GET UP! STAND UP! SHOW UP! NAIDOC Week is always celebrated with excitement at the College as students both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal look forward to this special event in our calendar. This year's theme of Get Up, Stand up and Show up resonates deeply with us at the College as it encourages all of us to champion institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative change while celebrating those who have already driven and led change in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities over generations.

At Sevenoaks, we acknowledge and understand that Elders, parents, families, and communities are the first educators of their children, and we recognise and value the cultures and strengths that Aboriginal children bring to the classroom.

Our College celebrated the event with our resident teacher, Kayleen Hayward, teaching Aboriginal history in the classroom, a Follow the Dream excursion to Yanchep National Park and an assembly presentation of dance, didge playing, a choir, Aboriginal foods and craft for all College students to participate in.

As we approach the end of term two, it is time to celebrate all of our achievements. This newsletter highlights how busy our students have been which means our staff have been doing everything they can to make sure each student succeeds.

We have worked through rather difficult circumstances with COVID although we have been lucky enough to be able to continue to have a teacher in front of every classroom. So far, we have had 157 students with COVID plus 135 who were deemed close contacts which also meant time away from school. In all, we have lost over 1,400 days of student attendance. Our staff have also been impacted with 33 COVID cases, about half of the staff. We have lost 151 days of teacher time. So, as we leave term two behind, we hope that we leave behind the peak of COVID.

I want to thank all families for your patience with our COVID rules. We have felt supported by you and you have helped us manage a very difficult period of time for the College. I hope that we will return to normal as soon as possible next term. I also wish you and your family good health in moving forward from COVID.

During term we celebrated Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC week celebrations. Of particular note was the theme of Be Brave. Make Change. for Reconciliation week. It is an excellent reminder that we can all do something to make a difference in our local communities to support Reconciliation with our First Australians.

At Sevenoaks we are proud to have three very important programs which support our Aboriginal students: Follow the Dream, Clontarf Football Academy and Deadly Sistas. All of these programs highlight our Aboriginal students and their successes with their schooling. We are proud of these programs and hope that they continue to support future students to achieve their goals.

We also celebrated Wellbeing week. Students engaged with much enthusiasm ensuring all of the activities were a success. Our student services team worked hard to provide this great opportunity for our students to engage in healthy activities.

Our sports teams have been out and about. The boys soccer team are having some terrific wins and the year 11 girls volleyball team won their division at a recent carnival. The Clontarf boys are not only playing football but also playing basketball against local schools. Our netball girls and basketball boys had a great day at each of their carnivals, participating with great sportsmanship and representing our College with pride. Well done to all of our teams and their coaches.

Many of our students have also had the opportunity to visit Universities, training organisations and businesses. This awareness raising has been a great benefit to students in supporting them to find their future. Several students have taken the opportunities presented to them and have secured training places in their future pathway. These are great outcomes for our students.

RECONCILIATION WEEK BE BRAVE. MAKE CHANGE.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The theme of Be Brave. Make Change. is a challenge to all students and staff to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for all. At Sevenoaks we celebrated and encouraged this theme in the classroom through informative lessons for all students with Aboriginal teacher, Kayleen Hayward.

WELLBEING WEEK

Personal wellbeing is described as a complex combination of factors such as physical, mental, emotional and social health. Well-being is closely related to happiness, success, and life satisfaction. In short, Wellbeing can be described as how you feel about yourself and your life.

At Sevenoaks Senior College we recognise the importance of our students wellbeing by providing general support for our students with a variety of needs, including: mental health, social and emotional health, personal development, attendance, school belonging, and engagement.

Sevenoaks Senior College work closely with our teachers, student services team, support staff, and psychologists to ensure a comprehensive approach and high standard of support is always provided.

In Week 8 of term 2, Sevenoaks Senior college held the annual Wellbeing Week which included multiple activities that introduced and reinforced the need for: physical fitness, nutrition, personal pampering, holistic selfcare, and open mindedness to cultural and lifestyle diversity among our community. We had a large number of local community service organisations join us in celebrating Wellbeing Week, exposing our students to many services and products that are available with activities and free gifts to assist them in maintaining a well-balanced existence.

Our Principal, Dr Karen Read, opened this event which was enjoyed by all. Thanks to every single person who contributed and helped out, our 2022 Wellbeing Week was a smashing success.

SPORT NEWS

BOYS SOCCER

Sevenoaks Senior College have been competing in the South West Regional Pennant Cup throughout term 2. This competition involves a series of matches between the schools, which are run after hours as an extracurricular activity. The Sevenoaks team consists of 16 students from year 11 and 12. This year we faced Halls Head College, Comet Bay College and Willetton Senior High School. Our boys finished the term top of their group with 6-3, 7-0 and 6-2 wins. We are set to participate in the knockout matches and finals next term against Mazenod College and Shenton College. Good luck boys!

VOLLEYBALL CARNIVAL

A massive day of competition at Warwick Stadium this year for the volleyball inter-school carnival. Sevenoaks entered two teams of girls and boys. It was non-stop all day and we were kept very busy with most teams playing five games plus officiating other games in between. All of our teams played extremely well, with students giving their all. The Year 11 and 12 boys were up against very strong opposition but due to a lot of training before, during and after school, they came away with two hard fought victories and both placed 3rd in their pools. The Year 12 girls also had a lot of very competitive matches and one fantastic win. Our Year 11 girls had a memorable day, taking advice onboard and playing to their strengths. The team finished the day as champions of their pool!

Congratulations to everyone involved and thank you to all of the students helpers.

BADMINTON CARNIVAL

This term we competed at the annual inter-school senior school badminton tournament held at Kingsway Stadium. Sevenoaks fielded a team of 4 talented girl's pairs. Upon arrival, it was clear that the skill level of the opposition was very high with many schools now running badminton programs. But this did not worry our girls! Each pair played some fantastic matches with a lot of great points played.

All the pairs had at least one win, with Sheka Mou and Praewa Promson progressing all the way to the quarter finals. Our students all displayed fantastic sportsmanship and also officiated many games throughout the day.

NETBALL CARNIVAL

Our girls' netball team had a fantastic time competing in the interschool carnival at Matthews Netball Centre this term. Special mentions go to Mikaylah and B who were stand outs on the day and really showcased their experience, talent and passion for the sport.

Huge thanks to Ms McLeay and Ms Davey for coaching and to Ainslie for cheering us on all day from the sideline.

TAFE PROFILE CERTIFICATE STUDENT SPOTLIGHT CHARLOTTE, YEAR 12 - RETAIL COSMETICS Certificate you are undertaking and where you are doing it: I am undertaking a SHB20116 Certificate II in Retail Cosmetics. This Certificate lets me gain the skills and knowledge behind makeup, brow tinting and waxing, eyelash tinting, and nail art. This provides the perfect starting point in your career as a beautician/beauty therapist or anything to do with that industry. I am attending South Metropolitan TAFE in Murdoch every Friday. click here Dream job/job you are working towards and how this course will help: I would eventually like to own my own business but at this point I'm more focusing on achieving my goal to become a beauty therapist. This Certificate is helping me learn the basics behind the beauty industry.

In the first term we did makeup. We learnt which products were best for different skin types/conditions, how to correctly apply the product and where to apply it, as well as the different types of makeup. We did day looks (natural) and night looks (glam) and we learnt the skin care behind performing a makeup look after taking it off to ensure your skin stays healthy. It was great to learn the proper way to perform a makeup look.

If beauty is something you want to do/your career goal, go for it. I highly recommend this course to get you a head start in your career and a boost in your skills and knowledge.

TAFE P R OFILE STUD ENT

In the second term we did lash and brow tinting and brow waxing. It was great to practice on different eyebrow shapes, different colours and customer service. Learning to talk to the client while performing a service is so important because it gives you the knowledge of what they want. In brow waxing, we learnt about hot and strip wax and the differences between them and how they affect the waxing in different ways.

In the third term we will be doing nail art and if you want to become a nail technician, this is perfect as it gets you started with the idea and experience of how to perform on nails and the practice of client's preferences of what they want on their nails as you will need to make sure you can cater their needs. This Certificate can also be perfect for obtaining a job in Mecca Maxima, Priceline, Essential Beauty and more.

What you're loving about this course: The thing I love about this course is all the knowledge I am learning; about the content I love doing. Wanting to become a beauty therapist and gaining the skills and knowledge is excellent in achieving my goal and getting a head start in my career. I also love being able to improve my communication and customer service skills while performing a service and recommending products and services as this is a skill needed in the beauty industry. I love the variety of things we get to indulge is this Certificate and the alternatives of doing things in case one thing doesn't quite work. I love being able to get an idea of what 'outside of school life' is about while entering adulthood and of course, the friends you make, makes the course even better.

FOLLOW THE DREAM NEWS Kaya and welcome to our news segment as part of the Sevenoaks Newsletter. We returned to term 2 with lifted restrictions, and students were happy to be back as we set in place our theme of “building our future through community, opportunity and excellence” Our partners were welcomed back into the College and over the term, highlights of our program included:

CAREER WORKSHOPS WITH MURDOCH UNIVERSITY We partnered with Murdoch University this term for the following in school workshops: Breaking Barriers- a critical thinking workshop, breaking down stereotypes associated with Aboriginality and university, and provide students with opportunities to challenge stereotypes.

Rise Up- a leadership workshop, sharing stories of our history and providing students with opportunities to reflect on their own impact in their school, family and broader community.

Think Big- an aspiration building workshop developed to give students an opportunity to reflect on their own journey and imagine the positive impact they can have on their own lives, their families and even the community.

Thank you to Murdoch University Kulbardi Team for bringing these workshops into our College.

CURTIN UNIVERSITY EXCURSION FTD students were hosted by the Centre for Aboriginal studies and the Curtin Ahead program on a Curtin University excursion this term.

Elders and staff from the CAS spoke to the students and encouraged them to further their studies as university is not out of their reach. The Curtin Ahead team took students on a tour of the Campus and various departments explaining courses, requirements, campus life and provided students with a sumptuous lunch.

Thank you, Curtin. Students had a great day and three of our students have already indicated that they will be enrolling in 2023.

YANCHEP NATIONAL PARK EXCURSION - NAIDOC

Sevenoaks Senior College is proud to be the host school for Follow the Dream. We outreach to 5 other schools: Canning Vale College, Yule Brook College, Cannington Community College, Harrisdale Senior High and Thornlie Senior High. A joint excursion was held at Yanchep National park with 36 Follow the Dream students. Students had an enriching day with a Crystal Caves Tour, an inspiring workshop with Derek Nannup and a Tree Top Adventure. It was an amazing opportunity for students to meet other FTD students from different schools.

Congratulations to our FTD students who spent many hours practicing for the NAIDOC celebrations! Your speeches, dances and didge presentations were inspirational and captivated the wide audience. You also shared the powerful NAIDOC message which inspired many people. We are so proud of you!

LANGFORD ABORIGINAL ASSOCIATION (LAA) SESSIONS A huge thank you to LAA for their continued support of our program and providing opportunities for our students. This term, LAA ran an awesome Mother's Day activity and facilitated a visit from Headspace.

CLONTARF ACADEMY NEWS The term 2 focus for the academy was interacting with our partners to generate some thought within the group as to possible careers and employment opportunities.

EMPLOYMENT FORUM

The foundations marquee employment event provided a great opportunity for all our boys to interact with over 24 partners to get an idea of opportunities that exist for them post Yr 12.

WORKSITE VISITS Centurion (Airport location) - The boys had a good look around the four massive warehouses (all the size of Optus Stadium), guided by a former Clontarf student who has been at the company for 12 months.

The boys learned about plenty of opportunities in areas such as warehousing and transport.

Newtown Toyota - We were shown around the new premises in Welshpool, now the biggest parts warehouse in Australia. Toyota provides great opportunities for apprenticeships, and currently have 16 active apprentices at the Welshpool premises.

Watercorp - The academy visited the Kelmscott depot and out to Canning Dam. Our tour was insightful and provided a great overview of a multitude of options available for the boys post school i.e. traineeships and apprenticeships.

ACADEMY VISITS TO SSC Coates - A visit from a representative from Coates provided great discussion during advocacy of the what, where, and how of Coates.

There are plenty of opportunities for the boys with this company and we will be following up with a worksite visit in week 6 next term.

Notre Dame University - We were lucky enough to have a presentation from Notre Dame University on study pathways post Yr 12 this term. Our boys will get to further investigate their options during their upcomng Open Day.

BIG PICTURE ACADEMY NEWS BENTLEY TAFE EXCURSION Students from the Big Picture Academy interested in a career in Hospitality attended a behind the scenes tour at the award winning training restaurant at Piney Lakes. Head of Programs, Robert Taylor, was kind enough to show us around the professional training restaurant and kitchens, the Bakery, Patisserie and the new barista training café. He explained that hospitality is a great career for those wanting to travel the world and spoke of the international nature of the staff who work with him at Bentley.

Interested students can access qualifications from an entry level Certificate II up to an Advanced Diploma. Training is relevant, current and hard work, but the trade off when qualified make it all worth it.

The food the students prepared looked and smelled fantastic. We even saw sugar and chocolate sculptures, similar to those you see on Masterchef.

The second half of our campus tour was in the Vet area where we were shown around Total Vet Care, the Bentley Veterinary Hospital.

Students can complete a Certificate II Animal Studies and Certificate III Companion Animal Services qualification. We saw the general surgery area, the theatre and X-ray rooms, and the hydrotherapy suite. It was great to find out that anyone can access the services here.

OPTUS STADIUM TOUR

This term, some of the Academy's staff and students got the opportunity to tour Optus Stadium with tour guide Rocco.

The tour began with an Acknowledgement of Country by Kayleen before Rocco shared the history of the Burswood site that the stadium stands on. Walking through the facilities, we were able to view the oval from many vantage points at different levels, including the coaches boxes, media room and even the Optus Corporate box.

Rocco was able to guide us through the various rooms that the players access and describe their typical game day preparation. The ice baths and spa for after game recovery were impressive and a little tempting.

Max and Traayne tried to inspire our “team” with a pep talk and then followed up with a post-game summary to the media.

After a quick lunch, look at the Matagarup Bridge, and visit to the Nicky Winmar statue, we were on the bus back to the college via Mineral Resources Park. We were very lucky that the weather held out and feedback from students was that the experience was very interesting and informative.

WA WILDLIFE EXCURSION

This term, Sevenoaks Big Picture Academy students visited WA Wildlife, formally known as Native Arc, in Bibra Lake. This is a developing native animal rescue and rehabilitation centre and animal hospital. Funded by Cockburn Council, the facility is still in development and offers access to veterinary services for wounded creatures seven days a week. Our visit was aimed at discovering how this community project operates and how interested students might volunteer their services in the name of wildlife conservation.

During the tour we saw recuperating pelicans and owls and a wedge tail eagle in intensive care. Students also met Vinnie the 27kg wombat, who had been left injured at the side of the road after being struck by a car. Students were also allowed in the pen with Bindi and Banjo, two super friendly dingoes on loan from New South Wales as part of a potential new breeding opportunity.

We were shown around the whole hospital from the operating theatre and triage area through to the recovery pens, eating preparation area and laundry. We were very privileged to see behind the scenes of this new facility and meet the volunteers and vets who work there. The care that was shown towards our native animals was very moving and we were all a little shocked by the stories of cruelty that the volunteers shared. It is very fortunate that WA Wildlife exists as they can send out their ambulance to pick up wounded animals or accept animals dropped off by the public 365 days a year. The hospital welcomes everyone through their doors and we would definitely recommend a visit!

MURDOCH TAFE EXCURSION Big Picture Academy students were given the opportunity to attend an excursion to the hair and beauty student clinic at Murdoch TAFE this term. In addition to learning all about the courses on offer, our students received a range of treatments including hair wash, blow dry, style and curl and a manicure with polish.

BRING YOUR DOG TO WORK DAY Students and staff were treated to a visit from a fury friend towards the end of this term. Bailey, a Maltese cross Lhasa Apso, was welcomed into the classroom for 'bring your dog to work day'.

Spencer (pictured right with Bailey) is working on a special interest project focussing on dog training. He has aspirations to work with guide dogs or become a dog trainer. Spencer spent the morning teaching Bailey to roll over as well as other basic moves to enable Bailey to become a care dog. Students spent time watching Bailey's behaviours and learning what they mean. Overall, the students felt calm in his presence and all enjoyed being around him. We hope Bailey will be able to join us again next term.

FUTURE ENDEAVOURS SCHOLARSHIP - Emad (pictured above left) - To support him with his education and future career aspirations in the field of spatial science and surveying. This scholarship will contribute towards Emad's personal development at school and beyond.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT SCHOLARSHIP - Jacob (pictured above right) - To support him in continuing his excellent work with regards to electronic 'E' waste. This scholarship will contribute towards Jacob's future goal in obtaining the necessary equipment to continue his repairs whilst reducing his carbon footprint.

We look forward to welcoming Tracy Lyon to the College early next term where she will meet with the boys to discuss their award and Wayne's legacy.

IN THE CLASSROOM NEED TO STUDY SMARTER? Why not put aside your notes and try and show your understanding differently. Try drawing a diagram of how a concept works and then explaining it to a friend! Only relying on our notes can sometimes trick us into thinking we can recall something when we really don’t know it well enough to recall it for a test or exam.

In our Opt-in, Pop-in program, the college learning coach visited three maths classes and shared current research on how to get the best out of study time with the students. Ms Burrell’s maths classes participated in trying a few different ways to study.

By putting class notes away, then getting your brain to recall the required information, you are testing yourself.

These strategies are based on research which shows studying is more than re-reading your notes. You must do something with them for them to attach to your long-term memory so they can be recalled in an exam situation.

HOSPITALITY - COFFEE CART Our hospitality students, led by Mr Armstrong, have been keeping our staff and students caffeinated this term thanks to our brand new coffee cart initiative! We have been privileged to enjoy free barista coffee during lunch on Mondays and recess on Thursdays as well as College events. Thanks legends!

ART - ALTOID TIN ART & ATWELL YOUTH AWARDS Year 12 Art students have been focussing on landscapes and environments this term. As part of this project, they were asked to create a piece of art which incorporated an Altoid tin. Students searched the internet for ‘Altoid tin art’ as a starting point then let their imagination run wild. We are so impressed with the creativity and variety of these tins. Well done students!

Year 12 Art student, Harlene, produced this incredible artwork (pictured right) for this year's Atwell Youth Awards, an exhibition for young artists of high school age. This year, the theme was "Life in the Ocean" and students were encouraged to attempt an artwork to suit the message "Save Our Oceans". Congratulations Harelene, we're so proud of you!

SCIENCE - DISSECTION, INFLUENCING MOOD AND ZOO EXCURSION

Another action packed term in the Science department! Human Biology students got stuck into cow eye dissections, psychology students participated in an experiment to determine if food can influence mood, and integrated science students went on a full day adventure to Perth Zoo!

our Student Guild to collect coupons from the West Australian newspaper to enter into the STEM Classroom Cash competition. Sevenoaks was awarded the prize for 'most coupons per student (based on school size)' and won $1250!

This money will be used towards STEM related resources to be enjoyed by the whole school. Well done everyone!

Do you know anyone interested in enrolling at Sevenoaks for 2023? Let them know about our upcoming College Open Day! This is a great opportunity to take a tour around the College with information provided about our programs and our College ethos and environment. Students will join a group guided by a teacher and current students to explore what we have to offer. Students who currently attend Yule Brook College or Cannington Community College can register their interest for this event through their Year Coordinator. If they do not attend one of the above mentioned schools and are thinking about enrolling at Sevenoaks for 2023, there is an expression of interest form linked on our College website.
