Barcelona IX SOUTHERN EUROPEAN VETERINARY CONFERENCE 50 CONGRESO NACIONAL AVEPA

Barcelona’s location on the Mediterranean coast assures a warm, welcoming climate with pleasant temperatures all year round. The city boasts more than 5 kilometres of beaches, an Olympic marina, open-air restaurants, famous stores for shopping, and many street cafes. Absorb Barcelona’s wonderful history and bohemian atmosphere. Walk through the Gothic Quarter, one of the world’s best-preserved medieval areas, and the Ribera and Raval districts. The bustling streets and neighbourhoods can be easily explored by bus, by bicycle or on foot. Of course, if Barcelona is famous for any one thing, it is its buildings. Take the time to admire the city’s architectural masterpieces such as the Sagrada Familia and La Pedrera, created by Antoni Gaudí and other architects, and soak up Modernisme, the city’s home-grown Art Nouveau movement and all that Barcelona has to offer.

EdUCATION Veterinary education in the 21st century – transition to new ways of learning currently, how can we manage the ever growing information that is constantly entering the veterinary profession? This situation, now universal in society for well over a decade, urges us to establish a different framework from which to learn and use knowledge. In effect, we must adapt, and adopt, new ways of learning, locating information, and in particular in the veterinary field, in how we observe the world and solve problems. In this session we will explore how both veterinary programs in europe and USA are evolving, and how they are changing the profile of veterinarians emerging from such programs, as well as address teaching /learning methodologies for continuing professional education, and the resulting challenges for member of the profession. Gastrointestinal and urinary suturing techniques

Wound management techniques in small animals

Learn when and why it’s best to apply radiography or ultrasonography in this practical course. Let’s review the pros and cons of both techniques and learn how to put them to good use!

Learn to produce minimal tissue trauma for a better healing and how to avoid postoperative incision leak in your gastrointestinal and urinary surgeries.

Participants in this hands-on lab will learn current and cutting edge wound management options that are much more effective than the traditional wet-to-dry or dry dressing.

In this hands-on session, delegates will learn how to correctly perform basic abdominal surgical procedures (i.e. enterotomy, enterectomy, gastrotomy, gastrectomy and cystotomy), and how to check if the tissue apposition is adequate in order to prevent the risk of postoperative leakage. Various suture patterns will be presented and practiced on gastrointestinal and bladder segments. Participants will learn all the relevant suture patterns from the basic simple interrupted and simple continuous pattern, to the more advanced patterns such as cushing, Lembert or Mattress patterns, and practice different knotting techniques. Where and when the different types of sutures are used will also be discussed. This is an interactive, hands-on session focused on basic surgery and it is intended for veterinary surgeons with minimal experience in this field. DATe: 15/10/2015

Moist wound management, the standard of care in human and now veterinary medicine, will be discussed and participants will learn how to select and apply moisture retentive dressings such as calcium alginate, polyurethane foam, hydrocolloid, and hydrogel to a variety of wound types. They will also gain experience with a number of useful tools and techniques for wound management, including properly pressurized lavage, skin stretchers and stents, ring retractors, active closed suction drains, wound diffusion catheters, honey, negative pressure wound therapy, and maggot therapy. Lab activities will alternate between group discussions and rotating around a series of stations where participants engage in hands-on activities using medical equipment and models (this lab does not employ live animals or cadavers). Participants will also be presented with clinical case examples on which they can practice decision-making regarding wound care strategies. By the end of this lab, participants will have expanded their ability to manage challenging wounds and design effective wound care plans that are tailor-made for each individual patient.

After a brief introduction on the pros and cons of these 2 widely available modalities, the participants will review in groups of 2 or 3, clinical cases that will assist them to better understand the advantages and limitations of these modalities. After an initial review, each case will be reviewed with the assistance of the instructors.

BEHAVIOUR

ORTHOPAEdICS Ultrasonography for orthopaedic surgeons

Learn how to deal with aggression in cats and dogs! Participants will practice how to apply behaviour modification techniques and will acquire the skills needed to develop a complete behaviour treatment for dogs and cats.

Practice your skills in orthopaedic ultrasonography! This practical course will enable attendants to assess musculoskeletal pathologies by means of ultrasound imaging, focusing specially on tendinopathies.

In this course, attendants will become familiar with the main procedures and equipment used to develop a comprehensive aggressive behaviour treatment protocol. After an explanation of the main procedures and specific techniques, they will be able to practice with live dogs and also discuss feline aggression cases with video examples. Altogether, participants will learn how to implement a practical approach to identify stress and fear, how to improve treatment adherence and compliance and the skills needed to develop a complete behaviour treatment for dogs and cats.

This workshop will start with an initial lecture of the basic and key points to bear in mind when performing a diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, after which participants will break into groups to apply the newly learned techniques on live dogs. The goal is to familiarize the attendants with the most relevant aspects of musculoskeletal ultrasound and to acquire the skills needed to deal with tendinopathies.
