CHURCH OF THE SERVANT Bi-Weekly NEWSLETTER

Issue: 17.12

CHURCH OF THE SERVANT JULY 10 - 14 // 9AM - 4PM WWW.CHURCHOFTHESERVANT.COM/EVENTS

Priming the Pump… September 10 is an important day for almost every church. Not only is it a day where we will pause to remember September 11; it is also a day where we here at Church of the Servant will want to be ready for something special. What is it you ask? What is so special about September 10? This year, September 10 is the first Sunday after Labor Day and this is a day that will serve as a kick-off Sunday for the fall season at Servant. Football season will finally be underway and hopefully the temperatures will also begin to drop. Not only will the temperatures hopefully begin to drop, but people will begin to drop into the church on Sunday mornings. Often, once Labor Day has passed, many households will begin to find a routine and settle into the school year. I want to ask every member of our great church to begin to prepare for the fall season. To help the ministry teams begin to prepare, I want to challenge you to ask yourself if you are serving in a significant way here at Church of the Servant. Some of you are already doing so much I could never truly say “thank you” enough. FurDr. Matthew Mitchell thermore, for many, this season will be a wonderful opportunity to begin a new day Senior Minister and new service ministry. You will often hear me speak about how we are each called to serve inside these walls and outside these walls. If you do not currently have a place to serve, I ask you to begin to pray and ask God where you are being called to make an eternal difference on Sunday mornings. In the coming weeks, I plan to share multiple ways for each of us to serve at Servant this fall! Join me as we begin to prime the pump through prayer over the next few weeks. See you Sunday! Matthew

Volunteer for Care Ministries

Are you interested in volunteering for our Care Ministries? Perhaps you have a knack for encouraging others with words of comfort and care. Maybe you like sending cards and letters to people when they face difficult times. Perhaps you even feel a calling to go and visit people on behalf of our church so that you can pray with them and let them know God loves them. If you’d like to help support people during important times of their lives (like when they are hospitalized, having surgery, or experiencing grief in the family), we’d love to hear from you! There are various opportunities for you to serve in Care Ministries here at Church of the Servant. You can write notes and cards to our members, pray for them, or even become trained as a lay Care Chaplain. For more information, please call Vicki Roberds at (405) 728-4738 or email her at vroberds@churchoftheservant.com.

Missions An easy, convenient way to be in mission! BLOOD DRIVE

Sunday, July 9 Community Hall 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Make a Difference, Save a Life, Give Blood! Why it matters? Rev. Tim Travers, who has battled Lymphoma two different times, is now maintaining his immune system and bone marrow by an immune therapy which is reliant on blood donations. Last week, Tim went for a treatment and could only receive a half treatment, because the blood donations were low. Giving blood really does matter. It really does make a difference. A decision to donate your blood allows someone like Tim to continue to live life. On Sunday, July 9, give a gift of love to a stranger by giving blood. Our church faithfully continues to hold quarterly blood drives in partnership with the Oklahoma Blood Institute. Over the years, some of our faithful donors have not been able to continue, due to health and life circumstances. Would you consider taking their place and becoming a part of our team of donors here at Servant? Register online at: www.yourbloodinstitute.org/donor/ schedules/drive_schedule/209629 or stop by Community Hall on Sunday, July 9, and in a few moments, you can help save lives. It is a simple Sunday morning commitment that truly makes a huge impact!

Music Celebration Choir Touring in NYC! We had a great time sharing the Gospel of Jesus through our songs! We sang in some amazing worship spaces. On Saturday, we sang at The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Divine. St. John is the largest Cathedral in the world (a Cathedral is a church that is also the seat of a Bishop). Measured by length or internal volume, it is one of the five largest church buildings in the world. On Sunday, we led worship at The Historic Salem UMC in Harlem. We were welcomed with open arms! What a wonderful worship experience! We sang, we clapped, we praised God together with our United Methodist brothers and sisters. And yes we were strangely warmed! On Monday, we sang at St Paul’s Chapel of Trinity Church, an Episcopal parish. St. Paul’s recently celebrated it’s 250th year in continuous service to the community and worship to God.

St. Johns

As the dust began to settle after the collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, it became apparent that something extraordinary had happened at St. Paul’s Chapel. The 235-year-old building had survived the attacks and collapse of the towers without a scratch or a pane of glass broken. From the perfect acoustics to the beautiful architecture, to the feeling of Peace, this was a wonderful way to end our Musical Mission Tour of New York City. My thanks to the 63 participants that supported this tour and my staff that worked overtime to cover my Sunday responsibilities. Thankful,

Salem UMC

Children’s Mission Leadership Team Church of the Servant Children’s Ministries is continuing our program, the Children’s Mission Leadership Team. The team consists of 4th and 5th graders who are interested in guiding our Children’s Ministries Outreach. This year, we are adding a Welcome Team aspect! Our vision is that these young people will begin their journey of serving others here, and have a great basis from which to build as they grow older. Also, our goal is that they will understand our calling to serve others through our faith and build leadership skills in working for Jesus. This leadership team is responsible for searching for needs, determining choices and being involved in and leading the missions we support in our Sunday School, WOW, KOW, and Grapple groups. We will meet to determine missions we are interested in and what we want to accomplish, and facilitate those missions. This will be a student-led endeavor. I will supervise, but the ultimate decisions will be made by the leadership team.

2017 UNITED METHODIST ANNUAL CONFERENCE Annual Conference (AC) was held on May 29 - June 1 at OCU and St Luke’s UMC. Approximately 1,000 Clergy and Lay Leaders representing all 491 UM churches in Oklahoma were in attendance. Those representatives are called “Delegates.” The conference is chaired by our Bishop, Jimmy Nunn. The primary mission of the UMC is “TO MAKE DISCIPLES OF JESUS CHRIST FOR THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE WORLD.” The theme for this year’s AC was “WHY?” Why do we do what we do? Answering that question helps us to know how to proceed in the future. To accomplish this mission, each of us must be willing to tell our own spiritual story to others. Storytelling helps answer the question “Why.” After listening to reports/videos from every ministry area in our Conference, delegates: vote on proposed plans and programs that are presented; approve

our Conference budget for the coming year; vote on constitutional amendments to our Book of Discipline which are presented by the General Conference; and vote on resolutions put before the delegation covering everything from guidelines for parsonages, clergy pension, and health benefits for conference staff. We also vote to close some drastically declining churches and combine/ multiply others. We elect delegates to General and Judicial Conference, and vote on any other matter that affects our Conference. The good news is that our AC is in good financial condition, and our overall Sunday church attendance appears to be stabilizing rather than decreasing. Bishop Nunn has shifted the financial climate from what to cut to what we need to focus on keeping. One of the highlights for all our delegates was on Wednesday evening
