MO NTHLY NEWSL ET TER
LOOKING AHEAD... allows for a cautious optimism as we lead into the fall months, expecting to be in a position to fully fund the ministries of the congregation, as well as meet our connectional obligations as part of the Oklahoma Annual Conference.
Dr. Matthew Mitchell Senior Minister
I
want to share some wonderful news with you today! First, our financial health is extremely strong at the halfway point of 2019. In fact, when speaking to my friends and peers in United Methodism, I do not know of a large membership church doing better than Church of the Servant. Second, the Lay Leadership and Executive Staff at Servant are working diligently to provide a compelling Christ-centered vision for Church of the Servant for years to come. Even with so much happening throughout the United Methodist world today, Church of the Servant is strong, vibrant and excited about our future! First, let’s look at the finances. Through the first half of 2019, the financial performance of the congregation has been strong. At this time, our expectation is to end the month of June at approximately $100K (or 4.7%) better than budget projections. This surplus is due to a combination of tight cost control on the expense side, as well as stronger than expected contributions. To find ourselves in this position mid-way through the year
02
Just a few years ago, Church of the Servant was unable to pay our full missional offering to the United Methodist ministries across the world. These are known as apportionments, and each year Church of the Servant provides over $500,000 to the missions and ministries of the UMC. Today, Church of the Servant is leading the way in the Oklahoma Annual Conference, and while we are the second largest worshipping United Methodist Church in Oklahoma, we are one of only a few large United Methodist churches paying full apportionments. Second, the staff and lay leadership are preparing for the future ministry and facilities vision of our great church. The staff is currently working with the Unstuck Group. Due to a grant from the Oklahoma Annual Conference, Church of the Servant was able to partner with Unstuck and begin an in-depth vision process. Unstuck is led by Tony Morgan and a team of ministry professionals who truly desire to see the Kingdom of Jesus Christ grow in this modern day. Unstuck helps churches across the country ask hard questions about everything they do and everything they believe. Often, churches are stuck because they keep trying to change their environment with the same institutional thinking that worked in the past, but fails to change with the culture today. Thankfully, Unstuck is helping our staff to think in new and bold ways as we look at a vision for ministry in our community. Another area of focus with regard to
vision deals with the entire campus of Church of the Servant. Over the past year, the staff and lay leadership have been developing a comprehensive facility plan that will enable our church to continue to utilize and update the entire campus. Great care has been taken to embrace the great tradition of Church of the Servant and the focus on nature, light and a beautiful place for people to gather. We are also asking important questions about the facilities and how they need to be updated to continue to attract and service the hopes and dreams of people who will come to Church of the Servant in the future. Did you know a brand new housing addition is about to be developed north of the church property? Close to 200 homes will be built in this addition, and being ready for those new individuals and families will be important. Now is the perfect time to assess all we do and all we have, so that Church of the Servant can continue to be a church home for those who are already part of the family and those who are not yet here for years to come. I say all this to prepare our congregation for a season of vision sharing beginning this fall. In just a few months, the staff and lay leadership will begin to hold vision casting meetings where you can learn more about how Church of the Servant plans to intentionally enter into 2020 with a clear vision for the next decade. In closing, I want to thank you for your tremendous stewardship and support of the ministries of Church of the Servant. Each and every week, it is a joy and an honor to come to work in this great place and be in service with each of you. I cannot wait to see you in worship on Sunday! Serving Christ Together, Matthew
FRIENDS OF MAUA HOSPITAL ANNUAL GATHERING
To be held at Church of the Servant October 25-26, 2019
F
or the past 5 years, people representing more than thirty churches from nine states have gathered together along with our Kenyan hospital friends to share experiences, hopes and dreams for Maua Methodist Hospital. This year for the first time, the Gathering will be held in Oklahoma at Church of the Servant! Several strategic collaborations have resulted from these Gatherings. The most exciting plan, which has been three years in development, will give the hospital property potable water throughout the campus. We hope to know the final cost for this project by the October Gathering. Once completed, untreated river water will no longer be used anywhere on the 19-acre hospital compound! Lots of information is available about Friends of Maua Hospital at friendsofmaua.org. More details about the Gathering will be forthcoming on the Servant website and in future newsletters. The Gathering is open to all! Registration will begin online in August. The cost for both days is $75, which includes lunches both days. The cost for one day is $40. While many people cannot plan a trip to Kenya, in this case Kenya will be coming to us! We hope that if you are curious at all about our work in Kenya, you will come hear firsthand all about it.

ALPHA
Led by Dr. Robyn Goggs | Community Hall Sunday mornings, 10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. September 8 - November 24 The Alpha course seeks to introduce the basics of the Christian faith through a series of talks and discussions. It is a safe place to ask questions about the Christian faith and to explore the meaning of life. Do you or someone you know need a place to explore these hard questions of life? If you are a Christ follower, who do you know that you could invite to the next Alpha course? Over 12 sessions, questions like these will be addressed: Is there more to life than this? Who is Jesus? Why did Jesus die? How can I have faith? Who is the Holy Spirit? The Alpha course will be held Sunday mornings, September 8 – November 24, from 10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. in Community Hall and led by Dr. Robyn Goggs. Breakfast and child care is provided. A typical session will include: breakfast, a video session, and a time of discussion addressing the questions.

Living Your Strengths
Led by Eric Nance and Randy Crownover | Library Sunday evenings, 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. September 22 - November 3 You will be most successful in whatever you do by building your life around your greatest natural abilities. Most of us have been conditioned at home, in church, at work, and in school to correct our weaknesses. Contrary to this, the Gallup organization highlights that our talents should be our primary focus, not our deficiencies. This course will put you in touch with the unique combination of strengths that you have been given which places you with a calling—a calling to serve others and to advance the cause of Christ and the Church, a calling to ministry. When you discover your talents, you begin to discover your calling. Living Your Strengths will meet for seven sessions on Sundays, September 22 – November 3 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. It will be led by Eric Nance and Randy Crownover. The cost is $35 for the book and the Living Your Strengths assessment test.

MISSION OKC STORIES
I
have been on many mission trips throughout the years, and they all have a special place in my heart.
Each mission trip is different and unique in its own way. I really enjoyed Mission OKC this year. Most people think of mission trips as going to some place far away and helping people in need, but what is so cool about Mission OKC is that you see just how much needs to be done to help our community. It really helped me realize that we don’t have to travel far to help people. There are so many people who can benefit from our love and support right

SERVANT MIDDLE SCHOOL
SERVANT MIDDLE SCHOOL DISCIPLE CAMP
Servant Middle School kicked off our summer with our amazing Disciple summer camp in Welling, Oklahoma. For four days, 42 middle school students and 11 adult leaders spent time learning about the story of Jonah, and how God calls us to go and be the light. Read what some of the students and leaders shared about their experience: “I always learn a lot about who I am and who God wants me to be.” – Graham Mitchell, Student “Disciple Camp is always an amazing experience with the group of girls I have! I love how this year everything we discussed revolved around the story of Jonah. It was great for all of us to gain a deeper understanding of this important story we are all familiar with!” – Courtney Lindenborn, Leader “Disciple Camp is amazing because of how close you get with everyone around you through God and how much fun you can have there while still learning about the Lord.” – Kate Decker, Student “My experience at Disciple Camp was a great reminder of the passion we should express for Christ! We are all called through Him, and we should answer that call relentlessly.” – Ethan Renner, Leader “This year was my first time at Disciple Camp, and it was absolutely amazing! I loved all the hospitality as soon as we arrive and the fun memories of all of my friends working together! I will never forget the changes this trip permanently made in my life and the impact it had on others.” – Peyton Disney, Student “Disciple Camp was an amazing experience with getting to watch my small group, and the youth group as a whole, expand the borders of their faith and grow their relationships with Christ in everything they did during the week.” – Rachel Sanders, Leader

LOOK WHAT WE DID... POWER UP! VBS – JUNE 10-13 We had an incredible week of VBS!!! We had over 500 kids attend this fun-filled week and 200 volunteers that helped make it possible by doing everything from decorating the church to leading crews and teaching classes. We collected over 3,300 items to donate to the Homeless Alliance, such as: sunscreen, bug spray, ChapStick, and soap. Our VBS theme this year was, “POWER UP! God’s power gives me everything I need.” Kids saw the church transformed into a crazy video game world as they experienced God’s love and learned to watch for God in everyday life. At POWER UP! VBS, kids discovered that Jesus wants to know them. POWER UP! was filled with incredible Bible-learning experiences which allowed kids to see, hear, touch, and even taste! Creative crafts, team-building games, cool Bible songs, and tasty treats were just a few of the standout activities that help faith flow into real life. Our memory verse for the week was: “God’s power has given us everything we need to lead a godly life.” – 2 Peter 1:3a (NIrV). We will continue our POWER UP! Theme every Sunday morning in July to help reinforce all that they learned during VBS. Continue with the fun by joining us each Sunday morning at 9:30 and/or 11:00! Here are some comments we heard about VBS: “This VBS was phenomenal! They learned soooo much and go around singing all of the songs. My 6-year-old knows the fruit of the Spirit now! Thank you for all of the hard work!” “My grandson attended all 4 days of VBS and absolutely loved it! In my husband’s words, after pick-up on Wednesday, ‘they hit it out of the park.’ You guys really did a phenomenal job keeping the enthusiasm and engagement high, nailing a theme that would resonate with the kids with props that were met with oooohs and ahhhhs, and a saying that will live on in our home. Truly grateful - thank you all!”

JULY HAPPENINGS... POWER UP: RAISE YOUR GAME
EVERY SUNDAY MORNING IN JULY AGES 3 YEARS THROUGH KINDERGARTEN (JUST COMPLETED) This month, we will continue with our POWER UP! theme as we learn how Jesus gives us the power to love others—and not just the ones who are easy to love. No, this kind of power is what helps us love everyone! This powerful kind of love looks a lot like goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Our hope is that in the midst of playing games and laughing, connecting with friends and spending time with small group leaders, talking with parents at home and driving down the road, our preschoolers will learn how much Jesus wants to help them be all that God made them to be. Everything that Jesus is—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—is available to us. All we have to do is plug into the power source and POWER UP! Our memory verse this month comes from Philippians 4:13 and says, “I can do everything by the power of Christ.” When Jesus is your friend, He gives you the power to show goodness, be faithful, be gentle, and have self-control. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday mornings in July!

This month, we will be learning about the connection between the fruit of the Spirit and God’s character, as shown through God’s big story. The fruit of the Spirit is what God is doing in you to change the world around you. God created us in His image, and He sent His son, Jesus, to show us the way to live. He also knew we would need help; that’s why He sent us the Holy Spirit. With the power of the Spirit, we can produce fruit that points others to Jesus. Every month, kids discover something about God’s character and how they can reflect or respond to that character because they are created in God’s image. We call those Life-Apps. And this summer, we’re discovering how several of these Life-Apps show up, specifically in what the Apostle Paul calls the fruit of the Spirit. Our memory verse this month comes from Philippians 1:6 and says, “God began a good work in you. And I am sure that He will carry it on until it is completed. That will be on the day Christ Jesus returns.” We will discuss how to show God’s goodness to others and how to be faithful, so others can count on us. We will also learn that God can give us the strength to be gentle and gives us the power to have self-control. Join us for a new session each Sunday morning this month! ServantOKC.org

SERVANT KIDS VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Each month, we will be highlighting some of our very special and wonderful volunteers. This will help you get to know them better and also let you know who is leading our children on their spiritual journeys. If you see them around church, give them a hug or a high five for their hard work and dedication to children’s ministries!
TYLER & MEGHAN THOMPSON Preschool Total Group
We are mostly known as Stella and Brooks’ parents, and they are going into 2nd grade and kindergarten. We love attending Church of the Servant with several of our family members, and our church family is very important to us. When we aren’t at church, The Thompson Family! you can find us spending time with family and friends, or at various ball fields. We help in the preschool Total Group time at the 9:30 service, two times monthly. We love getting to know the kids and their families, watching the youngest kids become comfortable and confident, and watching all the kids worship Jesus and understand His teachings. Working with the kids is always encouraging, they love and include everyone and, although it’s cliché, we always learn more about how to be better parents and Christians when we help in children’s ministry.

WEEKLY DEVOTIONALS FOR FAMILIES AND KIDS On our new website, we have a section on the kids page with weekly devotionals. These devotionals include activities that go along with the lesson learned on the previous Sunday morning. We would like to encourage you to spend a few minutes each day with your child(ren) reinforcing what they have learned about that week during Total Group and small groups. We also post Bible readings, reflection questions, and more each day on Instagram and/or Facebook. When the church and family work together to enforce the concepts and lessons, we will have the greatest impact on the lives of our kids!
WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need help leading children to Christ!
