Lingfield Surrey - The British Wildlife Centre

Isle of Wight Wildheart Animal Sanctuary From pocket sized primates to powerful predators, the residents of Wildheart Animal Sanctuary, will charm and amaze you!

Wildheart Animal Sanctuary is based on Sandown Beach, Winner of BBC Countryfile Magazines 2019 Beach of the Year Award, which is on the east coast of the Island. The sanctuary is well known as a centre for rescued big cats, but more recently you will have seen the story of Benji and Balu former ‘restaurant bears’ relocated to the sanctuary from Azerbaijan.

A brand-new enclosure has been created for the bears that helps encourages their nature behaviours including a boulder mountain, ponds and a stream, a bear cave and house. You can also spy the bears on one of the seven cameras within and outside their enclosure by visiting the sanctuary’s website.

The British Wildlife Centre in Lingfield Surrey is home to one of the finest collections of native wildlife in Britain, with over 40 different species from tiny harvest mice to red deer, otters, owls, foxes and red squirrels. Inspired by pioneering conservationists, Sir Peter Scott, Gerald Durrell and John Aspinall, the centre opened its doors in 2000 with its key aim to educate visitors about British native species and the challenges they face today.

Hampshire - Marwell Zoo Marwell Zoo in Hampshire had a busy year with new animal arrivals in 2025 including the first ever potoroo joey, a crested wood partridge, a roul roul chick, a Okapi calf and twin baby cotton top tamarins born to mum Gurt and dad Mico. In March a female banteng calf, one of the rarest cattle species in the world was also born at the zoo, Other arrivals also include a binturong or bear cat from France, a female snow leopard from The Big Cat Sanctuary and male Amur tiger from Port Lympne Safari Park – head along in 2026 and say hello to these new arrivals and lets hope for another successful breeding year ahead.

If you haven’t been to Birdworld in Surrey for a while, its time to go back and swoop in and see what’s new. Last summer a fantastic new outdoor play area opened at the Uk’s largest bird park. The spectacular wooden ‘nestinspired’ play area offers towers, water play, connecting bridges, clamber nets and includes a magical ‘Spriglet Village’ with accessible pathways and interactive play for wheelchair users. In early 2026 a brand new indoor Play Barn will also be opening creating a warm and welcoming space where playtime never stops whatever the weather brings.

Enys Gardens Enys Gardens, located just a few miles east of Penryn, is a hidden gem believed to be the oldest garden in Cornwall. Doing exercise during the cold weather is really helpful for your body and mind. It’s easy to stay in the warm house while it’s frosty outdoors, but getting into a warm pool can be lovely, and exercise of any sort can help boost your immune system.

Wearing swimwear that is designed to keep the child warm can improve their swimming experience and make the initial transition from the changing rooms to the pool much easier.
