HOW IT WORKS

TIPS FOR A GREAT CONVERSATION

HOW IT WORKS This is a conversation exploring the status quo, who it benefits, how we challenge it, and how we fuel the fire within to build the Beloved Community. Together we’ll explore three big questions that take us on a journey of shared learning.

No one is expected to be an expert, but everyone is invited to participate by sharing their experience and ideas. Your table facilitator will lead each round of questions and ensure everyone has an opportunity to share.

REMINDERS BE CURIOUS + WILLING TO LEARN

Conversation is as much about listening as it is about talking. Listen and be open to hearing all points of view.

BE MINDFUL AND SHOW RESPECT Conversations encourage vulnerability. Be mindful of people’s privacy and acknowledge their bravery. What is said here stays here, what is learned here leaves here.

LIVED EXPERIENCE Be respectful of those with lived experience. Avoid tokenizing them or putting an undue burden on them by asking them to educate or explain. Let them take the lead with how much they want to share.

SUSPEND JUDGEMENTS + ASSUMPTIONS Setting judgments aside opens you up to learning from others and helps them feel respected and appreciated. Rather than making assumptions, listen and ask questions to better understand who another person is and where they are coming from.

BE AUTHENTIC + WELCOMING Speak authentically from your personal experience. Personal stories open our hearts. Look for common ground and appreciate the differences in the beliefs and opinions of others.

CONVERSATION GUIDE

3 BIG QUESTIONS

INTROS

QUESTION 1

CREATED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

Share your name, how long you’ve lived in Atlanta, and give a toast to someone who has challenged the status quo or sparked good trouble.

Just like a flame reveals what’s hidden in the dark, our anger and passion can bring awareness to injustice all around us that may otherwise go overlooked. Describe a time when you experienced or witnessed a moment of injustice where you thought - “That’s not right. That’s not fair.” What new awareness or truth came to you?

QUESTION 2

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke out fearlessly for building the beloved community, even amongst hatred, and even though doing so put him and his family’s lives at risk. You could say his fire within burned brighter than the fire around him. How does the current status quo impact you, for better or worse? What fears hold you back from leading change within your community?

QUESTION 3

In his book ‘Where Do We Go from Here?’, Dr. King warns against the peril of complacency. He writes…“One of the great liabilities of history is that all too many people fail to remain awake through great periods of social change. Every society has its protectors of the status quo and its fraternities of the indifferent who are notorious for sleeping through revolutions. But today our very survival depends on our ability to stay awake, to adjust to new ideas, to remain vigilant and to face the challenge of change.” What’s one concrete step you can take to challenge the status quo and bring about more equity in your community, social circle or workplace? What resources, connections or support would you need to stick with it, even when things get tough?
