Based on John Charles Olmsted’s 1903 plan to transform what was then the infantry encampment Fort Lawton into a public park to anchor the system of undulating boulevards and green spaces Olmsted designed for Seattle, the 1972 Discovery Park Master Plan by notable landscape architect Dan Kiley (1912-2004) preserves the wild meadows and forests of Magnolia Bluff. Celebrated for his collaborations with modernist architects (including I.M. Pei, Eero Saarinen, and Louis Kahn), Kiley brought decorum and restraint to his subtractive design for the park and allowed the spectacular natural landscape to reveal itself from cunningly sited clearings and vantage points.

Stewardship of the Land. Discovery Park’s genesis and history are intertwined with community organizing and volunteerism. Citizens for a Fort Lawton Park (founded 1968) successfully agitated against continued military use of the land. Its successor, Friends of Discovery Park, through education, fundraising and conservation, actively protects Kiley’s vision for the park. By contrast to the transient armed services divisions once stationed here, the army of volunteers marshaled by Friends of Discovery Park is rooted in community.
