Lydia Pogu Class of 2022

Lydia Pogu has been featured in national headlines over the past several years. In 2014, Pogu was among more than 200 female students who were kidnapped by Boko Haram in Chibok, Nigeria. Prominent figures around the world, including Michelle Obama, demanded action to bring back the girls and used the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls to create awareness. Pogu was able to escape early on and received an opportunity to continue to pursue her education in the United States. While living in the U.S., Pogu has shared her story with national news outlets and advocacy groups.

Since enrolling at SEU in 2017, Pogu has earned her bachelor’s degree in legal studies with a minor in political science. She will be graduating with a master’s in human services administration.

Upon graduation, Pogu plans to work for a nonprofit organization while she prepares for the LSAT (Law School Admission Test). She has aspirations of becoming a human rights and international lawyer.

Commencement Speaker Kristen K. Waggoner

Kristen Waggoner serves as General Counsel with Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF). Her role includes oversight of the U.S. Legal Division and Communications, which includes over 100 attorneys and staff who engage in litigation, public advocacy, and legislative support.

ADF is the largest legal organization committed to protecting free speech, religious freedom, parental rights, 6

and the sanctity of life. Since Waggoner began serving in this role, ADF has represented prevailing parties in 11 U.S. Supreme Court victories, including Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission and Uzuegbunam v. Preczewski, which she argued at the Supreme Court. She also served as counsel in the free speech victory the Supreme Court handed down in National Institute of Family and Life Advocates v. Becerra.

Waggoner is a frequent legal commentator in television, radio, and print media. She is admitted to practice in multiple states, the Supreme Court, and numerous federal district and appellate courts.

President’s Award

Senator Kelli Stargel Senator Kelli Stargel was elected to the Florida Senate in November of 2012 after serving four years in the Florida House of Representatives. She currently works as the investment property manager for her familyowned business in Lakeland.

Senator Stargel serves as the Chair of the Appropriations Committee and is the Alternating Chair of the Joint Legislative Budget Commission.

She also serves on the Banking and Insurance Committee, the Governmental Oversight and Accountability Committee, and the Rules Committee.

Senator Stargel has received numerous awards from various organizations during her time in the Legislature. She has had the distinct honor of being awarded Legislator of the Year by The Florida Farm Bureau two years in a row. Senator Stargel has also been singled out as a Florida Champion by The Associated Industries of Florida, Florida Realtors,

The Florida Chamber, Florida Fruit & Vegetables, The Landscape Association, and The Foundation for Florida’s Future, among others. In addition, she is the recipient of the Florida Family Policy Council’s William Wilberforce Award.

She and her husband of 37 years, Circuit Judge John Stargel, have five children and seven grandchildren.

The Link program at Southeastern is designed to assist students with mild intellectual disabilities in making the transition from high school to adulthood. It is one of only a few faith-based postsecondary transition programs in the United States. Over a twoyear period on Southeastern’s campus, students receive a certificate of accomplishment and an industry credential related to their vocational goals.
