THREE BIG QUESTIONS

Share your name, where you’re from, and when you first became aware of your own racial identity.

A Southern Poverty Law Center study from 2017 found that most students are misinformed about issues related to slavery. Georgia’s Standards of Excellence for Social Studies mentions slavery first in the third grade, but 92 percent of high school seniors surveyed could not identify slavery as the central cause of the Civil War. Furthermore, fewer than one-third correctly named the 13th Amendment as the formal end of U.S. slavery.

What do you remember learning about race when you were at school (K-12)? Is there something you wish you had been taught, or not taught? Why?

Those in favor of teaching a more comprehensive American history often say that unless we learn our history, we are doomed to repeat it. Many who are against it believe that teaching racial history keeps us trapped in the past.

What’s at stake if we teach children and young people about our racial history; and what’s at stake if we don’t?

Author and children’s rights advocate, L.R. Knost, once said, “It’s not our job to toughen our children up to face a cruel and heartless world. It’s our job to raise children who will make the world a little less cruel and heartless.”

You'll want to make sure everyone participates and shares their thoughts, feedback, reactions and opinions with one voice at a time, and equal time to share.

Conversation is as much about listening as it is about talking. Listen and be open to hearing all points of view.

BE MINDFUL AND SHOW RESPECT Conversations encourage vulnerability. Be mindful of people’s privacy and acknowledge their bravery. What is said here stays here, what is learned here leaves here.

LIVED EXPERIENCE Be respectful of those with lived experience.

Avoid tokenizing them or putting an undue burden on them by asking them to educate or explain. Let them take the lead with how much they want to share.
