‘BEST OF ALL, GOD IS WITH US.’ - WESLEY

Dr. Matthew Mitchell Senior Minister

Dear Servant Family, Later this month, United Methodist delegates from all over the world will gather in Saint Louis for a special called General Conference of the United Methodist Church. Normally, General Conference meets to officially conduct the business of our denomination every four years. However, this year’s General Conference will be a special called session to discuss one particular matter. Since the denomination’s founding in 1968 United Methodists have debated over how to best interpret Holy Scripture on matters surrounding human sexuality, and in particular, the issue of homosexuality. While this newsletter article is not adequate to cover the topic in depth, I hope you will be better informed as to the importance of this month’s meeting. Preparing our hearts, minds, and souls is critically important during this time leading up to General Conference. If you would like to study the legislation being presented at General Conference, I suggest you go to www.umc.org. This is the official United Methodist website for our denomination. By going to this site and carefully studying the proposed plans, you will be better equipped to understand what is being presented. Other sites and caucus groups have their individual biases, hopes, and dreams. By staying on the official UMC website, you will be able to learn more and ask better questions from our official source. Many of us believe this topic

02

is so complex that no change will result from this General Conference in 2019. Regardless of the outcome, we will be talking about human sexuality and a biblical understanding of this topic for years to come. Once the dust as settled, in early March I will post the times and dates for two open meetings to be held at the church. At these meetings, I will be able to discuss what actually happened in Saint Louis and share my feelings about the outcome. Many have asked me to make a declaration as to how I feel and what I hope will happen. Of course, if you ask me in person I will share my hopes, dreams, and fears, but an email or a newsletter article is not the place for that conversation. One of my promises to all of you is that you can ask me anything. Yet, I always counter with “Can you handle anything I might say in response?” To share my thoughts on such an important topic that deals with people’s lives and loved ones in a few short paragraphs will not adequately allow me to share my feelings in truth and love. I would prefer to share with you in person. Please know, not one of the appointed clergy at Church of the Servant take this matter lightly. Even one of our own lay members, Cara Nicklas, is serving as a voting lay delegate at General Conference in Saint Louis. We all covet your thoughts and prayers; especially for Cara.

AN OPEN INVITATION TO SMALL GROUPS AND NEW SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES Who do you spend time with on a regular basis? How are those relationships bringing hope, joy, and friendship to you and pointing you to Jesus? Whether you are looking for a discipleship study group, accountability group, Sunday school class, or just a group of like-minded, faith-seeking people to do life with on a regular basis, this is what discipleship ministries can do for you at Church of the Servant. Finally, two quick bits of advice for all of us. Philippians 4:6 tells us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Being anxious will not help any of us. Prayerfully talk with God and carefully have conversations with others. Secondly, one of my favorite John Wesley quotes simply states, “Best of all, God is with us!” No matter what, God is with us. He is with His Church and with all His creation! Never forget, we do not have to be anxious because God is with us and he has promised to never leave us. Serving Christ Together,

Over the last few weeks, 76 people gathered to begin some new discipleship groups in our church. These groups have begun and are looking for others to join them as they grow in their Christian faith. There are four new Sunday morning groups meeting at 11:00 a.m. for 30-40s and 50-60s for singles and couples, a women’s class of all ages for study and accountability, and a diverse group of people in all walks of life focusing on holistic spirituality. Four new groups are meeting throughout the week for women and men, and for 5060s couples. It is not too late to be a part of this new beginning. Contact Dr. Robyn Goggs if you would like more information. Grow deeper in your walk with Christ and consider joining a group study in the new year. Some of the classes being offered are listed on the next few pages and all can be found on the church website. ChurchoftheServant.com

Sister-to-Sister Mentoring Ministry

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up...” – 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Last Sunday, 75 women gathered to explore the idea of having or being a mentor in the life of another woman. Great fun and connection was had by all as we dreamt and planned for what this might hold in 2019. It’s not too late to be involved. Come by the office this week and fill out a profile for matching with another woman. On Sunday morning, February 17 at 11:00 a.m. in Chapel of the Cross, we will be meeting for a quick orientation and meeting with partnering women. For more information, contact Barbara Bonham at barbbonham@cox.net or Susie Cobden at scobden@churchoftheservant.com or 405-728-4711.

CASTING CALL: Good Friday Service Music Ministry is asking for volunteers for the Good Friday Service on April 19 at 7:30 p.m. We are looking for actors to bring to life the famous works of Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and more! The great thing is that there are NO lines to memorize! We will use your talents for a series of tableaus depicting Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice for us all. There is a list of great characters, from Roman Soldiers to Mary Magdalene, and more. For more information and to volunteer, contact Crystal Johnson at crysjohnson1@yahoo.com.

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES: March 6 @ 7a • 12p • 7p We are offering four worship opportunities for Ash Wednesday: 7:00 a.m. and 12Noon in Chapel of the Cross, 7:00 p.m. in Celebration Center (Blended), and 7:00 p.m. in the Centrum (Modern). Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. Ash Wednesday takes place 46 days before Easter Sunday. Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. As the minister applies the ashes to a person’s forehead, he speaks the words: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19).

High School Winter “Light” Retreat This past weekend, we had our Winter Retreat. This was an experience where we dig into what it means to live in the “light” and we learned how God has created each of us with a unique gift to be “light” in darkness. This weekend was made even more special by the many adult leaders pouring into students. We had 29 leaders who were willing to give up their weekend to love on some kids and to point them to Christ. Hands down, we have the BEST volunteers in the world. Can’t say enough about our team. Thank you: David Hammons, Christy Strickland, David Loftis, Kendall Carpenter, Ron Sahmaunt, Beth Parker, John Lingo, Micha Edwards, Kristen Todd, Tim Lloyd, Andi Butler, Andi Neaves, Karla O’Hara, Mike Gentry, Leslie Flurry, Tanner Schlinke, Amy Hammons, Rebecca Valentine, Julianne Henry, Tyler Slife, Tyler Smith, Taylor Dickerson, Cody Carson, Park Zeigler, Todd Neaves, Juli Hudson, Hurst Jones, and Chad Berry.

T

he “light” retreat was such a great experience! I got to be with my church family and learn so much about Jesus. I had a great small group, and had so much fun being in it with all my friends. We got to do so many fun games and activities. We got to go in depth about what our calling was and letting the “light” in, and not ignoring it. We got to hang out with friends and just overall have a really fun weekend, meeting many new people! Mackenzie Mitchell

T

he high school winter retreat was a great experience for both myself and my son Henry. Going to Cross Point allowed the kids to experience a new and different camp with a great location on the shores of Lake Texhoma. Plus, the weather was unbelievable! Sang did a great job planning the weekend, with just the right amount of small group and worship time mixed with free time and activities. I loved how the small groups were mixed to include both boys and girls. This gave everyone a different small group experience from what we’re used to on Wednesday nights. It also was a great opportunity for everyone to get to know people that they don’t normally spend time with weekly at church. The highlight for me was the Saturday night worship service, which was very powerful and moving for everyone there! Chad Berry

HIGH SCHOOL

M

y retreat experience was amazing. At first, I was skeptical of the new camp. Was the food going to be as good as Canyon Camp? What activities were going to be available? What were the cabins going to be like? Then, I realized that wasn’t why I went. I went to learn something new about God and his plan for me. The worship services were amazing. The sermons were impactful, music was very good, and the last day was awesome. That cross overlooking the lake was so beautiful. Next, small groups were also fun! Our group learned so much, made new friends, and connected great. The chicken tenders and cake were good, as well as that Ocean Juice. My favorite part of camp was the letters I received from my loved ones at worship. It showed me how others view me and my work through God. I am already looking forward to the next retreat! We are working with an incredible organization, www.csm.org/trip-locations/houston. We will have opportunities to work at centers, urban ministries, local churches, and outreach centers. Registrations are due February 17. We are only able to take 40 students. Spots will be limited. To ensure a spot, it is a good idea to get your registration in before the deadline. servant kids GLOW PARTY! On January 9, Servant Kids had an epic Glow Party! The kids made slime, painted bandanas, did some face painting, and had a dance party! We talked about how Jesus is the light of the world and how we can shine His light to others by being joyful and kind.

Love Bugs Every Sunday morning in February Ages 3 years through Kindergarten We can’t think of a better time to teach preschoolers about how much Jesus loves them than in February—the month of love! And how much does Jesus love preschoolers? Well, the same as He loves you and me—A LOT! In fact, there is nothing wider or longer or higher or deeper than the love Jesus has for you and the preschoolers in your life. This month, our goal is for preschoolers to know Jesus loves them, and that nothing will ever change that. Our Bible verse this month comes from Ephesians 3:18 and says, “How wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.” We will do some super fun, hands-on activities to learn about how Jesus loves me, Jesus wants to spend time with me, Jesus wants to help me, and Jesus loves me know matter what. Join us each Sunday morning this month!

Grapple for Servant 45 On January 16, our fourth and fifth graders gathered for a special night which included Guess-Emoji and Animal Stackers games, pizza, and a topic to “grapple” with all together. We discussed the armor of God from Ephesians 6:10-18 and about how we can resist temptation like Jesus did in the desert! Servant 45 meets on the second Wednesday of each month, and we hope you’ll join us!

Always Open: Service with a Smile Every Sunday morning in February Grades 1-5 This month, we will be learning about the connection between service and God’s character, as shown through God’s big story. Service is a reflection of the character of God. Jesus offered incredible examples of service. He not only lived a life of service, but He gave His life as the ultimate example of service. We reflect His character when we serve the people around us. Our scripture verse this month comes from Mark 9:35 and says, “Jesus sat down and called for the 12 disciples to come to him. Then he said, ‘Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last. They must be the servant of everyone.’” We will discuss how we can look for ways to serve others, using what we have to serve others, and serving others without looking for applause. Join us for a new session each Sunday morning this month! ChurchoftheServant.com

SERVANT KIDS

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Each month, we will be highlighting some of our very special and wonderful volunteers. This will help you get to know them better and also let you know who is leading our children on their spiritual journeys. If you see them around church, give them a hug or a high five for their hard work and dedication to children’s ministries!

I

help lead the fourth and fifth graders on Sunday mornings for Total Group time. What I love about volunteering: I love learning and refreshing my memory on the Bible stories and enjoy sharing those stories and lessons with the 4th and 5th graders. The children always help me look at things in a different perspective and have very thoughtful questions and comments on the lessons. It’s an uplifting and fulfilling part of my week.

Rachel Caywood

Encouragement for those who want to volunteer: It’s not has hard as you might think. The staff at Church of the Servant make the lessons so easy. All I do is read the lesson and pray for the students beforehand and show up to teach. Jessica and Kourtney do all the prep work for the lessons and games. The kids are great, and I’ve made new friendships with the other volunteers. Personal Information: I’m an optometrist and work at the VA hospital. I have two amazing daughters, Alyssa and Alexis, and I have been married to my wonderful husband Josh for almost 16 years. Rachel Caywood

I

help lead on the first and second Wednesday night of each month for 1st-5th graders. It’s fun to see the excitement in each kid as they learn about God! Volunteering is fun and easy -- you don’t have to know everything that happened in the Bible.

VOLUNTEERING IN SERVANT KIDS HAS MANY DIFFERENT LOOKS. This group of ladies faithfully and reliably show up every Tuesday morning to help cut out and prepare activities for the kids as part of their lessons for Sunday mornings. We appreciate all our volunteers, whether they work behind the scenes like this group or are leading our kids in total groups and small groups. Servant Kids Ministry couldn’t happen without dedicated volunteers pouring into the lives of the children!

BEHIND THE SCENE: WHIZ KIDS DRIVERS Each and every Monday that OKC Public Schools are in session, a group of dedicated but largely unseen people pick up the Whiz Kids at the end of their school day. They drive the vans in pairs – a driver and a rider. The rider makes sure that all the children are on board with their seat belts buckled for the ride from Edgemere to Wesley UMC. Bill White has the master list of children and the school advises him if someone is absent. The children know that their van is either the red, blue or yellow van. It’s a well-oiled team in a well-organized project! Pictured here is Bill White holding his list as he waits for his drivers to arrive. The teams on this particular Monday were: Hank Kittrell, Bill White, Joe Rolston, Ken Bradford, Donna and Doug Johnson, and Jim Talkington. Mission is mostly not big and flashy, but ordinary people doing small things in loving and unselfish ways. These drivers are one of the ripples from the rock that is Whiz Kids.

Journey TO THE HOLY LAND

2019 HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGE September 2-14, 2019

I would like to personally invite you to join me in 2019 for a journey to the Holy Land. This will be my first pilgrimage to this very special and historic part of our world. As many of you know, Church of the Servant has a long-standing tradition of traveling to the Holy Land. Pastor Emeritus, Dr. Norman Neaves, began this tradition years ago and I am excited to continue this special tradition. I hope you will join me and many others as we discover and reconnect to our religious roots and experience the land of prophets, disciples and our Savior, Jesus Christ. Here are a few important details for the 2019 trip: WHO: All are invited, but only 58 spots are open for this year’s journey. WHAT: A pilgrimage to the Holy Land, guided by On Eagles Wings Tours and me. This is the same award-winning travel agency used for many years by multiple groups from Church of the Servant. WHEN: September 2-14, 2019 WHERE: Multiple cities, including 1 night on the coast, 3 nights in Galilee, 2 nights at the Dead Sea, and 5 nights in Jerusalem. WHY: This pilgrimage will be a first for many and possibly a return for others. More than a vacation or “Christian tourism” can be expected. The 2019 trip will be a time of relationship, education, discovery, and so much more. HOW MUCH: $5,280 Per Person, Standard Air. If you would like to know more, please plan to join me at our next meeting, Sunday, February 17 at 12:15 p.m. in the Centrum for more in-depth information, a detailed itinerary, deadlines, and an opportunity to ask questions and learn more.
