Getting there

There are plenty of walletfriendly family activities to enjoy, making it a great day trip or short break option. So, bring the family together to create magical memories. Firstly, how to save on your ferry? During every school holiday, kids go free* when you travel on foot with Wightlink. Tickets for under-fives are always complimentary but, during the holidays, two children aged 5-15 can also travel for free with every adult or senior.

With crossing times from just 22 minutes, you can easily make the most of everything the Island has to offer; crystal blue seas, rolling hills and fun family attractions giving unlimited smiles.

There’s something special about stepping on board a Wightlink ferry as it signals the start of your Isle of Wight adventure. It can be one of the most exciting parts of the trip for youngsters. On a pleasant day, you can head out to one of the sun decks and take in the fresh sea air (waving goodbye to people on the shore is a must!). Wightlink’s FastCat passenger service has a journey time of just 22 minutes – taking you to the end of Ryde Pier; a stunning way to arrive on the Island. The FastCat departs from inside Portsmouth Harbour railway station.

Portsmouth Gunwharf to Fishbourne

Wightlink’s vehicle ferry crossing takes around 45 minutes to reach Fishbourne – which is conveniently located on the doorstep of East and Central Wight.

Lymington to Yarmouth

Whether you are looking for theme parks, numerous farm attractions, zoos, aquariums and so much more - you’ll find something for everyone.

Even those attractions that aren’t necessarily ‘aimed’ at children, are still very good at keeping their smaller visitors happy and amused. They often go above and beyond to make sure that there’s something for them too, especially during the school holidays where you can find additional activities, workshops and interactive exhibtions across the county’s many museums and historic houses and castles.

Stuart Line Cruises run family and dog friendly cruises out of Exmouth Harbour with a choice of cruises along the Jurassic Coast and up the Exe Estuary. They run every day of the year (weather

Family friendly beaches

Having a British beach holiday is such a quintessential part of growing up and Devon’s safe and clean beaches is one of the reasons why it is such a popular destination for families. Devon is home to a host of Blue Flag beaches and many of them have won awards for being great places for kids to do what kids do - muck about and have fun! With long stretches of sand, sheltered clean waters, good facilities and often rock pools a-plenty, they’re a great place to spend a day.

Several of them are manned by lifeguards during the peak month too, so you can relax and just let them enjoy themselves. Paignton, Westward Ho!, Woolacombe and Dawlish Warren beaches are all popular beaches for families as they have lots of nearby facilities, including toilets and kiosks full of refreshments!

Dog-friendly beaches

One of the most frequently asked questions is whether dogs are allowed on beaches, the simple answer is yes - most of them! Places like Saunton Sands, Instow, Beesands Beach and Salcombe North Sands welcome dogs

all year around, while many of the others have restrictions at certain times of the year or areas that are dog friendly. Get active

One thing that sets Devon’s beaches apart from others is the array of water sports available at them. North Devon is part of the UK’s first ever surf reserve because it has the perfect conditions for surfing and other similar sports.

During the summer months, you’ll find plenty of organisations along the seafront offering everything from tuition to equipment hire, so whether you’re a seasoned pro or want to give yourself a fun new challenge, everyone can get involved! Croyde Bay in North Devon is one of the most used beaches by water sports enthusiasts, while Woolacombe is better for beginners as the surf is a little calmer. You don’t have to be in North Devon though, you can enjoy paddle boarding, kayaking and a host of others in the English Riviera, South Devon and East Devon too!

Whether you want to chill out on the sand, indulge in some water sports, explore the South West Coast Path or just discover some creatures in the rockpools, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Devon’s beaches.

Devon adventures

Did you know Devon is home to several theme and adventure parks offering a host of different rides? You’ll find some of the biggest rides in the south west in the county and all of them are great fun for the whole family, whether you’re travelling with little kids, big kids or even elderly kids! If you dare, take on water slides or race each other across the park, there are indoor play areas for if the weather turns and some parks even have a selection of animal residents that you can befriend while you’re there. Some of them even off the chance to do a spot of sheep or pig racing! Speaking of animals, Devon has a host of lovely animal attractions, from the large - such as the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, and Paignton Zoo - to the smaller options. Whichever one you choose; they are all great at educating and entertaining about native or exotic animals or marine life.

Devon’s history and heritage

Devon has a diverse history and plenty of heritage and one great way to explore this is by visiting a castle or stately home. National organisations like the National Trust and English Heritage manage a

variety of heritage attractions across the county and both offer lovely family friendly days out, with activities, trails and additional workshops, particularly during the school holidays. Many of them are also happy to welcome dogs , so the whole family can join in!

Get active in Devon

For some, there is nothing better than running around a park or garden and there are plenty around Devon for you to walk around, cycle through or play in dedicated play areas. There are often some amazing facilities right next door where you can pick up refreshments and they are a great option for the outdoorsy types that like to spend time in nature. It isn’t just the National Parks or landscaped gardens that make Devon a good family destination - the region isn’t known for being Mother Nature’s Playground for nothing! ON THE ENGLISH RIVIERA

The English Riviera, nestled along South Devon’s stunning coastline, is the perfect year-round location for families to explore. There’s so much to discover, with family-friendly visitor attractions, historic sites and natural wonders.

To make your stay super easy, you’ll find plenty of accommodation choices and places to eat, many of which are dog-friendly, across the three towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. And there’s plenty going on, with annual events including Brixham’s famous Pirate Festival, the English Riviera Airshow, and the festive Bay of Lights.

Start your journey at Babbacombe Model Village in Torquay. This whimsical miniature world has intricate scenes of British life, complete with tiny trains, houses, and even a firebreathing dragon! Babbacombe village also has a Victorian street at Bygones heritage family attraction, and a cliff railway down to the beach.

In the heart of Torquay, at Torquay Museum, kids will be fascinated by exhibits on ancient Egypt and the life of best-selling author Agatha Christie, who was born in the town. Don’t miss Kent’s Cavern, a prehistoric cave system that takes you back thousands of years. Tours reveal secrets of Stone Age hunters and showcase spectacular stalactites and stalagmites – an experience that will both educate and enchant explorers of all ages.

For dinosaur lovers, Dinosaur World in Torquay is an interactive experience where kids can dig for fossils, sit on a dinosaur, and even peek inside the jaws of a T. Rex. It’s a thrilling and educational stop for young palaeontologists.

Nearby Torre Abbey is a family favourite, combining history with beautiful outdoor spaces including the Agatha Christie-inspired Potent Plants Garden. Dating back to 1196, this ancient abbey brings history to life with interactive displays, dressing-up, and talking plates in the dining room!

For a hands-on experience, Occombe Farm is a must-visit with indoor and outdoor play, and cuddly animals to get close to. At Paignton Zoo, part of the Wild Planet Trust, budding zookeepers can try the Junior Keeper Experience.

At Brixham harbour, step aboard the Golden Hind Museum Ship, a full-sized replica of Sir Francis Drake’s iconic vessel. Kids can imagine life at sea, exploring the decks and experiencing the sights, sounds and smells of life aboard a Tudor ship. If history buffs are craving more, Brixham Museum showcases the area’s maritime history and its importance to fishing.

The naturally inspiring English Riviera is a UNESCO Global Geopark, with the famous South West Coast Path running through it. Find the perfect class for you…

Classes can vary, so take time to find a class that will give you the experiences that you want – whether this is just water familiarity or a more progressive approach; and whether the style of the class is relaxed and fun, or more formal and regimented.

Specialist baby and pre-school swimming classes follow a clear and progressive structure and will usually involve child-led submersions and surface swims for your little one.

However, the emphasis should be on parents/carers and their babies having fun, with no child being forced to do anything against their wishes.

The best swimming classes are full of carefully designed but simple activities, gentle submersions and are packed full of songs and rhymes.

How early can I take my baby swimming?

It’s never too early or late! Swimming classes offers your child a unique sensory experience and development of water confidence and lifesaving skills that last a lifetime.

Encouraging a baby to take regular exercise from such a young age is also an extremely healthy routine to instil which may prevent childhood lethargy.

Swimming as a baby should instil a love of water & swimming for the rest of your child’s life.

Swimming with your little one can seem daunting, even more so in the winter, but don’t be put off by the cold weather, we still love swimming in the winter, and we hope that you do too! It’s a great indoor winter activity, the pools are heated, it’s great for a child’s fitness and development.

Doing exercise during the cold weather is really helpful for your body and mind. It’s easy to stay in the warm house while it’s frosty outdoors, but getting into a warm pool can be lovely, and exercise of any sort can help boost your immune system.

Wearing swimwear that is designed to keep the child warm can improve their swimming experience and make the initial transition from the changing rooms to the pool much easier.

Day 1: A capital day out

The best starting point for any family trip is Cardiff itself - a vibrant young city with all the benefits of a capital city squeezed into a blissfully walkable centre.

Morning - Cardiff Castle and Principality Stadium

Let’s start in Cardiff Castle, whose high walls mark the northern boundary of the city centre. It’s 2000 years’ worth of history in one place: Roman garrison, Norman keep, and a richly decorated Victorian fantasy mansion. There are spacious lawns to run around on, too.

Afternoon - Shopping

It’s time for lunch, so head across the road from the castle, where the pedestrianised heart of Cardiff begins. It’s loaded with restaurants and bars, with big-name chains and a range of home-grown and awardwinning independent places to eat.

You’re also in the centre of the best shopping in western Britain - all set out in the compact centre. The city was always known for its Edwardian and Victorian arcades, which are still the best places to find one-off boutiques; yet, the £675m extension to the St David’s Dewi Sant Shopping

Centre with its flagship John Lewis holding centre stage with many other major brand stores nearby.

Day 2: A day in Cardiff Bay

Morning - Exploring Cardiff Bay has changed up considerably since its days as the (in)famous Tiger Bay - the world’s largest coal port which exported 10 million tons of anthracite a year.

Today there is a huge barrage across the rivers Taff and Ely, creating a 500-acre water park, fringed by ultra-modern marine developments. The best way to see it is on a boat trip around the bay. The barrage itself is a great place to walk (or hire a bicycle, or pedal car), with an outdoor gym and play area half-way along.

Afternoon - Science

Cardiff Bay has some of the city’s biggest family draws. Techniquest, a hands-on science discovery centre where fiddling with the 150+ exhibits is positively encouraged. The exhibits look like (and are, in a way) giant toys, but each one is also a potted lesson in physics. After that, head back to Mermaid Quay for a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants and bars.

Day 3: History and heritage

Morning - Living history

St Fagans has been rated one of Europe’s best open-air museums, and Wales’ most popular heritage attraction for a very good reason. Head west out of Cardiff and you’re in the Vale of Glamorgan, a county of gently rolling farmland, edged by one of the most interesting coastlines in Wales.

The Glamorgan Heritage Coast stretches 14 miles, marked by spectacular layered cliffs which drop down into occasional bays and coves. Dunraven Bay at Southerndown is one of the best, and the easiest to reach - it’s got a big car park, making it deservedly popular with families and surfers.

Heading north out of Cardiff, the South Wales Valleys have loads to do outside. Burn off some energy with a morning trying out the brilliant woodland trails at BikePark Wales. Afternoon - Brecon Mountain Railway

Take it easy and take in the mountain views by vintage steam train. Running alongside Pontsticill and Taf Fechan reservoirs before climbing to Torpantau, the Brecon Mountain Railway takes you right into the heart of the Brecon Beacons. There are loads of walks you can do around the reservoirs, plus you can visit the locomotive workshop and see what goes on there.

Morning - Abergavenny

Abergavenny is just a few miles from the coalfield’s northeast corner, but this is an utterly classic rural town, with a thriving market and a strong foodie tradition. The town is surrounded by seven hills: the Sugar Loaf is the most spectacular (and a great walk), while Skirrid is ideal with children – a bracing two-hour round-trip romp, with a ruined chapel at the summit.

Best things to do with tweens

Tweens will love the adventure of getting to and from 17th-century Elizabeth Castle, which is built on a tidal island – at least one leg of the journey will be a boat ride on the amphibious vehicle. Once there you can watch costumed characters firing muskets and the midday cannon and take a walk to the hermitage where Saint Clement lived on a rock. Or book a Seafaris expedition on a fast RIB, which will take you to explore the caves of the north coast or further to the offshore islands of the Ecrehous or the Minquiers. A great beach for this age group is St. Brelade’s Bay, which has that seaview Pizza Express, and also concessions that hire out kayaks and paddle boards and folk can whizz you around the bay on water skis or banana boats. Or try Portelet Bay, which also serves pizza on the beach and has an interesting little island that you can walk out to explore at low tide.

Teens will love activities such as coasteering, where you don a wetsuit and hard hat to scramble around the coastline, ducking into caves and jumping off high rocks into the sea. They can also find adrenaline in blokarting and kite surfing. For a different experience, they will enjoy exploring the War Tunnels, where the Second World War history of the island’s occupation by the Germans is brought vividly to life, or explore the Neolithic passage grave at La Hougue Bie. If you’re looking for an island getaway, but want the ease of being able to pack up the kids and the dog and all their paraphernalia in the car, then Jersey is the place for you. Accessible via Condor Ferries from Poole or Portsmouth, you don’t have to leave any treasured toy or furry friend behind and can bring the paddle board and wetsuits, too. Jersey is small but mighty. And possibly not what you expect. Yes, it can feel gloriously serene, with its laidback air, high quality of life and abundance of golden beaches. But there’s also an adventurous edge to the largest of the Channel Islands, making it the perfect destination for your clients.

For instance, did you know Jersey is home to Europe’s oldest surf club? That 12% of the island is encompassed within a national park? And that, during very low tides, its area almost doubles in size?

Jersey is a place of natural beauty, thrilling extremes and many surprises, where getting active is both exhilarating and easy to do.

On land

What could be more satisfying that walking around an entire island? Jersey measures just 8km long by 14.5km wide, and a 77km coast path encircles its shores, taking in every ancient granite cliff and powder-soft swathe of sand, every headland, castle, lighthouse and beach cafe. Excellent bus services make it easy to hike short sections; inland trails and quiet ‘green lanes’ make it possible to make loops.

signposted cycle trails, which range from family-friendly jaunts to foodie forays, where you can pick up cheese and cider en route. Or, for something more thigh-testing, try the hilly round-island ride. All these trails utilise some of Jersey’s 725km of country lanes, where traffic is light and pedalling is a pleasure. On sea

Whipped up by Atlantic swells and tempered by the gulf stream, Jersey boasts some of the British Isles’ best waves. The first surf school opened on the island back in 1914 and it’s still simple to sign up for lessons. Head for the wide, sandy sweep of St Ouen’s Bay, which offers both clean breaks for beginners and more gnarly waves for pros.

Or jump in a kayak to combine watery thrills with more in-depth exploration. Paddling around Jersey’s ever-changing

We arrived to the White Star Tavern in Southampton (whitestartavern.co.uk) after traveling down from Kent. A cosy little tavern with a lovely atmosphere, situated on a picturesque street. There are lots of tables and chairs outside where you can sit, take in the atmosphere, and enjoy the hustle and bustle of people going about there day.

It was easy to check in, and you could see right away how attentive the staff were. The Mermaid and the Haverfood Room, the two rooms we were allocated, were spotless, decorated with contemporary furnishings, and had great amenities.

There was no time for relaxation, thanks to Liz Blakeborough at Blakeborough Tavel & Leisure PR ( blakeboroughpr.com). Our goal was to spend a jam-packed weekend exploring Southampton and it’s rich history while also fitting in a little fun in between. After dropping our bags, we headed directly to Southampton’s top interactive location, the SeaCity Museum (seacitymuseum.co.uk), which is home to the city’s Titanic story.

We spent 90 minutes learning about the RMS Titanic’s history and the effects it had on Southampton’s residents and city. Including an interactive Titanic model, the passengers’ voice recordings from that fateful night, authentic artifacts from the renowned ship, and more. It was great for Jack and Daisy to experience and really understand the devastation of that night.

We went directly to the High Score Arcade for some fun after our extremely educational visit to the SeaCity Museum. The family-friendly entertainment venue in Southampton offers more than 60 games, ranging from arcade classics like Space Invaders to the newest titles.

In addition to being friendly, the staff provided challenges to defeat them in any game. You could come back for free if you beat them! We had a great hour of family fun, finished by the kids thrashing their dad at a couple games. We had a great appetite after all the walking and fun, so we went straight to the Pig in the Wall.

On Saturday, we awoke to again another beautiful day filled with activities and sights to visit. following a breakfast at the White Star Tavern that we can only describe as mouth wateringly excellent, we headed to God’s House Tower. The exhibition “Stories behind the Stones” is held in one of Southampton’s most significant and older historic medieval structures.

God’s House Tower as it’s known today was constructed over several hundred years and has held many different uses over that time. The oldest part of the building – originally known as God’s House Gate – was built in 1189 and named due to its proximity to the nearby God’s House Hospital. The original gate was built to give access to the Platform Quay and was used to guard the town from attack by sea.

First up is the birthday anniversary of perhaps the Victorian era’s most loved and celebrated author. On 7 February 1812 the literary world was changed forever when Charles Dickens was born in a humble terraced house in Portsmouth. That home is now a museum dedicated to the great man, displaying some of his prized possessions and being decorated in the Regency style that was very much in favour at the time.

Each year the Charles Dickens’ Birthplace Museum hosts a small ceremony and offers free entry all day to mark the occasion. It often features readings of Dickens classics and appearances from his descendants.

February also sees the return of Portsmouth BookFest, bringing with it talks, workshops and readings. The

In May it’s the turn of Portsmouth Comic Con at the Guildhall. The biggest familyfriendly Comic Con of its kind returns on 3 and 4 May with some of the biggest names in TV, film and pop culture entertainment. Families can meet stars of the silver screen or have items signed by the authors and illustrators behind their favourite Marvel/ DC superheroes. Plus, there’s always the opportunity to dress up, explore the interactive zones and shop for new treats at the many stalls.

At Portsmouth Historic Dockyard families can journey through 500 years of British Naval heritage. Some of the world’s most famous ships are on display, as well as the items telling the stories of those who lived and served on board.

HMS Victory is the oldest commissioned warship in the world and served as Admiral Nelson’s flagship during the Battle of Trafalgar. There’s also HMS Warriorthe ship that was so fast, so well defended and so heavily armed that it was said to have rendered all other warships obsolete on the day it launched. Plus, don’t forget the Mary Rose, flagship of Henry VIII which was rescued after 436 years on the sea bed in the largest marine salvage operation ever undertaken.

Head back down the high-speed lift and you’ll be in Gunwharf Quays - the waterfront outlet shopping centre with more than 90 stores, as well as 30 bars and restaurants. Whether it’s new shoes,

Eastbourne - Magnificent Motors

Eastbourne seafront will celebrate over a century of motoring next spring as Magnificent Motors gears up for a return from 3 – 4 May 2025. Classic cars and vintage vehicles throughout the ages will be on display on the Western Lawns and Wish Tower Slopes with thousands of visitors attending over the May bank holiday weekend.

The event regularly attracts more than 600 vehicles each year and expressions of interest are now open for car clubs to apply for their pitch, with individual entries open in January.

Established as one of the biggest motoring festivals on the south coast, each year Magnificent Motors hosts a unique selection of vehicles ranging from vintage heirlooms, classic coupés and revered retros to motorbikes, military vehicles, high

performance sports cars and the latest in EV technology.

With many star cars having an interesting back story – from film appearances to celebrity owners - many enthusiasts are often on hand to share their story, or to provide a peek under the bonnet.

Councillor Margaret Bannister, Eastbourne Borough Council’s Lead Member for Tourism, Leisure, Accessibility & Community Safety, said, “With Magnificent Motors we are sure to have a magnificent start to the events summer season. Each year we are over-subscribed so I would urge car clubs to apply as soon as possible with their star cars for the best chance of being accepted.

“Individual owners need not worry about missing out though, as we will be opening a separate allocation for them in January on a first-come first-served basis.”

Once accepted, entries cost £5 per car per day to support event running costs and all exhibitors receive a commemorative plaque. Club applications close on 1 December, with individual applications opening on 6 January.

Magnificent Motors is free to spectators and is open from 10am to 5pm each day. With funfair attractions for all the family throughout the weekend, visitors can also enjoy a range of retailers, food outlets and a bar too.
