comment
We have enjoyed numerous good weekends at this picturesque, and at the same time demanding circuit. What a contrast from the wide open spaces of the GP circuit at Silverstone on a damp morning. Charles Barter I can well recall the pleas from members, “wouldn’t Cadwell be great if we raced there when there were some leaves on the trees”. Our wish was granted many years ago and since then we have enjoyed numerous good weekends at this picturesque, and at the same time demanding circuit. What a contrast from our previous meeting, the wide open spaces of the GP circuit at Silverstone on a damp unwelcoming morning, which later in the day turned to monsoon type rain, to a weekend where records were to be broken, not on track but of those that relate to weather – it was scorching, and uncomfortable whether driving open wheeled or closed wheeled cars.
Richard spent time regaling past experiences, nine times at Le Mans, and countless other exploits over his career and more than happy to answer questions. There is a huge benefit in parking up together in the paddock, the atmosphere for the whole weekend is greatly improved and we have the opportunity to give out the awards, as well as a bit of socialising. Paddock layouts and their organisation is just one of the items I will be pressing the Club to improve, not just for next year but for the rest of this year – I hope the Croft paddock parking will be much improved when we arrive this August.
On the Saturday it seemed a good idea to give out the Class awards and link it in with celebrating Chris Fisher’s birthday, after all Sue had supplied a cake which went down well with a cold beer. Richard Attwood who was enjoying his first ever visit to Cadwell, but perhaps not the effort required in the heat hauling the mighty Porsche 928 round the tight track, joined us and said how much he enjoyed racing with 70s, hoped to do all of the events including Spa – he however had to miss Brands Legends having previously committed to Goodwood Festival of Speed for the entire four days. ‘IS THIS THE HOTTEST CAR ON THE GRID?’ PETER SHAW
‘I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HARIBO’ DAVID TOMKINSON
I’d like to say thanks to Iain Daniels for preparing the Europa to our usual high standards. It ran faultlessly all weekend. Paul Tooms and I took a race each in the car and we both managed the 3rd podium spot which I was delighted with given it was the first time in the car for us both.
Great weekend and two great races. Will Morton in the first race kept me at bay despite numerous attempts to get past him. He started to pull away at the end and I’d like to blame it on brakes, hot engine but frankly, I was exhausted.
Interestingly both Paul and I managed to briefly get ahead of Julian’s Elan on the first lap but he managed to find away back through within a lap. Mark Leverett is getting the hang of his Martini striped Elan and both Paul and I had him in close pursuit, he had a good battle with Paul passing him and then being repassed after a great move from Paul up the inside at the end of the Park Straight. The heat generated in the small Europa cabin was incredible, above 50 degrees – is this the hottest car on the grid!?
‘NO REPEAT OF LAST SEASON’ MARCUS PYE Although father Charles (Datsun 240Z) led him briefly there was no repeat of last season’s shared honours as the super-neat Julian Barter (Lotus Elan) controlled ‘70s Road Sports again. Having debuted his new Lotus Europa with a third, Peter Shaw put Paul Tooms in on Sunday, where the result was the same. HSCC 70s Road Sports – July 2017
Then on the very last lap, Peter Bowyer in his MGB who was desperately trying to keep ahead of Richard Attwood made an epic late brake attempt at the bottom of the mountain and went straight onto the grass. I went round the mountain and Peter came back onto the track so an early afternoon grass cutting session up the mountain was required to miss him. Losing all traction meant Richard passed me going towards the hall bends. Great fun! I highly recommend Haribo to counter-act heat exhaustion! Second race was a race long battle with Neil Brown in his Eclat. Brilliant close racing and despite the screeching of my tyres behind him in the tight sections, he drove very well to keep me at bay. HUNTINGDONSHIRE REGIONAL COLLEGE – HISTORIC RACE TEAM
An excellent weekend at Cadwell Park saw the Huntingdonshire Regional College Historic Race Team return home delighted to have secured sixth and seventh places in the latest races on the HSCC 70s Road Sports Championship. Lewis Beales “Delighted with the weekend’s results and the progress we have made with the car” said Lotus Europa owner and racer driver Howard Payne, moments before the water pump sprung a leak.
Race two was held early on Sunday morning with Howard making a much improved start with second gear now obtainable in the ‘heat of battle’.
The students crewed race team was buoyed up after claiming sixth place at the previous round with Howard securing seventh place, after qualifying, on the starting grid for the opening event at the picturesque Lincolnshire circuit.
“I lost out to Mark Bennett’s much more powerful MGB V8 at the start and then followed him around for the entire race. Finishing seventh, at the tail of a group fighting for third place, wasn’t a bad result to end the weekend.”
Howard again struggled with getting the Lotus off the line at the start of race one, with a recalcitrant second gear, which lost him three places before the opening corner.
However the team’s buoyant mood quickly changed when a short time after the race the water pump sprung a leak.
Undeterred Howard set about improving his position and steadily worked his way up the race order to finish in sixth place, from a field of 27. HSCC 70s Road Sports – July 2017
“The sweet taste of success quickly followed by the bitter tang of disappointment is the norm when running a Lotus” said the pragmatic race team leader.
BrandsHatch SUNDAY 2ND JULY 2017
There are many challenges to be overcome when racing at Brands Hatch especially for anyone living north of the Thames. The paddock is generally a melee of trailers, trucks and tents, but once out on track a completely unique challenge presents itself, one where Legends are made...
HSCC 70s Road Sports – July 2017
The Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit is one of those special places an enigma in its own landscape, the centre is a woodland where you can wander peacefully surrounded by birdsong and dappled sunlight whilst the edges are bordered by the rear gardens of commuter houses. The track itself makes the most of the land contours it sits on, fast, challenging and extremely rewarding if you suspend your imagination, trust your instincts and let momentum flow. It’s a place where Legends wrote their stories, Pedro Rodriguez, Porsche 917K and the BOAC 1000kms held on the 12 April 1970 is one of those races written in large print on the first page of the Legends of Motorsport Bible, our own Richard Attwood was there on that soaking wet day when the stars shone so brightly under a dark, dank sky, finishing third after 6 and three quarter hours of racing in the Konstruktionen KG. Salzburg Porsche 917K he shared with Hans Herrmann. HSCC 70s Road Sports – July 2017
Nigel Mansell won his first Formula One race at Brands Hatch in October 1985 another racer not short of bravery and commitment. Will Leverett was enjoying the handling of his Europa around this fast undulating circuit, grabbing poll by 0.360sec from Charles Barter’s 240Z. Jim Dean slotted his Europa into 3rd but was perplexed to be 2 seconds slower than Will as he had built both Europas. With Richard Attwood away on Goodwood Festival duties Tom Bradshaw was dropped into the driving seat of the Anniversary Porsche 928, 28 years old, young, talented but very much part of the HSCC family, Tom hustled the big Porsche onto the outside of the second row. Mark Leverett, Mark Bennett and Steve Cooke all performed as expected and were followed by Dave Karaskas the latest owner of the ex. Totty TVR, although his efforts were slightly compromised by a wobbly steering column.
Fettling, fuelling and general socialising for Dave Karaskas: TVR, Chris Fisher: Arkley and Sarah Hutchison: Lancia Beta between qualifying and the race on a sunny afternoon in July.
Chris Fisher placed the little Arkley 9th on the 27 car grid ahead of all the larger engined Class D cars which included Julian Barter who bullied Peter Head’s troublesome MGB to 14th position.

As the rest of the field fell away from the leading group some great little mid grid battles developed, Chris Fisher hustled to the front of his group into 9th before letting the Arkley run with the wind and lowering the Class lap record by 2.4 sec which had been held by John Thomason since 2006. Brian Jarvis had a bit of a yo-yo race, distracted by the theoretically slower MGB of Julian filling his mirrors, his cause was not helped by Charlie Ugo spinning the Ferrari across his path out of Druids fortunately without either car sustaining any damage before the MGB finally cried enough and Brian was able to cruise to another Class victory in 11th place. An enjoyable race for most of the participants as they contemplated long drives home, simply pleased to be another paragraph in the history of this Legendary circuit.

‘BLOW IT OUT OF THE PARK’ DAVID TOMKINSON
I’d just like to say a massive thank you for all those that helped me manage three quarters of the race only to be scuppered by an earth connection!!!!
Right Chris Fisher. I’ve been looking back at the last 13 years of racing at Brands Hatch and pretty much every year its been sunny and dry so a good comparison for lap times. I believe you have by far the quickest lap time for any under 1500cc car.
The incredible TVR boys of Steve Bellerby and Andy who started helping on Saturday before they had even taken their own car off the trailer after a 6 hour drive. Ted who advised and did a lot of pointing and Iain Daniels who couldn’t understand the point of driving the car and kicked the tyres a few times. Alex Bage who just is always there to help and remind me I make twatty decisions. My father of course, to know that he had increased his chances substantially of a win and Will Leverett who took a 5 point turn to get out of the ‘Holding area’. It just reminds me why we race together in the HSCC 70s Road Sports Championship and the bond we all have to enjoy our sport, yet are human enough to remember it is all about the drinking and banter between those races!!

MIRROR, SIGNAL MANOEUVER BUMPER GRIDS One look at the Croft Road Sports Entry List suggests that the track is going to busy and whilst this is going to be tremendously entertaining for spectators we also want all 70s competitors to enjoy their racing. Qualifying is a time when things are particularly jumbled with both quick and slower cars in the mix and one way for competitors to limit drama is to plan ahead. In the Assembly Area take time to look around and identify the slower cars that might be in front of you or the quicker cars behind and by keeping an eye on your mirrors, looking out for the blue flags this will reduce the chances of surprises, working together in this way the order should quickly shuffle itself into one where everyone will have space and clear laps to search for their own limits. Drivers of slower cars do not need to change their line abruptly or slow suddenly when they see something quick approaching in their mirrors, simply by maintaining a consistent line the drivers of the quicker cars will pass with the minimum of fuss and maybe even a cheery wave. Although drivers of the quicker cars should not underestimate how hard a slower competitor is pushing the limits of his car, we want all 70s competitors to have fun racing.

VEHICLE CHECKS MOTs & VEHICLE IDENTITY FORMS (VIFs)
At Brands Hatch certain engine components were checked on the TVRs, plus operational headlights on Elans. Cars will also continue to be weighed regularly and these checks will continue throughout the remainder of the season. All documentation MOTs and HSCC Vehicle Identification Forms (VIFs) approved by the Registrar must be available when required at scrutineering and for post race checks.
MECHANICAL SYMPATHY LOOK & LEARN If your car develops a mechanical fault and you are unable to return to the pits safely, do not stop on the track. Use the cars momentum to try and find a safe place to park ideally next to a gap in the barriers where the car can be retrieved by marshals, this could make the difference between the session being red flagged or controlled under waved yellow flags. Top tip: On the winding down lap at the end of qualifying and the warming up lap of the race take time to identify the location of the marshal flag posts, this will make it easier to spot warning flags during the race or a safe place to park should you car develop a fault.
