Second place was awarded to StatBridge, two international student-athletes who developed a sports performance networking app enabling athletes to collect, share and track data and skill development on an accessible, affordable platform. Their project also embedded a social initiative aimed at empowering promising athletes, especially refugees and those facing unique challenges. The duo was awarded gold smart rings. Other prizes included iPads, gaming monitors and Ray-Ban Meta Glasses for teams recognized in categories such as Most Creative App, Best Security Solution, Outstanding Social Impact and Best Educational or Financial Tool.

Love Your Neighbor

eton Hall launched a series of Love Your Neighbor Lent programs that began in March as students returned from Spring Break.

Residence Life, Campus Ministry and the Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE) hosted more than a dozen events, each focused on the theme question of “Who is my neighbor?,” adapted from the parable of the Good Samaritan.

The programs highlighted the Lenten pillars of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, encouraging the Seton Hall community to recognize peers as neighbors and challenging students to engage with their neighbors on campus and off.

The Candlelit Prayer Concert was presented in the outdoor University Center amphitheater. Students enjoyed hot pretzels — the twisted arms of bread being a symbol of prayer — and lit candles to pray, while student musicians played acoustic hymns.

The Phone Fast Lunch encouraged people to set aside their phones and speak directly with a friend or a stranger during the meal to promote personal connection over digital distraction.

The Clothing Swap gave community members the chance to shop for new-to-them clothing items collected by resident assistants in clothing drives leading up to the exchange, with support from DOVE. The Pirate’s Closet had a special corner for its collection of business-appropriate attire.

DOVE also partnered with Residence Life and Campus Ministry to facilitate four resident assistant hosted Service on Saturdays (SOS) volunteer days with North Jersey organizations.

Resident assistants from Boland Hall and the Complex also hosted Fast and Curious, a program discussing the fasting customs of Catholics and Muslims during the coinciding liturgical seasons of Lent and Ramadan. And in Boland, resident assistants hosted a trivia game show program called Do You Know Your Neighbor?

Finding Inspiration in the Lab

A

STEM undergraduate research award has enabled student Reva Pavithran to spend more time in the lab with chemistry professor James Hanson, Ph.D., as the two explore the effects of zirconium dioxide as an oxidizing agent.

Before the award, Pavithran had been working in Hanson’s lab, but funding was limited.

Undergraduate students have limited free time and often have to work, so they usually can complete only a section of a project and use it for their undergraduate thesis.

But the award means Pavithran has been able to be in the lab working on the project more frequently.

As a fourth-year psychology major with a minor in chemistry, Pavithran has aspirations of attending medical school. By collaborating on this study, she will have a competitive advantage when applying for admission.

With a goal of publishing the outcomes of their project, the team also hope to use this study for a presentation at next year’s Petersheim Academic Exposition at the University.

Their work has involved developing zirconium dioxide as a new photocatalyst — they have found it oxidizes materials with less UV light, which could open the door for many new uses.

heryl Steadman, M.P.A. ’99/M.S. ’19, has put her Seton Hall master’s degrees to use as the founder and CEO of H.O.P.E. Collective, Inc. a nonprofit

organization with a foundation in “Helping Others through Partnerships and Exchanges.” The main objective of the organization is to provide integrated solutions to problems that many rural communities face.

Having grown up in a small town in South Carolina, Steadman moved to New Jersey in 1994, working as a compliance officer at Prudential Insurance (now Prudential Financial). After seeing how rural communities never blossom like larger cities do, she decided to pursue an M.P.A. at Seton Hall, drawn to the opportunity to study nonprofit management and work for an organization that aligned with her personal values.

“I discovered that I could get an M.P.A. from Seton Hall, and also do something with a specialization in nonprofit management, a sector that I always wanted to pursue,” Steadman says.
