Mellow Wedgwood

Inhabited since the last glacial age 10,000 years ago by native Duwamish peoples who hunted and traveled through dense forest, the area in northeast Seattle we know as Wedgwood was settled in the 1870s by Civil War veterans with land claims, then by waves of Swedish, German and Italian immigrants. Logging and subsequent drainage of peat bogs revealed fertile soil that supported a ginseng farm and later Seattle’s first P-Patch (P for the Picardo family who farmed the area until 1965).

The vibrant commercial district along 35th Ave NE, which now includes supermarkets, drugstores, banks, a US Post Office, churches, synagogues, taverns, bakeries and cafes, sprang up in the 1920s, but it was not until World War II that the area was fully developed, as housing for defense workers. The pleasantly sleepy, quasi-suburban atmosphere of Wedgwood has always coexisted with a spirit of neighborhood engagement and activism.

Wedgwood was named for the distinguished English bone china beloved of pioneering developer Albert Balch’s wife, Edith. Like the eponymous porcelain, it is often misspelled as “Wedgewood.”
