In 1979, the late Larry Leon Hamlin founded the North Carolina Black Repertory Company, the first professional black theatre company in North Carolina. In the years since then, the company has thrived, presenting not only its own acclaimed season but also a widely respected event, the National Black Theatre Festival, since 1989.

SETC celebrates that rich history with the presentation of its Distinguished Career Award to the organization at the 2020 SETC Convention. Artistic Director Jackie Alexander (right) will deliver a keynote at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29. NBTF Executive Producer Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin (far right), who is Hamlin’s widow, will join Alexander for a Q&A session.
