Preparing for Easter Greetings, Are you ready for Easter? Many of us can hardly believe we are in March already, and the thought of preparing for Easter is not even on the horizon of our planning lists. Yet, we all know Easter will be here before we know it. The other day, our family was traveling to the church for Wednesday night ministry events and we were talking about Easter. I hoped we would have a serious conversation to help us prepare for the most important day of the entire year! “What will we do for lunch?” Amber asked. “A new tradition, maybe? After all, we are in a new place and this will be our first Easter in Oklahoma. Plus, my parents are planning to come in town and Church of the Servant will be hosting five services on Easter Sunday!” Then, from the back of the car, one of my “precious” children spoke up, “Are we allowed to pull pranks on our friends at church on April’s Fools’ Day? After all, Easter is on April Fools’ Day, Dad; it could be AWESOME!” With a silent stare, I looked at Amber. Most of me was in shock. All I could do was ponder how to appropriately respond. A little bit of me was smiling because I started to think for a second, what could we do? Amber quickly looked at me, knowing what was running through my head, and simply said, as only a wonderful wife can, “Matthew, do not forget you are the Senior Pastor.” With that simple reminder, I found myself returning to the reality of preparing for Easter, which gave me a greater point to ponder. Dr. Matthew Mitchell Senior Minister
For some, the first Easter was a prank. Many thought Jesus’ body had been stolen, but later they were able to see a resurrected Jesus. Thomas, the doubting disciple, would not believe until his demands were met, but nothing could fully prepare him for an encounter with the resurrected Jesus. With less than one month before Easter Sunday, I challenge you to begin preparing for a special day at Church of the Servant. Things are going to be busy and exciting that day. Service times will be: Celebration Center Worship: 8:00, 9:30 & 11:00 a.m. (All services will have full choir, orchestra and the same order of service.) Modern Worship in the Centrum: 9:30 & 11:00 a.m. (A very special twist to the service is being prepared for this year’s Modern Worship Service.) One way you can help the church is to consider attending a service you do not usually attend. The 8:00 Celebration Service and the 9:30 Modern service will be perfect ways to have a spirit of mission on Easter Sunday. By attending one of these services, you will help provide space for someone who may come for the first time, or for someone who has not been to Church of the Servant in some time. By planning now, you may help someone else discover the truth of Easter! Preparing for the most important day in history, Matthew

Rebuilding Lives, Strengthening Communities Imagine your elderly parents, grandparents, or a dear friend living in a home without heat, a leaking roof, drafty windows or a bathroom with hazards for falling. The scenario may seem distant, affecting “other” people in “other” places, but these conditions affect Oklahoma City’s most vulnerable populations and the communities they live in. One Oklahoma City nonprofit is bringing hope in the form of roofs, ramps, paint, insulation, and more. Rebuilding Together OKC has been working in the Oklahoma City metro for more than 25 years to help repair homes, revitalize communities, and rebuild lives. And their efforts come at no cost to the individuals and families they serve. Working with Oklahoma City business partners, other social service agencies and volunteers, Rebuilding Together OKC provides vital repairs and renovations for homeowners who cannot physically or financially do the work themselves. “When a homeowner can’t keep up with repairs, the home begins to deteriate, and quality of life is compromised in ways that threaten health, family and the economic wellbeing of that family,” said Mike Edmison, Executive Director of Rebuilding Together OKC. “Rather than sending homeowners to nursing homes or building new structures, we help people stay in the homes and communities they love. It preserves the dignity of the family and makes an impact on the neighborhood around them.” For Eric and Rachel Southern, who live in south Oklahoma City’s Heronville neighborhood, making vital home repairs seemed to fall to the bottom of the list as they juggled careers, school, raising their three children, and caring for a niece. As part of Rebuilding Together OKC’s Rebuilding Day event, the nonprofit was able to replace inadequate plumbing, install new windows and bathroom fixtures, provide new cabinetry, and paint the interior – all for free! These kinds of repairs are typical for the organization, so they rely heavily on donations from corporate and individual sponsors and the skilled manpower of volunteers. Without their partners’ generous gifts of money and time, Edmison said, “we wouldn’t be able to help as many people as we do. It would be a heartbreaking scenario.” For people like Eva Fair, the first black woman to drive a tractor trailer for Tinker Air Force Base, and Joseph Moore, a 93-year-old U.S. Army veteran, Rebuilding Together OKC serves families, retirees, veterans, and people throughout the Oklahoma City metro who give so much, yet are in great need of the vital services Rebuilding Together OKC and their partners provide. The organization’s impact is significant and results in a value of $20 million to central Oklahoma each year. They have repaired more than 3,100 homes and nearly 50 community centers with the help of 70,000 volunteers and generous partners and donors. Their ongoing success is not a small feat; it’s an effort only achieved through elbow grease, passionate dedication and continued support from partners who believe in neighbors serving neighbors.

Servant Kids Wednesday Nights & Blessing Bags Our theme for February 28 through April 4 is “Serve God and Others”. One way we can serve is by making Blessing Bags. We are asking each child to bring at least 5 of one thing on the suggested list below to put in our Blessing Bag collection. These items may be brought March 7, 14, 28, and April 4 during Wednesday Night programming. On April 4, during our Servant Kids Wednesday Night Program, each child will make a Blessing Bag, filling it with at least 5 things from this assortment. They will then take this bag home to give to a homeless or needy person with their parent(s). “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ – Matthew 25:40 (NIV) Granola/Cereal bars

NextGen You’ve Been Egged... Servant Kids volunteers have prepared “You’ve Been Egged” kits for Servant families which will be available Sunday, March 18 at the Servant Kids Welcome Counter. The “You’ve Been Egged” project is a family outreach idea for Easter. Because one of the strategies of the NextGen Ministries at Church of the Servant is to create shared spiritual experiences, this project is offered for families to do together and also to share with other families. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: The kit includes twelve empty eggs, a door hanger, and suggestions for making this project a meaningful family experience. Eleven eggs should be filled by the family with candy and personal notes, but ONE egg is left empty representing the empty tomb. Families then hide the eggs in the yard of a neighbor, family or friends – someone that they have wanted to reach out to. The door hanger explains the eggs hidden in the yard. It is also suggested that the family sign the door hanger with messages of affirmation so that the recipient knows who reached out to them. This is an opportunity for families to play together, worship together, and serve together.

SERVANT HIGH SCHOOL A Leader’s Point of View
NextGen
I have been a part of Servant Student Ministries at Church of the Servant for the past fourteen years. It has been such a life-changing ministry for me. I started in sixth grade and was involved all the way through my senior year of High School. Servant Student Ministries was a very impactful part of my life that taught me what it means to follow Christ, to serve others, and to love as Christ would love. When I graduated, I became a small group leader for a group of about fifteen 6th-grade boys. I was very hesitant about leading when I was first asked. I didn’t know what it would entail and how I could possibly lead a bunch of energetic middle school boys. After some conversations, encouragement and prayer, I decided to trust God and take on this new role. It is now seven years later, and those crazy sixth grade boys are now grown senior men in Servant High School Ministries. I always thought that I loved Servant Student Ministries because of what I got out of it as a student, but the best part of my time with Servant Student Ministries has been as a leader, giving to a small group week in and week out. I have learned so much from this group of guys as their leader. They have shown me what it means to follow Christ, to serve others, and to love as Christ loves. Christ loved His disciples and taught them how to go and make disciples of men. I am positive that the Disciples of Christ, in their time with Jesus, would never imagine what they would learn and the joy they would receive from pouring into others rather than just being poured into by Christ. I think that Servant Student Ministries models this in such a tremendous way. They give so much time and effort to love and teach these students, from 6th grade to their senior year, about Christ and His teachings. They do not do this to be glorified for the amount of work they do, but so that students, like I once was, can have a community where they feel safe, supported and loved; a place where they learn what it means to glorify God; a place where they will maybe, just maybe, leave some day and turn around to invest in other students and make more disciples of Christ. Servant Student Ministries is an incredible opportunity to build relationships that have the ability to change your life forever. I would have never known this side of following Christ, serving, and loving others without saying yes to being a leader. I am truly blessed by this group of men that I have led for the past seven years. My relationship with them and my time in Servant Student Ministries as a student and as an adult has made my relationship with Christ deeper and more authentic. I am truly grateful for and blessed by this incredible ministry. Tyler Smith, Leader
Drew O’Hara and Tyler Smith
A Student’s Point of View To start off talking about my small group leaders, I’d like to talk about Tyler first. Tyler has been our small group leader since sixth grade. He has watched us grow up as well as we have watched him grow up. Tyler has always had a way of making our small group a carefree and comfortable place where we can just be ourselves, and he does it with ease by just always being happy. During some of my worst times, Tyler was there to help me through them. During some of my best times, Tyler was there to celebrate with me. Tyler has been like a second older brother that I’ve always looked up to and strive to be like. Cody was the leader of the other senior group before we combined, so he hasn’t been with us as long as Tyler, but Cody somehow made it seem like he’s been with us the whole time. His relaxed, goofy personality brings a sense of calmness and lightheartedness to the small group that makes everyone feel comfortable, just like Tyler does. Cody, although different in age from us, does a great job of relating to us and the normal struggles of a high school student to make us feel like we’re not alone. Tyler and Cody, although we like to cut up and goof off and sometimes drive them nuts, mean the world to us. I would like to thank them for all the selfless time and things they have done for us, such as: retreats, taking us places around the city, eating with us, talking to us on the phone, and of course, being there every Wednesday night. We will never be able to thank them enough. Drew O’Hara, Senior SERVANT March 7, 2018 I Page 9
NextGen High School Confirmation The act of Confirmation is one of the most beautiful elements of the United Methodist Church. It’s through this process where we learn biblical truths, recognize the work of Christ in our lives, and respond by publicly confirming the work of God in our loves. Typically, we start this process in Middle School, but we have four incredible students that are participating in High School Confirmation! If you are the praying type, please lift up prayers for Park Zeigler, Samantha Power, Emily Barrett, Leahla Barrett, and for Jill Perrin as she leads our students in Confirmation!
High School Senior Parents What a wonderful, yet emotional, season as you prepare to graduate your student from High School and help them transition for college and into adulthood. We have been incredibly blessed to partner with you in ministering to your child over the years! Our mission in Servant High School is to lead the next generation to become fully committed followers of Jesus Christ. A few of our key strategies are to create shared family experiences and to celebrate milestones in the life of families. We will have a few opportunities to do both. •

Today, let’s take a look at Penn Avenue Redemption United Methodist Church.
Mar 18 – Smoked Brisket Sandwiches, Baked Beans, Fries or Potato Salad, and Dessert.
Penn Avenue Redemption Church is an affiliate of the United Methodist Church. It serves a congregation in the vicinity of 1320 N Pennsylvania – but it also serves a population of soon-to-be-released inmates from the six community correctional facilities around Oklahoma City, and their families. Three times a week inmates are transported to the church for worship services, classes, choir, and group study. The mission of Redemption Church is to serve their community by being and making disciples for Jesus Christ, celebrating God’s grace, encouraging recovery and providing fellowship for prisoners, ex-prisoners, and their families.
Mar 11 – Homemade Chicken Fried Steak Dinner or Sandwich , Mashers with Gravy or Fries, Green Salad, and Dessert.
Mar 25 – Easter Feast Buffet! The Kitchen is located just inside Community Hall. Join us on Sundays for hot breakfast or lunch!
The congregation of Redemption Church is a delightful mixture of congregants who are homeless in the area and the families who travel to worship and visit with their loved ones who are incarcerated. Sunday dinner is fed to approximately 200 people each week, and there is a clothing closet for those who are homeless, incarcerated or in need. What a privilege it is to send Earthglow dollars to help in this most worthwhile ministry! Over the existence of Earthglow (some 42 years now), $817,244 has been shared with organizations like Penn Avenue Redemption. Thank you for your dedication in shopping Earthglow. Right now, Easter gift items abound in the shop for your giving pleasure. Stop in often. Your purchases do make a difference!
