2020 CENSUS: A COMPLETE COUNT FOR HUDSON COUNTY My division was charged with leading up outreach for the 2020 Census. Having successfully secured a grant from the Department of State, I have spent most of late 2019 and 2020 producing and regularly cranking out materials for print and digital distribution.

Working directly with advertisers, vendors, event coordinators, and media, my objective is to keep our branding as consistent as possible while continually tweaking our message to meet real time response data. In addition to these graphics, I produced multiple video commercials which aired on streaming services in the County.

The Division of Parks has long been offering maps to park users looking for more information about the park system. When the opportunity arose to update park maps to reflect several years of capital projects, I decided to overhaul the existing maps in favor of a more streamlined approach. These maps are designed so they would be legible in any color, including black and white. I love presenting ideas spatially. I believe if you can influence the way people navigate space, you can influence the way they feel about a place.

The defining feature of Laurel Hill Park is Laurel Hill, an igneous rock mass formed by volcanic action.

Though largely obliterated by past quarrying, it is 150 feet high and can be seen from around the region. The Hackensack River forms the western border of the park. Recreational amenities include a playground, baseball, football, soccer, and cricket fields, a kayak launch, and picnic areas. An elevated boardwalk allows visitors to walk along the Hackensack River. The park has ample parking, and the Frank R Lautenberg Station which serves multiple NJ transit rail lines is a short walk from the park. Visitors can enjoy waterfront views and enjoy themselves at the park’s many recreational facilities.

Lincoln Park East is home to numerous recreational facilities, children’s play areas, historic monuments, and groves of mature trees. The park was designed in 1905 as “West Side Park” by landscape architects Charles Lowrie and Daniel W. Langston.

The entrance to the park features the “Lincoln the Mystic,” a seated statue sculpted by James Earle Fraser and dedicated in 1930. The park also features a 53 foot high fountain completed in 1911, and historic sun house gazebos. Recreational amenities include a playground, spray ground, tennis, basketball, and handball courts, baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer fields, an artificial surface multipurpose field, a running track, and a cross-country course. The park is served by the NJ Transit 1 and 80 buses which run along West Side Avenue, and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail West Side Avenue station is less than a mile away.

West Hudson Park spreads out over 46 acres. The park dates back to 1888, however, Hudson County’s bond purchase for the land was not approved until November 1902, and additional construction was begun in 1910. West Hudson Park’s major highlight is the 2-acre Fairy Lake. The park includes several scenic bridges, and 4 miles of pathways winding through scenic groves of trees. Recreational amenities include a playground, spray ground, tennis and basketball courts, soccer, softball, and baseball fields, and a picnic area. The park is served by the NJ Transit 30 bus which runs along Kearny Avenue, and the 40 bus which runs along Davis Avenue. West Hudson Park is a beautiful space to relax and picnic in a scenic green refuge in western Hudson County.

As the 106-year-old 14th Street Viaduct was replaced in Hoboken, the County improved the land under the bridge with a new park. Vibrant LED lighting, decorative paving, landscaping, and new sports facilities and play areas have provided recreational space for residents in the northwest corner of the city and visitors from around the County. Recreational amenities include a playground, dog run, basketball court, and two small soccer practice areas. The park is served by the NJ Transit 22, 23, 89, and 126 buses which run along 14th Street and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Ninth Street station is a short distance away. The replacement of the viaduct has now transformed this underutilized space into an attractive amenity for the residents of northwest Hoboken.

Lincoln Park West has many natural features along the Hackensack River waterfront. Nature trails cross through groves of trees, around a pond, and wind through a restored wetland along the Hackensack River. It also includes Hudson County’s only public golf course. Additional recreational amenities include baseball fields and a dog run. Accessible by bridges over Routes 1 & 9, the park is served by the NJ Transit 1 and 80 buses which run along West Side Avenue, and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail West Side Avenue station is less than a mile away. Lincoln Park West offers scenic views of the Hackensack River for nature lovers watching migrating birds in the restored wetlands or golfers teeing off at the Skyway Golf Course.

Named for Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer, the site of Mercer Park was originally part of Curries Woods on the border of Jersey City and Bayonne. Remaining largely undeveloped before the turn of the century, local residents would flock to this area to enjoy the natural scenery and relax.

The historic Morris Canal was the border between the two municipalities, running along the northern and eastern sections of the park. The park’s development was achieved through Works Progress Administration (WPA), which provided funds to employ local residents to work on the park. Its 6 ½ acres offer walkways to stroll through the greenery and shady resting and picnic spots amongst the trees. Recreational amenities include a playground, basketball courts, and a multi-use field. The park is served by the NJ Transit 10 and 119 buses which run along John F. Kennedy Boulevard, and the 6 and 81 buses which stop on Merritt Street a block south of the park.

James J. Braddock Park, at the northern border of Hudson County, was established as North Hudson Park in 1910. The park was renamed to honor local resident James J. Braddock, the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion from 1935 to 1937, who was an inspiration to the people of the area during the Great Depression. He was recently honored with a statue on the park’s 100th anniversary. The 167 acre park also features the historic former Superintendent building, and the 16 acre Woodcliff Lake. Braddock Park includes nature trails which wind through groves of trees, and relaxing picnic areas.

Shared by Union City and Jersey City, Washington Park offers open space where these two cities meet. Washington Park was originally the site of a fairground where visiting carnivals and circuses were staged. In the early 1900s, a park association was founded with a mission to establish a county park on the site. The organization raised dues and petitioned the County for years for creation of a park. Finally, in 1917, the land acquisition agreement Washington Park was finalized.

The park is served by the NJ Transit 22, 84, 85, 86, 88, 119, and 123 buses which run along the streets bordering the park, and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Ninth Street station is a short distance away. Visitors can enjoy green, passive areas and amazing views of the NYC skyline.

Established in 1916, Stephen R. Gregg Park was renamed in honor of life-long Bayonne resident, Stephen R. Gregg, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his courageous service during World War II. Recreational amenities include a large playground, a spray ground, baseball, softball, soccer, and football fields, a track, basketball, tennis, and bocce courts, and a horseshoe pit. A walkway around the western edge of the park allows visitors to enjoy the Hackensack River waterfront. The park is served by the NJ Transit 10 and 119 buses which run along John F. Kennedy Boulevard.

In the center of the City of Hoboken, Columbus Park has been a place to play and relax for over a century. Designed by noted landscape architect Charles N. Lowrie who served as the Hudson County Parks Department architect, the architectural focus of Columbus Park is a pavilion referred to as the “sun house,” an ornatelydesigned 100-year-old gazebo with an adjacent sunken garden. Recreational amenities include a playground, spray ground, basketball, tennis, bocce, and shuffleboard courts. The park is served by the NJ Transit 126 bus which runs along Clinton Avenue, and the Ninth/Congress Street Station of the Hudson Bergen Light Rail is a quarter mile west of the park. With its rich history, Columbus Park stands as one of the many landmarks of Hoboken.

YOUR UPTOWN While pursing my undergrad degree, I participated in a cooperative eduction program, allowing me to spend every other semester working full-time as a planner. I spent two semesters as an Economic Development Intern at Uptown Consortium, a non-profit local development corporation founded by some of the largest employers in the Cincinnati area. In 2016, I supported Uptown Consortium’s launch of a new “shop local” mission called “Your Uptown”.

I curated a bi-weekly newsletter that was received by residents, visitors, and employees of Uptown’s five neighborhoods. I assigned each newsletter a theme related to the season or a greater mission of the organization.

Regularly met with business and restaurant owners, I kept listings up to date on our Wordpress site, and offered on-the-ground marketing materials.

UPTOWN CROSSING

I became so invested so in the area that I decided to make my capstone project about the Innovation Corridor, a mixed-use development supporting Uptown’s medical, research and innovation industries.

YEAR IN REVIEW Although the last time the Division of Planning produced an annual report was 2013, I developed a Biennial Review of the 2016-2018 activities of the Division. In a twelve-page document, I illustrate who we are, what we’ve been doing, and how well we’ve been doing it.

OPEN SPACE TRUST FUND

The County Open Space, Recreation, & Historic Preservation Trust Fund allows a municipal tax levy for the purposes of acquisition and development of open space, historic preservation, and park improvements. The Division of Planning oversees the management of this grant. As Assistant Planner, my role includes communicating with applicants, preparing the annual recommendations report, presenting to the Open Space Advisory Board, and documenting construction updates. HOBOKEN DONATION METER Working within the confines of the City of Hoboken’s branding guidelines, I designed signage and instructive material for one of the City’s homelessness initiatives.

A partnership between United Way of Hudson County and the City allows residents to donate loose change in orange parking meters throughout the mile-square city.

100% of the donations collected by the new meters are administered by the United Way, and will directly benefit Hoboken homelessness initiatives.

The concept was inspired by the City of Pasadena, CA (pictured right). I provided several color and design options to the city (pictured below).
