FROM OUR PRESIDENT One of our organizational strategies at SEU is our Innovative Framework, which requires us to seek new sigmoid curves of growth. We have learned that the key to staying ahead of the curve is to innovate and adapt when everything is going extremely well. As our university has reached new heights with our growing enrollment and programs, we have looked for ways to provide an education that meets the needs of our community and our world.

In the past few years, God has given us a vision to start a preschool and K–12 school in Polk County. Through the diligence of our team, who put together proposals and met with Florida legislators, we are thrilled to announce that this dream is coming to fruition. In the summer of 2023, SEU was granted $4 million in appropriated funds from the Florida Legislature to use for a project that would include both a private Christian preschool as well as a K–12 school.

These funds will allow us to begin the first phase of building and launching the preschool. This school will be rooted in Classical Christian education, meeting a growing need for schools that are centered on biblical truth. Our hope is that this project will greatly benefit the Polk County community and offer hands-on experience for SEU students.

SEU MINISTRY NETWORK The rapid growth of SEU is a direct reflection of our efforts to reinvent education and make a college degree affordable and accessible for all students. To meet the changing landscape of higher education, SEU opened its first extension site in 2012. The partner-site model, known as the SEU Ministry Network, was designed to provide students with a high-quality learning experience at an affordable price.

Since then, we have launched more than 200 sites in 44 states with an enrollment of 2,227 students. Students in these programs not only have the benefit of earning degrees from an accredited institution at a discounted cost — they study where they live and work.

As SEU prepares the next generation of educators, our goal is to develop teachers who are grounded in traditional American, Judeo-Christian values. SEU is intentionally equipping students with a firm biblical foundation that will guide them as they teach in any domestic or international school system. As role models for developing students, teachers are responsible for more than academic enrichment — they affect every aspect of students’ lives.

SEU LINK As one of a few faith-based post-secondary transition programs in the U.S., SEU Link is designed to assist students with mild intellectual disabilities in making the transition from high school to adulthood. The program’s goal is to provide students with the tools necessary for them to take college classes, obtain gainful employment, and live independently. Upon graduation, students receive a Link Certificate of Professional Readiness. The program offers concentrations in Childcare/Education, Business/Retail, Hospitality, Fitness, and Art/Design.

Link students participate in at least three semester-long job experiences. Students take two courses each semester that are Link specific and teach skills such as employability, independent living, and self-advocacy. They also take two traditional undergraduate courses every semester in content areas related to their career goals.

The students can live on campus or in a house on the edge of campus. Trained peer mentors help Link students become involved in social activities such as athletics, chapel services, clubs, and events.

Since its inception in 2017, 13 students have completed the program, one has transitioned to undergraduate admission at SEU, and 89% of graduates are employed.

For the 2023–24 academic year, 10 students are enrolled and 30 peer mentors serve in the program.

NEW ROLES ON CAMPUS In 2023, SEU welcomed a new vice president, campus pastor, chief nursing administrator, chief advancement officer, and distinguished professors.

Vice President for SEU Ministry Network Steve Saccone was named the vice president of the SEU Ministry Network in the fall of 2023. Saccone has served as a regional site executive at SEU since 2017, where he successfully collaborated with extension sites and regional campuses to facilitate strategic planning, execute marketing strategies, and develop transformational practicum programs. In his new role, Saccone oversees church network advancement, church extension site enrollment, and the leadership of SEU’s church extension site and network personnel.

Chief Advancement Officer Julie Paul was announced as the chief advancement officer in the spring of 2023.

Prior to this role, Paul served in the Office of the Provost overseeing special projects. Paul has a background in business entrepreneurship, public relations, and graphic and interior design. She also has executive-level expertise in project and school development, implementation, and institutional advancement. As the chief advancement officer, Paul is working on sharing the SEU story with the community and growing the university’s endowment and operational support.

Campus Pastor SEU welcomed a new campus pastor, Jonathan Rivera, in the fall of 2023. Rivera has been serving as the Next Gen Director of the Florida Multicultural District of the Assemblies of God. Prior to SEU, he also worked as the junior high pastor, the lead youth pastor, and the creative pastor at Calvario Church in Orlando, Florida.

Chief Nursing Administrator Dr. Mark Reinhardt was appointed the chief nursing administrator in March of 2023. Reinhardt maintains the oversight of disciplinary partnerships, initiatives, and projects, as well as the prioritization of excellence in nursing program design across all deliveries at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Reinhardt is working on launching two programs within the College of Natural & Health Sciences — a Doctor of Nursing Practice, and a dual Master of Science in Nursing and a Master of Business Administration degree. Prior to coming to SEU, Reinhardt served as a professor and associate dean of Valdosta State University’s School of Nursing in Georgia.

DISTINGUISHED PROFESSORS Dr. Elaine Thompson Dr. Elaine Thompson joined SEU in the fall of 2023 as a distinguished professor of professional practice. Thompson spent 10 years as the president and CEO of Lakeland Regional Health. More recently, she served as the CEO of the YMCA of West Central Florida. Thompson is working on the creation and instruction of courses relating to bias and worldview, leadership development of SEU staff and faculty, and community education.

“My continuing studies in Global Ministry Design at SEU helped prepare me to lead and pastor the people of Atlanta with excellence, all while having a missional mindset in a city that desperately needs Jesus!”

Mayo Sowell Mayo Sowell’s story is one of triumphant redemption — from time in prison to planting a church in Atlanta. Sowell is enrolled in the Doctor of Missiology program. Before becoming a pastor, Sowell played professional football for the Buffalo

Bills in the NFL. After sustaining an injury, Sowell was cut from the team. He encountered struggles and spent time in prison for selling narcotics.

It was during his incarceration that he gave his life to Christ. From there, Sowell went into full-time ministry, serving as a pastor at Church of the Highlands in Birmingham, Alabama, for nine years. At Church of the Highlands, Sowell and his wife, Kai, felt God call them to plant a church in Atlanta. While enrolled at SEU, in September of 2022, the Sowells planted a church in Atlanta, Georgia, called LIIV Atlanta. At their first service, LIIV had over 1,000 people in attendance. LIIV has the vision to see the city of Atlanta live and flourish according to the ministry and message of Christ. The church has also partnered with SEU to launch an extension site to train ministry students.

Abigail Baker Seeing her father make an impact on the lives of others as a pediatric oncologist, Abigail Baker has always known that she wanted to follow in his footsteps. Baker is a junior at SEU pursuing a bachelor’s degree in biology with a concentration in medical sciences and a minor in chemistry. In November of 2022, Baker was one of 50 students nationwide (undergraduate and medical school) accepted for the St. Jude Pediatric Oncology Education program. During the 11-week research internship, she was mentored by a pediatric neurooncologist in the global department. Her research ignited her passion for global missions and medicine. More recently, she shadowed a pediatric oncologist for two weeks at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in South Africa, which is the third-largest hospital in the world. As a student, Baker is a part of SEU Missions, the American Chemistry Society, and the Student Christian Medical & Dental Association. With a heart for serving others, Baker participated in a mission trip to Uganda in 2022, where she worked with Watoto Church and served in an orphanage and schools. During the summer of 2024, she will co-lead a mission trip back to the same place.
