Student Speaker Ms. Claire Phypers Class of 2023

Claire Phypers is a social work major and a member of the School of Honors. This semester, she completed a 400-hour social work practicum at Pace Center for Girls, a middle and high school for at-risk teen girls in Polk County, Florida. Phypers also presented her Honors thesis, “Preventative Mental Health Measures for Ministerial Leaders,” at the Honors Symposium. During her time at Southeastern University, Phypers has served as a resident assistant, admissions tour guide, and a member of the Student Senate. She has also been a part of the SEU Missions student leadership team, helping to launch and lead teams. She participated in missions trips to Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Fiji; and was the team lead for trips to Northern Ireland, Greece, and Morocco. Upon graduation, Phypers plans to continue to work with SEU Missions and a local nonprofit organization centered around serving vulnerable populations. She would eventually like to work full time for a missions organization.
Commencement Speaker Rev. Greg Surratt
Greg Surratt is the founding pastor of Seacoast Church, which was planted with the goal of reaching unchurched people in the Charleston, South Carolina, area. Surratt planted Seacoast with a small group of like-minded people in 1988, who helped make over 16,000 phone calls to people in the area to better understand what they were looking for in a church. 6
Surratt led Seacoast as it grew from meeting in a movie theater to having its own building, and from having one campus to multiple campuses as the church became one of the first in the world to pioneer the multi-site approach to the weekend experience. Today, Seacoast has a dozen campuses throughout South Carolina and North Carolina, as well as a thriving online community. Surratt continues his role as founding pastor while his son, Josh, serves as the lead pastor. Over the past several years, Surratt has grown increasingly concerned with the mental health of pastors, as studies have shown that 40% of them are clinically depressed. In 2019, Surratt founded The Pastors Collective to address this growing crisis and opened The Retreat at Church Creek in 2021 to provide a refuge for pastors to rest and make lasting connections with others. Surratt is also a co-founder of the Association of Related Churches (ARC), a global church-planting initiative that has established over 1,000 churches worldwide since its founding in 2000. He is the author of IR-REV-REND, Re-visioning, and The Endurance Factor, as well as a contributor for Outreach Magazine, Ministry Today Magazine, and Charisma Magazine. Surratt is married to his childhood sweetheart, Debbie. Together, they have four children and 14 grandchildren. He enjoys photography, fishing, golfing, and rooting for the Cubs, Broncos, and Gamecocks.

This commencement program includes the names of those students who have applied for graduation and were cleared to participate in the commencement ceremony. The actual awarding of the diploma is contingent upon successful completion of every aspect of the student’s degree program. University Honors Scholars Graduating seniors who have fulfilled extensive program requirements for the Southeastern University School of Honors, including the successful completion of an indepth Honors Thesis, receive the designation of University Honors Scholar, which is noted in the program with the medallion symbol. Traditional academic attire originated in the Middle Ages as the regular garb of scholars. In the unheated buildings and lecture halls of the day, the robes, hoods, and caps were very practical. The GOWN was useful outerwear, and it served to equalize class and wealth distinctions in the community of scholars. Today, in the U.S., the gown is customarily black, though it may be one of the colors of the school. The doctoral gown commonly has trim down the front and three velvet bars on the sleeves, in black or in the color of the degree field. To represent the President, the doctoral gown will have an extra chevron bar on the sleeve. Additionally, the President will also wear the CHAIN OF OFFICE as a symbol of SEU’s history and tradition. Each Chain of Office is as unique as the institution it represents. SEU’s Chain of Office features small gold plates engraved with the names of the past presidents and their years of service. These plates are linked together and meet at the center, where the university’s seal is proudly displayed. The HOOD originated as a practical head covering but today is strictly ceremonial. It is commonly worn by those holding master’s or doctoral degrees and differs in length according to the degree. Hoods are lined with the colors of the conferring institution and trimmed with an edging in the color of the degree field. The “Oxford” CAP or MORTARBOARD possibly developed as a ceremonial combination of a close-fitted indoor cap and a soft square-topped outdoor cap. The TASSEL is customarily worn on the left by degree holders, thus bachelor’s degree candidates wear the tassel on the right until the symbolic “moving of the tassel” at a climactic point in the graduation ceremony.
The golden CORDS worn by certain undergraduate students are used to indicate students with honors of GPAs of 3.5 and higher.
