PREPARING FOR THE LENTEN SEASON
Dr. Matthew Mitchell Senior Minister
O
n March 6, the holy season of Lent begins in many churches throughout the world. Many Christians, but not all, celebrate this season. Often I am asked, “What is Lent?” and “Why do we celebrate Lent?” The first question is much easier for me...
What is Lent? A simple answer – Lent is defined by the Westminster Dictionary of Theological Terms as:
Throughout the season of Lent, Church of the Servant will focus on how each of us might discover a deeper walk with Christ during weekly worship and in the message. Lent can be about so much more than giving up chocolate or soft drinks. While giving up these sugary delicacies may be important, I would like to invite you on a Lenten journey to discover more about Lent and to discern what Christ may be calling you toward during this special and important time of the year. Throughout Lent, my messages will focus on the story of Jesus just after his baptism. In preparation, read Luke 4:1-14. In this moment of Jesus’ life he is led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit to begin to prepare for his ministry.
The period of forty weekdays prior to Easter, beginning with Ash Wednesday. It was originally a time to prepare candidates for baptism and became a period of penitence for those who have been baptised.
The weekly messages will focus on:
Why do we celebrate Lent?
March 17: Prayer
This is much more complicated to answer. Many of us have various and important reasons for celebrating Lent. Some people give up chocolate or soft drinks. Maybe you know someone who gives up sugary foods or screen time on their favorite devices. Some people “give up” something because they find deep meaning and encounter with Christ when they go without something in their life. Others are not as confident in the “WHY?” Nonetheless, Lent can be a time of depth and encounter with the Lord.

Classes for Adult Men & Women
Discipleship Ministries WE ARE AN EASTER PEOPLE
Lenten Teaching Series | Sundays, April 7 & 14, 11am | Chapel of the Cross During the two weeks leading up to Easter, Dr. Stephen Gunter will be presenting a Lenten lecture series, titled “We Are Easter People.” Join Dr. Gunter in Chapel of the Cross at 11:00 a.m. on Sundays, April 7 and 14. Sunday school classes may want to plan their schedules to take advantage of these enlightening lectures:
April 7 – Discerning Resurrection Truth When we affirm that we believe in the truth of resurrection, what are we affirming? Is the resurrection actually true? What do we affirm in our liturgy when we say: “We proclaim to you the mystery of faith: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.”
April 14 – Living into Resurrection Truth While we tend to think of the resurrection as a far away, future event, the New Testament writers describe resurrection reality as a “realized future.” As we live by the Holy Spirit into resurrection truth, we discern the future God has in store for us right now.
LIVING YOUR STRENGTHS
Tuesdays, April 9 - May 21, 6:30-8:00pm Led by Eric Nance and Kristin Blazy South Adult Room 1&2
This journey is based upon 30 years of research by the Gallup organization whose findings show that you will be most successful in whatever you do by building your life around your greatest natural abilities. Most of us have been conditioned at home, in church, at work, and in school to correct our weaknesses. Contrary to this, the Gallup organization highlights that our talents should be our primary focus, not our deficiencies. This program will put you in touch with the unique combination of strengths that you have been given which places you with a calling—a calling to serve others and to advance the cause of Christ and the Church, a calling to ministry. When you discover your talents, you begin to discover your calling. Class will meet seven weeks. Please register online at www.churchoftheservant.com/events.
HEALTHY COPING SKILLS FOR EVERY DAY STRESS
Tuesdays, April 9 - May 21, 6:30-8:00pm South Adult Room 4 Led by Michelle Diessalhorst-Reece, LCSW

Church member, Michelle Diessalhorst-Reece, LCSW, whose professional life as a counselor in Veteran affairs, will lead this educational experience for learning practical coping skills in daily life. Please register in advance as group size will be limited. Register at www.churchoftheservant.com/events.

FALL INTERNATIONAL MISSION TRIP TO MYANMAR November 29 - December 7 Led by Bill and Yvonne Morgan Informational Meeting – Sunday, April 29 at 12noon Why Myanmar? Bill and I started working with a group of orphans in Myanmar almost 8 years ago. The children’s home there has grown to over 30 orphans during the years. Two years ago, we built a brand new facility for the children to allow for future growth. On this trip, we will spend time visiting and interacting with the kids. We will tour the facility to see how it operates. Last trip, we also hosted a women’s conference for over 500 women desperate to hear the word of God. As part of this year’s trip, we will hold another conference to share our faith with them. We are praying to reach 1,000 women this year. The women want to learn how to live as Christian women, moms and wives. This trip will provide lots of time to interact with the locals in an area that does not see many tourists. You will find the people very warm and welcoming. Estimated cost is $3,000 all inclusive of the trip. If you would like more details about this trip or to ask questions before the information meeting, please contact Yvonne Morgan at morganoufans@cox.net. ChurchoftheServant.com

Servant MIDDLE SCHOOL
SERVANT MIDDLE SCHOOL Serving at the Regional Food Bank Servant is in our name and serving is in our DNA. One of my favorite bible verses is 1 Peter 4:10. It says, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” We each have a role in the body of Christ, and I love when I see our middle school students live out the gifts that they have to serve others. We are called as followers of Jesus to serve others and to use our gifts. That is what our middle school students did on an early Saturday morning. They could have gone to a movie, slept in, or simply done nothing, but these awesome students chose to serve their community. They worked hard to pack bags for Regional Food Bank’s Food for Seniors program and they were able to help provide over 61,000 meals for our community. I am biased, but I urge you to get to know these incredible students. Whether that is simply just saying “hi” in the hall, praying over them, or better yet, volunteering to serve in Middle School Ministry. These students are fun, they are caring, and they are seeking after God. I am so proud of each of them for living out their gifts that God has given them! servant kids Pirate Night! On February 6, Servant Kids had Pirate night and talked about putting on the ARRRmor of God. Based on Ephesians 6:10-18, there are six pieces of armor the kids learned about. We had six stations representing those six pieces and the kids rotated through each station to do activities and play games. The kids got a piece of a treasure map at each completed station, and the treasure map led to some “Pirate’s Booty” popcorn at the end for a treat.
Made Every Sunday morning in March Ages 3 years through Kindergarten This month, we will begin laying the foundation for some very important future conversations around the subject of sexual integrity. Before we ever talk with kids and teens about what to do and not do with their bodies, we need to start with who made their body and why that makes them so valuable. And a great place to start is now, in the preschool years, with this simple but powerful truth—God made me. Preschoolers need to learn now that they are wonderfully made by God, in His image. This makes them very important and motivates them to respect themselves and others. Our scripture verse this month comes from Psalm 139:14 and says, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” We will do some super fun, hands-on activities to learn about how we are wonderfully made, made in God’s image, and important to God. We will also learn about how God made us to respect ourselves and to respect others. Join us each Sunday morning this month!

Grapple for Servant 45 On February 13, our fourth and fifth graders gathered for a special night which included “Would You Rather?” Valentine’s Edition and Fun Facts games, pizza, and a topic to “grapple” with all together. We discussed how “Jesus is the only way” from Matthew 7:13-23 and about how the path to God is only through Jesus’ death on the cross which gives us eternal life. Servant 45 meets on the second Wednesday of each month, and we hope you’ll join us!
Made Every Sunday morning in March Grades 1-5 This month, we will be learning about the connection between individuality and God’s character, as shown through God’s big story. Individuality is a reflection of the character of God. God is one of a kind. He has no beginning and no end. Everything He has created is unique and one of a kind, including people created in His image. Every person is an original reflection of God in how they love, care for others, imagine, create, and solve problems. Jesus lived this out in the way He loved all people, and helped people feel like they had value no matter who they were or what they had done. We can reflect this in the way we live out how God created us. Our scripture verse this month comes from Psalm 139:14 and says, “How you made me is amazing and wonderful. I know that very well.” We will discuss how God made us in His image and wants to have a relationship with us. God made us to make a difference and wants us to see what really matters. We will talk about how God made us to love others. Join us for a new session each Sunday morning this month!

SERVANT KIDS
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Each month, we will be highlighting some of our very special and wonderful volunteers. This will help you get to know them better and also let you know who is leading our children on their spiritual journeys. If you see them around church, give them a hug or a high five for their hard work and dedication to children’s ministries!
I
help lead the fourth and fifth graders on Sunday mornings for Total Group time. I love hearing the kids’ thoughts and ideas about each lesson. I am amazed by their kind hearts and love for Jesus. I would encourage anybody thinking about volunteering to come down and interact with the kids. They are energetic and open to learning about God. They share their fears, struggles, and love each and every week. I gain far more from volunteering than I give. I have two boys, Coulter (8th grade) and Landon (5th grade). I am grateful for the amazing people I have met in children’s ministries who serve as positive role models for my children and have blessed me with friendship, encouragement, and compassion.

EARTHGLOW GIFT SHOP A GIFT BOUTIQUE THAT KEEPS ON GIVING
These are a Few of My Favorite Things
W
hen you are a regular Earthglow shopper, you quickly discover that there are some fantastic items that will become your favorites. Here are quotes from some of our faithful shoppers who have found items that they really love for themselves and to give as gifts. “I love my floor mat and inserts! I look forward to changing out the insert to reflect the current season. This is also a great gift idea!” – Jan Green “I love decorating for all the seasons! Now I can announce the holiday or season right on my front porch with the mat inserts! It’s so much fun, and they’re so colorful and charming! Big Plus - they never are affected by the Oklahoma wind! Not too thick for the door to open over them, either. One (only one) of my favorite Earthglow treasures!” – Jimi Hadley “I am using my eCloth to clean the grates on my stove. I had Googled how to clean them and learned that I should put them in a big tub with ammonia – YIKES! So I pulled out my eCloth instead. Not that I love cleaning the grates, but I am having success on a neglected chore sans chemicals!” – Lisa Fansher “I love the washable gardening gloves. I use them year-round for more than just gardening. I also put them in the Christmas stockings of my gardening friends and relatives. And the sugar-free Abdallah candy is the best we have ever tasted – and we have tasted a lot of the best brands.” – Jo Hall “I love our Abdallah candies because we have many flavors and they are delicious – just ask Kipp!” – Sharon Evans “Our little Miniature Schnauzer, Little Buddy, doesn’t shop in Earthglow much. But he loves it when I do! Because I buy our very popular dog bones for him and they are his very favorite treats of all. We have the bones for little dogs like Buddy, bones for medium-size dogs, and huge bones for big dogs. They are one of our most popular items and one of my favorites!” – Kipp Neaves “When it comes time to purchase a wedding gift, I turn to Earthglow. My favorite gift to purchase for newlyweds is one of the serving trays with the pop-ups. With this item, all occasions can be celebrated with only a change for the appropriate holiday or celebration accessory.” – Judy Cooper Let Earthglow become your first stop when looking for a gift item or something special just for you. And remember, every purchase you make supports local missions!

PRIME TIME LUNCHEON
THURSDAY, MARCH 14 AT 10:30 am IN COMMUNITY HALL The Elderly Brothers! Remember when they were here a couple of years ago? Well, they’re coming back to Prime Time on Thursday, March 14 at 10:30 a.m. in Community Hall to liven up our morning! They may just be local boys, but they happen to like entertaining with great music, especially music from the 50’s and 60’s. Steve Coleman and John Hochgraefe comprise The Elderly Brothers – and when they’re asked if they really are brothers, the answer is always the same: “Yes, we are brothers – from different mothers!” Both musicians have deep roots in Oklahoma. John played through his late high school and college years with a successful local band (The Ho-Dads), performing for radio stations such as WKY and KOMA. Steve began playing professionally while studying at the University of Oklahoma. Although John took a “time out” from music, Steve continued as an outstanding musician and vocalist playing with too many bands to name. Steve’s musical travels have taken him across the United States and Japan. In 2004 John’s father became a resident at St. Ann’s Retirement Community. His mother insisted that John dust off his guitar. With the help of his friends, they began playing for the residents there, giving birth to The Elderly Brothers. Since then, they have played hundreds of times for church groups, weddings, retirement communities, and social gathers. Their mission statement and purpose is to bring happiness and quality entertainment to those they are privileged to serve. According to Steve and John, they are blessed to have this ministry, blessing others through their music as The Elderly Brothers. This fun, entertaining program will whet our appetite for another of Michele’s yummy lunches! Program alone is $2; with the meal it is $10. Prime Time fellowship is free! Sign up online at www.churchoftheservant.com/events, at the Welcome Center, or call the church office, 721-4141 by 12noon on Wednesday. Don’t forget your poodle skirts, white t-shirts and penny loafers! You don’t want to miss all the fun!

WHEN A FAMILY IS FACED WITH AN ILLNESS OR CRISIS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER TO INFORM CARE MINISTRIES OF THAT SPECIAL SITUATION. AS A CHURCH FAMILY, ALL OF US CAN HELP. IF YOU KNOW OF A MEMBER WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM OUR SPECIALIZED CARE OR OUR PRAYERS THROUGH CARE MINISTRIES, CALL CARE MINISTRIES AT 728-4738 OR 721-4141. YOU CAN ALSO GO ONLINE TO FILL OUT A PRAYER REQUEST OR TO SEE THE WEEKLY UPDATED PRAYER CONCERNS AT WWW.CHURCHOFTHESERVANT.COM/ CHURCHLIFE.
Grief Support AT CHURCH OF THE SERVANT: Have you experienced the loss of a loved one? If so, perhaps you would benefit from our Grief Support Group at Church of the Servant. We’ve already begun our meetings, but please know that you are always welcome to join us anytime, because registration never closes. Whether you have recently experienced the death of a loved one, or if you have been on a grief journey for a long time, we hope you’ll consider joining the group. We’ll continue to meet in the Library at Servant on Sundays (3:00-4:30 p.m.) through May 5, 2019. The Library is located in the office area directly behind the big waterfall. Each session includes a video and plenty of time for discussion and sharing. Each participant will receive a complimentary workbook. To register for the course please contact Vicki Roberds at (405) 7284738 or vroberds@churchoftheservant.com.
