I hope you will save the date and plan to attend a unique ONE-SERVICE CELEBRATION at Church of the Servant on February 27 at 10:00 a.m. On this particular Sunday, I want to call the church together for a day of celebration, testimony, worship, and vision! An extraordinary announcement will be shared you will not want to miss! Sunday, February 27, will be Transfiguration Sunday. Transfiguration Sunday is an exciting day in the liturgical calendar, and Christians worldwide will read Luke 9:2843a. Luke 9 shares the story of Jesus where he and three disciples – Peter, John, and James – travel to Mt. Tabor for an incredible moment with Jesus. Peter is so moved he does not want to leave the mountain top. However, Jesus reminds Peter there is so much more kingdom work still to be done. I hope you will begin to prepare by reading this scripture and asking what God might have in store for you, our community, and our faith family. Friends, I am incredibly encouraged about how our congregation has journeyed through the past two years, and I do not want you to miss Sunday, February 27th! Not only will we celebrate worship, but we will also break bread together. A meal will take place after the service; make a reservation for the meal by going to ServantOKC.org/ LUNCH. Middle school and high school youth are encouraged to attend the service and the meal. Servan Kids (fifth grade and under) will have a special day of programming and a meal in The Point. Make a reservation, read Luke 9:28-43, and get ready to learn what God is up to at Church of the Servant.

NEXT STEPS! Ways to Get Connected...

You may have heard some rumors floating around the church about our Sunday school classes and how full our meeting spaces are, especially during the 11:00 hour. The rumors are true; I am happy to report! What a fantastic “problem” to have. I am thrilled to see more and more people joining groups, taking next steps, and looking for ways to grow in their faith. Community plays such a vital role in our spiritual transformation, so seeing so many in our church choosing to lean into that is encouraging. If you have been looking for ways to get more connected into the life of this church and find relationships that help you grow in your faith, I would love to have a conversation with you and help you find a group that is a good fit. We currently have twenty-four small groups that meet regularly and several different large-group studies to choose from.

The response to our request in early November for furnishings for our family was incredible. We felt we would have an apartment in a week or two. Then it seemed like nothing happened for 6 weeks. And that is what happened. There are any number of issues at play: very few affordable apartments/houses available to rent, our small family wanted to be close to a relative and therefore had to wait until two units became available at the same time, some apartment owners are hesitant to rent to the refugees. Once we had an address and a key, then it was a matter of what donated pieces would be easiest to move up stairs to a second-floor apartment, what pieces would fit into small rooms and would be most useful for a family with young children. We know it’s been frustrating. Please be patient for a while longer as a home for our large family of eleven is found. Stacey Brim, Stacy McGinnis, and Ann Knutson

GETTING TO KNOW OUR NEIGHBORS About eight Servant members have gone through training provided by Spero Project which includes trauma informed care and cultural information (which languages are spoken, what is the proper way to say “hello,” what topics to avoid in conversations, etc.). Most of the Afghan refugees are in temporary housing in two hotels in south OKC. The hotel provides breakfast, and two meals are brought in by an outside company. The lobby is filled with children playing and men visiting. Outside in the parking lot, kids are playing soccer, riding bikes, and sisters and brothers are carrying smaller siblings on their hips as they run and play.

FIRST VISIT WITH OUR FAMILY OF ELEVEN Ann Knutson and I took Mrs. Salarzal and her 3 younger children to Infant Crisis Services. Through the use of a translation service, Mom was shown how to place the car seat correctly in the car and how to correctly strap the small children in (Google Translate does not support the two main languages that Afghans speak, but fortunately, Catholic Charities subscribes to a service that does). The compassion shown by Miki Farris and her staff was overwhelming. Mrs. Salarzai and the children really appreciated the new car seats, warm coats, and shoes. It goes without saying that the toys and chocolate were also quite a hit. Everyone left feeling valued and happy! Cathy Maxwell While Ann and Cathy took Mrs. Salarzal and her three younger children to Infant Crisis Center for clothes and car seats, Harv Hampton and I had the privilege of spending a couple of hours exploring Will Rogers Park with Mr. Salarzai and the six older children. We were blessed with a beautiful late fall afternoon. The three older girls enjoyed walking the trails and the snacks we brought. The younger children played enthusiastically with the soccer ball and frisbee we brought and loved feeding the fish, ducks and squirrels that call the park home this time of year. While communication was mostly limited to lots of smiles and laughter, Bilal, the Salarzal’s 13-year-old son, appeared to be learning a new word every few minutes. It was great getting the kids and Mr. Salarzal out of the hotel they are staying in to enjoy the park. James Maxwell

WOW! There is so much to say about our new neighbors that it is hard to know where to begin! While Stacey Brim has been taking on the task of getting furniture and other items for the apartment, Ann Knutson has been spending time getting to know our two families. We were given the apartment key a few days before Christmas, but that didn’t slow Stacey down! She and her husband, Christian, arranged for delivery of mattresses, beds and other furniture for December 23rd and then organized it all on Christmas Eve. But that’s not all! They noted repairs needed for apartment maintenance and mopped the outside entrance areas. Brian Dickerson, Doug Riess, Christian and Stacey Brim prayed over and blessed the home and the future occupants when they moved the mattresses in. On December 29, a group of eight gathered at the apartment to hang pictures, arrange furniture, make beds, wash plates and silverware. The cold weather pushed our move-in date to January 5th. We want to give a HUGE thank you to everyone who volunteered on short notice, and not only delivered household items but carried them to the second floor and assembled a complex bunk bed!

BETHANY FIRST NAZARENE We discovered that the husband of our family has a brother who is also moving to the same apartment complex and will live across the hall! Their sponsor church is Bethany First Nazarene. Their contact person reached out to Ann Knutson and the two are planning joint ventures (dare we say ad-ventures) for both families. Plans are underway for us to learn how to use the OKC bus system along with our new neighbors as they do not have transportation yet. They donated coats for our three children, and we are donating bus passes to their family. We have compared notes on what is in a typical Afghan food pantry and where we can purchase ethnic clothing for the women.

AFGHAN ASSISTANCE NEEDED Contact Ann Knutson | annknut@gmail.com 405-323-4292 We have some new opportunities for you to jump in and help refugees become part of our city. In early February, ESL (English as a Second Language) classes will begin at a site in Warr Acres for any of the Afghans who want to participate. Many of the Afghans live in two apartment complexes near NW Expressway and MacArthur Blvd. 1) We have been asked to provide a driver on Wednesday evenings to pick up people at the apartment complexes and take them to the ESL site. The classes are from 6:00-7:30 p.m. The vans are provided by The Spero Project and are 10-14 passenger vans. CDL is not required. 2) The second opportunity is to assist during the ESL classes. NO experience is required; each class will have a trained person in charge. Just think, you could help a group of people learn to talk, “Okie”. Several of us were part of this experience before Christmas. It is a lot of fun and the children are so eager to learn. OTHER TRANSPORTATION AND COMPASSIONATE NEEDS: 3) We need people to take families to Infant Crisis Services (ICS) to get car seats and formula, diapers, etc. We were hoping that Catholic Charities would set up a schedule, but as our families’ case worker said, “We and Spero Project are building an airplane as it’s flying!” Therefore, we are determined to ensure this important task is undertaken! It’s a fulfilling job – taking sweet little ones to be fitted with lifesaving car or booster seats. It can be done on your schedule. It entails picking up the family at either their apartment or a hotel in south OKC,

going to the appointment at ICS, perhaps calling a translator to explain how to correctly install the car seat, and also how to correctly buckle the child in; then see their smiles as Miki Farris gives them a toy and perhaps a piece of candy. The parents are appreciative as they know that car seats are the law in the U.S. as well as it keeps their children safe. 4) Lastly, we need people to work in pairs and take families to health clinics. The caseworker fills all the paperwork out and makes the appointment. It involves picking up the family wherever they are living and taking them to the clinic. Lab work can be completed at any Lab Corps near you. One example: the children are all having a CBC done as well as a lead blood level test. Both tests are extremely important! PLEASE NOTE: Every person who volunteers must complete the training requirements. I can send a link with the requirements to those interested. The training requirements are: two taped Zoom conversations about Afghan culture, online background check, and confidentiality agreement. The background check is at no cost to you and results are available in less than an hour. SKYLINE VOLUNTEER DAY DECEMBER 22, 2021 An exuberant group of adults and children met at Skyline Food Pantry at 9:00 a.m. two days before Christmas. We quickly set about stocking the shelves to be ready when the pantry opened at 1:00 p.m. Some people placed food on shelves, some broke down boxes in the loading dock area, and others sorted food cans before they were placed on the shelves. Over 20 people made fast work of it. It was a fun, task-completion activity which showed that food insecurity does indeed exist in Oklahoma City. One middle-schooler proudly announced that there were eight brands of corn on the shelves! In another part of Skyline, people were able to select gifts for the children in their family. Items on tables were divided into games, puzzles, infants, etc. Four items per child could be selected. When we first arrived, we were given a short talk about the mission and history of Skyline in the gift room. The Skyline staff always makes us feel welcome and that we are providing a valuable service. It was fun, filled a need, and a good conversation starter with children – not a bad way to spend 3 hours! The weekend of Walk Through Bethlehem was incredible! With so many people and families passing through the “city gates” of Bethlehem, I heard numerous positive responses to this fabulous event. Our guests, both young and old alike, were grateful to experience Bethlehem in this unique way. One of my favorite memories from this weekend happened on Sunday towards the end of the night when a family with two small kids came through. They stopped by the camels and I was telling them about Nebby and Nebo. The older of the two kids, a girl, had been petting the camels and was a little awestruck by them. I knew it was getting late and they wouldn’t have a whole lot of time to complete all the activities in the village. The parents were trying to get the little girl to leave the camels and to continue their adventure through Bethlehem, and I told her that she needed to go check out all the booths because there were some fun things happening in the rest

of Bethlehem. She got a serious look on her face as she turned to me and whispered, “Will Jesus be here?” I smiled and assured her that Jesus would be there. She got a huge grin on her face and excitedly grabbed her mom’s hand and started pulling her into the village exclaiming, “Jesus is here!” I thought her response to Walk Through Bethlehem was wrapped up perfectly in that one simple statement. Despite all the fun activities such as petting live animals, fishing, making crafts in Hebrew School, and so much more, the real reason why we had this weekend event and why we celebrate Christmas is because Jesus is here! I am so thankful to be a part of our church family that wants to share the love of Jesus to our community and to be a light in a world that is often dark. We are planting those seeds of faith and hope in the lives of everyone we encounter.

FEBRUARY HAPPENINGS... IT’S A PARTY!

SUNDAYS IN FEBRUARY AGES 3 YEARS THROUGH KINDERGARTEN Did you know there are over 100 million love songs? Why so much interest in love? Well, it could be because God is love. And, God made every person in His image. We were literally made by love, to love and to be loved! That is why Jesus loves everyone, and why He taught us how we can love everyone, too. Jesus gave us so many examples of loving everyone while He was on earth, and we get to share them with our preschoolers this month. Jesus loves everyone, and we can love everyone like Jesus—that is what we want preschoolers to know. And, there’s no better time in our world for children to hear this powerful truth. So, grab a party hat and a handful of confetti and let’s get the party started! Our memory verse this month comes from 1 Corinthians 16:14 and says, “Do everything in love.” This month, we will learn about how Jesus loves everyone and loves people everywhere. Jesus loves people even when they do something wrong. We can love like Jesus. Who does Jesus love? Jesus loves everyone!

ON MY BLOCK: CARE FOR THE PEOPLE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD SUNDAYS IN FEBRUARY GRADES 1-5

This month, we will learn about the connection between COMPASSION and God’s character, as shown through God’s big story. Compassion is caring enough to do something about someone else’s need. God’s compassion for us led to the greatest act of love the world had ever seen. God sent Jesus to rescue us. We reflect God’s compassion when we care about others and work to make things right. Our memory verse comes from Micah 6:8 and says, “The Lord has shown you what is good. He has told you what he requires of you. You must act with justice. You must love to show mercy. And you must be humble as you live in the sight of your God.” We will learn that following Jesus means caring about others. We will discuss how to show others that they matter and how to use what we have to help others. We can make time to help others. We can’t wait to see you this month!

SUNDAY MORNINGS WITH SERVANT KIDS Servant Kids meets in person each Sunday morning at 9:30 and/or 11:00 a.m. Two-hour programming is available once again. The same topic will be covered all morning long, but each hour will have different activities and videos to reinforce the lesson. This is a great option for parents who want to attend both a class and worship service on Sunday mornings. Drop your kids off between 9:15-9:30 a.m. and pick them up again at noon! Elementary kids in grades first through fifth meet in The Point Student Center (south side of church), and kids in kindergarten, preschool, or who are nursery-aged (2 and under) meet downstairs. Virtual options are available on our website each week. If you can’t make it in person on a Sunday morning, check out the lessons and videos online!

SERVANT STUDENTS 6TH - 12TH GRADE

SALT AND LIGHT: A NIGHT OF VISION Servant Student programming is finally back in action this year and ready to take on 2022. As we began, we didn’t want to just dive straight into a sermon series; rather, we wanted to begin by sharing what we believe God has placed on our hearts for Servant Students. So, for the final Wednesday of January, we began with a Night of Vision.

During this night, we laughed a ton, we played some hilarious games, and just enjoyed being together once again. The evening shifted halfway through as Skyler

and I took the stage to talk about what we had been praying about for this ministry. We know that these students love being together – they love small group and we love that they love small group. But in this love of being together and growing our faith, we challenged students to go beyond. We want to challenge these students to put their faith into action – to see themselves as more than just students who show up to church on a Sunday morning and Wednesday night. Rather, we want them to see themselves as salt and light.

Matthew 5:13-16 says: “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Salt enhances the flavor. Light draws attention. We want our students, through the work of the Holy Spirit, we want to do just that. We see our students bringing betterment to this world while drawing attention to the goodness of Jesus Christ through their actions. We see our students loving, supporting, and serving others in a culture that encourages selfishness. We see our students putting their faith in God and caring for their neighbor. By this they will go beyond simply their small groups into this world so that we all glorify our Father in heaven. SALT AND LIGHT

WEDNESDAY NIGHTS 6:30-8:00pm

One of the ways we want to inspire our students to be that salt and light in this world is by continuing to support our school-year nonprofit: Infant Crisis Services. One of this ministry’s greatest needs is diapers, so we want to help in supporting this incredible local mission. Servant Students will take the next semester to take on a challenge we know is possible: collecting one million diapers. Yes, you read that right: Servant Students will collect one million diapers for Infant Crisis Services this semester. We are doing this for students to see that when we work together towards a goal, God shows up in huge ways! We know that there are so many people right here in our community who need to experience the love of Jesus through the provision of baby products like diapers. Servant Students want to be part of shining that light in a big way! Want to help us meet our goal? CONFIRMATION 2022 HAS BEGUN! This semester, we are back on track with current 8th graders being the students going through Confirmation. Sunday, January 30th was our first session for the new class. We were blessed with the opportunity to be recognized and prayed over in the 11:00 Modern Worship service as we began this journey together. This semester will be full of opportunity for our students. Embedded in the Confirmation experience, we will be having a mission weekend in April that students are encouraged to be a part of, going off campus to tour the Oklahoma City Memorial in downtown, and experiencing worship in a different setting at All Souls Episcopal Church in Nichols Hills. Our greatest hope from Confirmation is that our students begin to recognize the story that God is writing for them, and that they end Confirmation by saying “YES” to God’s mission for their lives. Our theme verse for this semester is John 7:37-38, “On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.’” We ask that you would be praying over these students as they begin this transformational journey with one another and with Christ. Students going through Confirmation are: Blakely Russell, Sydnee Henson, Nelson Pigg, Sarah Sahmaunt, Lila Goodman, Landon Gaske, Drew Reed, Rachel Weber, Charles Cockrill, Nathan Aller, Evan Meadows, and Avery Stone. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP FOR SPRING 2022 Have you experienced the death of a loved one? If so, we invite you to be part of our Grief Support Group, beginning on Thursday, March 3, 2022. We’ll meet in person. Face masks will be recommended but not required. The course will last for 13 weeks, going through June 9. We’ll meet each Thursday morning (10:00-11:30) in the South Conference Room at Church of the Servant. Perhaps it was just recently that you experienced the loss of a loved one...or maybe you’ve been on your journey of grief for a long time. Either way, we think you’ll find it quite helpful to connect with others and benefit from mutual support. We utilize the Grief Share curriculum, which is Christian-based. There’s a helpful video each time, and there’s always plenty of time for sharing and discussion. There’s no cost for the course, and each participant will receive a complimentary workbook. If you’d like to register for the group, just call Vicki Roberds at 405-728-4738 or email her at vroberds@churchoftheservant.com. Registration never closes, so you can join us for any or all of the meetings, and it’s never too late to sign up.

It is our heartfelt desire to prayerfully attend to members of our church family in times of sickness and death as well as on those especially joyous occasions We count on each of our members to keep us apprised of events as they occur. Remember that a call to the Care Center is ALWAYS welcome when you learn of a death, hospitalization, birth, or specific need for prayer. Please don’t assume that just because you have been informed, the Care Center has the news. When you go to the hospital and list Church of the Servant as your church home, you may assume the church will be notified. This is NOT the case. During hard times in life, we need all the love and support we can get – both from God and others. In fact, God often manifests His presence through others! Being “God’s heart and hands” is the very purpose of our Care Ministry. We have many ways to minister to Church of the Servant’s families: • Our Care Chaplains • Various support groups • Hospital and home visits • Encouraging care notes • Intercessory prayer We also provide care and support during joyous times when a new baby is born, such as gift basket!

DO YOU KNIT? CROCHET? CHAT? On Tuesdays, we gather at Noon in 13.2 Coffee Shop. We have projects we work on, hats for preemies, blankets for new babies in our church family, and sometimes our own projects. We have great fellowship and many laughs! Everyone is welcome to join us!
