Student Speaker Award Mr. Ely Martinez Class of 2021

Ely Martinez is graduating from the Barnett College of Ministry & Theology with a bachelor’s degree in Intercultural Studies. Throughout his time at Southeastern, Ely was an active member of the School of Honors in addition to being on the Dean’s list. He was also a part of the Florida Intercollegiate Wind Ensemble and SEU’s Wind Ensemble and Brass Quintet.

Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award Professor Sheary Fredere

Professor Sheary Fredere has dedicated her life to teaching mathematics. She has served Southeastern University for 32 years and will retire in June of 2021.

Professor Fredere has left an indelible mark on the SEU community with her Christ-like spirit and genuine, caring attitude.

Excellence in Advising Award

This summer, Ely plans to intern with Oasis Center in Madrid, Spain, where he will volunteer at their refugee center aiding North East African and Middle Eastern migrants seeking health care, education and language skills. His dream is to one day work with the immigrant community in the United States and Central America.

She earned both a B.A. and an M.A. in Math Education at the University of South Florida. Before coming to Southeastern, she served as an adjunct professor at Polk Community College and compiled 11 years of teaching experience at the high school level.

He dedicated his time to volunteering with S.W.A.G., an oncampus ministry that partners with the local Dream Center in ministering to children living in poverty. In addition, Ely served in the SEU Missions Department as a student leader.

He attended mission trips that traveled to various parts of Latin America, addressing physical and spiritual needs within numerous communities. Most recently, he led a trip over spring break to the border of Arizona and Utah where he had the opportunity to witness to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Professor Fredere joined the faculty of Southeastern in 1989 as an assistant professor of math and education and was promoted to associate professor in 2008. She has served as chair of the Department of Mathematics since 2014. Over the years, she has rewritten numerous courses to meet the changing needs of the student body.

She has worked closely with the College of Unrestricted Education and Classical Conversations in developing courses and in mentoring faculty. Additionally, she has spearheaded changes to the delivery method of developmental math, positively impacting student performance.

Dr. William C. Hackett, Jr. Provost and Professor of Practical Ministry

Dr. William C. Hackett, Jr., has diligently served Southeastern for 33 years. In addition to fulfilling his role as provost, Dr. Hackett teaches for the Barnett College of Ministry & Theology as a professor of practical ministry.

At the end of the 2020-21 academic year, Dr. Hackett will officially retire from his position as provost and transition to the role of provost emeritus. He will continue to be an active and influential member of the Southeastern community by providing guidance in crucial meetings for the university’s leadership.

Dr. Hackett also plans to increase his presence and time within the classroom, instructing more Bible and practical ministry courses.

Throughout his time at Southeastern, Dr. Hackett has devoted his efforts to students, staff and faculty alike.

Working in various departments across campus, such as administration and student development, Dr. Hackett has been the vice president of academic affairs and even a resident director. As a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award, Dr. Hackett has made it clear that he values the importance of personal connections between him and his students.

Serving with excellence in every role he has been given, Dr. Hackett has significantly contributed to the university’s growth and success over the years.

Dr. Hackett often speaks in Southeastern’s chapel services, in churches and in district schools of ministry across the country. He has also served in roles as senior pastor, associate pastor and youth pastor for multiple churches.

Dr. Hackett lives in Lakeland with his wife, Judy.

In Recognition

Dr. Larry E. Hazelbaker Professor of Psychology In appreciation of his dedication and service to the university, Southeastern would like to honor Dr. Larry E. Hazelbaker upon his retirement.

Dr. Hazelbaker has committed over 35 years to serving Southeastern. He is currently a professor of psychology for the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences and the director for the Center for Pastoral Training and Care. He is also an alumni, graduating in 1976 with his bachelor’s degree in History and Bible. In his time at the university, he has held positions as vice president, dean, chair and has directed several other programs.

This commencement program includes the names of those students who have applied for graduation and were cleared to participate in the commencement ceremonies. The actual awarding of the diplomas is contingent upon successful completion of every aspect of the student’s degree program.
