Believe s Belong s Become The “I Am…” Middle School Fall Retreat!

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalms 139:14

This was the focus of the Middle School Fall Retreat which was held at Canyon Camp last weekend. Sixty-two sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students had not just an amazing time with friends, but were blessed as they learned they are truly God’s masterpiece. We live in a world that loves to label people, and that influences what we think of ourselves. One of our students said, “I have never really thought that hard about my identity. I didn’t realize how fake I can be to fit in.

Most importantly, I didn’t realize how much I actually label people myself. This weekend was an awesome time to reflect and think about who I really am and who I want to be.”

Wow! What would our world look like if we stopped labeling others and spent more time reflecting on who God made us to be? We are so thankful to be “fearfully and wonderfully made”. We are thankful for how God works in helping us realize that our identity is in Him. Hearts were softened this weekend and stronger friendships were made as God worked in the lives of our students.

We are so thankful to our Student Ministries staff and all of the leaders who made this weekend possible. They led small groups; played in the worship band; gave the messages; and were truly used by God to influence the identity of our students!

Body and Soul Dance Blast Come visit a class to try it out!

Body & Soul is “where faith and fitness meet.” It is an international nonprofit fitness organization led by national fitness leader Jeannie Blocher. Founded in 1981, Body & Soul offers cardio/strength, boot camp, power strength, basic & beyond, dance blast and strength/flexibility workouts.

The Dance Blast class is for women and will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:35 a.m. to 11:35 a.m. in the youth auditorium. Nursery is provided on Tuesdays.

ACE certified instructors lead the workout, providing options for beginners. Each class begins with prayer, and the energetic Christian music will inspire all to get moving, no matter what fitness level we are.

Dance Blast is the newest cardio and toning workout. The high energy and fun moves feature Jive, Cumbia, Latin, Reggaeton, Middle Eastern, the Waltz, and more. Intermittent intensity levels paired with dynamic toning and stretching provide a fun exercise experience.

Walk-ins are welcome to come and see if this might be a way for you to experience faith and fitness together.

Single Parent Support Network of Oklahoma and Church of the Servant hosts

“Queen for a Day “

Saturday, September 29 This is the 8th year that single mothers from all over OKC have been nominated to be a queen for a day. These women will be blessed with pampering, life advice, spiritual guidance and fellowship, and sharing with other women. The women will also visit the “boutique” where a consultant will help them put together a smart business casual outfit to take home with them. These outfits will come from other women who donate them. If you have a gently-used business casual outfit or accessories to donate, you can bring them to the women’s ministry office by Sept 28. All sizes are needed.

Women’s ministry is helping to make this day a success and Dr. Robyn Goggs is needing some help from you. There are several ways to be involved.

Be available to help serve breakfast here at the church from 7:30-9am.

Help to make breakfast casseroles and breakfast goods and deliver them that morning.

Make a cake or pie for the lunch dessert where we will serve 450.

Help to plate up desserts that morning before lunch.

Donate a business casual outfit and/or accessories to the Queen for a Day boutique.

Ukraine Mission Team

In May 2006, Church of the Servant entered into a covenant to support three Methodist Churches in the western Ukraine. Since 2006, this church has sent over $100,000 for pastor support and salaries and construction costs of a new church building, and has sent 4 teams to assist. This week the fifth team will travel to Perechyn, Ukraine to see the church building completed.

Through your fish offerings, donations and support, the whole congregation has been a part of bringing this to completion. This week as a body of believers let us be in prayer for the leadership and safety of this team as they bless and dedicate the new church and receive a blessing from the ministry that is taking place there.

Our team members are: Stan Mortimer, Leroy Ball, Pat McGarrity, Pam Bishop, Betty Bohan, David Brown, Tim and Pam Fagan, Sandy Ratzlaff, and Susan Sutter.

Car Seat Fitting will be held on this Saturday, September 15. If you need to have a car seat fitted or know someone who needs a car seat, please invite them to come have their own seat fitted properly; or if they need a seat, the ministry can provide one.

Recipient must be a primary care giver of child and child needs to be present to receive a seat.

Fit to Serve 5K

Registration has begun for the Third Annual Fit to Serve 5k and One-Mile Fun Walk on Sunday, September 30 at 4 p.m. at Gaillardia Country Club. The race will be capped at 400 runners, so please plan to register early!

Each year a ministry related to children is selected to be the focus of this mission run. Your participation this year will help the Whiz Kids ministry as we continue to be “big feet running for little feet�.

We want to build enthusiasm on the day by inviting everyone to wear running shoes to church on the morning, September 30!

A golden shoe award will be given to the Sunday School Class with the highest percentage of participation and to the class with the highest monetary donation. That afternoon we will gather and share in the run/walk, then be provided a meal by Gaillardia on the golf green as the awards are presented.

Scheduled Road Closings

As a part of the city’s MacArthur Blvd widening project, there will be a road closing on September 14-16. With this closing, access from the North will be restricted, so we will need to enter and exit the church from the South. Despite these inconveniences, our regularly scheduled programming remains in effect. Thank you for your patience!

Donate Your Used Smart Phones

Do you have any cell phones lying around that you don’t know what to do with? If so, we encourage you to donate to the church your used smart phones such as iPhones, Androids and Blackberry’s to be utilized for 911 purposes across the United States.

Phones that aren’t used will be re-sold and all proceeds will go directly to Church of the Servant. To donate, just drop them in the collection box located by the Community Hall and Main Office area.

Signup for Shooting Sporting Clays

Starting this Sunday, September 16, you can sign up at the Welcome Center to meet with a group of men and women from the church to shoot sporting clays. The group will meet at Silverleaf Gun Range

by Guthrie on October 6 at 9:00 a.m. The shoot will be from 9:30-11:30, and the cost is approximately $25 per person, with individuals furnishing their own gun and shells. Guns can also be rented and shells can be purchased at the gun range for an additional cost. Sign up Sunday or call the church office at 7214141 to join the fun and fellowship!

Grace Based Parenting Class Offered This Fall

This fall Children’s Ministries and Young Adult ministries will be partnering together to offer a parenting class called Grace Based Parenting that is designed specifically for parents with children nursery age to 5th grade. This incredible class is a five-week study of the book Grace Based Parenting by Dr. Tim Kimmel and will be lead by Senior Minister, Dr. Robert Gorrell, and by Director of Young Adults, John Gilstrap. The class is all about learning to see ourselves and our children through God’s limitless tenderness and discovering how to raise our kids the way God raises us. Grace based parenting will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 in Community Hall on October 3, 10, 17, 24, and November 7. You can pick up a registration at the Welcome Center or download one at www. churchoftheservant.com. Are You Dealing with An Aging Medical Situation?

On Thursday, October 25, the church will co-sponsor a seminar to address aging issues that you or a loved one may be dealing with - issues such as Alzheimer’s, Balance, Home Health, Residential or Rehab Facilities, Senior Daycare, Veterans Affairs. The seminar is free and will be held in the Centrum from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Pre-registration is requested, which you can do by signing up at the Welcome Center on Sunday, or by calling Vicki in the Care Center at 728-4735.

Come join us for some fun as we learn more about the fascinating game of Bridge. The subjects to be covered are: Rebids, Opening Leads, Take-Out Double, Suit Overcall, Preemptive Bids, Stayman Convention, Opening Strong Two Bids, and Slam Bidding. Buck and a Bible

John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, was very conscientious about the way he spent his time. In fact, he preached an entire sermon on the concept of “redeeming the time” he was given by God. In this message he described an experiment he undertook to determine just how much sleep he truly needed each night in order to properly function. As Wesley saw it, any extra time he found could be spent in prayer and study and would be time redeemed for the Kingdom.

Did you know that every Tuesday morning from 6:30-7:30 a.m. Church of the Servant has a group of men who redeem that early morning hour by gathering for fellowship and Bible study? If you want to spend more time with other Christian men while studying God’s word, you should set aside this hour each week and join us for Buck and a Bible.

This strong group of Christian men has been meeting for over eight years, beginning with about half a dozen men and continuing now as a regular group of around fifty men. Coffee, donuts, and fresh muffins are provided (that’s what the “buck” is for) and an hour is spent in study and conversation. Previously the men have studied the life of David, the letter to the Colossians, Revelation, Genesis, Matthew, and Romans. The current study, led by Dr. Matt Judkins, is on the Gospel of John. No sign up is needed – simply show up! We’re in Community Hall, and we look forward to seeing you bright and early next Tuesday morning as we “redeem the time” together!

Would You Like to Help Fight Cancer?

The American Cancer Society will soon conduct a cancer prevention study (unpaid), which will focus on data gathered from people in Oklahoma who have never been diagnosed with cancer and are between the ages of 30 and 65. This will be a long-term study, but after the initial appointment, the periodic follow-up surveys will be mailed or emailed to participants every 2 to 3 years. It’s easy to participate, as the enrollment process conducted during your appointment will include simple things like a blood draw. If you’re interested in making a difference in such research, go to CancerStudyOK. org or call 1-888-604-5888. They can assign you an appointment right here at Church of the Servant for the morning of Thursday, September 20. Alternatively, they can set your appointment for a different time at a different location around the metro.

Church of the Servant’s annual Fall Festival is just around the corner. On Friday October 26 from 6:00-8:30 we will transform the church into a carnival midway complete with clowns, food, games, candy, inflatables, face painting, and more! Please mark your calendar and plan to bring your family, friends, and neighbors to this great event!
