Worth every frustrating minute as this meeting is now the HSCC event to do, fully in tune with historic motor sport with aerial displays & retro fashion. Charles Barter The Croft Nostalgia Weekend in early August brings the long haul north for those who live in the south and you just know the traffic on the M1, A1 and A1M will drive you to distraction. It’s often referred to as the Goodwood Revival of the north and there is always a special treat, this year a fly by for the fabulous Lancaster Bomber from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, one of only two Lancaster aircraft remaining in airworthy condition. Under new management the circuit made some major changes, separating competitors from the public at the entrances with the help of extra marshals, as well as new and bigger attractions – we are given to understand the event will be even bigger next year. One mustn’t forget the circuit itself, one of the most challenging on our calendar but also one of the most satisfying, especially when you able to put a perfect lap together. Road Sports were blessed with the garages this year, everybody just about fitted in from the huge combined grid.

With a grid of 40 cars, some concerns were expressed about racing against competitors we do not know. In future there will be separate Championship races whilst 70s and HRS are able to maintain sufficiently large grids. Both races were affected by safety car periods, unfortunately a great deal of time was wasted primarily due to no recovery vehicle that side of the circuit so competitors and spectators alike were deprived of some exciting racing – something that needs sorting for the future. Next stop on the Championship calendar is the Oulton Park Gold Cup another extremely popular meeting for 70s competitors and we will be holding our traditional 1970’s themed summer BBQ on the Saturday evening, following the Soap Box Races. We are really looking forward to seeing the wondrous Soap Box creations that the 70s competitors have been hatching in their sheds over the past months, further details are in the News section of this Newsletter.

Finally, don’t forget your Spa entry, this is The front runners in HRS are generally quicker proving to be a very popular event, to be than 70s cars, I was the leading 70s car, nearly guaranteed a place on the grid the HSCC four seconds off pole so it really shows how Office needs to receive your Entry Form by far HRS cars are developed these days. Chris Baxter & Chris Holland in the shared Lotus 7 had a good weekend also sharing 24th place in both races. Sarah Hutchison enjoyed some great racing finishing 3rd in Class on both days.

Chris Fisher & David Tomkinson had great expectations before the weekend, but both suffered with challenging mechanical woes in the races.

Despite missing the 2016 event Charles Barter’s Datsun 240Z was quickest of the 70s competitors in this combined Road Sports race ahead of Jim Dean who was unable to match his pace from the previous year.

Richard Attwood in the Classic Partner Centre Porsche 928 lined up 8th on the 70s grid. Despite a long and much travelled race career this was Richard’s first visit to the County Durham circuit.

Will Leverett had a good qualifying session in his Europa finishing ahead of Howard Payne’s similar car. Unfortunately Howard was forced to withdraw before the race action started after a serious mechanical fault was identified which was frustrating for the enthusiastic team from Huntingdonshire College.

Mark Oldfield was revelling in the handling and massively improved feel through the brake pedal of his Lancia Monte Carlo to lead Class D, fractionally ahead of Neil Brown’s Eclat and Steve Bellerby’s TVR 3000M.

David Tomkinson had a very encouraging qualifying session gaining a large chunk of Peter Shaw generously made his Lotus Europa time since 2016, whilst Chris Fisher, suffering available for Iain Daniels to share with Julian with brake and clutch issues qualified behind Barter this weekend. Although with Julian Nigel Ashley’s Lotus Europa and Chris Baxter in regulated to the back of the Sunday’s grid Peter the Lotus 7 he shares with Chris Holland. was probably relieved that he wouldn’t have Lawerence Alexander was pleased to be getting his mirrors filled with shimmering images of another race in his Invitation Alfa Romeo Alfetta his own dark blue Lotus. and Sarah Hutchison was happy to qualify 3rd Ian qualified a respectable 5th in 70s ahead of in Class D ahead of Simon Holmesmith’s Alfa Mark Leverett’s Elan and Steve Cooke’s Lotus 7. RACE ONE SATURDAY

RACE TWO SUNDAY

As the lights went out at the start of race one the grid launched itself towards the first corner in a burst of noise and adrenalin, swamping Iain Daniels who plummeted down the order having unfortunately selected 3rd gear instead of 1st.

With Julian Barter relegated to 37th on Sunday’s grid for not qualifying in session, he launched a fearless attack on the cars in front when the start lights went out, despite having not previously driven Peter Shaw’s Europa, gaining 23 places by the end of the first lap.

Will Leverett had already passed Jim Dean and was setting off after Charles Barter, Jim was further delayed running wide into Clervaux. Further back Neil Brown squeezed past Mark Oldfield to lead Class D and in the melee David Tomkinson was eased onto the grass.

Will Leverett simply resumed where he left off after the previous race nibbling at the back of the Datsun whilst Jim Dean sat in their wake. By the time the Safety Car was deployed again at the end of Lap 7, Julian had set the fastest 70s race lap of the weekend and wrestled the Europa onto the tail of Jim’s Lotus.

At the end of the first lap everyone in this rainbow peleton was settling into defending the places gained or attacking to regain positions lost. David Tomkinson having regained the Class lead from Chris Fisher suddenly found himself a passenger when the left rear half-shaft sheared as he turned into Sunny One leaving the Spitfire straddling the curb. Unable to find drive to drag the car to safety David performed a rapid evacuation and jogged to the relative protection of the cornfields.

Mark Leverett and Steve Cooke swapped finishing positions from Saturdays results and Neil Brown, shared honours with Mark Oldfield, each scooping a Class victory. Chris Fisher managed to drag the Arkley to a finish in this second race but unfortunately for David Tomkinson who had worked tirelessly overnight with his father to repair the Triumph their efforts were thwarted when the diff bearing collapsed on the out lap.

However he did provide a perfect example of With the Safety Car dispatched at the start of how to park a stricken race car in a safe position Lap 4 along with a recovery truck, the field, with to avoid delaying the race programme. the exception of Chris Fisher who retired the Sarah Hutchison said she had thoroughly Arkley on lap 5, fell into an orderly line to wait enjoyed some great on track battles throughout for the resumption of combat. the weekend to secure 3rd in Class on both days Released with just two race laps remaining Will ahead of class mates Chris Baines having Leverett relaunched his attack on the Datsun, claimed the 924 back from his brother ‘Jono’ searching for the smallest of opportunities, and Simon Holmesmith. squeezing down the inside line on the run to A SPECIAL AWARD SHOULD ALSO GO the Hairpin, in a last gasp effort on the final lap TO STEVE BELLERBY FOR SURVIVING ‘THE Will lost out by 0.103sec in the drag race to the LONGEST DAY’ ON HIS JOURNEY FROM line with Jim Dean just half a second behind. BBQ S £10pp at

Jim Dean, Anne Richardson & Alex Bage have volunteered to organize the 70s BBQ again at the Oulton Park Gold Cup, to be held in the paddock on Saturday evening in and around Jim’s gazebo after qualifying and the Soap Box Races. We would like all competitors, family and friends to dress appropriately in their coolest 70s attire. There will be traditional BBQ Fayre, we will be asking for a £10 contribution towards costs and any money left over will be put towards our next event, either at the Silverstone Finals or the Annual 70s Dinner to be held on Saturday 17 February 2018. Jim’s tea urn will be bubbling away for most of the weekend, but to accompany the BBQ please can everyone ‘bring a bottle’ or appropriate refreshment. Anne has also asked for Dessert donations, if you are able to help with something, fruity, chocolately, creamy, custardy, sticky and generally yummy please drop her a message on her Facebook page.

SOAP BOX DERBY SATURDAY 27 AUGUST We are anticipating that 70s competitors will have risen to the challenge and produced some wondrously creative solutions to race in the Soap Box Derby. The course and format will be agreed at the weekend and the Derby will be run after HSCC qualifying has been completed for the day.

YELLOW PERIL KNOWLEDGE IS POWER A number of drivers missed yellow flags over the Croft Weekend because they ‘didn’t see’ the marshals flag warnings. It is a responsibility of all competitors to be aware of the location of marshals posts, not only to observe flag signals but also to identify a safe place to pull of the circuit due to mechanical problems.

70S ANNUAL DINNER This could make the difference between a session being red flagged, neutralised behind SATURDAY 17 FEBRUARY 2018 a Safety Car or simply controlled under waved The 70s Annual Dinner will again be held at yellow flags. The Lambert Arms, Aston Rowant, Oxfordshire OX49 5SB, Take the time to identify the marshals posts on the first out-lap of practice, the cooling down lap of practice and the formation lap before the race starts. It takes less time than the ‘walk of shame’ to the Clerk of the Course’s office.

All previous dinners at the Lambert Arms have been very sociable and enjoyable evenings and the food is excellent: Save the date: Saturday 17 February 2018 Booking details will follow later in the year.

SPA RACE ENTRIES ENTER BEFORE 21AUGUST The HSCC is expecting a full grid for the Closed Wheel Races at Spa and any Road Sports entry received after the closing date may be added to the list of reserves. The Spa races are part of the 70s Road Sports Championship and competitors will be guaranteed a place on the grid, but the race Entry Form must be received by ‘The Office’ before Monday 21 August 2017 https://online.hscc.org.uk/signup If you are still looking for accommodation for the Spa weekend a number of 70s competitors have already reserved rooms at Hotel Beau Site, Hockai. Accommodation in the region will be booking up quickly but it is well worth trying. Book direct at: http://www.hotelbeausite.be/en/ HSCC 70s Road Sports – August 2017
