Sevenoaks Swimmers ace National Arena League
After the huge success of ‘Run, walk or push against dementia’ over the past two years, it’s time to lace up those running shoes again when the popular charity event returns in May.
Sevenoaks District Council Chairman, Cllr Pat Bosley, joined Elaine Murray and Symone Salwan from the Sevenoaks Area Dementia Friendly Community Forum to launch the event at the Knole Forget-Me-Not Café in Sevenoaks on Friday 7th December, 2018.

All the money raised from the event will support local people living with dementia and their families. The £11,500 generated from previous events are currently funding the Knole Forget-Me-Not Café and well as Forget-Me-Not Cafes in Edenbridge and Westerham, the ForgetMe-Notes singing group and dementia friendly cinema screenings.
With five-hundred places available, the event makes its comeback on Sunday 12th May, 2019 and once again includes timed 3k, 5k and 10k courses suitable for parents with pushchairs through to seasoned runners.
Everyone who crosses the line will receive a commemorative medal and participants can take advantage of a range of other benefits to help them prepare for the big day.
Entry for the 3k and 5k runs is £13 for people aged over 16 and £5 for under 16’s. Both distances are suitable for beginners, children and people with pushchairs. Ages four and under go free.
Entry for the 10k run, suited to keen runners and those up for a challenge, is £18. This distance is not open to under 16’s or people with pushchairs.
Cllr Pat Bosley says: “We are very excited to be part this event again. Every pound raised from participants or pubic donations will fund important services for local people living with dementia, helping to improve their quality life. We know that dementia is one of the leading causes of death in the UK, but this event gives everyone the opportunity to not only improve their own health, but also raise money for people affected by the disease. ”
Elaine Murray, co-chair of the Sevenoaks Area Dementia Friendly Community Forum, adds: “Run, walk or push is our major fundraising event but it does so much more than that – it raises awareness of dementia in our area; enables individuals, families and groups to jointly exercise in beautiful surroundings and brings together many partners and volunteers from the community to ensure the event runs smoothly and brings joy. ”

Sevenoaks Swimmers ace National Arena League and National Winter Championships
SEVENOAKS CLUB PLACED 6TH
STONGEST TEAM IN THE SOUTH-EAST
FOR THE THIRD YEAR RUNNING
December was a gruelling month for the athletes and coaches of Sevenoaks Swimming Club, and one in which tested the swimmers character, ability and resolve against the nations best.
On Saturday 8th December the Club sent an A and a B Team to compete in the final round of the National Arena Swimming League, with the A Team travelling to Wycombe and the B to Maidstone.
The A Team had qualified for the South Premier Division final, competing against Thanet, Bromley, Wycombe District, Oxford City and Guildford City – the repeat of the final last year, whilst the B Team were competing in the “Middle” final of Division 1 East after having already secured their place in the division from stellar performances in the previous rounds.
The B team were depleted on the night due to a variety of illnesses and injuries, but their typically raucous team spirit propelled them into a strong 4th place finish behind winners
Maidstone, Black Lion and Thanet –beating Orpington Ojays and Erith & District.
The A Team fielded the youngest squad by quite a considerable margin in the final and battled to a hard fought 6th place in the league, one point behind Thanet Swim Club. This result placed Sevenoaks A as the 6th strongest team in the South of England and meant that, for the third year running, the A Team qualified for the National Arena League Cup Final in Cardiff.
This is astonishing achievement should not be underestimated, with the National Arena League themselves naming the South Premier Division being the strongest division in the entire country, as all 6 teams have now qualified for the National Final 2 years in a row.
The Club will compete in Cardiff March 2nd and will attend ranked in 15th place.
National Winter Championships
Next came the National Winter Championships 2018 in Sheffield, held between 14-16th December.
After watching GB star James Guy race, Louis Hayes qualifying in seven events, stepped up to the occasion and achieved personal bests in each of his five events he competed in.
Earning Club and Kent records alike as well as picking up his first ever national medal in the 100m Individual Medley as an U14 in the U15 Junior Category. Louis achieved his outstanding personal best times in the 50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, 100m Backstroke, 200m Individual Medley & 100m Individual Medley.
Teammate Aiden McMillan too ensured that his debut at this event would be worth the journey, storming home strongly in the gruelling 400m Individual Medley and smashing his personal best in the 200m Butterfly. Jake Hudson and Amelia Childs also qualified in breaststroke and backstroke events respectively but were unable to compete.
The remainder of the Club were in attendance that same weekend in Margate at the Thanet TYR Festive Meet, chasing vital Kent County Qualification Times. The Red Army were in full force and dished out PB after PB and Qualifying Time after Qualifying Time.
Swimmers and coaches hope to follow this rich vein of form into the Kent Weald County Qualifier Meet in early January before the long-course season kicks off with the Kent County Championships 2019 in mid-January.
A huge congratulations and respect goes to all swimmers, team managers, volunteers, parents & coaches who contribute into making all the hard work and success possible. On with 2019!
