READY TO DIRECT The Ready to Direct Competition offers early-career directors who are seeking professional experience an opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals and possibly even earn work at a professional theatre.

A select group of pre-registered candidates participate in an immersive schedule of directing-focused events at the SETC Convention. These events are open to observation by companies interested in hiring a Ready to Direct candidate. Up to three candidates may receive a professional directing opportunity and payment as negotiated with the hiring theatre. SETC supports the companies financially by offering hiring grants.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT Every community owes its existence and heritage to generations from around the world who contributed their hopes, dreams, and stories to making the history that led to this moment. Some had their dreams shattered when they were brought here against their will, some were drawn to leave their distant homes in hope of a better life, and some have lived and continue to live on this land where they have told their stories for more generations than can be counted. Before the Southeastern Theatre Conference connected the nation through theatre, the Saponi, Occaneechi, and Catawba Peoples connected their children, elders, and ancestors through stories, hopes, and dreams, and have stewarded this land for over 13,000 years. It is with gratitude that we honor the land and the First Nation people who call Greensboro home, and we also acknowledge that we benefit from their tragic loss of land through colonialism, genocide, and systematic attack. As recently

as 1951, the Catawba Indian Nation’s government was “terminated” by the US federal government, and was not reinstated until 1993. The elders say that they have lived here forever, that they looked up at the sky and the Creators gave them their language and culture. We encourage SETC constituents to research and acknowledge the indigeneity of the land where your institution sits. Today, the State of North Carolina recognizes eight tribes as ancestors: Eastern Band of Cherokee, Coharie, Lumbee, Haliwa-Saponi, Sappony, Meherrin, Occaneechi Band of Saponi Nation, and Waccamaw-Siouan tribes. This Land Acknowledgement challenges us to learn from their plight, and to draw from their traditions of language, spirituality, and storytelling to better understand community, respect, and stewardship of this great land.

Jim LeBrecht

Sound Designer, Filmmaker, and Disability Rights Activist Jim LeBrecht has over 40 years of experience as a film and theater sound designer and mixer, filmmaker, author and disability rights activist.

LeBrecht co-directed and co-produced, with Nicole Newnham, the 2021 Oscarnominated feature-length documentary, Crip Camp.

Jim’s work as an activist began in high school and continued at UC, San Diego, where he helped found the Disabled Students Union. Jim is currently a board member at the Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund.

Some of LeBrecht’s additional accomplishments include co-founding Crip Camp received the 2020 Sundance Film FWD-Doc, an organization that supports Festival Audience Award for feature-length documentary filmmakers with disabilities documentary, the 2021 Independent Spirit and being a character consultant for Pixar Animation Studios for two of their Award for Best Feature Documentary and films. a 2021 Peabody Award.

Jim began his career in the theater in 1978, working as the resident sound designer at Berkeley Repertory Theatre for 10 years.

In 1996, LeBrecht founded Berkeley Sound Artists, an audio postproduction house. His film credits include Minding the Gap, The Island President, The Waiting Room, udrie and Daisy and, of course, Crip Camp.

Jim is a member of the Disability Futures Fellowship, an initiative of the Ford Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

Her Off-Broadway credits include Little Shop of Horrors (Drama Desk, Drama League & Outer Critics Circle Awards) and Puffs. Past credits include Nubia (featuring the queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race), Boy Gets Violent (Ars Nova’s AntFest), Summer Valley Fair (New York Musical Theatre Festival), Ryan J. Haddad’s Hi, Are You Single (2015 Hot! Festival and 2016 Under The Radar) and Here’s Hoover (directed by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers).

She spent the early part of her producing career as Associate Producer at Tom Kirdahy Productions (White Rabbit Red Rabbit, The Jungle, It’s Only A Play) where she was mentored by Tom Kirdahy and the late Terrence McNally. Prior to that, she served as Producing Associate at Williamstown Theatre Festival where she worked on Broadway and off-Broadway productions of The Bridges of Madison County, Fool for Love, Living on Love, The Old Man and The Old Moon, and The Visit.

Sally Cade holds a Masters Degree in Arts Administration with an advanced certificate in Arts Enterprise from Boston University. She received her BS in Theatre Studies with a minor in Religious Studies from the University of Evansville.

Narelle Sissons Scenic Design Narelle Sissons (she/her) is an award-winning scene and costume designer whose designs have appeared on Broadway and at major theatres and opera companies across the U.S. and internationally. She has been nominated for Drama Desk, American Theatre Wing, Helen Hayes and Kevin Kline Awards and is a winner of a Back Stage West Award and a Leon Rabin Award. Her design work includes Mabou Mines Dollhouse, directed by Lee Breuer, and many productions with Labyrinth, an intersectional theatre company.

A native of the UK, Sissons graduated from the Central St. Martins School of Art and Design in London and earned her master’s degree at the Royal College of Art. She has lived in the United States for 28 years and currently is a professor of scene and costume design at Carnegie Mellon University.

COVID PROTOCOLS SETC, as a producer of a very large indoor event and one that spans several days, has a responsibility to our many constituents and other business entities to do our due diligence for everyone’s safety. The last thing we want is to become a super spreader event or be forced to shut down Convention and send everyone home early.

SETC is setting forth the following COVID protocols for Convention. We want everyone attending in-person to know that we are doing all that is reasonably possible for your protection and comfort.

The theatre industry’s unions (with many producing/ hiring companies following lead) are requiring and re-opening with similar protocols.

As you enoy the SETC Convention this week, it’s critical that you read the following for entry requirements to the event.

COVID vaccination is required. Upon arrival to Convention, participants are required to provide documentation of full COVID-19 vaccination (with final dose date no later than February 23, 2022) OR as an alternative, documentation of a recent negative PCR diagnostic test within 72-hours of Mar. 9, 2022 (no earlier than NOON on Mar. 6).

Fully vaccinated means a person has received their primary series (two doses) of COVID-19 vaccines. When eligible, additional booster shots are recommended by the CDC, but are not required for SETC.

◦ Proof of COVID vaccination or negative PCR test ◦ Wear a mask at all times (unless actively auditioning, eating, or drinking) ◦ Daily temperature checks ◦ Stay home if you are sick ◦ Get an early start when heading to the convention center

Please be prepared to present either your original vaccination card, a printed copy, or a digital copy of such card. Unvaccinated attendees must have proof of a negative PCR diagnostic test within 72-hours of Mar. 9, 2022 (no earlier than NOON Noon on Mar. 6) and provide proof of a negative result prior to entry. Rapid tests will not be accepted.

Please carry your proof of vaccination or negative test with you at all times during Convention. There are several apps like MyChart that you and your healthcare provider can use to upload your status and documentation.

However, originals, printed copies, or digital copies will be accepted.

Masks are required at all times. Unless you are an actor performing an audition, masks will be required for all performers, workshops, activities, social gatherings, etc., unless eating/drinking. We also kindly ask that masks be worn in hotel public spaces.

Temperature checks will be made daily at the three main entrances to the Renasant Convention Center. If you present a temperature of 100.4 or more (per the CDC), you will be asked to return to your hotel for quarantine.

Our COVID Compliance Officers will step in to advise from there.

Social distancing will be put into place where possible. Social distancing is strongly encouraged and set-ups will accommodate where possible. Please work to remain 10’ away in callback rooms.

Certified COVID Compliance Officers will be onsite. They will be members of a private Memphis health care company in charge of consulting and issues that might arise. In addition, all SETC Central Office Staff will have been trained and certified.

There will be no on-site testing. Rapid and in-home testing is expensive and does not prove reliable unless viral loads are high. SETC is counting on all participants to be proactive, get their vaccines, and necessary negative PCR tests prior to coming to Convention. If an unvaccinated participant arrives without the required negative PCR test, they will not be allowed entry. Respectfully, there will be no exceptions and no refunds.

The Renasant Convention Center has GBAC Star Facility Accreditation for its demonstration of superior ability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from bio-risk and infectious disease situations.

The Renasant Convention Center ventilation system is standard with outside air and economizer mode on all units and meets all codes required. Units run continuously, year round.

Disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer stations will be available throughout the Renasant Convention Center. We encourage everyone to be proactive and take a moment to wipe, spray, and sanitize.

Stay home or at your hotel if you are sick. It’s not worth it to compromise your own and others’ health. If you have symptoms, even after testing negative just prior to Convention, please do not travel. SETC will be happy to provide a full refund.

Get an early start. With vaccine validations, temperature checks, badge pick-up, social distancing, problem-solving, etc., it’s most probable that it will take SETC a little longer to get everyone safely checked in and on the go. Registration desk hours are located on page 6, and Pro Auditionees may arrive 30 minutes earlier each day to check in before their briefings.

What is listed above is subject to change as this is an ever-evolving situation, so requirements and instructions may shift after the printing of this program. We kindly ask that you pay vigilant attention to our e-mails, posted signage, and the SETC Convention App (see page 6) concerning what is required of you to attend. Small Jokes About Monsters

by Steven Strafford Steven Strafford is a Brooklyn-born playwright and actor. He is the author and performer of the award-winning Methtacular! He has performed that solo show across the country at LORT theatres, universities and LGBTQ spaces.

Methtacular! was filmed at Steppenwolf Theatre’s 1700 Space in 2019. His play Small Jokes About Monsters won the 2016 New American Voices Competition and was a semi-finalist for The O’Neill New Play Conference and received productions in Chicago, Houston (nominated - Houston Theatre Award Outstanding New Play) and Sioux City, Iowa. His play Greater Illinois was a finalist for Jackie Demaline Play Award as well as a semi-finalist at The O’Neill.

Greater Illinois is currently in development with several theatres. His short plays, Use Your Noodles and The Breakup Play have each had multiple university productions. Methtacular! will be included in a forthcoming anthology of solo plays from Opus Books. His essay, “College Dreams” was published in the book, The Anatomy of Silence. His acting credits include stages across the country and the world, film, TV, and commercials.

Brief Synopsis: Ryan says there are three different kinds of funny people: Godzillas, Mothras and Gameras. He and his two brothers rent a beach house after their estranged father’s funeral to open the envelope their father left them. When their mother shows up, truths are revealed and tempers flare.

Small Jokes About Monsters is a comedic family drama about how we choose to deal with trauma, and how we use humor to cover it up.

Mirroring the erratic path of grief itself, A Complicated Hope flashes between the moments in time that changed them all. Their journeys explore the challenges of both finding a family of choice and letting yourself be found.

John Mabey is a writer and storyteller whose plays have been produced on stage in seven countries and throughout the United States. John lived internationally for a decade in London and Amsterdam before residing in Atlanta and continues to work with theatre companies around the globe both virtually and in-person. John is also a certified Mental Health Counselor and published author on the topics of sexual identity and spirituality in academic books and journals. In 2021, John was awarded the Panowski Playwriting Award and had plays published in Smith & Kraus Best 10-Minute Plays and Smith & Kraus Best Women’s Monologues. Graduate Winner: Garret Lee Milton, MFA Absurd Audiences: Considering Reception Theories for the Premieres of Waiting for Godot

Garret Lee Milton is a playwright, theatre scholar, and educator from Washington, D.C. Garret has received numerous staged readings and productions of his plays throughout the United States and abroad, including such venues as The Kennedy Center, Cleveland Play House, and the Forbes Performing Arts Center. He has presented original drama and scholarship through the Association for Theatre in Higher Education, the Mid-America Theatre Conference, and the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

Garret is currently a doctoral graduate student in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Texas Tech University where he also teaches theatre appreciation and playwriting.

Saltbox Theatre Collective Vivian is an attractive woman but her beauty is a touch overshadowed by her exhaustion. She looks and acts passionately and yet is stalked by the shadows that come from knowing the fleeting nature of life. She is wearing a toga and is very earnestly performing a scene from Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra. She is, of course, Cleopatra. There is a script on the chair next to her and a box filled with rubber snakes.

Some of them stick out of the top. We catch her mid-scene as she steps back into a role that means more to her than she realizes.

The Market Theatre Company (South Carolina) Written by Duncan MacMillan with Jonny Donahoe, Directed by Drew Whitley You’re six years old. Your mom’s in the hospital, and your dad says she’s “done something stupid.” She finds it hard to be happy, so you start to make a list of everything that’s brilliant about the world, everything that’s worth living for: 1. ice cream, 2. kung fu movies, 3. burning things, 4. laughing so hard you shoot milk from your nose, 5. construction cranes, 6. me. You leave it on her pillow. Soon, the list will take on a life of its own. Every Brilliant Thing is a play about depression and the lengths we will go to for those we love.

Tupelo Community Theatre (Mississippi) Written by Conor McPherson, Directed by Tom Booth The Seafarer is a 2006 play by Irish playwright Conor McPherson set on Christmas Eve in Dublin. The play centers on James “Sharky” Harkin, an alcoholic who has recently returned to live with his blind, aging brother, Richard Harkin. As Sharky attempts to stay off the bottle during the holidays, he contends with the hard-drinking, irascible Richard and his own haunted conscience.

Momentum Dance Company (Georgia) Music by Tom Snow, Lyrics by Dean Pitchford, Directed by Maggie Walls Footloose: Youth Edition celebrates the exhilaration of youth, the wisdom of listening to one another, and the power of forgiveness. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, he is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn’t prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher. When the reverend’s rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren’s reputation. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him.

Adjudicator Marci J. Duncan earned a BA in performance at Florida A&M University and her Masters in Acting at the University of Florida. She studied television and film acting with Evonne Suhor at Orlando’s Art Sake Acting Studio, where she is a resident ensemble member, substitute instructor, and has starred in three consecutive seasons in their Play De Luna Series. Some of her extensive acting theatre credits include: Two Trains Running, Seven Guitars, Crowns, Pretty Fire, The Contract, The Mountaintop,The Best of Enemies and Florida Girls. Marci’s film work includes (Just) Another Day co-starring with Jamie Hectar from HBO’s The Wire and Life is not a Fairytale: The Fantasia Barrino Story, working with Debbie Allen and Fantasia Barrino and a NBC network television series called Young Rock starring Dawyne “The Rock” Johnson. This is Marci’s seventh year as professor and director in the theatre department at the University of West Florida and is currently the president of the Florida Theatre Conference.

Alan Litsey is Chair and Professor of Theatre at Birmingham-Southern College (BSC). He has served SETC in a variety of roles, including two years as President. A playwright, his works have been presented in the Southeast as well as the Edinburgh Festival, Scotland.

He is a member of Actors’ Equity Association. Alan is honored to serve as a responder for the SETC Community Theatre Festival.

Live Arts (Georgia) Written by Simon Stephens, Directed by Rebecca Parker Sea Wall is a delicate monologue, completely devastating and beautifully powerful.

Alex’s story, spoken directly to the audience, encompasses his wife, visiting her father in the South of France, having a daughter, photography, and the bottom of the sea.

His story ultimately falls away into deep and heart-breaking grief, crumbling to pieces with an incredibly moving vividness.

Adjudicators Debbie Corbin is a past president of EdTA, serving from 2017-2019. Before her time on the EdTA board, she served 10 years as Missouri’s Chapter Director for Thespians.

Debbie cares a great deal about theatre education, having taught for 27 years at Branson (Missouri) High School.

Brooke Phillips is the Director of Theatre for Millard West High School. She feels lucky to work with such remarkable individuals in the performing arts. Brooke received “Outstanding Theatre Teacher of the Year” from Nebraska Thespians in 2015 and 2019. Brooke serves as Co-Chapter Director for the Nebraska Thespians Organization, where she works to promote educational theatre across the state and country, supporting both students and teachers. Keith Salter recently retired after teaching secondary theatre for 37 years. Keith’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie received the High School Musical Theatre Awards Best Overall Production award in 2012 and he received the Best Direction By a Teacher award the same year. In 2021, he was the recipient of the Inspiring Teacher Award, both sponsored by HSMTA. Keith can also be seen playing a small role in the 2003 Oscar-nominated film, 21 Grams.

Jason Gerhard, Rhonda Wilson Jason Gerhard and Rhonda Wilson respond to this year’s festival performances.

Jason Gerhard currently works as the Director of Theatre Education for Playhouse on the Square in Memphis, TN and is a member of TYA/USA and AATE. He earned his BFA in Theatre Performance from The University of Memphis and worked on his MFA in Theatre for Young Audiences from the University of Central Florida (thesis pending). At Playhouse, he created the Play Slam! Young Playwrights Competition and Festival. Jason performs with Funny Bones Improv which, pre-COVID, gave monthly performances with St. Jude and other area hospitals. Some credits include: Never Never Land (Director), Heroes, Gods, and Monsters (Creator/Director), Firefly (Creator/Director), Life Amongst the Stars (Writer), and And Then Came Tango (Movement Director). He recently appeared in The Goodbye Levee as part of the Playhouse New Works at The Works series. He is currently working on his solo show, No Chubs, Please, a comedy which explores his struggles through weight loss and dating in the LGBTQ+ community.

Rhonda Wilson is the Founder and Executive Director of the Star Center Theatre in Gainesville, FL. She founded the Star Center without any funding, just a vision and hope. Rhonda is a graduate of the University of Florida and a Middle School Educator. For the past 21 years, she has volunteered her time, energy and resources to the community by using the arts to educate and empower. She understands the need for making space, not only as a Producer/Director/Educator but as a performer who didn’t find many spaces on her journey as an artist. Not only is Rhonda behind the scenes, but an award-winning actress as well. Rhonda has been honored and recognized nationally, statewide, regionally, locally for her perseverance and hard work and even invited to do a TEDx Talk. Rhonda was recently featured in USA Today for her contributions to theater education.

Other recognitions include Excellence In Theatre Education Finalist from The Tony Award And Carnegie Mellon, National Youth Director of the Year (AATE), Allstate National Champion For Good, Sara Spencer Child Drama Award (SETC), Distinguished Career Award, Diversity And Inclusion Award, Governor’s Award For Community Investment in Youth and more. Rhonda’s dream is to continue to provide a platform where everyone can SPARKLE and SHINE!!

The TFY festival strives to highlight, promote and enhance the quality of theatre for young audiences by presenting professional and/or amateur productions that embrace the broadest possible range of genres and styles, and by subsequent adjudication of those productions. The SETC TFY Invitational Festival is a non-competitive exhibition of theatre produced for or by young audiences by companies during the annual Convention.

Over the last quarter century, the TFY Festival has showcased more than one hundred works to more than 25,000 young people. As part of the annual SETC Convention, the festival brings together Artist and Audience, Playwright and Publisher, Performer and Producer to explore the infinite world of Theatre for Youth and to work with and get feedback from some of this country’s preeminent figures in the field.

ANNOUNCING THE NEW

MABEL P. ROBINSON EMERGING ARTIST AWARDS SETC’s most recent award offering is through a partnership with NC Black Rep and the Black Theatre Network. The Mabel P. Robinson Emerging Artists Awards will present six scholarships to acting, directing, and design students (two in each discipline) to attend the 2022 National Black Theatre Festival, the 2023 SETC Convention, and the 2023 Black Theatre Network Conference.

These events introduce students to industry veterans, provide professional experience, and present audition opportunities for graduate schools and summer stock theaters. There will be no application fees.

Auditions/application materials will be submitted virtually, and travel/housing/per diems will be provided.

Applications are now being accepted through Mar. 31, 2022. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and do not need to be currently enrolled in an educational institution.
