 scoring line in seven NLC games. In 18 overall games, Carroll has 69 points (33-36-69). She also had five game-winning goals, four coming in NLC games.

Sarah Brown drew an all-freshman team honor after recording four top-20 finishes during the year. In her first year of Division 1 golf at Mercer University in Macon, GA. Sarah found her way into the top 10 individually twice, including a ninth place finish at the A-Sun Championship. She also shot scores of 7670-74 to earn a ninth place finish at the Atlantic Sun Women’s Conference Championship. Sarah competed in every tournament for Mercer this year and this was her second top 10 finish in her freshman year.

Dillon Thomas Moran, 16, a beloved member of the Severn School community, passed away on December 3, 2011. Born in Annapolis Dillon attended Severn since the eighth grade. He had a great love for all types of music and played multiple instruments.

He was the bass guitarist for the Severn School band that performed in the Anne Arundel County Battle of the Bands competition. Dillon showed great aptitude in the technological field and loved any type of gadget. He was looking forward to studying engineering in college. A passionate athlete, he loved being part of a team. He grew up playing soccer and lacrosse for the Davidsonville Gators. He was currently a member of Severn’s men’s varsity soccer team, was captain of the men’s JV lacrosse team and played club lacrosse for Team Smartlink. A member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Davidsonville, Dillon loved wakeboarding, snowboarding, spending time with his family and friends and was loved by all who knew him. Dillon is survived by his parents, Martin and Barbara Moran; three brothers, 2nd Lt. Nicholas P. Moran, Cody Moran ’11 and Kyle Moran ’12. He is greatly missed.
