K. Anthony Thomas ’95

K. ANTHONY THOMAS is an Assistant Federal Public Defender at the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the District of New Jersey. For over twenty years, Mr. Thomas has been a zealous advocate of persons charged with federal criminal offenses. In his capacity as an AFPD, Mr. Thomas handles his client’s matter from pre-indictment proceedings through appeals that are litigated before the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Mr. Thomas is also an adjunct professor at his alma mater, Seton Hall University School of Law, where he teaches Advanced Criminal Practice, and Persuasion and Advocacy. He also teaches in the law school’s Summer Institute for Pre-Legal Studies.

There, he blends his trial skills with the courses he regularly teaches to ensure aspiring law students experience an engaging simulated law school experience. Mr. Thomas is also a volunteer coach for several of the law school’s mock trial teams.

Mr. Thomas served several terms as a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on Character and he presently serves as on the Board of Trustees at Philip’s Academy Charter School, Newark, New Jersey.

Anthony Thomas’ early interest in law and politics expanded while working for a nonprofit real estate development corporation in his hometown of Jersey City, New Jersey. There he co-supervised the construction of 33 units of affordable housing that was funded by a fortune five hundred company. This position required Mr. Thomas to monitor a $5 million construction budget, supervise site personnel, direct tenant selection, and market units to the community. It was during this time, that Mr. Thomas was inspired to attend law school at night, in order to enlarge the impact he could make in his community.

While a part-time law student at Seton Hall and full-time employee, Anthony Thomas was an active member of his law school’s student government where he was elected as the first African-American President of the Student Bar Association.

Additionally, he served as a student representative of numerous law school faculty committees and was responsible for spear-heading the change in the law school’s fall examination schedule from post-Christmas to pre-Christmas.

Mr. Thomas left the nonprofit sector to become a law clerk at the law firm of Waters, McPherson, & McNeill, P.C. Given his stellar work at the firm, upon his law school graduation, he was offered an associate position and remained at the firm until he departed for his present position. His love for criminal defense practice has replaced his prior drive to obtain a law degree in pursuit of a political career.

Mr. Thomas obtained his college degree from Providence College where he played on the school’s football team and was active in student life. He participated in the school’s Karate Club, was an on-air personality at the school’s radio station, and was a member of the Friar Cheerleader Team.

In addition to practicing law and teaching, Anthony Thomas finds time to pursue his other interests in home remodeling and running. It’s often that you find him assisting others in their home renovation projects and utilizing his skills as a selftaught “electrician.” He is proud to share that he competed in several half-marathons and the 2019 NYC Marathon. He was looking forward to his first ultra-marathon, 2020 Zion Ultra-Marathon, a 100K race through the desert of Southern Utah, but it was cancelled due to COVID-19. Last, but not least, Mr. Thomas is a proud member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, and a recent member of Peloton Nation.

Aside from his work, and commitment to serving his community and helping others, K. Anthony Thomas’ greatest accomplishment is being a father to his amazing children, Sasha (16) and Chase (14).

History of the Red Mass Named from the red vestments used in celebrating the Mass and from the red robes worn by judges in the Middle Ages, the Red Mass is traditionally a Solemn Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit celebrated at the beginning of the judicial year to invoke God’s blessing and guidance in the administration of justice.

In accordance with a practice dating back to the 13th century, the celebrants — government officials, lawyers and judges — would proceed into a church clothed in red vestments or red garments, signifying the fire of the Holy Spirit’s guidance to those who pursue justice in their daily lives. The first Red Mass in the United States took place in New York City in 1928, celebrated at old St. Andrew’s Church on Duane Street

by His Eminence Patrick Cardinal Hayes, who strongly encouraged and supported the legal community’s involvement in spreading the Word of God. Since that time, many groups of Catholic attorneys have continued to organize the Red Mass annually. Currently celebrated in dioceses throughout the United States, it is the 36th annual Red Mass for Seton Hall University School of Law.
