School Improvement Plan 2021 Focus One: Evangelisation Plan Specific: Continue to build on the legacy of St Elizabeth Seton. Promote student-developed book about Elizabeth Seton. Build greater understanding by all members of staff and students of the importance of Catholic Identity, College values and religious practice.

Actions/Strategies Undertaken & Outcomes Staff engagement in prayer Held at the beginning of each week, Staff prayer will offer staff a chance to come together as a community.

Staff prayer will be led each week by a different staff group, department or House. Staff are encouraged to take ownership of staff prayer by creating insightful and engaging prayers to meet staff where they are on their unique faith journey.

Staff prayer will take place in the Chapel or in other areas of the school to promote unique and different experiences of prayer.

The Campus Minister will be available to help staff groups develop and organise staff prayer.

Student engagement in prayer Shared Prayer was introduced at Seton Catholic College in 2020.

Each Friday students join in Shared Prayer.

Shared Prayer will highlight important events in the school calendar and the liturgical calendar of the Church.

Shared Prayer is led by students and PCG teachers.

Each Pastoral Care room will have a sacred space within the room. This sacred space will be the focal point for shared prayer and liturgical celebrations.

Professional Development Ministry Professional Development is offered to all staff.

Professional Development will offer staff members the opportunity to renew accreditation.

Faith, Story and Witness will be offered for staff throughout the year.

The Story of Elizabeth Seton The story of the College patron St Elizabeth Seton will be promoted in Religious Education curriculum and Ministry.

The Year 7 Religious Education curriculum will focus on educating students on the College patron and House patrons as a key component of their transition to the College.

Year 12 students will complete an investigation on Elizabeth Seton as a significant person in the Catholic Church.

The Story of Elizabeth Seton, a book created by Seton students, will be distributed to all Year 7 students. This book will evolve continually with new contributions added.

The new administration building was named the ‘Mother Seton Centre.’

The main street that runs through the centre of the College was named ‘Paca Street’ in honour of Elizabeth Seton.

A statue of Elizabeth Seton at the entrance of the Mother Seton Centre will further connect the physical buildings and layout of the College with the story of Elizabeth Seton.

Focus Two: Aboriginal Education Plan Focus Specific: Increase Aboriginal Scholarship Applications and the total number of enrolled Indigenous students.

Actions/Strategies Undertaken & Outcomes Aboriginal Teacher Assistant (ATA) employed 5 days per week.

Miss Erin Tapp has now been employed 5 days a week so that she has time to not only work alongside our students on a day to day basis, but also have time to develop programs, organise events and develop an important connection with our local community.

Establishing the Ngalla Maya Wellbeing Centre (Student Services Centre).

Our Ngalla Maya Wellbeing Centre has been renamed to ensure our Aboriginal heritage is visible at the heart of our school.

Our ATA is now located in this centre, alongside other key wellbeing staff.

Two large canvas works were created in a collaboration between artists from Urban Indigenous and our Indigenous students to create a sense of space.

Staff and Student Education Our community has a greater appreciation of Aboriginal culture and is more culturally aware due to NAIDOC Week and Reconciliation Week initiatives. Running 10 full days of activities, as well as the embedding of culture into classrooms and lessons, has increased growth in understanding.

Engagement with CEWA Aboriginal Education Team will further add to the education of College staff.

Kaartidjin Student Leaders (Junior and Senior) also have a role in education and ensure that all students have an opportunity to see the Indigenous perspective.

Increase numbers of Indigenous enrolments at the application phase.

Seton offers special College tours (Wandju Tours) for our Aboriginal families (on top of regular opportunities). We welcome families to take a tour of our school with our Deputy Principal, ATA and our Kaartdijin Leaders.

Scholarships are also offered to Aboriginal families to ensure finance is not a barrier.

Focus Three: Writing Specific: All students show measurable growth in NAPLAN writing results to be at the same level, or better, than like schools.

Actions/Strategies Undertaken & Outcomes Literacy Strategy to improve writing – Glossary of terms/cognitive verbs and TEEL paragraph structure posters displayed in all Year 7 and 8 classrooms.

Use of OneNote class notebooks across learning areas.

ReviseOnline was introduced in Year 11 and 12 ATAR to increase students' practice of written responses and construction of answers, and also allowed for comparison to WACE exam exemplar answers.

Literacy workshops were held outside of timetabled lessons and during Year 11 and 12 Life Balance lessons.

Posters with key terms for each faculty area were introduced in 2021.

One literacy lesson per week was scheduled in each faculty.

Case management meetings were held for Foundations students.

100% of Year 12 students successfully passed OLNA literacy and numeracy.

100% of Year 12 students achieved WACE graduation.

Focus Four: Development of Culture of staff review & Seton Teacher Specific: Teaching staff involved in formal and informal process of review and linked to Seton Teacher, Australian Insitute for Teachers and School Leadership (AITSL) and personal growth plans.

Actions/Strategies Undertaken & Outcomes Learning Walks facilitated for teachers to observe the learning occurring in other teachers’ classes. Teachers reflected on the practices they observed and shared their learnings with their learning area colleagues.

All teachers used online surveys to gain student feedback from two of their classes.

The Seton Teacher Working Party developed a matrix to inform professional discussions about teacher performance in a Seton context. This resource will be utilised in coaching, mentoring and growth plan development.

The Seton Mentoring Group developed a set of resources based on CEWA best practice to support the mentoring of pre-service and beginning teachers.

A new Seton Staff statement details what it means to work at Seton Catholic College and this is aligned with our Vision for Learning.

A wellbeing survey was distributed to all staff to gather feedback and inform wellbeing initiatives in the College.

Focus Five: Teaching & Learning (Vision for Learning) Specific: Better curriculum offering and student engagement in learning. Learning experiences incorporate important content and skills.

Actions/Strategies Undertaken & Outcomes Planning and creation of a Design Hub in E16 began, with new Year 9 design courses (3D design) offered and taken up at subject selection.

‘Seton Skills’ were defined, and posters were created for classrooms and OneNote class notebooks.

‘Seton Skills’ were included in planning, teaching, assessing and reporting for Years 7-12 across all learning areas.

New offerings in Year 11 and 12, including Psychology and Literature General (support pathway towards Murdoch Flexitrack High).

Vision for Learning working group presented to all College staff, with whole staff agreement on core values as a framework for our Vision for Learning, including a Seton Graduate profile within College RISE values.

An additional Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert was successfully accepted into the program raising the number of Seton staff accepted to 3. This makes Seton one of the highest employers of Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts in the state.

5 staff also successfully completed Microsoft Trainer certification.

Microsoft OneNote is used across all Year 7 classes.

The timetable was collapsed to enable a week-long Year 7 cross-curricular STEM project.

Future Experience (FX) camp was successfully run in Year 10. Students were given an integrated camp experience with university, TAFE and workplace visits along with speakers and activities around career development.

The Year 9 Future Ready Program was run as a mandated elective for all students in Year 9. Career profiling, reflection on personal journey and career development tools included.

School Advisory Council Chair's Report 2021 It is with great pleasure to present the 2021 Seton Catholic College School Advisory Council Annual Report. As Chair of the School Advisory Council, alongside my fellow council members Mr Daniel Papaphotis (Treasurer), Mr Justin Geoghegan (Secretary), Mr Teddy Craies, Mr Alex Foster (CSPWA Representative), Father Paul Raj, Mr Joseph Hoyne (College Principal) and Mr Peter Farrer-Smith (Director of Finance & Operations) we reflect on the activities of the Council over the last twelve months. Special thanks is also extended to Mrs Kymberly Florenca for her support throughout the year.

Thank you to Mr Justin Goeghegan for his contribution during his five year membership, and Mr Teddy Craies who completed one term (three years) on the Advisory Council.

We also thank and acknowledge Mrs Emma Herrick (who resigned for personal circumstances earlier in the year), and Mrs Alana Mera (Minute Secretary Term 1). It is with great sadness that we must also say goodbye to Mr Joseph Hoyne (College Principal in 2021) and congratulate him for his leadership and achievements in the last six years at Seton Catholic College. Mr Hoyne’s appointment as School Improvement Adviser at the Catholic Education Office will be of great advantage to Catholic Education throughout all of Western Australia. On behalf of the Advisory Council, I give special thanks to Mr Hoyne for the commitment, compassion and professionalism he has dedicated to growing a very successful school community.

At the 2021 Annual General Meeting we welcomed new Advisory Council members for 2022: Mrs Kristy Polimeno, Mrs Nikki Harney, Mr James Punch, Mr Alex Foster (stepping down from CSPWA Representative to Advisory Council Member), Mrs Meredith Drynan and Mr Mike Waine (new CSPWA Representative). Due to commence in January 2022 Mr Chris Wallace, in the position of Principal at Seton Catholic College, will complete the membership to the School Advisory Council 2022 and beyond. All new members bring diversity, vibrancy, and enthusiasm to the Council and extended College community.

As communicated via various school channels this year the Seton Catholic College Board has transitioned to become the Seton School Advisory Council. This will be official and effective as of January 2022 and the Council will operate in accordance with the Terms of Reference, Quality Catholic Education Policies, Executive Directives and the Delegations of Authority. The Advisory Council is accountable to the Catholic Education Commission of WA (CECWA).

The function of the Advisory Council is not unlike the previous Board, in the provision of a structured means of support and expertise to the Principal and Executive Team.

On 18 June 2021, as Advisory Council Chair I attended the Catholic Schools Advisory Council Chair Conference, joining all current chairs of primary and secondary CEWA schools across WA. This day set out the new governance framework in providing key discussions and presentations around enacting the vision of Catholic Education, linking Catholic Identity, Education, Community and Stewardship. Inclusive of a special panel discussion around ‘Why parents matter’, the day was insightful and provided valuable networking with other board members in the community. It did also highlight the achievements of Seton College community, so I was very proud to represent the school on the day.

This year the Advisory Council came together to meet twice a term. A standard agenda has been presented at each of the meetings and we have thankfully been able to meet mostly in person, without too much impact from COVID restrictions. Joseph Hoyne has presented regular Principal Reports structured around the four areas of CEWA Strategic Directions. This has provided an insight into the progress of the School Improvement Plan and the College Strategic Plan 2020 – 2024. There are so many to name; however, one was the improved understanding of Aboriginal culture and awareness through some truly great activities held throughout NAIDOC Week and Reconciliation Day, as well as the future steps planned to increase enrolments via Indigenous Scholarships offered at the College.

Mr Peter Farrer-Smith, Director of Finance & Operations, has presented the College Finance and Operations Report regularly. It is evident that there is close analysis of the College's financial position, the 2022 budget and the projections related to enrolments. As seen last year the reductions in operating incomes (e.g. enrolments, departures) and limitations in state government grants will continue to have an impact on the next two years' budgets. Through thorough planning and continued analysis of the current and future needs of the student population, the Advisory Council is confident and in support of the College Executive Team in its management, ensuring the viability of school funding, future enrolment management and affordability for existing families.

Special thanks to the CSPWA (previously P&F) for the continued support of events like the Parent & Staff Sundowner event in October, Father's Day Breakfast and Mother's Day Afternoon Tea in bringing the school community together. I would like to acknowledge the College Staff who continue to go beyond for our students and families at Seton Catholic College community.

School Performance Information 2021 Contextual Information Seton Catholic College is a Catholic co-educational College located in Samson which is fifteen kilometres from the Perth CBD and five kilometres from the heart of Fremantle.

Seton Catholic College was established in January 1990 as a secondary school of the Archdiocese of Perth. It is a Catholic College founded on the traditions and experience of the two pre-existing schools from which it was developed – St Brendan’s College, established in 1964 by the Society of African Missions, and De Vialar College, established by the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition in 1968 from their previously existing St Joseph’s School in Fremantle, established in 1855.

St Elizabeth Ann Seton whom the College is named after was the first American to be canonised in 1975 by Pope John Paul VI. St Elizabeth Seton was a wife, mother, convert, educator, religious foundress, widow and saint who lived in America in the 19th Century. Her legacy lives on through the work of the Sisters of Charity of St Joseph in their work supporting children, families and the elderly through the provision of education and health care services. Mother Seton started the first free school, St Joseph's in Emmitsburg USA in 1810.

The College is known for its high-quality pastoral care which permeates all aspects of school life. Its importance is based on the belief that we are all made in God’s likeness and, therefore, each one of us is valued and deeply respected. We believe both students and staff will give their best when they feel part of a positive community where there is respect for each other.

Each student at Seton belongs to one of six Houses, each run by a Head of House who keeps a close eye on the academic progress and general welfare of each of their students. A program for new students ensures that they feel welcome, make new friends and are comfortable with College structures and programs. We see and believe that every interaction matters in developing and maintaining a flourishing Catholic school.

The College currently caters for 1000 students from Year 7 to 12 and offers the full range of academic and vocational subjects that parents and students have come to expect. We are proud to promote and acknowledge students for their dedication and commitment to their studies whilst academically gifted students are exposed to a variety of learning experiences that are designed to present them with new challenges.

Seton Catholic College is currently going through a period of growth with a healthy projected enrolment. It is envisaged the College community will grow to 1080 students in the coming years as strong enrolments are being experienced in Year 7, with student numbers in Year 7 in 2021 being over 200 students. Our ‘Set for Seton, Set for Life’ rogram and philosophy enables students to feel welcomed and comfortable as they participate in a wide variety of activities to enhance spiritual, academic and personal growth.

Attendance is monitored by the teaching staff during pastoral care time at the commencement of the school day and then throughout the day during each lesson. Non-attendance is followed up each day with a text message to parents/guardians to ensure the student is at home. A note is then brought in by the students following the absence and is recorded on the SEQTA Data Base.

Parent, Teacher & Student Satisfaction 2021 Seton Catholic College is a thriving community and throughout each year there are a number of opportunities for our whole community to express their opinions and reflect on the experiences they have had at the College. Regular surveys involving students, parent/student/teacher information evenings, School Advisory Council meetings, CSPWA meetings (previously P&F), staff meetings, weekly staff prayer and briefings, direct contact with the College through the Principal, Deputy Principals or members of staff, as well as communication via SEQTA are some avenues this occurs.

Parents Parents play an extremely important role in the life of the College and contribute in many positive ways to the education of their children at the College. Seton’s ‘Team Seton’ initiative was developed to highlight the importance of all members of our community in shaping the holistic development of a child. When children see their parents and teachers sharing common beliefs, attitudes, values and goals, they feel more secure and demonstrate a greater sense of self-worth.

It is through parents, teachers and students working together that great results are achieved. On the whole parent satisfaction with the College is high as indicated by the level of parent involvement in extracurricular activities and parent/ teacher information evenings. Anecdotal information around parent perception is also received when a sibling may be enrolling at the College. The feedback received from parents reinforces the excellent educational experience students receive at Seton Catholic College.

Students Seton Catholic College is a well-resourced school and students have access to a wide range of excellent and up-to-date facilities. The learning environment and learning tools are constantly updated to help engage and stimulate the students.

There are numerous cultural and sporting opportunities offered to the students and they are encouraged to actively participate in these. Our staff members are extremely supportive and encourage the students to achieve their potential through various educational and extra-curricular programs. The development of the Ngalla Maya Centre has also added to the wellbeing of the student body.

Student exit surveys for Year 7-11, indicated that students state they enjoy the experience of school while at Seton Catholic College. The Year 12 Exit Survey indicates the students are very appreciative and pleased with the education they received and the support they have gained from their teachers. Some specific examples from our 2021 exiting students included; Students felt strongly encouraged to accept their responsibilities and respect the dignity of the individual.

They felt there were very good opportunities to develop their leadership skills.

While at school they felt safe.

The vertical pastoral care system helped them mix with many students.

They recognised that Seton staff voluntarily give up many extra hours for students and they were appreciative of this.

Staff Our staff have access and are encouraged to attend Professional Development to help them grow personally, faithfully and as educators. They are also vital members of our collaborative decision-making processes relating to education and their contributions are valued and respected by the College Executive.

We have staff who are cognisant of contemporary teaching pedagogy and up to date with the Courses of Study for Senior Secondary Students and the development of the Western Australian Curriculum. They are provided with the resources and learning environments that are necessary for them to maintain a challenging classroom for students. Staff are encouraged to participate in Learning Area professional organisations as well as Learning Area courses offered by Catholic Education Western Australia.

Our staff had the opportunity to provide feedback in regards to their wellbeing in a staff survey in 2021. A number of areas were identified for development, with both structural and operational changes put into place to assist staff wellbeing. Seton has also begun a Staff Wellbeing Program, designed in conjunction with the University of Notre Dame Australia, which aligns with CEWA’s Staff Wellbeing Policy.

Value Added 2021 There are a number of factors that contribute to enhancing the learning opportunities for students. As a Catholic school, Seton’s Religious Education Program is an integral component of the Year 7 -12 curriculum.

Students also participate in the celebration of the Eucharist regularly through the House system and College Mass.

We see the education of the whole person as central to student development while at Seton and to ensure they become active, productive citizens once they complete their formal education.

Post School Destinations 53% of Seton ATAR students applied for University through the TISC process. 73% were offered their first preference and 90% in the first round of offers.

Over 50% of Seton students were offered a University place via the early offers process at Perth Universities before the end of Year 12.

28 students completed the Murdoch Flexitrack High Program and gained access to any 70 ATAR course at Murdoch University.
