In 1979, the late Larry Leon Hamlin founded the North Carolina Black Repertory Company, the first professional black theatre company in North Carolina. In the years since then, the company has thrived, presenting not only its own acclaimed season but also a widely respected event, the National Black Theatre Festival, since 1989.
