PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE To The Graduates Dear Graduates, Congratulations on making it to this milestone! It has been my honor to be your president these past years, and I am so proud of all of your incredible accomplishments. This day marks such a momentous occasion. We know it has taken a tremendous amount of hard work, a lot of late nights and many unexpected challenges, including the ones these recent weeks have brought.

Many of you may already be preparing yourselves for the uncertainty of what life holds after graduation. I want you to know that God goes before you. Deuteronomy 31:8 reminds us, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Some of you may know exactly what you will do. Others of you may be uncertain of what exactly it is you want to do. You may be wondering, “Just what is it that God has in store for me?

What is my purpose in this world?” These questions are perfectly normal, especially at this time in your life.

But scripture reminds us, it is not what we choose that gives us purpose. John 15:16 says, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.” What gives us purpose is knowing that He has chosen us.

No matter what your own dreams may be, no matter what your biggest passion is, your greatest purpose in life is to reflect the love and glory of God. When you make this your greatest passion and your life’s greatest joy, God will go before you.

We must remember, in these moments and in all of life’s moments moving forward, ultimately God has chosen us. His love, sacrifice and desire for us is the greatest gift we have been given. He chose to breathe life into us and chose to create us in His image. These truths should not only encourage us to dream bigger, but to reach further than we could have imagined. This should put a fire in us to do everything for the glory of God. Class of 2020, my prayer for you is that you will step out in the boldness and confidence of Jesus Christ in all that you set out to do.

CHANCELLOR’S MESSAGE To The Graduates Dear Class of 2020,

It’s the manifestation of a servant heart, the same heart of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He said in Matthew 20:28, “The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve and to give his life…” To understand the heart of God is to commit to your generation that you will strive to see this world as Jesus did, as “harassed and helpless, [like] sheep without a shepherd.”

It is then that all you have gained at SEU will be put to the test, to take on the challenge to meet needs and heal hurts in your world.

Class of 2020, you have an exciting hope and future, not just because you are getting your degrees and diplomas today, but because God has ordained it for you. My prayer is that you will make your mark on this world by your successes in the workforce, by your successes of filling needs and healing hurts and by your commitment to dream God-sized dreams and take God-sized risks. And when you do this, as your Chancellor and one who has seen a few commencements in my life, I can say with confidence, the future is in good hands.

When you boil it all down, that is what most gets the attention of people today. The entire world is crying out for those who will dedicate their lives to filling needs and healing hurts. It’s that simple. No matter the occupation you choose, in whatever field of choice, if you want to be valuable, to always be in demand, to always be wanted and needed, then find needs and fill them, find hurts and heal them. If you want the security of career and success, then find needs and fill them, find hurts and heal them.

I have always said that if you have a dream that you can accomplish on your own, it’s not big enough. If you never risk beyond what you can accomplish on your own, it’s not big enough. When you have God-sized dreams and take on God-sized risks, it demands that God shows up, and when God shows up good things happen. That’s the way it has worked for me and that’s the way it will work for you. One of my favorite verses in all of the Bible is Jeremiah 29:11, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.’”

Congratulations! It is my distinct honor to address you as you move past this great milestone into the realization of God’s potential for your lives.

As you conclude your education at Southeastern, I would love to leave you with just a couple of pieces of advice. In my over 67 years of ministry, I have been often asked, “Pastor, if there was just one thing that you could impart to us today to help us in our lives, what would it be?” Without hesitation I answer, “Find a need and fill it, find a hurt and heal it.”

Another thing I am always asked is, “if you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?” Again, without hesitation I say, “I would’ve dreamed bigger dreams and taken bigger risks, because every dream I had, God made it happen and every risk I took, God fulfilled it. The only limit to what I could accomplish was the size of my own dreams and risks.”
