REASON REVISITED

“There is no document of culture that is not at the same time a document of barbarism”. Walter Benjamin Considered in broad terms, patterns of comprehending the world work by selecting elements of reality that should merit attention with regard to general purposes. This process of reasoning cannot be reduced to mere intentional selection, but it is imbued with structures that allow for light to be cast on certain aspects of reality while obscuring others. Such schemes of reasoning, however, do not only define that which should be seen, like a filter, but also that which cannot be seen, like a magical cloak of invisibility. This is how entire social groups or countless objects from reality are very often substituted by vague symbols that exclude the particularities of reality, especially connected to forms of domination. The exhibition Fields of Invisibility does not intend merely to provide visibility to those elements that would have otherwise been hidden. What is in question here is the actual mechanism
ci_livreto 16_rev.indd 9

The intentions specified in this project through the eminently procedural works offer a kind of creative deconstruction that echoes Sesc's fundamental mission: that the industry of culture takes on meaning only when permeated by a character of profound inclusion, acting on behalf of the autonomy of the people and the construction of a more democratic society.

What is outside our field of vision does not cease to exist. To open this exhibition with such a statement invites us to reflect on the ecology of problems mobilized by what we shall name here global technological infrastructure. Namely social, economic, technical, symbolic, spiritual, cultural, sexual, political, geographic, environmental aspects, all of which are heavily intricate, and ultimately actualize and give global sequence to preexisting colonial norms and narratives. And in order to perpetuate such narratives, numerous devices, codings, transactions, operations and abstractions are created, while pushing out of our field of vision, reflection, perception and knowledge, all these involved factors. Under this logic, we learned to call the cloud the electronic waste we produce and dump, on the West African coast; the water needed for the cooling of server farms and data servers that store all our information; the wars and the

labor situation in countries like Congo, closely related to the mining focused on the electronics industry; the exploitation and expropriation of land and labor, made by multinational companies in Brazilian lands, especially in the Amazon and Minas Gerais; among many other aspects, agents and localities that compose this chain that taught us to deny, not to see. The perpetuation of this narrative, in contexts traversed by electronic and digital technologies, tends to treat as neutral and universal the knowledge and the body of the subject who writes it. But we know that our worldviews are always constrained, limited like the eyes of algorithmic programmers, computer scientists, big infrastructure engineers, and so on. These end up valuing, visualizing and structuring the operation of technologies and their infrastructures, based on certain knowledge, bodies, cultures, geographies, policies, while excluding others. Facing the fast, intercontinental, generic and antinarrative processing of a Big Data logic, artists situate here, in Sesc Belenzinho, audiovisual and graphic narratives, constituted from specific contexts, such as: La Guajira (Colombia), Agbogbloshie (Ghana), Praia do Futuro, Mariana, Aldeia Rio Silveira, Jaraguá Peak (Brazil), as well as those who emphasize the architectures of their own bodies as the central locus of action,

or even the coexistence with other beings, not only humans. We invite audiences to navigate with us through this set of narratives, which can be read as a counterfield to the contemporary technological environment — extending our perceptual fields beyond what is visible, as form, as interface, as the boundaries of worlds we dwell in. We propose that this be a ritual–path of liberation of certain bewitchments, performing with us new alchemies, and also counter— sorceries.

I have been focusing my attention on territorial and educational issues, since I believe it is through the territorial aspect we may rethink everything. It is not possible to live, to think about culture or spirituality if we do not own our territory, because it is from the forest we get our medicine, it is within the forest all living things are created. So this struggle for territory is an extremely arduous struggle for all leaderships, for all the people of our community. For ten years now, I have, as an educator, been cultivating this message among young people and children: this awakening concerning the care and the attention towards the other beings that also live here. Because, sometimes, when we talk about territory, most people think we are talking about a territory for an specific group of people, but this is not the case: we are thinking about fighting for a territory for all beings — the rivers, the animals, the trees, and so on. And this is a very painful fight, as many leaderships have already disappeared in its name, but it continues. For centuries and centuries, indigenous peoples have been trying to show the Brazilian people, especially our State Governors, the need for respect towards the Earth, towards the forest, but this respect is still not practiced. In that sense, I have focused my efforts towards these aspects, as I feel those are fundamental questions. Another struggle, which I have prioritized for

about two years, came about because of the death of my mother—in—law, who was a great woman (a midwife, a great Guarani female leadership figure), and her husband (who was my father—in—law, who was a great Pajé1). They have awakened my attention concerning the respect for the medicines of the forest, and also towards these spiritual leaders, because in the old days we had no cacique2: the great leaders who showed us the path, with good and beautiful words, were the spiritual leaders. These people that many today call pajés have not been respected to this day. When we think of the strengthening of the territories, we think directly of the spiritual leaders, because they are the ones who show us the path. The journey of the Guarani people, in the past, was given to and revealed by these people through dreams — a vision that there would exist a place where one would live well and find a certain tranquility. I was very touched by these questions within all these stories I’ve heard and, through them, I’ve been fighting to make them visible, to show society the relevance of the spiritual leaders and the forest medicines, because those too have been criminalized, as the tobacco itself. Tobacco is very sacred to the Guarani people: it is through the pipe that the 1 2

healing, cleaning, and the communication with the spiritual world is achieved. And in non—indigenous society today, tobacco is a mixture of chemicals that causes cancer — on the label of these products you see the warnings that they cause cancer. But that is not the case for us, we have much respect to the tobacco, to all the plants that are healing remedies. It turns out that the non—indigenous use the medicines to make money, transforming the coca leaf into cocaine — there are several chemical processes in those lines, but all of them have the same aim, the same purpose: profit. This spreads diseases. Cláudio Bueno — You talk a lot about the relationships with the Earth and, when you deal with the territory, you use a very strong expression: “the rape of the Earth”. Could you elaborate on that? CT — I’ve been reflecting about what is rape and the rape of the Earth for a while, in the sense that, for me, to see a dead river is an extremely heavy reality. Whenever we arrive here in São Paulo, sometimes passing through the Pinheiros river, some places, we feel that strong smell of rotten, dead, lifeless rivers. I always remember a great spiritual leader who said something that I never forgot: our body has veins and blood, and one who suffers from blood circulation problems

will likely suffer a heart attack and die; so the blood that runs through our veins is what gives us life. The Earth has its veins of water, which are the rivers. But men, out of interest, transpose, change, build dams, these various things that change the course of water, and that is a rape. To seize a river and change its direction, without asking if this can be done, this is a great aggression. When I talk about the rape of the Earth it is in this sense, what we are doing to nature, the genetic modification of seeds that become dead seeds, because they do not proliferate or grow, how they use substances to contaminate the land, and so on. I have friends who live in the state of Mato Grosso and they tell me there are days everyone has to run and hide, because airplanes drift through the sky spreading pesticides on the land. This contamination of pesticides, insecticides, the many things they scatter over the soil, it is also a rape, since they wound the Earth, wounds that are sometimes invisible to the eyes, but that we feel. People who have a spiritual connection, who seek this spiritual connection, listen to the beating of the Earth’s heart, especially at night. It is as if the Earth pulsates in a sigh of lamentation, as if it is saying: “I cannot cope with this anymore”. This too I have talked about a lot, and it is during spiritual ceremonies, chanting and dancing rituals that last all night, that suddenly, we all become silent at our
ci_livreto 16_rev.indd 31
10/31/18 4:31 PM

place of worship: then we can only hear the sounds of the forest, of the animals, and the general feeling is that the spirits of the forest are angry — angry and saddened. And even though you, or anyone, may say “Oh, but I’m not guilty of any of that”, we as humans, we are all responsible, and I tell this to my students, because before we did not use disposable diapers, for example, and today many of us do. This rape is a collective rape, in which we all participate, we are part of it. It’s no use for me to say something like “Oh, because I’m a Guarani, I’m out of it.” No! Once I go somewhere and buy something with plastic packaging and throw it somewhere, this bag will end up in a landfill — and landfills are wounds that never heal. Where does our garbage goes? We cause wounds, it clogs the Earth with things that are not useful. So, in my perspective, that would be rape, you know? There are days that I wake up thinking very bitterly: how can we hurt less this powerful mother that is the Earth? And that is a very strong question for me. CB — The other question that you also usually deal with is about Guarani communication. There is much talk about digital communications, communications by technological means, but there are other ways of thinking communication. Could you talk a little bit about this?
ci_livreto 16_rev.indd 33
10/31/18 4:31 PM

CT — The Guarani people are one of the biggest indigenous population here in America, they are present in several states in Brazil and also in Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia. Communication is a very interesting thing. This was deeper before, today it’s diminishing, because there is a lot of noise, a lot of information, but it still exists. The dream, for example, is a very strong form of communication, and sometimes it brings the message of someone who has died or something that will happen or good things as well, a spiritual concentration — as I was saying when I talked about tobacco. There is even a shaman who says that his old cell phone was the petenguá, the pipe you use to smoke tobacco. We do not swallow, just puff. When you release the smoke, it goes, it is an ephemeral smoke, right? In this scatter, you send the information to where you want it to go. Communication was then given spiritually, through thought, concentration, at the time of singing. There were these two modes of communication: through dream and spirituality. This communication was somewhat fragmented with the arrival, for example, of electric light in the villages. This I see very clearly, as a milestone of change. With electricity, many ended up stopping frequenting the house of worship because they had television, a mobile phone. Music, at times, gets in the way. There is, thus, this interference in
ci_livreto 16_rev.indd 35
10/31/18 4:31 PM
Sempre digo

communication. There is, too, another form of communication, because WhatsApp3 is an amazing thing: you send a message to Argentina and it arrives in a second, and by the dream or by petengua it would take a little longer [laughs]. We have the benefits of advanced technology today, it is more scientific, but we must preserve our traditional technology, which is this knowledge... I realize that in the forest, the forest peoples, no matter what people, hold the mysteries of science, of the science of the forest. It is beyond science. The science and technology of the world here is limited, it does not solve our problems. You create a lot of devices to detect a tumor somewhere, when, in fact, it is not even a tumor, it is an accumulation of anguish — and the anguishes is healed with care, with affection, with attention, and this is what you have when you are in a community, in a prayer house, with everyone singing and caring for each other. I believe these technologies and social networks are causing a lot of non-care, a lack of attention for taking proper care of relationships. Relationships are fragmented, distanced, “each in its own square,” and that is a problem. But we have this relationship, this other communication, which is a very beautiful thing, and the older ones have this more present 3

with them, because they are not as close to that scientific technology as we young people are. LN — While discussing the territory and this relationship it has with spirituality, you talk about how the Guaranis have been for centuries in this confrontation with the white people and other ways of life. How does this take place in a territory like São Paulo?
CT — Before talking about São Paulo, I’d like to comment on the Yvyrupá concept. Yvyrupá, translating, it is as if the Earth were one. Yvyrupá, as a concept, is like the bedsheet of the Earth, which sustains the Earth, and the Guarani people believe that the Yvyrupá is the heart of that center of the Earth. In Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, and even in southern Pará we see the Guarani people. All this area constitutes a large communication circuit, as well as a place where different journeys intersect. The Guarani people are people who walk, who do not stop, and even today, having their land granted, it is very common for people to walk from one village to another. Here, in the very state of São Paulo, there is a very large concentration of indigenous Guarani lands (in the Ribeira Valley, on the south coast, on the north coast, in the capital, in the west of São Paulo as well). The Guarani Yvyrupá
ci_livreto 16_rev.indd 39

Commission has published a digital virtual map of the Guarani villages, and this great concentration of indigenous lands is very striking to me when we see it on the aerial map. When you have a view from above, you see that the Atlantic Rainforest is within the areas of indigenous land. On other regions, you hardly see trees, and this calls our attention to something. These people are, even here at the region of Parelheiros, inside the area of forest. In the state of São Paulo we see this question, this rape of the Earth that has occurred — and the Atlantic Forest is a great example of this rape: of the 100% of the Atlantic Forest that existed, today there are less than 7% — and these 7% are in the indigenous areas, preservation parks and quilombola4areas. We see the struggle of the Guarani indigenous lands in the state of São Paulo as a great scream for care and attention for this remaining forest, because if this forest is destroyed completely, it’ll become impossible to live here. The struggle of these people here in São Paulo has further reasons: there is a lot of prejudice too. Today many people arrive at Guarani villages here in the capital, these people see everyone with 4
Quilombola is the word used to name the inhabitants of quilombos, settlements that developed from populations of enslaved African— diasporic black people, who escaped slave plantations throughout the 16—19th century in Brazil

‘normal’ clothes, indigenous people using phones, and so on. Many non-indigenous people will look at this and say: “These are not indigenous people.” These people have that romantic view that indigenous groups should be always naked, feather-adorned individuals of the Amazon basin. Even though things are not like that at the Amazon, you just need to go there and see it yourself. The fight against this prejudice is a struggle, and we try to show to the Brazilian people that in São Paulo there is the Guarani, there is indigenous land and it is because of the existence of this indigenous land that we still have the forest. And the relationship of the forest with the people, for me, is a very deep thing. Hence Alckmin5, who spent many years in the government of São Paulo, now comes up with the idea of privatizing the state parks, aiming at economic interest, of course. Can he not see that it is where there are parks that life exists? We saw this, this privatization of the parks, as an aggression, an arrow in the heart, because we are affected by it directly. If they are really privatized one day, most indigenous lands areas will overlap with the private parks’ areas, posing a serious threat to our territories.

CB — And, by the way, could you comment a little on what was the occupation of the Jaraguá Peak6?
45
CT — The occupation of the Jaraguá Peak was something truly incredible. I’d like to briefly recall the Acampamento Terra Livre of 2017, which was very strong too, as, at the time, we were dealing with several massacres, especially the Guarani Kaiowá, who are also close relatives. There was a demonstration with black coffins, which were thrown at the entrance of the Brazilian Congress. This generated a very violent reaction — tear gas bombs, police; we were coerced so violently that we wondered, “How could they do that?”. We were performing an act, and public acts are allowed — we no longer have state enforced censorship in Brazil, and if there is democracy, there should be freedom of speech and respect for people’s pain. But that does not exist. When I came back from the Acampamento in 2017, I was even more touched by this situation, of how there is no respect. And then it began, at the end of 2017, several demonstrations at the Paulista Avenue, and then this stronger occupation there at the land of the Jaragua Peak. When there are occupations, communication between the 6

villages is very strong, and people arrive suddenly — we find a way to get buses, transportation, and numerous supporters from different places come to add force to our fight, even if some of them are not from the village. This union is very beautiful. We saw more and more people arriving, and the feeling was exciting; we stopped and cried with emotion, seeing that movement. First, when it happened at the Paulista Avenue7, the feeling was that we were dominating that space, with all those businessmen, dressed up, passing by and watching those people drumming in front of the Presidency building. I felt, seeing all that people, old people and children walking, as if we were submerging into that space and making those chants resonate through the avenue the whole night. That really moved us. Then it came to us the idea of occupying the tower, because the negotiations were not yet in progress. I was not in the tower itself, but I followed everything through messages, the people that were up there said that the feeling was of power even, “now you dominate this state,” because you dominate what moves those people. Everyone wakes up and picks up their cell phone to check messages; and suddenly everything goes off — 7
The Paulista Avenue (Avenida Paulista) is one of the most relevant Avenues in the city of São Paulo. It serves as a cultural, social and financial epicenter that stretches 2.8km (1.7mi)

television, internet, all this media? People would enter into a collective outbreak of technological abstinence, which is a very powerful thing. For a few moments, then, we experienced this feeling of thinking how fragile and dependent people are. This dependence is what generates depression, to get too attached to a communication that leads nowhere, such as television, for example. People watch Faustão8 and these ridiculous programs that only speak nonsense, and that only induces consumption and stops them from seeing the rape of the Earth. This feeling during the occupation was very strong, to show this to the people and even to Brazil. I will not say that this is restricted to São Paulo, because these news ran several states, had an impact and showed that there are indigenous people in São Paulo, that there is indigenous land in the capital that generates the entire financial circuit of the country. For us, for a short time, this empowerment occurred, we could say that we were there, resisting, re-existing — because you have to reinvent the way of being when you are coerced in a territory that is not allowed to breathe. Incidentally, the people of the village live on the edge of the highway — a murderous highway, by 8

the way. Earlier this year, a young girl died, my husband’s niece, who was hit by a vehicle on the highway close to the Jaraguá. Many people died on that road; and there are several complicated situations involving that indigenous land, because it is so close to the city. In that sense, these movements of occupation are screams of resistance.
CB — What have you been thinking about this idea of development? If we think that development during the dictatorship killed more than 8,000 indigenous people... CT — So, thinking about this development issue, I shall start at the Brazilian flag, because its sayings Order and Progress are aimed at the development of our country. And many people see this word, development, as a positive thing, “sustainable development”. During Rio + 20 much has been said about green economy and sustainable development, but this is a contradictory term — it does not exist. Because being sustainable is not developing, it is getting involved with space so that space is sustained and expanded. It’s very interesting, this reflection of involving and developing. The military dictatorship is a crucial moment in the country’s history, and the history books

emphasize the exiles of Caetano, Chico9, all these famous people, but do not speak of the exile of the indigenous peoples. There were concentration camps; during the military dictatorship, in Minas Gerais, in the villages of the Krenak and the Maxacali, there were prisons in which these people were trained to torture their own relatives who were willing to confront the government in other regions. In the State of São Paulo, some indigenous lands were created during the dictatorship, a mixture of Krenak with Kaingangs. Kaingangs are southerners, the Krenak are from Minas Gerais, and the Terena from Mato Grosso do Sul; and they were all thrown there in a totally disorderly manner, which generated conflict. I saw the military dictatorship as a moment when the government had development in its head in a frantic, violent, overwhelming way; but this story is not well told, not even at the universities. I have conversations with teachers and university history students who are unaware of the real History of Brazil, and they should do this reflection on the development and involvement during the historical process of our country. CB and LN — It’s wonderful to be able to count on all that you’re telling us about. We’ll dare ask 9

CB e LN — Obrigado.

if it would be possible to record a song of yours to the Earth that can echo during the three months of the exhibition?

CT — There is a song that I find very powerful, it says: “Give it back, give back our land, so we can continue to live in tranquility” That’s it: give it back, give us back our land, so that we can continue to live in peace and happiness. Truthfully, we all need the land to live in peace and happiness. So this is the our reflection, this is our struggle. CB and LN — Thank you. CT — I thank you too. I find this dialogue so important, to expand these dialogues, specially by means of the art. Artists are those who give more attention to the cause, in a way. The scientists, poor things, they are a little bit lost within their own reasoning, which takes them nowhere, but I can see that the art field is very large, that it must be appreciated more. Because art can touch the heart of people, unlike science.

Encounter 11.07.2018 6:30PM—10PM Local Sala de Espetáculos 2 Sesc Belenzinho, São Paulo This encounter brings together a wide range of knowledges, which are articulated at this crossroads of “Fields of Invisibility”. Keller Easterling investigates infrastructural spatial technologies in the global political landscape in the 21st century, and “medium design” as an agent of potentials and relationships in everyday spaces. Déborah Danowski problematizes the phenomena of denialism in the face of violence and ecological and human catastrophes. Tabita Rezaire reconnects us with our body, the earth and the multiverse, as a decolonization of technologies, from African and indigenous perspectives. Faced with visible and invisible violent homogenization, these three practices and positions expand the present, celebrating the coexistence of heterogeneous worlds and temporalities.

DENIALISMS The mysterious cognitive, mental and politic paralysis of our society in the face of the perspective of ecological disaster forecasted by the current scientific community as a consequence of global warming can be illuminated by comparison with the Holocaust denial phenomenon perpetrated by Nazi Germany in the last century, and our indifference to the practices of mass rearing, confinement, and mass extermination of animals in agribusiness factoryfarms. The talk will seek to justify the use of these terms, denialism and Holocaust, for these three historical events — despite, or precisely because of, the great sensitivity they arouse for various reasons. Déborah Danowski is a professor at the Graduate Program in Philosophy at PUC—Rio and a researcher at CNPq. A scholar of modern metaphysics, in recent years she has devoted herself to issues of political ecology and of the global environmental catastrophe. Among her publications in this field are O hiperrealismo das mudanças climáticas e as várias faces do negacionismo [The hyperrealism of climate change and the various faces of denialism] (2012); καταστροφή: the end and the beginning (2012); The Ends of the World (2014, with Eduardo Viveiros de Castro); and Um mundo vivo (about the Encyclical Laudato Si’) (in press, 2018).

Outros livros incluem: Enduring Innocence — Global Architecture and Its Political Masquerades (MIT, 2005) e Organization Space: Landscapes, Highways, and Houses in America (MIT, 1999).

MEDIUM DESIGN At a moment of digital ubiquity, it may be easier to treat the data from digital platforms as primary in contemporary innovation and to believe that, if coated with sensors in an internet of things, the stiff, dumb world will suddenly become responsive and “smart.” But the heavy lumpy components of space are themselves information systems that don’t really need digital devices to make them dance. So, since architecture and urbanism are making radical changes to the globalizing world, space may be an underexploited medium of innovation. Like those media theorists who are returning to elemental understandings of media as surrounding environments of air, water, or earth, medium design uses a spatial medium to rehearse this habit of mind and prompt innovative thought about both spatial and non-spatial problems. TABITA REZAIRE

DECOLONIAL HEALING: TECHNOLOGY, SPIRITUALITY AND THE EROTIC How can we holistically connect to ourselves, to one another, to the earth and to the multiverse? To reclaim agency over our channels of information and communication, Tabita Rezaire digs into African, Diasporic and Indigenous scientific knowledge, unearthing possibilities for spiritual technologies. As we yearn for emotional, spiritual, political, historical and technological healing, she retrieves a cybernetic spacetime to feed an organic-tech-spirit consciousness. From communicating with ancestors to embracing water, the womb and teacher plants as portals for downloading knowledge, here is a call to decolonise our technologies. Tabita Rezaire is an artist-storyteller working with screens and energy streams. Her cross-dimensional practice envisions network sciences — organic, electronic and spiritual — as healing technologies to serve the shift towards heart consciousness. Navigating architectures of power, she digs into scientific imaginaries to tackle the pervasive matrix of coloniality and the protocols of energetic misalignment that affect the songs of our bodiesminds-spirits. Tabita is based in Cayenne, French Guyana.

All that was spoken to you about the cloud was a lie: it is not immaterial. Agbogbloshie, near Ghana’s capital Accra, receives daily tons of electronic waste, mostly from Europe. Servers, which move the flow of data and capital, are accommodated in the basements of modern buildings located in large urban financial centers, such as New York. Optical fiber submarine cables structure telecommunications globally, replicating maritime routes of exploration of life and land, actualizing colonialism, now, too, digital and electronic. In 2018, Angola Cables started the Sacs (South Atlantic Cable System). In Fortaleza is where submarine cables arrive in Brazil, which connect us digitally with the world. The droughtprone state of Ceará will also use water to cool clouds, or, more specifically, servers and data hubs located on the so-called New Beach of the Future.

LOUIS HENDERSON Inglaterra, 1983

ALL THAT IS SOLID, 2014 Video 15’26” Courtesy of the artist and Spectre Productions Technological “advances” in the West have generated huge stacks of obsolete computers, pushed out of the field of view of large global centers. The so-called e-waste is sent largely to the West African coast, in junkyards like Agbogbloshie in Accra, Ghana. When it arrives, this waste is recovered by men, who break and burn the carcasses to extract the precious metals that are contained inside these computers. Eventually the metal parts are sold, melted and transformed into new objects for resale. It is a strange recycling system, a kind of neocolonial reverse mining, in which Africans are searching for mineral resources in materials coming from Europe. Louis Henderson currently resides between France and the United Kingdom. As a filmmaker, he tries to find ways of working that question the current global condition, defined by racist capitalism and historical marks still present in the European colonial project. His method of work is archaeological. He has presented his work at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the Center Pompidou (Paris), Tate Britain (London), among other institutions, shows and festivals.

TABITA REZAIRE

DEEP DOWN TIDAL, 2017 Video installation 18’ Courtesy of the artist and the Goodman Gallery, South Africa In this work, the artist talks about the internet and its concreteness in the form of thousands of kilometers of optical fiber cables located at the bottom of the oceans. These are infrastructural telecommunication cables. Amidst the waves of the sea, our lives — its wireless counterpart and the cloud — are tied to physical cables. Between submerged cities, drowned navigators and hidden stories, the ocean has become the land of a complex web of stories and communications. In this context, telecommunications, controlled mainly by the West, expand through old colonial routes, making it so these cables are the hardware manifestation of a new electronic and digital imperialism. Tabita Rezaire is the infinity embodied in this time of life as a French agent — of Guianese and Danish descent — of the cure. She uses the arts and sciences as healing technologies to serve the shift toward the consciousness of the heart. Navigating power architectures — mentally, online and offline — her work attacks the pervasive matrix of coloniality, the protocol of energy misalignment, and its effects on our bodies-minds-spirits. She is particularly interested in the spaces-times of life in which technology and spirituality intersect.

LANDING MONET, 2017 Video 05’30” To be present at a submarine cable docking ceremony is to witness the material connection of nations and worlds. These are events that involve great political and economic celebrations and speeches, based on the notion of development and progress. In the video presented, the artist invites the public to witness the official ceremony of the arrival of the “Monet” cable, in Fortaleza — marked by a certain staging, due to the climatic impossibility of docking the cable on the scheduled date. And as the slogan of submarine cable companies spreads, it is “the arrival of the future at Praia do Futuro (which literally translates into Beach of the Future)”. Ruy Cézar Campos is an artist-researcher, creating works inspired by themes such as media and network archeology, sensorial ethnography, affectivities around infrastructure and displacement. He has a bachelor degree in Audiovisual and New Media (2015, Unifor), Master of Arts (2018, UFC — Funcap Fellow) at the Art and Process Creation: Contemporary Poetics program, and PhD in Communication, Technologies of Communication and Culture (UERJ).

THE DIFFERENCE, 1981 Installation. 7 x 2,5 x 4,7m Acknowledgments: Galeria Marília Razuk and Inês Raphaelian The installation The Difference can be seen as a criticalsynthesis of the thinking of Julio Plaza, through which he questions the means, process, production, market, authorship, criticism, institution and everything that involves art and culture in the circumstances in which it takes place. In the context of this exhibition, his critique approaches works that emphasize notions of developmentalism and major infrastructural works, in countries marked by the notions of “the global”. The artist landed in Brazil for the first time in 1967 for the 10th São Paulo Biennial and remained in Rio de Janeiro until 1969 at ESDI. With a research of strong conceptual character and a semiotic approach to art, Plaza, with all his work and his investigations in the field of art and technology, left a mark on generations of artists that were influenced by his educational related activities in the center for visual arts Aster, at ECA—USP (School of Communications and Arts, University of São Paulo), at FAAP (Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation), at (PUC—SP) Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo and at Unicamp (State University of Campinas).

FRAGMENTS ON MACHINE, 2013 Video 17’ This work confronts us with the physicality and materiality of the internet. This network, which is imagined in abstract terms, is presented concretely from the subsoil of New York buildings. The film looks at the transformations of city architecture to accommodate material connections that attest to the physicality of a world that calls itself “virtual”. In New York there are monumental buildings, symbols of the industrial capitalism of the XIXth and XXth century. It is significant that a large number of these buildings today contain the infrastructure of the internet and of the global capital, housing servers and computers that put into circulation the post-industrial financial capitalism. Emma Charles is an artist based in London. She works with photography, sound and moving image, articulated within the fields of architecture, digital cultures, media archeology, economics and temporality. Her work uses both analog and digital formats. Versed in the documental structural language, her work customarily lays in the blurred boundaries between fiction and documentary.

WHITE MOUNTAIN, 2016 Video 20’56” White Mountain is a documentary-fiction film about the Pionen data center. Located in a former Cold War civil defense bunker, it was redesigned by the architect Albert Frances-Lanord in 2008, making it a data center that hosted servers such as WikiLeaks’ and The Pirate Bay’s. Located 30 meters under the granite rocks of the Vita Bergen Park in Stockholm, this underground data center was designed with direct references to science fiction films such as Douglas Trumbull’s Silent Running (1972). Playing with the aesthetics of science fiction, White Mountain reveals different possible temporalities, by exploring both geological and data spaces.

“Seven falls have passed through me, And all seven have faded away. The crash of the waterfalls ceases, and with it The memory of the Indians, pulverized, No longer does it cause us the smallest shiver. To the dead Spanish, to the dead troopers, To the faded fires Of Ciudad Real de Guaira will join the seven ghosts of the waters murdered by the hand of men, the owner of this planet. [...] And it is undone by ungrateful intervention of technocrats. No water, no data. No coal, no data. The extraction of oil, the damming of rivers, the production and export of coal to rich countries: everything is blackout. Everything is the “rape of the earth”. Everything is de—development 1 (not getting involved). All of which is the life of some and death of others, as of the Rivers.
1
The Portuguese word used in the original text here is ‘des— envolvimento’, a word play where the prefix ‘des’ is cut from its root ‘envolvimento’. ‘Desenvolvimento’ means precisely ‘development’, while ‘envolvimento’ means ‘to be engaged or involved in something’. By separating the prefix from the root, we get ‘des—envolvimento’: to develop while getting increasingly disengaged, uninvolved.

A GENTE RIO, 2016 Video 30’, drawings and photographs with different dimensions A Gente Rio (2016), produced for the 32nd Biennial of Arts of São Paulo, on display at this show, deals with the life implied in rivers and on its banks. The work is made up of different elements, such as satellite photo montages of the Itaipu (PR) and Belo Monte (PA) hydroelectric plants, and before and after the environmental disaster caused by the dam failure at the Bento Rodrigues dam (Mariana, MG); a video, made by Caycedo in those regions; and drawings, which tell the narratives of the rivers Yuma (Colombia), Yaqui (Mexico), Elwha (USA), Watu, known as Rio Doce and Iguaçu (Brazil) as living entities endowed with stories. This work is part of a larger project titled A Gente Rio—Be Dammed (2016) Carolina Caycedo focuses her practice on the discussion of contexts impacted by major infrastructural works of developmental character. In her recent research, she analyzes the environmental and social damages related to the construction of dams and the control of natural water courses. Through the involvement with groups and communities affected by these transformations, the artist investigates ideas of flow, assimilation, resistance, representation, control, nature and culture.

MUSEUM OF OIL, 2016—2018 Vídeo, Photographic Installation, UV printing. Museum of Oil is a new institution that demands that oil is kept on its land reserves. The difficult, constantly growing understanding of human impacts on the earth system leads the Territorial Agency to a simple gesture, a demand: let’s keep oil inside the earth. The accomplishment of this work seeks to delineate and record the enlargement of the oil industry in the world, and the consequent unsustainability and fragility of the territories affected by it. Museum of Oil collects information, items, objects, and data on the various forms through which we can keep oil in the subsoil up to the end of the so-called developmental combustion binge. Territorial Agency is an independent organization that promotes and works in an innovative way to carry out sustainable territorial transformations. It is committed to strengthening the capacity of local and international communities in the management and understanding of spatial transformations. Its projects provide space resources for the full potential development of these territories. It works in the establishment of instruments and methods to guarantee greater urban and architectural quality in contemporary territories.

COAL FOR YOUR EYES TO TOUCH, 2017 Video installation 30’, three channels In this video-installation, the artist deals with the materiality of mineral coal and its flow of contamination between the Cerrejón mine in La Guajira (Colombia), and a thermoelectric and steel plant in Ceará (Brazil). Three videos present images of the industrial and infrastructural landscapes in the two countries, as well as testimonies of people affected by coal, both in the Brazilian Northeast and in the Colombian Caribbean. Coal is now a major energy source in many parts of the world and is often used in data server cooling. In view of the environmental problems caused by its production, coal production is usually outsourced to countries of the so-called “global south”. He had his works exhibited at Videoarte festivals and exhibitions around the world.

DENIALISMS, 2018 Audio conference 40” The mysterious cognitive, mental and politic paralysis of our society in the face of the perspective of ecological disaster forecasted by the current scientific community as a consequence of global warming can be illuminated by comparison with the Holocaust denial phenomenon perpetrated by Nazi Germany in the last century, and our indifference to the practices of mass rearing, confinement, and mass extermination of animals in agribusiness factoryfarms. Among her publications in this field are O hiperrealismo das mudanças climáticas e as várias faces do negacionismo [The hyperrealism of climate change and the various faces of denialism] (2012); καταστροφή: the end and the beginning (2012); The Ends of the World (2014, with Eduardo Viveiros de Castro); and Um mundo vivo (about the Encyclical Laudato Si ‘)” (in press, 2018).

Observing the bacterial colonies that form the grains, kefir can show us different communication models, different from those we know, based on independence, consensus and trust, analogue to the infrastructural and technological logic of the Blockchain. DAISY RING or DAISY CHAIN: inspired by daisies, it is known in the field of electric and electronic as a kind of sequential chain of wires that connects different devices in a chain.

CARTAS DO VIDENTE, 2013 Vídeo 40’ Cortesia do artista e Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporains.

LETTRES DU VOYANT [LETTERS FROM THE SEER], 2013 Video 40’ Courtesy of the artist and Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporains. Not recommended for minors under 18. Lettres du Voyant is a documentary-fiction on spiritism and technology in contemporary Ghana. It reflects upon a mysterious practice called Sakawa — internet scams mixed with voodoo magic, in which its practitioners promise to recover everything that was historically stolen from them. Retelling the conmen’s stories from the time of Ghanaian independence, the film proposes Sakawa as a form of anticolonial resistance. The title of this work is eponymous to the way in which literary criticism named the two letters of Arthur Rimbaud, written in 1871, against western poetry and claiming a new poetic tradition.

KABILA ARUANDA Brasil, 1970

EXISTENCE/RESISTANCE, 2018 Video—Animation, Photographic drawing reproduction, cotton paper, inkjet printing, A3 format In this work, the scratched points are ephemeral ideographic inscriptions, scratched on the floor, on bodies and other platforms. Mediators between the sacred and the human, between the visible and the invisible, these cosmograms (from the Kongo and Yoruba peoples) have become the multiple modes of existence of the African diaspora in Brazil. As the artist and babalorixá Kabila Aruanda of the Free Nation Aruanda puts it, “the scratched points are like a map that was traced through the transcription of constellations. Each scratched point carries within itself an attacking, defending or warning force. “In this ritual exposition, the gesture provides the vibration of the black caboclos, as a breakup and search for justice and help, and a statement of freedom. Kabila Aruanda is a multimedia artist, babalorixá, costume designer, stylist, consultant and artistic director. He created a singular way of life, called “Aruanda Way of Life”, from the “Free Aruanda Nation” terreiro, in Cotia, São Paulo — a place of free ritualization for the worship of the orixás. In collaboration with his yaos, he created the Usina de Alegria Planetária ⁄ UAP, a collective that brings together architects, designers, artists, educators and researchers, promoting the free creation, production and management of artistic projects aimed at sustainable reinsertion and transformation of materials, subjects and their environments.

UNTITLED, 2018 Drawings printed on cotton paper, inkjet. Sample of bacterial colony in glass plate 10x10cm This series of diagrams reflect upon the technologies of communication between beings, not solely based on the human model. By these means, the artist studies the communication between bacteria, and its relations of independence, consensus and trust; relations that are also present at the infrastructural logic of the Blockchain. As an experimental field, the artist presents a glass petri dish with 10cm in diameter containing a Kefir sample, which is fed by the artist’s saliva. The artist, then, establishes herself as the 28th specie within this realm of 27 different types of bacteria. This work reflects upon: technology, the body, communication, infrastructure, life and death on earth today. Rita Wu is a designer and artist. She has been working with digital technologies since 2008 and, as an enthusiast of everything involving living things, currently deals with synthetic biology and biohacking. Interdisciplinary by nature and indiscipline by choice, she is a founding member of the first Fab Lab of Brazil, with headquarters in FAU—USP (Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, University of São Paulo).

VISUALIZATIONS OF THE WORLD
161
Real-time airplanes in airspace, real-time ocean maps of moving ships at the sea, real time financial charts at the São Paulo Stock Exchange, maps of submarine cables, maps of abandoned mines: they are all concrete testimonies of the functioning of the present world. They point us different perspectives to bring us to think on the notions of geography, ecology, politics, surveillance, knowledge, sovereignty and other subjects that orbit the current technological ecology. Like other infrastructures, everything operates invisible, such as water or electricity. It is only when they fail that we notice their existence negatively. And if the technology infrastructure fails, we fail. These are systems anchored between the physicality of data centers and their updates on our own body and our experience with the world. They are concatenations of procedurally chained systems, be they financial, ecological, educational, psychological, biological, and so on.
