Granada is the capital city of the province of the same name, located in southeastern Spain between the shores of the Mediterranean and the Andalusian hinterland. The city is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, the highest mountain range of the Iberian peninsula. With more than a thousand years of recorded history, Granada was an important Spanish cultural and architectural heritage.

The Alhambra, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is indisputably the city’s most wellknown monument as well as one of the most visited in Spain. It has a defensive area, the Alcazaba, the Nasrid Palaces (named after the Dynasty of the Kingdom of Granada) and the Generalife Gardens. Granada boasts a Renaissance cathedral, dating from the 16th century, and many other architectural monuments, including the Royal Chapel, the Monastery of la Cartuja, the Monastery of Saint Jerome and the Science Park Museum.

However, if there’s one thing that makes visitors fall in love with the city, it’s the narrow streets and cul-de-sacs. It’s a pity to return home without having explored Granada.

Southern European Veterinary Conference 20-22 October 2016 Palacio de Congresos de Granada, Spain AVEPA (Spanish Association for Small Animal Veterinarians), in collaboration with the NAVC (North American Veterinary Community), will again host the Southern European Veterinarian Conference - SEVC. And for the first time the conference will take place in Granada, Spain on 20 to 22 October.

an outstanding continuing education opportunity for veterinarians all over the world. Again this year, more than 200 lectures by more than 100 worldwide experts will cover every aspect of companion animal veterinary care from diagnosis to therapy, including specific topics such as anaesthesia, behaviour, dentistry, dermatology, practice management, emergency/critical care, orthopaedics, pain management, small animal medicine and feline medicine.

The SEVC’s mission is to present the veterinary community with the latest advances in animal care in a professional, but fun, environment. This year’s social events will include the not-to-be-missed Grand Fiesta.

Spanish and English are the SEVC’s official languages and simultaneous translation will be provided at all lectures. At some lectures, simultaneous translation into French, Russian, Portuguese and Polish will also be provided.

General Conference Information Congratulations! If you have received this Final Programme, it is because you are attending the “SEVC Granada 2016”. All the information relative to the Scientific Programme and the Exhibition Hall is in this booklet, which has been designed to provide delegates with an overview of each day’s programme.

Be sure to refer to the updated version and not earlier versions sent by mail or downloaded from the SEVC website.

SEVC Secretariat – Check in area The SEVC Secretariat – Check in area desks are located in the Palace entrance. Please collect your badge and documentation there. At the desks, you may ask any questions about the conference or register on-site for the Scientific Programme, the International Nursing Programme, Workshops and social events.

For your convenience, the desks will be open: Thursday, 20 October: 07.30 - 19.30 Friday, 21 October: 07.30 - 19.30 Saturday, 22 October: 08.00 - 20.00 Your Badge All Badges must be collected by the registered person at the SEVC Secretariat during the conference opening hours.

Proof of identity will be required (e.g. passport).

Please take care of your registration badge and its holder. There are several types of badges providing access to different areas of the conference.

Security personnel have been instructed to refuse admission to anyone not wearing an official SEVC name badge. In case of loss or damage, printing a new Badge for any reason incurs a charge of 100€.

The Badge identifies the person who holds it. It cannot be collected or worn by anyone other than the person registered

and named on the badge. The conference organisation can cancel the registration and prohibit entry to the registered person for failing to comply with this rule.

SEVC Conference Bags Your conference bag will be given to you at the SEVC Secretariat at your arrival. Each bag contains the expo book, the 2017 Conference First Announcement, and other exhibitor information.

Simultaneous Translation Earphones All rooms offer simultaneous translation into English and Spanish, as well as Polish and Russian within the Small Animal Medicine room. You can collect your earphones at the designated tables on level -2. It is compulsory to leave a Passport or €300 in cash as a deposit. No credit cards, hotel room cards or presentation cards will be accepted. Please return the earphones at the end of each day to allow the batteries to be recharged.

Conference rooms All rooms will be open for 5 minutes between lectures. All rooms will then be closed for privacy. A staff member will check delegates’ badges when they go in or out of the room.

Rooms will be locked during coffee and lunch breaks. All delegates will be asked to leave the rooms at this time. Food and beverages are not allowed in any of the conference rooms. The SEVC does not permit the recording of any lecture.

He graduated from the Utrecht Univ.

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Holland in 1988 and finished and internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Georgia in the United States of America in 1989. After his internship, he completed his residency training in small animal surgery and a Masters degree at Kansas State University, USA. The residency was followed by a fellowship in surgical oncology at the Colorado State Univ. Comparative Oncology Unit, USA. In 1993, Returned to Europe to accept a position in surgical oncology and soft tissue surgery at Utrecht Univ. In February of 2005, he was appointed Professor in Surgery at the Univ. of Copenhagen and in August 2008 Professor in Soft Tissue Surgery at Utrecht Univ. Jolle is Diplomate of the American and European College of Veterinary Surgeons. In 2012, received the title Founding Fellow in Surgical Oncology of the ACVS. Additionally, Jolle holds the office of the Past President of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association. His main clinical and research interests are surgical oncology, endoscopic and reconstructive surgery. Jolle has published over 90 peer reviewed articles, given more than 200 lectures worldwide and has received the prestigious BSAVA Simon Award in 2007 and Hills Voorjaarsdagen Excellence in Healthcare Award in 2009.

Advanced Ophthalmology Seminar Saturday, 22 October 2016 Room: Picasso (level -2) 8.30-12.55 Ron Ofri was a member of the charter class of the Koret School of Veterinary Medicine, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. Upon his graduation in 1989 he travelled to the University of Florida, where he spent the next 4 years undergoing Ron Ofri clinical training in veterinary ophthalmology and obtaining his Ph.D. During this time Ron developed an interest in the physiology of vision, focusing on retinal electrophysiology and changes in visual function resulting from glaucoma.

Upon his graduation Ron returned to Israel and joined the faculty of his alma mater, where he is currently an Associate Professor in veterinary ophthalmology and winner of numerous Teacher of the Year awards. At the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Ron expanded his research interests to include comparative visual physiology in wildlife species, and to date has published more than 60 refereed papers. Ron is also a very popular international speaker, having been invited to talk in more than 20 countries, in continuing education seminars, national meetings and world congresses for general practitioners, including BSAVA, WSAVA and NAVC. He also lectures frequently in advanced training courses for veterinary ophthalmologists, including lectureship at the Basic Science Course of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (where he has been speaking since 2002) and numerous other forums. Ron is a contributing author to the Gelatt’s classic textbook Veterinary Ophthalmology (3rd, 4th and 5th editions) as well as a co-author of the popular textbook Slatter’s Fundamentals of Veterinary Ophthalmology (4th and 5th editions). Ron is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ECVO), a former ECVO Executive Board member and in 2002-2005 he served as President of the European Society of Veterinary Ophthalmology.

Learn how to obtain high quality images to make accurate ultrasound diagnoses. In this hands-on lab with live dogs, participants will practise locating abdominal organs with the guidance of experts.

This practical class with live dogs will teach participants basic abdominal ultrasonographic skills and ultrasound anatomy, with guidance and feedback from experts. Participants will work in groups of four and rotate through different stations where instructors will teach imaging of the major abdominal organs. Surgery Gastrointestinal and urinary suturing techniques

Learn how to obtain a clinical synergic benefit by using CT an US in a particular clinical case.

Learn to produce minimal tissue trauma for a better healing and how to avoid postoperative incision leak in your gastrointestinal and urinary surgeries.

Computed Tomography (CT) and ultrasound images (also video clips) on selected clinical cases will be reviewed. Interpretation principle and complementarity of these two techniques will be enhanced during the reviews organised in small groups. In this engaging workshop using both CT and US to resolve specific clinical situations, two participants per computer station will discuss the diagnostic features provided by both of these techniques. A succinct clinical history is provided along with the initial study (CT or US) performed. The limitations of the initial diagnostic imaging step are discussed and necessary additional studies are then shared with the audience. Identification of all pertinent findings, listing of differential diagnoses, and conclusions along with case management recommendation(s) will be presented in an organised manner to build sound interpretation skills and better awareness of these imaging modalities.

In this hands-on session, delegates will learn how to correctly perform basic abdominal surgical procedures (i.e. enterotomy, enterectomy, gastrotomy, gastrectomy and cystotomy), and how to check if the tissue apposition is adequate in order to prevent the risk of postoperative leakage. Various suture patterns will be presented and practiced on gastrointestinal and bladder segments.

Participants will learn all the relevant suture patterns from the basic simple interrupted and simple continuous pattern, to the more advanced patterns such as Cushing, Lembert or Mattress patterns, and practice different knotting techniques. Where and when the different types of sutures are used will also be discussed. This is an interactive, hands-on session focused on basic surgery and it is intended for veterinary surgeons with minimal experience in this field.

Wound management techniques in small animals

Feline extractions

Address that wound! Learn the most appropriate techniques to use in different cases of open wounds through this workshop, aimed to teach participants the latest technologies and the best way to approach wound management.

A cat is not a small dog. Extraction standards are similar to small dog breeds but, due to specific feline pathologies and anatomical differences, techniques of extraction in cats should be treated separately. Extractions of maxillary and mandibular quadrant of dentition, extractions of canine teeth, premolars and molars will be presented and performed. A final presentation about how to deal with the most common complications will be performed.

Advanced behaviour modification techniques in the treatment of aggressive dogs

Participants in this hands-on lab will learn current and cutting edge wound management options that are much more effective than the traditional wet-to-dry or dry dressing. Moist wound management, the standard of care in human and now veterinary medicine, will be discussed and participants will learn how to select and apply moisture retentive dressings such as calcium alginate, polyurethane foam, hydrocolloid, and hydrogel to a variety of wound types. They will also gain experience with a number of useful tools and techniques for wound management, including properly pressurised lavage, skin stretchers and stents, ring retractors, active closed suction drains, wound diffusion catheters, honey, negative pressure wound therapy, and maggot therapy. Lab activities will alternate between group discussions and rotating around a series of stations where participants engage in hands-on activities using medical equipment and models (this lab does not employ live animals or cadavers). Participants will also be presented with clinical case examples on which they can practice decision-making regarding wound care strategies. By the end of this lab, participants will have expanded their ability to manage challenging wounds and design effective wound care plans that are tailor-made for each individual patient.

Ultrasonography is a very common and non-invasive imaging method to check internal viscera. It is very useful in reptiles and does not require sedation or anaesthesia in most cases. Working in small groups with live animals, attendees will learn how to perform ultrasonographic examinations, which are the best approaches to the coelomic cavity in the different species, lizards, snakes and chelonians, and how to identify all the structures.

World premiere: AVEPA and IAVANTE bring laparoscopic surgery of the future to veterinary surgeons. Be one of the few privileged people to experience robotized surgery in Veterinary practice.

Have you heard about the Da Vinci system in laparoscopy? Can you imagine performing a laparoscopy in 3D vision? Have you ever wondered what veterinary laparoscopic surgery will be like in the twenty-second century? These are questions you’ll be able to answer if you assist this workshop. Da Vinci surgery uses a robotized system for laparoscopic surgery with an amplified, high definition 3D vision and articulated arms connected to the surgeon’s hands, which provide higher precision, visibility, versatility and efficacy in the surgeon’s surgical procedure. This method, which is still in initial phases of implantation in routine human laparoscopic surgery, can be within reach, as a futuristic experience, for inquiring veterinary minds interested in enjoying the robotized surgical experience despite being aware of the fact that its clinical application will not be possible in the medium-term. This workshop, aimed towards veterinarians with experience in laparoscopic surgery, will consist of four blocks through which participants will rotate. A first block of robotic Da Vinci surgery, a second block of 3D vision laparoscopy, a third block of single port laparoscopy and, finally, a fourth block of advanced practice in abdominal laparoscopy. Laparoscopic practices will be performed on biomodels, phantoms and on live animal (pig). The aim of this workshop is for participants to improve their laparoscopic abilities for their daily clinical practice, but also to come into contact with laparoscopic techniques of the future.

A walk around the Alhambra, declared a World Heritage Site

by UNESCO, is a required activity for every visitor to the city of Granada. Furthermore, the Alhambra is a work of art that calls out to us, maybe because of its attractive and elaborate rooms, its monumental and historic position and the special charm of its exquisitely detailed Islamic art and architecture.

What we propose is to transform this visit into an extraordinary experience rich in knowledge. With our guided tour of the Alhambra, you’ll have at your disposal one of our official tourist guides, an expert interpreter of Granada’s heritage, who will guide you through every part of the “red fortress”, and will also answer any queries that you may have about this spectacular monument.

After the visit we recommend a walk down to the Realejo neighbourhood. This is a busy neighbourhood, and its streets are vibrant with a distinctive character. You can reach the Realejo from the Alhambra by walking through winding streets. Between the Carmenes and whitewashed houses there are many bars and taverns serving Granada’s typical tapas.

The price includes: bus to and from the Granada Congress Centre, access to the Alhambra for one and a half hours with a specialised guide.

A shuttle service is available from the Palacio de Congresos to the Hotel Nevada Palace at 21.00. The return shuttle service runs from 23.30 every 30 minutes.
