The celebratory year began with our first day of school welcoming 800 students on two campuses, followed by Convocation, the annual Welcome Back Bash, class bonding trips, club fair, assemblies, and the fall athletics season.

here has the time gone? 100 years ago Rolland Teel founded Severn School to prepare young men for entrance into the Naval Academy by providing a foundation for students to strive for excellence in character, conduct and scholarship. Today, we stand as a coed day school with over 800 students on two campuses in preschool through grade 12 and still provide an experience that builds excellence in character, conduct and scholarship in each student. At its Centennial, Mr. Teel would justifiably be proud of his school.

In this issue of The Bridge you will find articles ranging from how we kicked off the centennial year with an all-school convocation, to profiles highlighting alumni, to our announcement of Buzz Aldrin ’46 as this year’s David Astle ’92 memorial lecturer.

We may only be a few weeks into the ’13-’14 school year, but we are already moving at breakneck speed and celebrating our 100th in style.

This incredible success shows that our alumni, friends and parents are invested deeply in the monumental transforming work of Severn School.

Charting our destiny, however, is one with no end. Our goals are too ambitious and our students and faculty too talented for us not to plan for and aggressively seek support for their future. Each one of us is the beneficiary of those who have come before, and it is incumbent upon the present to carry on the legacy for the future. By keeping Severn School a philanthropic priority, alumni,

parents and friends can continue to proclaim a confidence in Severn’s present and an excitement about its future.

It is inspiring to be witness to and to be part of the genuine philanthropic culture that has begun to thrive at Severn. I

f you look at what’s been happening at Severn, you get the sense that something very exciting is going on,” says Kent Holtgrewe ’73. “Helping play a (small) part in Severn’s future is extremely gratifying – on any number of levels.”

As a three year varsity football player, Kent remembers summer football practice and playing ball with classmates including Court Williams ‘73, GP Lindsay ’73, Artie Barnes ‘73, Woody Wooddell ’73, Ron Staines ‘72, Steve Sterner ‘73 and others. Like all Severn students of that era, Kent pulled “waiter duty” in the dining hall before it became a cafeteria style dining facility. Severn became coeducational during Kent’s junior year. “As you might imagine, in the months before we went coed, there was extensive discussion among the guys regarding the impact the females would have on Severn. My biggest recollection is just what a moderating effect the girl’s arrival had on the guys’ general behavior.”

Severn’s faculty had a strong and lasting influence on Kent. “The high school experience is arguably the most defining period in a young person’s life. Certainly that was the case for me. As I progressed with my education (undergraduate at The University of Virginia and graduate school at The University of Chicago) I came to appreciate just what a special place Severn was and is.”

Kent was a student at Severn, from grades 9 through 12, during a time of national turmoil (1969-1973). During his time at Severn, many institutions were being challenged and authority in general was being questioned.

“We didn’t have anything like the physical plant the school enjoys today. As a matter of fact Severn was pretty spartan – with buildings quaintly named A Shack and B

Shack. However, we had a great faculty and administration committed to providing us with the best education and sports experience possible.“ “I was very fortunate to be at Severn at a time to take classes from the old guard, Paul Kesmodel, former Headmaster, teacher and coach, and former teacher Jonah Halstead, as well as the new guard, Lynald Sillsbee and Richard Louck.”

It was Julian Domenech, Sr., (father of current athletic director, Julian Domenech ‘84) his Spanish teacher and faculty member for over 27 years, who influenced him the ~ Domenech was an most. Says Kent, “Senor inspiring individual - not only to me but for many who had the good fortune to have him as a professor. He certainly pushed me to do more.” Kent had the opportunity to go to Spain for a semester after his first year at Virginia and another semester of study in Mexico during his third year. He credits Julian and Severn with affording him the confidence to travel.

“My experiences at Severn rounded me out in ways that I think would have probably come later in life.” Kent added that, Severn “accelerated the growing process” for the students. To this day, he still appreciates the exposure to competitive students and seasoned teachers. Severn helped develop his self-confidence. “I felt very fortunate and continue to feel fortunate for having attended Severn.”

Kent has supported the Annual Fund generously over the years and most recently made a gift to the Severn on Course Campaign. Why does he continue to invest in the school and stay in touch? “I believe Severn is on a tremendous track, and if the marketplace is an accurate indicator many

Kent is a founding partner of Accenture, a $29 billion multinational technology and consulting firm. He has recently completed several years of public service as deputy chief information officer at the U.S. Department of Justice. Kent and his wife Genoveva have lived in upper northwest DC for 34 years. Kent's parents, Virginia and Logan, are long time Severn supporters and have lived in the same home on the Magothy river since 1968. A professor of urology at Johns Hopkins University and an avid modeler, Dr. Holtgrewe recently built and donated a detailed scale model of Severn's Teel Hall using the original blueprints from 1914.

TEEL ACADEMIC CENTER Teel Academic Center, constructed in the late ‘60s with an addition added in 1984, originally housed the School’s boarding students.

As the focus for the Severn On Course campaign, Teel Academic Center will be renovated into a modern, spacious and state-of-the art facility in the near future.

Board of Trustees welcomes new members Jennifer Mann has a long family connection to Chesapeake Academy (CA).

Her husband of seven years, Christopher, is CA class of ’85 and came to the School when Wroxeter closed. Her father-in-law, Rod, is a trustee emeritus and mother-in-law, Sharon, ran the CA business office and helped launch CAPTA. Both were heavily involved in orchestrating financing, construction, and strategy of formally launching CA in 1980. Jen is a 1994 graduate of Connecticut College and currently works as a director/team leader for Prometric, Inc. in Baltimore. She has served on the development committee and the marketing committee for CA and was part of the exploratory team for the merger. Jen has two children at Severn (Davis ’25 and Tenley ’26).

Jim Murphy is a vice president of T. Rowe Price Group, Inc., and a portfolio manager in the fixed income group. He serves as president of the tax-free high yield fund, and is a member of the advisory committee for the summit funds. Prior to joining the firm in 2000, Jim worked as a portfolio manager for Prudential Investments. He received a B.S. in finance from University of Delaware and an M.B.A. in finance from Seton Hall University.

Jim has also earned the chartered financial analyst accreditation. Jim joined the CA board in September 2010 and has been the board chair since September 2012. He has been a member of the finance committee and has reworked CA’s investment policy guidelines and brought in new management to run investment strategy. He worked to consolidate and refinance CA’s debt into one MHHFFA loan. Jim has three children at Severn (Brendan ’20, Erin ’21 and Megan ’23).

Eric Pikus is a global managing partner for Korn Ferry International’s global financial market. Based in New York, he is also a member of the firm’s board & CEO services practice.

Throughout his career, Eric has successfully completed high profile Board of Director, CEO, COO, CFO, CCO, CRO, and CMO searches for both regionally-based and globally-focused, Fortune 1000 financial services organizations. He has also led prominent investors to operating and advisory talent across multiple asset classes in banking. Eric began his professional career in politics, heavily focused on research and campaign strategies on state and local levels.

He is an active member of the Association of Executive Search Consultants. Eric has served on the board of trustees of CA since 2012. Eric earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Washington College.

He and his wife Pixie have three children at Severn (Alec ’17, Lauren ’22 and Benjamin ’22).

Diane Sweeney, M.D. is currently the executive vice president for her family business, Pico Electronics Inc. located in Pelham, N.Y. She is an attending physician and associate director in the department of radiology, division of nuclear medicine for Washington Hospital Center. She received her M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1986 and graduated from University of Virginia in 1982. She has served as the vice chair of the Board at CA. She and her partner, Kelly Ballentine, have two children at Severn (Brett ’19 and Collyn ’21).

Eric Veiel is a vice president of T. Rowe Price Group, Inc., and T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc. He is a portfolio manager in the U.S. equity division. Eric is president, portfolio manager, and investment advisory committee chairman of the financial services fund. He is also an investment advisory committee member of the New America Growth Fund, Equity Income Fund, Capital Opportunity Fund, Value Fund, Dividend Growth Fund, Capital Appreciation Fund, Growth Stock Fund, and Growth & Income Fund. He earned a B.B.A., magna cum laude, in finance from James Madison University. Eric also holds an M.B.A., with concentrations in finance and accounting, from the John M. Olin School of Business, Washington University in St. Louis, where he was a Charles F. Knight Scholar. A trustee at CA, he has served as the treasurer, chair of the finance committee, and member of the executive committee. Eric and his wife Lori have two children attending Severn (Ben ’24 and Lizzie ’26).

Beth Gesner has served as a Unites States Magistrate Judge, United States District Court for the District of Maryland, Northern Division, Baltimore since 1999. She has also served as an assistant United States attorney and an assistant to the special counsel to the Attorney General, Malcolm R. Wilkey, U.S. House of Representatives Bank Investigation, Washington, D.C. in addition to many other professional positions.

She is a1979 graduate of University of Pennsylvania and a 1983 graduate of Georgetown University Law Center. She served on CA’s board of trustees from 2006-2008. Beth and her husband Larry have two children (Meg ’13 and Burt ’18).

Severn welcomes Stephen Maconi as Director of Development Severn School is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen Maconi as the school’s new director of development. An Annapolis resident, Mr. Maconi spent the last 19 years at the United States Naval Academy; four as the executive officer in the physical education department, and the last 15 at the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation.

Mr. Maconi has a long standing connection with Severn School, having both a son (John ’06) and a daughter (Caryn ’09) graduate from Severn. “I watched both of my children grow and prosper at Severn School.

Their experiences shaped them as young adults in ways that benefited them both in college and beyond. I am grateful for their Severn experience, and believe I can a make a difference for the next generation of Severn students.”

Mr. Maconi was most recently at the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, where he was involved in every aspect of the development effort. Most recently, he served as the vice president for development.

Mr. Maconi began his new role effective August 15. Molly Green ‘83, the longtime director of advancement will now assume responsibility for admissions and outreach, while Mr. Maconi will lead the development effort.

Founded in 1914, Severn School is in the midst of a comprehensive campaign, Severn on Course, which coincides with its centennial celebration this school year.

April 1, 2014 / Buzz Aldrin '46 to speak at Severn Severn School is pleased to announce that Apollo 11 Astronaut and Severn alumnus Buzz Aldrin will be its Astle Lecture speaker on April 1, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. in the School’s Edward St. John Athletic Center. This event is free and open to the public, although guests will be asked to register through our online registration, available closer to the event.

The David Astle Memorial Lecture Series was established by Maryland State Senator John and Jayne Astle in 1998 after the tragic accidental death of their son David Sheridan Astle, a member of the Severn School class of 1992. The David Astle Memorial Endowment funds an annual lecture series through which knowledgeable and/or inspirational speakers are invited to share their expertise, experiences, and messages with Severn School and the greater community.

A native of Montclair, N.J., Dr. Aldrin enrolled at Severn in 1946. Severn was a well-known and highly regarded school for intensive preparation to take the entrance exams to the service academies.

Later, on July 20, 1969, Buzz and Neil Armstrong made their historic Apollo 11 moonwalk, becoming the first two humans to set foot on another world.

“I am delighted that Buzz accepted our invitation to be our centennial year Astle speaker,” commented Headmaster Lagarde. “It is particularly fitting to welcome Dr. Aldrin back to the school he attended nearly 68 years ago.”

As is customary for Astle speakers, Dr. Aldrin will address Upper School students during the school day on Tuesday, April 1, join Senator and Mrs. Astle and other guests for a private dinner reception, and then speak to those assembled.

A Bullseye for Archery With popularity of The Hunger Games, Severn’s Middle School archery program has hit the bullseye.

K

atniss Everdeen - a deadly shot with a bow and arrow - may be their inspiration, but it is evident that more Severn students are compelled to try archery, and soon find that it is a thrilling, competitive, and rewarding sport.

Dan Mahoney, one of Severn’s athletic trainers and Middle School physical education teachers, launched Severn’s archery program through the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP), as a Middle School enrichment elective back in 2008. After five years the elective has grown in popularity among the Middle School with an average class size of 15 students.

The mission of NASP is to “Promote the teaching of target archery as a part of the in-school curriculum to improve educational performance of students and encourage their participation in the shooting sports. It was from this simple goal that the Kentucky Archery in the Schools Program was born.

Because sister agencies in other states agreed with our strategy, within a year KASP became the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP).”

Through NASP, Dan was trained as a basic archery instructor and now teaches his students the history of archery, safety protocols, online extra: Watch a sneak peek proper techniques, range of archery practice in the gym at rules and set up, and the www.severnschool.com/thebridge parts of a bow and arrow (see diagram on pg. 12). Shot set-up Release Follow-through The class meets three times a week in Memorial Gym and participates in a mock competition every Friday.

Through this enrichment, students have the opportunity to try a unique sport that introduces them to a new skill set and athletic activity. Archery provides a different avenue for students that may not excel in standard sports, such as football

or lacrosse, but provides an opportunity for those students to excel and experience success.

But don’t assume it’s all fun and games at target practice. Shooting a bullseye from 10 or 15 yards away is no easy task – and it requires practice, determination and most of all focus.

The multiple benefits from archery can also be seen in the classroom. Archery demands a high level of focus and discipline that has been proven to improve classroom performance. Dan states, “It’s more than learning how to shoot a bow and arrow, there’s a lot to be said about the mental preparation associated with the program that is helping the students succeed on the range and in the classroom.”

Last February, seven students (Nick Bertochhio ‘18, Cooper Emmons ‘18, Burt Gesner ‘18, Evan Judge ‘18,

Noah Jaccard ‘18, Savannah Siegrist ‘17, and Rana Yavuz ‘18) represented Severn at the Maryland state tournament at Hagerstown Community College, where Rana Yavuz ’18 placed 5th out of 53 girls and qualified for NASP’s national championship in May in Louisville, Ky. A big highlight from nationals was when the Guinness World Records confirmed the tournament with a world record for ’Largest archery

tournament’.

With the popularity of archery continuing to grow, the Upper School has formed an archery club. Hopefully, with the combined interest from the Middle and Upper School, Severn will send a team to the state tournament in February.

Sounds to us like archery has finally hit the mark - and the “odds are ever in its favor.”

The Circuit: The Other Side of the American Dream

On Thursday, September 19, all Upper School students and faculty participated in our annual Upper School Read, a wonderful shared intellectual experience. This year we explored themes from The Circuit: Stories from the Life of a Migrant Child by Francisco Jiménez. The Circuit chronicles the struggles of a strong family of migrant workers that endures many hardships while making their way up and down central California, picking crops for various farmers, and living in very basic shelters. Children in the stories grow up with limited educational experiences and often insufficient health care.

Told through the eyes of a young adolescent, Panchito, the stories provide a glimpse into the human costs associated with food production for the produce that seems to just show up on our East Coast grocery store shelves. While The Circuit takes place in the 1950s, many migrant workers who continue to work on the circuit today face the same challenges described by Jiménez.

During this year’s Upper School Read, titled “The Circuit: The Other Side of the American Dream,” students and faculty explored the hard work of what we commonly consider to be the American dream. Student leaders led introductory presentations to set the tone.

Teachers then encouraged students to consider the plight of migrant workers in

America and to examine issues related to immigration through a number of engaging, hands-on workshops. Worker safety was addressed in a workshop on the historic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire and in “The Production Line.” In “Creative Biography,” students illustrated (using their iPads) through photographs and poetry, how we each define identity. Literary and cultural representations of migrant workers were examined in “The Migrant Worker Experience in Movie, Song, and Novel.”

“Can You Pass the Test?” and “Immigration: a Global Challenge” offered various perspectives on current immigration practices, motivations, and challenges. The half-day of workshops concluded with a Skype interview with Francisco Jiménez, an honored professor of american literature at Santa Clara University. Students asked insightful and thought provoking questions about The Circuit, Jiménez’s personal experiences, and immigration laws.

At Severn, through playful engagement children find that there is so much for them to discover. The world of learning opens up to our youngest through stories, patterns, letters, songs and numbers. This first step into a new world instills the joyful passion of learning, the strong start that will propel students through life.

Through their different roles in our early childhood program they each offer a unique insight into the education of our youngest students.

Q: What makes the early childhood program at Severn unique to other preschool and prekindergarten programs?

CS: We maintain a low class size and have a full-time teaching assistant in each class. Our curriculum is developmentally appropriate for the children and is rooted in teaching phonemic awareness skills and number sense, as well as educating on social skills and emotional development.

CN: We believe in celebrating childhood while providing opportunities for each student based upon the child’s individual areas of “glows” and “grows.” Our students are provided with multi-sensory learning activities and purposeful play to enhance their social and pre-academic skills. Materials and instruction are differentiated to make learning exciting and meaningful to each child. Our outdoor learning area is full of opportunities for our students with the early childhood courtyard, playground area, large sandbox, trike and scooter path. Above all, children show a passion for coming to school each day and are greeted by faculty who have a genuine interest and talent in nurturing their growth and celebrating their successes along the way!

Q: Can you describe what a play-based program looks like?

CS: The children learn through hands-on activities, but absolutely everything we do has a purpose and objective. Whether it is a Playdoh center to build muscles to increase our fine motor skills, or sorting beads to teach the concept of like/difference attributes for math.

JZ: A play-based program looks just like it sounds. Children are at work: listening, speaking, making predictions and building rich vocabulary. They learn from each other by sharing experiences and then we encourage and support their natural curiosity by exploring and expanding the lessons from those experiences. Constructive, purposeful play makes learning fun.

CE: Our students learn from hands-on experiences and through expressing themselves in play centers - art, blocks, science, fine motor, dramatic play, listening, books, and sensory. Each center changes with our themes and reinforces early academic skills.

SH: Each child is known and valued at Severn School from preschool to grade 12. Our early childhood curriculum includes pre-academic skills, Spanish, art, music, physical education and plenty of fun! The diversity within our curriculum allows students to develop pre-reading, number sense and social skills all while discovering a love of learning.

EARLY CHILDHOOD

Q: What role does early childhood education have on life skills?

Q: What is your favorite aspect about teaching early childhood?

CS: Four year olds explore and learn about the world around them. As they become more confident and aware of their place in the world, through play they become future doctors, architects, bankers, chefs, teachers, veterinarians, firefighters, engineers, pilots, and scientists.

They build, pretend, connect, create, sing, dance, invent, and observe.

CS: The kids! I love being with the kids and watching them grow and develop into capable, enthusiastic, and independent students. After 14 years here, I love being a part of the family. My classroom is filled with laughter, smiles, and giggles. When a mom tells you, “He was mad at me all day yesterday because I kept him home with a cough,” you know you are doing something right.

CE: Communication with peers and adults, sharing, creativity, expression, gettting along with others, patience, pride, and achievement - it all starts here.

JZ: My favorite aspect is that no two days ever are the same. The learning that takes place when a child feels loved and safe is amazing.

MJ: We like to focus on the social relationships between the student and his/her peers. We give them the tools needed to communicate and problem solve. This is important to learn early on, because it builds upon life skills and student’s confidence that are developing.

MJ: I love building meaningful and long-lasting relationships with the children and their families. It is especially important to begin the child’s first school experience in a trusting, welcoming environment that fosters a love of learning. It is my goal for each child to feel that way in my classroom.

Q: “Kids say the darndest things!” Care to share one of the most entertaining moments in your classroom?

CS: There have been so many things that have made me smile over the years. One student announced “I have issues, Mrs. Saunders.” I questioned, “You have issues?”

Yes, real issues at home. And then picks up a tissue and says, “Just like these.” I said, “You mean tissues, dear?” and she said, “Yes, that’s what I said.”

MJ: One year I had a child bring me a gift almost every day. It would be anything from a stick he found on the way into school to flowers. One day in particular, he brought me in a used tube of strawberry toothpaste and a mini plastic trophy. When I asked why the unique gifts he replied, “Because you are the number one teacher, and I love strawberry toothpaste.” It was so sweet!

Q: How does technology (smart boards, iPads etc) play a role in the classroom?

CS: Children today are so “plugged-in” and technologically capable. It is such an integral part of their lives and our society so it is imperative to integrate it into the classroom. For example, when talking about space and space travel, I just pull up the NASA site and they can watch the clip of Neil Armstrong walking on the moon.

CN: Technology is used as a resource to enhance the instruction in the classroom. Technology can provide another level of having students use multiple senses to touch, hear, say, and see as they explore and extend concepts introduced in class. Technology also provides another way for students to present their learning through photos, writing, drawing and taking videos.

The Journey to Rio Joe Morris '08 gave us the inside scoop on his journey to Rio 2016 and taking home the Olympic gold medal for the United States.

It’s been a goal of mine since I was 11 years old to make it to the Olympics in sailing. I never really got into the sport until I started racing, and then I couldn’t get enough of it.

While at Severn I was lucky enough to be exposed to some other really great sailors and coaches. It was there that I saw the first bit of success winning the singlehanded nationals in ‘07 and double-handed in ‘08, which in large part was due to Severn’s support of sailing. We had a really special group during my time there, and that is where the idea of doing an Olympic campaign really became routed as my long term goal.

I feel extremely lucky to have the opportunity to chase down the dream. After graduation in 2012 I didn’t have the right person to sail with, which is a massive part of a successful campaign. I decided I wouldn’t do it unless I could do it right, so I ended up taking a job in Switzerland.

Thankfully, the right person became available when my college team mate called me in December looking for a new partner after his had suffered a serious shoulder injury while training. Thomas was two years ahead of me in school and also a four time All American and college sailor of the year in 2010 – the Heisman trophy equivalent for sailing - and one of my best friends in college. I left my job in Switzerland in December and we started training in January. It’s a risky endeavor, and one that you have to be 100% doubt free about.

It was a somewhat scary decision at the time but I will never regret it, regardless of the outcome of our campaign.

Between the sailing, physical training, logistics, and fundraising, it’s really more demanding than a full time job.

To execute a proper four year campaign you must be organized and have the capital to support it, so it is not always the most skilled guys that make it to the top. Frequently, a team’s off the water preparation and management skills are what propels them to the top of the world rankings and onto the Olympic team.

I really couldn’t be happier doing anything else at this point in my life. I’ve always loved sailboat racing, and being able to wake up every day with the mindset that we are going to work towards the goal of representing the United States at the Olympic Games is the ultimate feeling of motivation.

Celebrating a Century of Service Monument constructed to honor and remember the Severn alumni who served for the United States military.

The Century of Service monument features a large kedge anchor in front of a brick wall adorned with panels on which there are more than 1,500 rivets, visually representing the scores of Severn alumni who bravely and selflessly served in defense of our nation. Throughout the panel there are 84 rivets missing representing those alumni who paid the ultimate sacrifice and died in battle. The names of all the men and women who served will scroll continuously on a display panel integrated into the wall. Severn’s three Medal of Honor recipients will be represented by a star: Herbert Schonland ‘20, Bruce McCandless ‘28, and George Street III ‘33.

“For 100 years, with loyalty, skill and courage, Severn alumni have assumed integral roles in all branches of the United States military,” reflected Mr. Lagarde. “The men and women deserve our thanks and respect. Both this country and Severn School will be forever indebted to them; a debt that can never be repaid. These veterans have earned our undying gratitude and will forever inspire future generations of Severn students to strive for excellence.”

The other significant element of the monument is a 1,000 pound ship’s anchor. “The anchor is symbolic of Severn’s history

and commitment to military service,” continued Mr. Lagarde.

Our school seal features a ship’s wheel, an anchor, and a chain. The anchor, which is estimated to be 100 years old, will rest upon a raised platform adjacent to the commemorative wall.

The Century of Service monument will be officially dedicated as part of the Founder’s Day celebrations on Friday, November 8.

Uniting the Clans Scott MacMullan ’00 is new Alumni Association President

S

evern’s Alumni Association welcomes a new president this year, Scott MacMullan ‘00. An attorney, Scott started his own practice in Annapolis last year, focusing on civil, criminal, and family law matters. Recently, Scott was appointed to the Maryland State Bar Association's judicial appointments committee, where he is interviewing judicial applicants across the state of Maryland and submitting the committee's confidential findings to the Governor for consideration.

Scott knew he wanted to be a lawyer when he successfully argued for dismissal of a speeding ticket while he was in college.

Scott was, before welcoming Chesapeake Academy into the Severn family, what was known as a Severn lifer, starting in the 6th grade. “I went to Severn for seven years but I made friends for a lifetime,” recalled Scott. “The School has been good to me on both a personal and professional level. It is time to give back.”

One of his professional mentors is The Honorable Richard D. Bennett ‘65, a Rolland Teel Distinguished Alumnus. Citing the invaluable advice and guidance he has received from Dick, Scott also noted that “anytime I have reached out to any Severn alum, he/she has always been receptive to me and helpful.”

Scott played varsity lacrosse all four years in the Upper School, leading his teammates as a captain his senior year. He

was captain of both the JV and varsity football squads, was a Senior Prefect, and a member of the National Honor Society. “Scott is an outstanding individual to head the Alumni Association,” reflected Mr. John Bodley, Scott’s history teacher and football coach. “He was a great student and three sport athlete. Scott was a team leader that a coach could always rely on.”

Clearly Scott is a natural leader. Severn is delighted that he has agreed to now guide the Alumni Association as it moves into its next century. “Why am I doing this? It’s the same as when I was on the playing field during high school. I want to beat Boys’ Latin, Gilman, Loyola, Georgetown Prep or Landon. And especially that Catholic school by the water in downtown Annapolis. I just want to beat them on a professional level now. To do that, I want to ‘unite the clans’ and bring Severn’s network closer together.”

Scott’s goal is to connect all generations of Severn alumni, with a focus on recent alumni. “If we can engage and unite recent alumni with networking, community service, and career development opportunities, we can continue to build on and leverage Severn’s reputation within the local and world community. The traditional gripe regarding Severn alumni networking has been that Severn isn’t situated in a big city like Baltimore or DC. With new technology, social media and a flattening globalized world, that is no longer an excuse.”

Working with newly appointed Alumni Director Tyler Larkin ’03, Scott is formalizing and focusing the alumni association to build momentum. “The work of the association will provide alumni with the opportunity to take responsibility for the ongoing advancement of the School.”

Most immediately Scott plans to recruit new members to the Alumni Association. To that end, he’s creating four new committees: • Communications: strengthen the connection between all alumni and current students, and increase visibility of the Association.

• Development: increase participation in the Annual Fund.

• Leadership: recognize outstanding alumni and students who exemplify the mission and values of a Severn School education.

• Programs: develop new activities to encourage alums to reconnect with Severn.

He’d also like to organize a community service event with students and alumni, and to plan a networking Navy lacrosse event in the spring.

Wade Elected to Lacrosse Hall of Fame Release: 05/22/2013 by GoHeels.com

BALTIMORE, May 22, 2013 - The 2013 induction class for the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame has been approved by the US Lacrosse Board of Directors. Among the eight honorees elected to the Hall in 2013 is former University of North Carolina midfield great Ryan Wade (Severn School class of 1990), who played at UNC from 1991-94, leading the Tar Heels to the '91 NCAA title and '93 NCAA runner-up spot.

This year's eight-person class will be officially inducted in a ceremony, sponsored

by Bollinger Sports Insurance and the Markel Insurance Company, on Saturday, October 26, at The Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley, Md.

The members of the 2013 induction class are: Jim Berkman, Quinn Carney, Michele DeJuliis, Sue Heether, Bill Miller, Tracy Stumpf, Ryan Wade, and Michael Watson.

The National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, a program of US Lacrosse, was established in 1957 to honor men and women who by their deeds as players, coaches, officials and/ or contributors, and by the example of their lives, personify the great contribution of lacrosse to our way of life. More than 380 lacrosse greats are honored in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, which is located with the Lacrosse Museum at US Lacrosse Headquarters in Baltimore.

Wade will be inducted as a truly great player. He was a three-time All-American at the University of North Carolina, earning first team honors in 1993 and 1994, and second team honors in 1992. Additionally, Wade was tabbed as the USILA's midfielder of the year in 1993. Wade was the ACC's player of the year in both 1993 and 1994, and was a four-time selectee to the All-ACC team (1991-1994). North Carolina won four ACC championships during his tenure, and also captured the NCAA national championship in 1991. Wade was a member of three U.S. national teams, playing on the U-19 squad in 1992 and the world champion U.S. Men's National Team in both 1994 and 1998. He was selected to the All-World Team in 1998, and also named as winner of the Best and Fairest Player Award (MVP) at the 1998 world championship. Wade holds the UNC school record for most consecutive games with a point at 50 and he has the sixth longest goal-scoring streak in UNC history at 15 games.

1942 John Stephen Kappock of Highland Park, passed away peacefully at home April 19, 2013.

Beloved husband of Mary; loving father of Kevin, Catherine and Sinead; cherished grandfather of Eamonn and Liam Welch; dear brother of Edward (Jane) and the late Thomas J., fond uncle of many nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law and friend to many here and in Ireland.

1943 Walter ‘Tad’ Moyle Jr. of Pinehurst, N.C. passed away peacefully at home with family on August 1, 2013. Born December 24, 1923, in Washington, D.C., he grew up in Chevy Chase, Md., Washington, D.C., and Bronxville, N.Y. Walter ‘Tad’ Moyle Jr. '43 He attended Brookville Farm Country Day, E.V. Brown, Ben Murch, Alice Deal and Devitt schools. In New York, he attended Barnard School for Boys. In 1942, he attended Brown University and Severn School. In 1943, Mr. Moyle entered the United States Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1946, class of 1947. After resigning from the Navy in 1949, he attended The Alliance Française in Paris, France.

He joined Goldman, Sachs & Co. in 1950. He entered George Washington University Law School in 1952, where he graduated in 1955. He practiced law with his father’s firm, Moyle, Nelson, Cotton & Badger until 1964, when he became active in real estate in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. In 1976, he returned to Washington, D.C., where he practiced law until retiring in 1989. Mr. Moyle relocated to Pinehurst, in 1996, and in the following year married the former Mrs. Sofie Friedlander.

Born in Baltimore on August 29, 1931, he was the son of the late Ralph and Leona Frank Bonwit. A Ted Ralph Bonwit Jr. '49 graduate of Severn from 1949 yearbook School, Mr. Bonwit went on to Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., where he received a BS in political science. An astute businessman, he was involved in sales and merchandising in the Salisbury area where he resided over 50 years. He was part owner and later owner of R.E. Powell & Co. and the Coffman - Fisher Co. clothing and department stores. At a point in his career, he had 13 stores under his ownership. The R.E. Powell Co., started in Salisbury, eventually moved to Laurel, Del., and was known as Discount Land. After retirement, Mr. Bonwit was involved in drug and alcohol addiction counseling throughout the eastern shore. He volunteered much of his time to Hudson Health Services in Salisbury. He was a former member of the optimist club of Salisbury.

Philip P. Cartier '52 from 1952 yearbook

Philip P. Cartier, 78, of Poughkeepsie, passed away October 27, 2012 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He was born August 6, 1934 in Pittsburgh, Pa. to George Thomas Cartier and Aline Stier Cartier. Philip grew up in Maryland and

attended Severn School. He graduated from Duke University where he played varsity lacrosse with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He earned his MSEE degree from Syracuse University. Philip joined IBM in 1956 and remained with the company until his retirement. Phil was an ardent sailor, a celestial navigator, and a lifetime member of Chelsea Yacht Club. He loved both racing and cruising, and twice participated in the Bermuda Cup as a navigator. Phil was an artist and hobbyist, building ship models of uncommon quality. He also enjoyed model-railroading, painting, reading, and was a military history and genealogy buff. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marian G. Cartier, two daughters, and two grandsons.

He was born in Harrisburg on September 4, 1940, son of Charles G. and Evelyn M. Kohlhaas. He attended John Harris High School and graduated as valedictorian from Severn School in 1958. Phil served active duty in the Navy, stationed in Newport, R.I. aboard the USS Cascade. In 1965, he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Lebanon Valley College. Phil worked his entire career at the Mechanicsburg Navy Depot as a mathematician and research analyst. He also worked 30 years as a swimming pool salesman at Goodall Pools. After retirement, he continued to work for Goodall while enjoying traveling and his family. Phil loved all things sports, from cheering for Cumberland Valley, the Baltimore Colts and the Dallas Cowboys, to dedicating his time to youth sports. He rarely missed a sporting event involving his children or grandchildren as these were highlights of his life. Phil was an avid reader, collector, lover of animals and military history enthusiast, especially Civil War history. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, LaRue, a sister, three children and seven grandchildren.

1960 Steven Cecil Martin, 71, of Vero Beach, Fla., passed away on September 13, 2013 doing what he loved, sailing. Steve was born in Annapolis on February 7, 1942. He was a graduate of the Coast Guard Academy and an accomplished sailor. In 1964 he sailed in the Olympic trials. In 1992 he was inducted in Steven Cecil Martin '60 the United States Coast from 1960 yearbook Guard athletic hall of fame. After his coast guard duty, he started his career in Baltimore with IBM, where he met the love of his life Eileen. Three shorts months later they were married and decided to start an adventure.

They bought a sailboat and cruised the world. Two years later they found the quaint town of Vero Beach, Fla. Steve was a staunch protector of the Indian River Lagoon and its beautiful shore line.

He defended it for 38 years as the chairman of the city marine advisory commission. Steve was coowner of Sun Sweet Fruit Company and retired in 2004. He is survived by his wife Eileen, daughter Laura Martin, son Aaron and his granddaughters Quin and Tenley and his brother Kit Martin.

1963 Schuyler “Brooks” Channing, 69, of Lexington Va., formerly of Annapolis, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family on July 7, 2013. Brooks was the beloved son of the late Mary Ann and Charles Channing. He was a decorated United States Marine, having served in the Vietnam War. Brooks later attended the University of Maryland. R.L. was born on January 27, 1946, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Robert L. Smith Jr. and Retta Everette Smith. He graduated from Robert Leard Smith III '64 Mount Lebanon in 1963 and Severn School in 1964. He attended the University of Virginia and graduated in 1969 with a bachelor of arts degree. After graduation, R.L. was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy, serving as a lieutenant from 1969 to 1972 aboard the USS Mazama and USS Leahy during the Vietnam War. Upon leaving the service, R.L. worked as a stockbroker with Dean Witter in Washington, D.C. In 1974 he joined the United States Secret Service as a special agent in the Washington, D.C., field office. During his career with the Secret Service he was assigned to the intelligence division at USSS Headquarters, the vice presidential protective division for George H.W. Bush, the Miami, Fla., field office, and was the resident agent for the Tyler office. In 1995 he transferred to the Rome, Italy, field office where he was a liaison with foreign governments for counterfeit U.S. obligations, as well as having responsibilities for U.S. dignitaries traveling overseas. R.L. ended his federal career in the Austin, Texas field office as the resident agent in charge during the time that Gov. George W. Bush became president-elect. He retired after 26 years of dedicated service and a distinguished career that gave him the opportunity to serve presidents and vice presidents, work with foreign dignitaries, travel the world and to be an eyewitness to historical events in the making. In 2001, R.L. joined the staff of the newly formed internet bureau, serving as chief investigator under the direction of Texas attorney general John Cornyn. In 2004 he transferred to Tyler where he was the manager of the medicaid fraud control unit for the eastern dis-

trict of Texas. After 10 years of employment with the state of Texas, R.L. again retired. That same year he began work as an investigative consultant with the law firm of Ireland, Carroll & Kelley.

While health issues restricted his brief career with the firm, he thoroughly enjoyed his time in the “private” sector. R.L. was a devoted sailing enthusiast his entire life and had the honor of serving as commodore of the Tyler Yacht Club. He also enjoyed golf, hunting and was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. In later years he also enjoyed following the Texas Rangers. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Deborah Webb Smith; sons, Walker Smith, Arlington, Va., and Spc. Phillip Smith, United States Army; and by several nieces and nephews.

As a reminder, its not too early to be thinking about our 50th reunion coming up in 2015. Severn is celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the school this year at their “Big Party” on May 17, 2014. Our class will actually mark the completion of Severn’s 100th academic year so some folks have given thought to organizing a fall 2014 event for the class of 1965 in addition to the Alumni Weekend. Please let me know if you are interested in getting together to celebrate this milestone.”

Steve Clagett hosted classmates, Charlie Goodell ’65, Dick Bennett ’65 and Sandy Clark ’65 for lunch on a warm August afternoon at his beautiful home in Chesapeake Beach. Steve, for those who have not heard, was severely injured in a head-on collision on March 2 and continues his recovery at home. He suffered 16 broken bones in his legs, arms, and ribs causing him to endure 15 surgeries over 10 days to put all the broken pieces back together. His principle physician was a Severn parent, Dr. David Gens. Dr. Gens and his Baltimore shock trauma team were largely responsible for Steve’s favorable, if painful, recovery which continues today. The good news is that Steve is now mobile, still smiling, and has retained his sense of humor through all the recent

trauma. As is often the case when four members of the class of 1965 get together, the subject of lacrosse and the successful 1965 season naturally arose. We concluded that while we admire the style of the game that’s played today, and especially technology that makes lacrosse the exciting, if more pugilistic, sport it has become, we all agreed that the un-padded, leather helmet, wooden stick days offered athletic challenges that just don’t exist in 2013.

Paul Douglas Patrick, 63, of Boca Raton, Fla. passed away on January 5, 2013 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Doug was born in Ft. Wayne, Ind, graduated from Severn School in 1967 and then attended the University of Florida. Doug owned and operated Patrick Florists with his wife in Pompano Beach from 1974-1995. Doug’s passion was competing at NHRA drag racing events. He set numerous national records and won many trophies. He and his wife enjoyed traveling extensively in their RV to races all across the US. He is survived by his wife of 36 years Norma, his beloved children Michael Patrick, Brian Hodges, Jena Toledano, and three grandchildren.

Herbert “Lincoln” Wellander died suddenly July 13, 2013 at the Baltimore Washington Medical Center of a heart attack. Born September 17, 1955 in Charleston, W.Va., Lincoln was the son of the late Herbert Wellander and Madeline Wellander. He attended Severn School and Wroxeter on Severn where he played both football and lacrosse. Lincoln also attended the University of Maryland, College Park and played lacrosse. He was a member of the University of Maryland’s 1975 NCAA lacrosse championship team. He is survived by his son, Beau Nickerson.

For many years she supported Bat Conservation International as well as other environmental causes. Amy found her greatest fulfillment, however, in being a mother to her son.

She is also survived by a son, Eric Branigin, 11. Amy was a Amy Weingartner Branigin '81 graduate of Severn School and St. Mary’s College, where she studied art and design. She made several trips to Europe to study gothic cathedrals, and used her artistic talents to design her own home and complete many of its interior and exterior design elements herself. She had been employed by American Express Travel in Annapolis, as a travel and financial agent; by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, DC as a graphic artist; and, at the time of her illness, by CMS Industries in Bloomington, also as a graphic artist. For several years she volunteered at Bloomington Montessori School, where she compiled and designed the monthly newsletter, as well as

Severna Park is about to get a lot sweeter, as local woman Abby Larkin (attended Severn School grades 6-8, class of 2006) has plans to open Sofi’s Crepes on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard this summer.

Larkin, 25, spent the last four years working at Sofi’s Crepes in Annapolis and saved up enough money to purchase a franchise location for Severna Park. Having lived in the area her entire life, opening a business in her hometown seemed like a perfect fit.

“I grew up in Severna Park and went to Severna Park Elementary right behind the store,” Larkin said. “I thought it would be a great location for Sofi’s, so I bought into the franchise.”

Sofi’s Crepes claims to have “mastered the art of crepes” and Larkin said it’s more than just a traditional crepe with cinnamon and sugar. Sofi’s Crepes offers more of a crepe sandwich wrapped up in foil so it can be enjoyed on the go.

Having worked at the Annapolis location for four years, Larkin said some of the more popular menu items are the Kevin Bacon, the Bacon Egg and Cheese, Apple Crisp and Nutty Banana.

“What we usually say is it is a French burrito type,” Larkin said.

“You can fill it up with savory or sweet items. And people just know it is a very thin pancake. “

After graduating from Severna Park High in 2006, Larkin earned her Associate’s Degree from Anne Arundel Community College. She said opening a business is always something she has wanted to do.

“I just like the customer service and being around people and working with people,” she said. “I enjoy cooking the crepes and serving them to people.”

George Everly III, counsel for the U.S. Senate Budget Committee, has been selected as the 2013-2014 Supreme Court Fellow assigned to the administrative office of the United States Courts. The Supreme Court Fellows Program George Everly III '02 was created in 1973 by the late Chief Justice Warren E. Burger to provide promising individuals with a first-hand understanding of the federal government, in particular, the judicial branch. In the words of Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., the program offers “a unique opportunity for exceptional individuals to contribute to the administration of justice at the national level.” George’s duties will include analyzing and implementing studies requested by Congress or the Judicial Conference, researching the federal rulemaking process, and drafting publications on administrative issues of interest to judges. His fellowship begins in the fall in the Office of Judges’ Programs. Prior to his time in the U.S. Senate, George gained federal and state government internship experience at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, with Judge Clayton Greene, Jr., of the Maryland Court of Appeals, and with and the Apartment and Office Building Association. He has authored and co-authored several articles, including his most recent work, Sovereign Wealth Funds and Shareholder Democratization. George earned a B.A. in economics and history from Saint Mary’s College of Maryland in 2006, and an M.B.A. from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland in 2010. He also earned a J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law in 2010, where he was senior editor of the Maryland Journal of International Law. Kudos, George!

The couple reside in Moseley, Va. Chase Bourdelaise and Keri Houser ’05 recently got engaged. Chase proposed to Keri in Boston in their apartment. They hope to get married in St. Anne’s Church of Annapolis, in October of 2014. Keri and Chase are both working in Boston, Keri for EMC and Chase for Studley Inc. Chase is also working on the side to launch his new product called Fiesta-Five (press.fiesta5.com). Fiesta Five lets you blast confetti from your hands whenever you give a high-five. Send notes to: Courtney Dunn ctd231@gmail.com For artist Missy Hammond Dunaway the future has taken flight. “Pictorial Encyclopedia of Shakespearean Birds,” a painting by the Carnegie Mellon University alumna and Fulbright scholar, was recently acquired by The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. The work is the largest in her series of paintings focused on feathers, a project she began as a senior at CMU. Inspired by a love of “artwork that illustrates science,” Dunaway’s ink painting took her three months to complete and features feathers from every non-mythical bird alluded to in Shakespeare’s writings. And the Bard referred to more than 60, ranging form cuckoos to ravens, often using them in a detailed manner as poetic symbols of his observations on humanity. While at school, she studied art and material and visual culture--an individualized mix supported by the BHA program. She recently received yet another honor, a Fulbright Award for a year’s study and research in Istanbul and Konya, Turkey, beginning this fall (Missy actually left September 12th). While in the midst of a new series of paintings based on carpets, she discovered the ‘Konya Carpets’ from the Turkish Seljuk Empire, of which only 18 survived. She’ll have the opportunity to study them in person, as well as Seljuk architecture, art and artifacts with the goal of painting her image of other lost pieces to “help historians re-imagine this lost piece of history.” Missy’s work can be viewed online at www.mhdunaway.com.

Paull Phillips '62 recalls being left at Severn School. Paull, a three-year boarder remembers his parents off in other parts of the world attending to his father’s naval career, while he attended to his studies in Severna Park.

Paull didn’t feel abandoned, however.

He made dear friends at Severn, many whom he still keeps in touch with to this day. He expressed that they were lucky to be at Severn during the last of the really strong boarding era. Despite rigorous academics that kept students busy, they still managed

from the chairman of the board On behalf of the Severn School Board of Trustees, I am pleased to report that the 2012-2013 academic year was another prosperous year for Severn School.

With over $660k in gifts to the Annual Fund, the school’s operational

needs were fully realized, allowing the Board of Trustees to focus on the people, programs and resources necessary to celebrate Severn School’s centennial and complete Severn’s campaign; Severn on Course. Severn School looks forward with great anticipation to its centennial celebration.

The 100th anniversary provides a unique opportunity to both honor our

past, and celebrate our future. Our centennial celebration offers the chance to reflect on the last 100 years, to amaze at the physical changes on campus and to marvel at the curricular advancements, while embracing the found-

merger with Chesapeake Academy, the developing plans for Teel Academic Center, a focus on 21st century curriculum with iPads for faculty and students, and a commitment to growing the endowment all provide unprecedented opportunities to position Severn School to succeed and excel in a complex and ever changing world.

The centerpiece of the Severn on Course campaign, the Teel Academic

Center will provide a modern, spacious state-of-the-art facility that compliments teaching, enhances education and makes learning more accessible to all students.

The physical campus, the accomplished faculty and the comprehensive

academic and co-extracurricular programs at Severn School have all been enhanced by the generosity of the Severn community; alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends. The ongoing pursuit of Rolland Teel’s vision of a life fully realized for each and every student will require the ongoing support of the entire Severn community.

Serving as chairman of the board of trustees is indeed an honor. Not

only do I enjoy the privilege of working with an extraordinary group of individuals, but I appreciate the opportunity, as a Board, to work closely with you in pursuit of a school fully realized.

Sarah Dunaway Silverman ’02

Sarah Dunaway Silverman '02 sat down with us to share why she supports Severn. Thank you - to Sarah and all of our generous alumni donors for your continued support of the School.

Sarah Jane Dunaway Silverman ’02 recalls feeling immediately at home the first time she visited Severn’s campus. With a father in the Navy, she had already attended 14 different schools, but this one felt special. The campus was welcoming, and Sarah was pleased to see students congenially sitting outside eating lunch.

Sarah came to Severn to start her sophomore year of high school. She especially wanted to attend because the McCleary Student Center had just opened. Sarah wanted to become an artist and she saw Severn’s commitment to the arts.

Sarah credits Severn with teaching her how to study and to learn. She reminisced that she might have worked harder in high school than in college. She hated science but Mr. Ian Carr was an inspiring teacher and really pushed her.

write her college recommendations. Today Sarah works in advertising and spends her days writing copy. She credits Severn with giving her excellent writing skills. She still thinks about her English classes with Mr. Bill Lamb and Ms. Jay O’Malley.

In Mr. Richard Zmuda’s journalism class, she learned to think and write for the media.

Sarah is grateful to be a part of the Severn family and feels that it’s an honor to be alumna of the School. In gratitude, she has given a gift to Severn every year since 2006 when she graduated from college. She was the youngest alum to support the Edward St. John Athletic Center campaign when she pledged to donate for a locker. She loyally paid toward her pledge each month, and even through moves and new jobs, getting married and life changes, she completed her pledge this year.
