Justin Thomas
Class of 2025
Justin Thomas is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Ministerial Leadership with a concentration in Biblical Studies.
During his time at SEU, Thomas has demonstrated exemplary leadership through his service as a member, social media director, and club president of the Student Theology Club, as well as spending two years as a resident assistant in Bauer Hall and Destino Hall. He is also a part of SEU’s Preaching Team, regularly ministering to retirement communities and faithfully serving his local church.

Karoline Leavitt
A New Hampshire native, Karoline Leavitt began her journey in the granite state, a place known for being politically savvy. She earned a degree in politics and communication at Saint Anselm College, where she founded the school’s broadcasting club and made a name for herself with an op-ed in the school’s newspaper criticizing the mainstream media for distorting truths for their own agenda.
In 2018, Leavitt got her start as a White House intern in the Office of Presidential Correspondence for President Donald Trump, and went on to be the office’s Associate Director. She then served as an Assistant Press Secretary under former White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany from 2019 to 2020. Following the 2020 election, Leavitt took her work over to Capitol Hill, where she served as Communications Director for Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, who would later encourage her to run for congress. Leavitt became one of the youngest people in history to win her primary in her home state of New Hampshire, where she ran for New Hampshire’s first congressional district.
Leavitt returned to President Trump’s team in 2024, serving as National Press Secretary for his 2024 presidential campaign, which led her to be appointed to her current position as Assistant to the President and the youngest-ever White House Press Secretary.

The Pageantry of Academic Regalia
Traditional academic attire originated in the Middle Ages as the regular garb of scholars. In the unheated buildings and lecture halls of the day, the robes, hoods, and caps were very practical.
The GOWN was useful outerwear, and it served to equalize class and wealth distinctions in the community of scholars. Today, in the U.S., the gown is customarily black, though it may be one of the colors of the school. The doctoral gown commonly has trim down the front and three velvet bars on the sleeves, in black or in the color of the degree field. To represent the President, the doctoral gown will have an extra chevron bar on the sleeve.
Additionally, the President will also wear the CHAIN OF OFFICE as a symbol of SEU’s history and tradition. Each Chain of Office is as unique as the institution it represents. SEU’s Chain of Office features small gold plates engraved with the names of the past presidents and their years of service. These plates are linked together and meet at the center, where the university’s seal is proudly displayed.
The HOOD originated as a practical head covering but today is strictly ceremonial. It is commonly worn by those holding master’s or doctoral degrees and differs in length according to the degree. Hoods are lined with the colors of the conferring institution and trimmed with an edging in the color of the degree field.
The “Oxford” CAP or MORTARBOARD possibly developed as a ceremonial combination of a close-fitted indoor cap and a soft square-topped outdoor cap.
The TASSEL is customarily worn on the left by degree holders, thus bachelor’s degree candidates wear the tassel on the right until the symbolic “moving of the tassel” at a climactic point in the graduation ceremony.
The golden CORDS worn by certain undergraduate students are used to indicate students with honors of GPAs of 3.5 and higher.

About Southeastern University
From its inception in 1935, Southeastern University (SEU) has been a Christ-centered, student-focused learning community.
