PROGRAM NOTES Esprit de Corps is a tribute to the United States Marine Band and the Marine Corps in general. Full of energy and drama, the composition displays the fervor and virtuosity of the Marine Band and the musical spirit and integrity of their past conductor, Col. John R. Bourgeois.

Peace Dancer was inspired by a book by the same name by Roy Henry Vickers. In the words of the author: “The story Peace Dancer is about a song and dance that is thousands of years old originating from the time of the flood. Songs have been composed for different Chiefs up and down the Pacific Northwest coast. The Chief who is chosen to do this sacred dance is recognized as a healer in each community and the songs and dances are a reminder of the great flood and how the people lost their way and their love for all things in creation. During the dance there is a time when the dancer shakes eagles down from their headdress to remind people of the flood.” The composer chose to focus on one sentiment from the book: “We have really lost our way; we have not taught out children love and respect”. Once you realize the consequence of your actions, remorse and the understanding that there is a need to move forward with humility and grace follows. Thus, is the lesson of Peace Dancer.

BOOM! represents a different kind of fanfare – one that moves through sound concepts, changing meters, and syncopated rhythms. The title references the sudden loud bass drum hits in several parts of the piece.

Nimbus 2000 is Harry Potter's personal broomstick. To musically depict this ingenious mode of transportation John Williams selected the woodwind section, all of which are capable of extraordinary leaps and astonishing agility.

Into the Blue pays homage to the uniquely American style of Jazz. For example, the main, recurring melody outlines all of the notes found in a blues scale, and a majority of the melodies and harmonic progressions are based on the blues scale. The composition even references jazz inspired compositions and employs swung melodies, drum set fills, big bandesque shout choruses, and many other jazz-originated orchestrations and techniques.

For the Fallen, the final movement of the composer’s Symphony No. I, uses well-known hymn tunes – Nearer My God to Thee, and Our Father in the Kingdom of Heaven, to acknowledge that the unfortunate fact of war is that we always lose many of our brave service members. The piece is meant to depict the movement from this world to the next. We choose to dedicate it to those who have lost their lives to the Covid-19 pandemic.

SENIOR RECOGNITION Emma Barrett will double major in Political Science and Environmental Studies in the Presidential Scholars Program at FSU. She hopes to continue playing trumpet in the Marching Chiefs.

Lizzy Barrett will attend St. Petersburg College to complete her AA, and later transfer to USF to work towards a master’s degree. She will major in Communication Sciences and Disorders and plans to become a Speech Pathologist.

Steven Alvarez Castrillon will attend USF to pursue degrees in Music Education and Piano Pedagogy. Clearly a brilliant young man.

Jonathan Gutmann will attend the University of Florida, with a major in Computer Engineering and a minor in Music and Business. He plans to participate in the Gator Marching Band and the Jazz and Concert Ensembles.

Rachel Held will be attending the University of Florida to study Music Performance. She loves all types of orchestral works and hopes to play professionally.

Madison Kempton will attend the University of Florida to major in Health Sciences and minor in Music Performance.

SENIOR RECOGNITION Maureen O’Shea will attend the University of South Florida, march in the Herd of Thunder, and major in Music Education.

Clearly a brilliant young woman.

Heather Perez will attend the University of Central Florida and majoring in Biochemistry. She hopes to continue music with a minor in music.

Aditya Ramesh will attend the University of Florida and major in Physics

Megan Rio will study Music Performance with a focus in percussion at UCF with a minor in literature. Her goal is to perform in ensembles of many kinds all over the country.

Benson Thacher will attend the University of Central Florida where he will double major in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering and minor in Computer Science. He will play clarinet in the university’s concert ensembles, alto sax in the Marching Knights, and tenor sax for the Jammin’ Knights.

Timothy Tice will attend the University of South Florida to study Music Education. Another brilliant young man.
