And all of a sudden we were at Oulton Park on the August Bank Holiday, for those not going to Spa this would be the penultimate race of the 2017 Championship. Since the deluge of 2009 when the outer paddock was still surfaced with grass (and mud) the weather has invariably been fine and since the paddock was resurfaced with Tarmac, Road Sports have made it their own.

Richard Attwood is happy to recall stories of his racing exploits from the 1970s and we are even happier listening to him.

There is still rather too much flotsam and jetsam down the middle of the paddock but the 70s presentation of the race cars was the best yet, with a large proportion of the grid confidently arranged in the dappled light beneath the trees bordering the paddock. The Saturday night barbecue has become a popular Gold Cup tradition and the weekend was further enhanced by the Soap Box Race held on the circuit after qualifying had finished for the day. The six Soap Boxes that gathered for this inaugural race were built with varying degrees of creativity, quality and effectiveness, but all were raced with enthusiasm and fuelled by much laughter. All this action before the actual racing started kept Charlie Wooding’s camera busy as you will see from the following pages. Just 3 weeks after the Gold Cup was the Spa 6 Hour weekend, there was a good turn out of 70s competitors but we would love to look at

ways to encourage more competitors to make the trip. Richard Attwood has become a very popular member of the 70s paddock and it was fascinating hearing Richard talk about racing on the old 14km Spa when there were houses, trees, telegraph poles, barns and other obstacles located right next to the track and he remembers the dangers well from driving Grand Prix and Sports Cars in the 1970s.

A random comment during a sociable dinner before the Silverstone International in May, resulted in a remarkable display of Soap Box Racers, as they were known in the 70s before ‘Moisturising Body Lotion’ was a thing, adorning the Oulton Park paddock at the end of August.

Jim Dastardly in his professionally prepared racer along with a Motley selection of Soap Boxes gather for the start of the first race accompanied by Noel Wilson in his ‘Motor Sport for MS’ record breaking mobility scooter.

As the Soap Boxes were revealed to an expectant paddock it was clear that a lot of ingenuity, resourcefulness and improvisation had been used. It was no surprise to see Steve Bellerby had built a painted masterpiece, the steering mechanism of David Tomkinson’s was a pipe work monument to the skill of a heating engineer. Howard Payne had gone back to the origins of the 70s Soap Box Racer utilising pram wheel and a minimalist wooden chassis which reportedly developed a death wobble at speed and Jim Dean had disk brakes. Mark Leverett built an effective and efficient engineering tour de force. Stunned by the lack of speed from his racer Julian claimed that he now knew what it was like to race an Alfa before jumping ship to pilot Howard’s Soap Box in Race 2. OultonPark SUNDAY 27TH AUGUST 2017

The Border Reivers were lawless clans whose lifestyle consisted of marauding across the border between Scotland and England and Russell Paterson, a modern day Scottish raider, loves the Oulton Park event drawn by the attraction of stealing away with the Gold Cup. Russell’s Morgan is beautifully prepared and wound up on pole, Charles’ Datsun shared the front row, followed by the Europa of Will Leverett, out of a strong 28 car entry.

0.061sec behind Steve Bellerby, 0.526sec ahead of Dave Karaskas and a massive 4.00sec ahead of his nearest Class rival Mark Oldfield’s Lancia Monte Carlo.

However this weekend the normally competitive Lotus Europa of Jim Dean was struggling for pace and qualified behind the similar car of Howard Payne, both were slightly slower than the Invitation Ferrari 308 GTB of Greg Thornton .

Martin Dyson had also returned following the dramas at Silverstone earlier in the year but the performance of his Triumph GT6 was hampered by a weak head gasket.

Mark Bennett put in an inspired performance to qualify ahead of Richard Attwood and Robert Gate back in his E-Type giving us three entries for the big engined class A. Neil Brown was the filling in a TVR 3000M sandwich, qualifying his Lotus Eclat just

Jon Wagstaff was also suffering from problems with a rebuilt engine in his Alfa and would be unable to start the race along with Peter Head who continues to find his MGB a challenging companion. Meanwhile the potential challenger to Russell’s pole position was languishing in the paddock – Julian should have been out in Peter Shaw’s HSCC 70s Road Sports – October 2017

With the Europa out of action Julian drove the perfect imaginary qualifying lap, easily the fastest lap ever seen at Oulton Park before realising he would still have to start from the back of the grid. All images: ©Charlie Wooding Photography

Europa but blew the electrics when the battery was connected incorrectly; after re-wiring the essential bits it was ready for the race on Sunday. With virtually a full day available before Sunday’s race Steve Bellerby and Andy set up a 70s field hospital (very reminiscent in style to the legendary TV series M*A*S*H) where they attended to the various maladies afflicting the wheeled combatants, although Chris Baxter was unable was forced to withdraw his Lotus 7 before the race started. As the lights went out the Datsun held a slight edge into Old Hall, staying on the outside of Russell’s Morgan which became the inside for Cascades to lead along Lakeside. Charles was clearly carrying a lot more speed through Cascades than the Morgan which became his downfall on lap two with a large grassy moment letting Russell into the lead he would hold until the chequered flag. HSCC 70s Road Sports – October 2017

Meanwhile Dave Karaskas retired his TVR with gearbox problems, Martin Dyson decided to call it a day before causing further damage to the GT6 engine and Chris Fisher was running half a lap behind everyone else, his Arkley stripping the teeth off first gear as he dropped the clutch at the start – let’s hope the tooth fairy is kind when the rebuild starts. The Ferrari of Greg Thornton was retired after three laps, and Robert Gate stopped on lap five. Howard Payne also retired his Europa at mid distance with a sticking throttle. Mark Oldfield was keeping Neil Brown awake for the lead of Class D, filling the mirrors of the Lotus Eclat with the bright yellow Lancia for five laps before the smell of hot oil started filling the cockpit, checking he hadn’t left the deep fill sandwich toaster plugged into the cigarette lighter Mark decided to retire before the problem became a crisis.

Meanwhile Julian was determined to join the battle for the lead, carving his way up to 8th by the end of the first lap and had slotted the dark blue Lotus between the battling Europas of Jim Dean and Will Leverett on lap four. By the time Julian broke free of the high speed Lotus train the battling Datsun and Morgan were already six seconds up the road, although Charles wasn’t letting Russell relax.

Richard Attwood was lapping with metronomic consistency, clearly running at a pace he could happily maintain for the next 24 hours (if there wasn’t a lawn that needed mowing at home) to finish behind the MGB V8 of class mate Mark Bennett, creating an interesting contrast between the choices available to sporting motorists from Germany and the UK in the 1970s.

BY THE TIME JULIAN BROKE FREE FROM THE HIGH SPEED LOTUS TRAIN THE BATTLING DATSUN AND MORGAN WERE ALREADY SIX SECONDS UP THE ROAD.

HSCC 70s Road Sports – October 2017

Mark Leverett had found the seconds that had gone missing during qualifying but was still unable to hang onto the lead group whilst Jim Dean began to struggle for pace slipping back towards Steve Cooke’s Lotus 7 to lose 5th position on the last lap. Will Morton had been making quiet progress in his Porsche 924 but once a farmer always a farmer and after a couple of grass cutting moments Dave Erwin snatched 2nd in class D, although Will just managed to hold off the advances from Sarah Hutchison’s Lancia Beta Julian had latched onto the tail of the lead group by lap eight to challenge for 2nd place as the Datsun was beginning to suffer from overheating brakes and the Lotus was also in trouble with leaking brake cylinder seals resulting in Red Arrow style smoke trails as the fluid scorched on the front disks. As Charles and Julian scrapped for position on the final lap with the remaining vestiges of stopping power Julian missed the Knickerbrook Chicane slotting in behind the Datsun on the run up Clay Hill before they both performed a synchronised brakeless outbraking manoeuvre into Lodge with Julian

just scraping across the line in front of Charles by a mere 0.182sec. Ahead of this excitement Russell was able to eke out some breathing space to take the winners flag with a 3 second advantage. Despite putting up a heroic fight against the Morgan Plus 8 for the duration of the race Charles extended the hand of friendship on the podium to the Scottish Raider for a battle well won and expressed his hopes for a return match more frequently than once a year. Whilst others pondered on the possibility of a return raid – what chances of a 70s Road Sports Championship race at Knockhill to liberate the Gold Cup or maybe a Tartan Trophy from Russell Patterson? Charles Barter chased Russell Patterson for most of the race only to lose 2nd place to Julian on the line by 0.182sec All images: ©Charlie Wooding Photography

We’llBounceBack CAMBRIDGE REGIONAL COLLEGE – HISTORIC RACE TEAM

Change of Name but not Fortune. Mechanical issues blighted the Cambridge Regional College race team at Croft and continued at Oulton Park as the student crewed race team saw another decent result slip from their fingers. Lewis Beales “Highly disappointing” reflected Lotus Europa owner and driver Howard Payne. “It hasn’t reflected the hard work everybody has put in but we will bounce back for sure at Silverstone”. A mid-season engine rebuild, prompted by the water pump springing a leak at Cadwell Park, was the fore runner to blowing the head gasket after just five laps at Croft in early August. Repaired and ready to go the team was highly encouraged when Payne planted the Europa sixth on the HSCC 70’s Roadsports grid at the prestigious Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting. Second in class showed the potential of the team but excessive wheel spin at the start saw Payne slide down the race order to complete the opening lap in tenth place HSCC 70s Road Sports – October 2017

Payne put his head down and the student tended car started to pick off the cars in front. “The car is great around the corners if still a little short of top end engine power” reflected Payne but he was able to move up to seventh place with ease. “I had my sights set on sixth but then had a scare when I started to brake and the car kept going with the throttle stuck open” declared Payne who slowed and brought the car back to the pits at the half distance mark. “It wasn’t worth the risk of carrying on and possible ending up having a big accident”. “Disappointing” said race team leader Lewis Beales. We will modify the linkage before the next race so it can’t happen again”.

CHANGEABLE WEATHER IS ALL PART OF SPA MYTHOLOGY BUT IT CAN ALSO CHANGE FOR GOOD AND DESPITE THE PRE-EVENT PREDICTIONS OF BIBLICAL RAIN, SATURDAY THE DAY OF THE 6 HOURS WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY DRY.

HSCC 70s Road Sports – October 2017

One knows in advance that when venturing into the Ardennes changing weather is to be expected, however anyone looking at the weather forecast in advance might have been wondering if there was any likelihood of a dry interlude. Seventeen hardened 70s souls made the trek, (we would love to see more) forming part of a capacity grid of 65 cars for the HSCC closed wheeled event, which offered a 30 min qualifying session and two 30 min races spread over the three days – all in the dry this time, unlike some of the other races which suffered various degrees of precipitation. Most of the 70s regulars set up shop together appropriately in the centre of the old paddock, opposite the petrol station, a favourite place to watch the 6 Hour competitors refuelling during the evening. Richard Attwood made the journey to pedal the 40th Anniversary Porsche 928, having been at the Goodwood Revival the week before. During quieter moments Richard was happy to recall the old 14km full circuit when driving either Grand Prix cars or Sports cars, and remembers the dangers well. Race 1: Will Leverett stormed to a win in his Europa dropping below the three minute lap with a 2:59.817 having sneaked by Jim Dean this time out with the green and yellow Elan. Richard Attwood clearly felt more at home on a ‘proper’ circuit drifting the big Porsche through Eau Rouge every lap whilst playing the long game allowing Charles to build a 6sec gap before reeling him in, filling the mirrors of the blue Datsun at the finish. Dave Karaskas was next up, bedding in a rebuilt gearbox he is still getting used to the

TVR, wrestling the car around the challenging ribbon of tarmac like Robert Mitchum in Thunder Road. Steve Bellerby was keeping out of trouble but enjoying his first visit to the circuit in his yellow TVR. Dave Erwin who was celebrating his 10th Anniversary to the circuit and lapping 3sec quicker than on his previous visit kept Robin Eyre-Maunsell company before a wobbly moment allowed Robin to clinch the class victory, Sarah Hutchison kept a watching brief behind the duelling Alfas in her Lancia. Race 2: Sunday continued delivering the excitement, an albeit bleary eyed, Julian Barter who now knew the track with his eyes closed took over the Jim’s Elan and set off after Will Leverett passing him on lap two before setting off after a ‘Teatray’. As everyone who has watched one of Julian’s videos knows he treats struggling Sports Racing Cars ‘Teatrays’ like lame Wildebeest, any straggler is pounced upon and devoured. Dragging Will in his slipstream Julian lowered the 70s Spa record to 2:56.990 with Will fractionally behind, recording a 2:57.62 before Will slowed nursing a broken gearbox to retain 2nd position. Charles and Richard picked up where they left off with Richard allowing Charles to open a 6sec gap before relentlessly reeling him back in, the Porsche again finishing 4th a little over a second behind the Datsun . Dave Karaskas and Steve Bellerby retained their positions from Race 1 along with Robin Eyre-Maunsell and Dave Erwin who again kept each other company, unfortunately Sarah Hutchison was forced to retire without brakes. ‘WILL DID RATHER WELL THIS WEEKEND! GETTING WORRIED! BEST LET HIM GET ON WITH IT NEXT YEAR, OR... MAYBE NOT!’ JULIAN BARTER

HSCC 70s Road Sports – October 2017

‘AMAZING WEEKEND’ STEVE SKIPWORTH What an amazing weekend! The first thing to comment on is that cars obviously get jealous. The more time spent on the E type the more the Lotus resented it. She might be younger, have dazzling head lights and be firmer all round, but she resented not being the main event. For both 70s races she lost power during the warm up lap and like Herbie refused to race. A failing distributor the technical reason. Richard Attwood was clearly at home on the Spa circuit keeping Charles on his toes in both races. Sarah Hutchison and Dave Erwin mix with a huge variety of cars. 70s was also represented in the 6 Hour Race, although after delays in earlier races and a 10pm curfew the Spa Five Hours 10 Minutes as it came to be known, with Jim Dean and Julian Barter sharing the Steve Skipworth E Type Jaguar. Steve Skipworth The Spa Six Hour is quite a unique event. 120 mad heads blasting around the circuit with the hope that they might survive 360 minutes. Luckily ‘Team 75’ had a car that showed no signs of stopping. Fitted with endless brake pads, the oil pressure never faltered and it’s water temp never went above 75’c. A great machine. Steve Skipworth had the first stint, commenting “It was like an over sold track day where the cars were heavy with fuel and the drivers had no manners. Exciting chaos.” Jim drove a great second sector taking us to first in class and right up the field. Julian (Badger) Barter had the night stage but refuelling is a bit of a lottery at Spa, it’s not HSCC 70s Road Sports – October 2017

done in the pits but at the petrol station at the foot of Eau Rouge and the car was delayed for more than 5 minutes. Julian re-entered the race fifth in class and had two hours to put things right. He was further hampered by a couple of deployed safety cars which each froze the race for 20 minutes. That left 80 minutes for our star in a reasonably priced car to catch the opposition. By the end we were third in class and on the podium. The next car was thirty seconds ahead and was so nearly caught. A great team drive. Standing on the Spa podium with a large crowd cheering and our contingent of 70s support whooping was a once in a lifetime experience.

‘GREAT ACHIEVEMENT’ CHARLES BARTER

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Jim Dean and Julian Barter sharing the Steve Skipworth E Type Jaguar. After steady progress Steve handed over to Jim who started pulling the E Type up the field and when Jim handed over to Julian it was almost dark, however it was starting to come into contention for Class awards; Julian continued its progress outpacing many in front of him to bring the car, which ran faultlessly, home in 3rd in Class – a great achievement.

What an amazing weekend! We will win next year. Go ‘Team 75’.

SPA 6 HOURS ‘WHOOP WHOOP’ 17.09.17 CATE DEAN Hey, taken several days to recover from the celebrations of the Spa weekend! Spa 6hr saw ‘Team 75’ (car no.75 Jag E-Type) 70s drivers Skipworth, Dean & ‘Badger’ Barter take 3rd in class, whoop whoop... And 49th overall, whoop whoop whoop! 75th on grid out of 115 rolling start contenders, an absolute amazing achievement for the team. Pomery (Spa 6Hr Champagne sponsor) and partying to small hours.

‘CAN’T STOP GRINNING’ JULIAN BARTER Team 75 turned up with no aspirations yet finished 49th after starting 75th and number 75 with not a scratch on the car compared to many, many others. My assessment of the lights on the Jag. ‘I love it when I overtake or get overtaken by cars as I can actually f****** see something!’ Can’t stop grinning! Very stressful especially being last driver in a 6 Hour race!
