Servant 923 is Moving to the Centrum!

Here at Church of the Servant, we have multiple opportunities to connect with God through worship. Servant 923 is our modern worship gathering, led by Dr. Matt Judkins and John Gilstrap. Servant 923 not only indicates the time this community meets (9:23AM each Sunday), but also serves as a reminder of Christ’s calling in Luke 9:23, where we hear Jesus say, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

Each week in Servant 923, men, women, students, and children are challenged to become disciples of Jesus Christ through modern worship songs, video, and a message grounded in Scripture. Just as our mission statement says, these are “ordinary people with an extraordinary mission.”

At this point Servant 923 has reached capacity in the Chapel of the Cross where it currently worships.

While we celebrate this milestone, we also need room to grow as we keep intentionally challenging our community to reach out to ordinary men and women who have yet to experience God’s transforming love and grace. As a result, on Sunday, September 9, Servant 923 will be relocating to the Centrum, which is located across the Concourse from our coffee shop and hospitality area, 13.2. This will increase the worship capacity for this community in a significant way and provide space for us to continue inviting our friends, relatives, and neighbors to connect with God and grow as followers of Jesus by the power of God’s Holy Spirit.

This is an amazing time to be a part of Church of the Servant as we continue to grow and work together with God to help ordinary people believe in Jesus Christ, belong to a community of faith, and become Christ’s servants in the world!

THE AMAZING FAITHS PROJECT: A CHANCE FOR CHRISTIANS TO EXPERIENCE “NEIGHBORING” IN OKLAHOMA CITY WITH PERSONS OF OTHER FAITH TRADITIONS Three years ago some members of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church pioneered in bringing the Amazing Faiths Project to Oklahoma City. Many members of St. Luke’s participated in the Amazing Faiths Dinner Dialogues that puts persons of diverse faith traditions together in hosts’ homes to enjoy three meals, usually in November, February and late spring and to talk and listen to one another share our personal faith experience. Two rules apply: (1) No arguing doctrine, or beliefs with each other; and, (2) no proselytizing, seeking to convert one another.

Participants are to just listen and receive and offer the gift of friendship with people with whom we might otherwise never make meaningful contact and who name Oklahoma their home.

Straining under the weight of the Project’s success, St. Luke’s was pleased when The Interfaith Alliance of Oklahoma offered to assume responsibility for the Project. My wife, Linda, and I participated in the Dinner Dialogues with great delight this past year.

There were some 20 groups meeting at different homes. We hosted one of the three dinner (potluck) dialogues in our home. Dr. Carl Rubenstein, a Cardiologist at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital and

active member of the Temple B’Nai Israel, The Jewish Reform Congregation here in Oklahoma City and the Interfaith Alliance, and I co-moderated the sharing. Our group consisted of two Muslim couples, a Hindu couple, The Rubenstein’s, a Disciples’ of Christ couple, a Unitarian couple, and one other Methodist beside Linda and me.

The Dinner Dialogues began back in September 2006 as a collaborative project between the Mayor’s Office of the City of Houston, the Center for Religious Tolerance at Rice University, and Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston. The Amazing Faiths Project is now active in more than ten American cities. With the leadership of Dr. Jill Carroll, Religions Professor at Rice University and her team, the dinner dialogue design was created. The sharing design consists of a stack of cards with questions. Each person takes one, answers the question, or chooses another question from the stack, or chooses to pass. The sharing is to be from one’s life experience rather than from some doctrinal formula one might have learned in a catechism class. Such questions as: “When did you experience God being really close to you? When did you experience God being far away from you?

From your faith context and journey, how have you experienced or sought to make sense out of evil and suffering in this world?” These and many others questions had us sharing at very personal and poignant levels. Linda’s comments seemed to speak for all of our group: “Very quickly, it seemed as if we had known each other for a long time and the experiences of sharing and listening to each other respectfully seemed to bridge differences and facilitate friendships. I thought I was in a good ole’ Methodist meeting because I was so touched as people talked about their relationship to God.” And, in the words of Jacob in Genesis, we both felt “Surely the Lord was in this place.”

Skyline Food Pantry Month Exceeds Expectations!

During the month of August we were asked to bring food for the Skyline 8th Street Food Pantry. Every Monday morning this past month the grocery carts have been overflowing because of your generosity! Thank you for answering the call! The special fish appeal offering that was taken in all services on August 19 was $13,067.05. This gift will enable Skyline to feed more people and ensure that there is food to finish the end of the year. Church of the Servant, you are making a difference in Oklahoma City! Thank you!

Next Car Seat Fitting Event will be held on Saturday, September 15. If you need to have a car seat fitted or know someone who needs a car seat, please let them know this date.

Thank you for a Successful Servant Day!

The weather was beautiful as 253 of us gathered to serve our community at 13 different agencies and organizations. We were painting, trimming trees, gardening, cleaning, shoveling, building, organizing, packing food, and being the body of Christ together! Forty-five children and their parents stayed at the church and made 225 bus driver bags for all the drivers in our local districts. They also made bread that will go to feed the homeless that Grace Fellowship ministers to weekly. Special thanks to Evan Brown as chairperson of the day and all of the Missions Committee for their leadership as liaisons to the agencies. Look for pictures in the next issue!

Fit to Serve Sponsors

The Mission Council is seeking businesses that would sponsor the Third Annual Fit to Serve 5K Mission Run. Our church people who are out in the community are our best resources for finding the sponsors we need to make this event for mission a success. The race will be Sunday, Sept 30 at 4 p.m. at the Gaillardia Country Club. This will be first of its kind held at that location. Sponsorship begins at $250 to get a name on the t-shirts; a $500 sponsorship includes name on t-shirts, banner, posters, and 4 spots in the run; $1000 and up donations include all those, plus an advertising spot at Gaillardia on the day of the event. The race this year will benefit the Whiz Kids literacy ministry for children, in which many of our congregation serve. Jen Hatmaker Brings the House Down at Girls’ Night Out!

The room was filled with anticipation and excitement as Austin, TX speaker and author, Jen Hatmaker, took the stage Friday night for our first annual Girls’ Night Out. Women from all over our state came to hear her speak. She made us laugh with her humor, cry with real stories of the ministry she and her husband, Brandon are doing with the homeless in the heart of downtown Austin, and put before us a great challenge to be the church by being good neighbors. She asked us to live the Gospel in a way so that non-Christians would not just know what Christians are against, but would know the love of Christ we are trying to live. She was authentic and powerful as she spoke the truth of discipleship to us. A huge thank you to the 923 worship band and to the Friday young mom’s Bible Study group who organized and led the evening, and to Mary Jessup for her hard work on the administrative end. We look forward to hosting another Girls’ Night Out 2013!

Women’s Fall Offerings Continues Registration through September 9 Studies Begin the Week of September 10 Groups are being offered on Monday and Wednesday evenings, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings.

There is something on offer for every woman!

Each year almost 400 women in our congregation participate in a Bible study or small group on a weekly basis.

Many of these women would testify to the great support and faith that these experiences have added to their lives.

Why not consider joining one this Fall? Women’s Ministries will begin the Fall Offerings classes, including Bible Studies, Scrapbooking, Quilting, and Body and Soul Exercise Classes (a new addition this fall!) the week of Sept 10. Brochures are out and the registration table will be in the Concourse. If you are coming back to a group, please come by the table to confirm. New Fitness Class: Body and Soul Dance Blast

Body & Soul is “where faith and fitness meet.” It is an international nonprofit fitness organization led by national fitness leader Jeannie Blocher. Founded in 1981, Body & Soul offers cardio/strength, boot camp, power strength, basic & beyond, dance blast and strength/flexibility workouts.

The Dance Blast class is for women and will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:35 a.m. to 11:35 a.m. ACE certified instructors lead the workout providing options for beginners. Each class begins with prayer, and the energetic Christian music will inspire all to get moving, no matter what fitness level we are.

Dance Blast is the newest cardio and toning workout. The high energy and fun moves feature Jive, Cumbia, Latin, Reggaeton, Middle Eastern, the Waltz, and more. Intermittent intensity levels paired with dynamic toning and stretching provide a fun exercise experience. Enrollment is now under way and will be limited to ensure appropriate instructor/participant ratios.

This Is the Year to Get Into a Disciple Bible Study!

Wouldn’t you love to have a better understanding of your Bible and how it all fits together? Make this the year to get involved in a Bible study. Beginning this fall, we have four outstanding Bible studies from which to choose!

Disciple I, “Becoming Disciples through Bible Study”, is an overview of both the Old and New Testaments. Over the course of two 10-week sessions, you will not only gain information which will help you understand your bible, you will begin to see how God’s word can transform your life. Rev. Randy Shrauner is leading this study.

Disciple II, “Into the Word into the World”, focuses on four key books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts. This study will take you deeper into the Scripture. This is the next step for those who have taken Disciple I. Randy and Lainey Robinson are leading this study.

Disciple III, “Remember Who You Are”, focuses on the connection between memory and identity as the people of God. Participants will read the major and minor Old Testament prophets, with the exception of Daniel, as well as the thirteen letters traditionally attributed to Paul. Don Ellis is leading this study.

Disciple IV, “Under the Trees of Life”, concentrates on the Writings (Old Testament books not in the Torah or the Prophets), the Gospel of John, and Revelation. Present through the entire study is the sense of living toward completion – toward the climax of the message and the promise, extravagantly pictured in the Revelation. Blair Schoeb is leading this study.

Each of these Bible studies will meet Sundays from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. for two 10-week sessions beginning Sunday, September 9, through November 18. Each will resume Sunday, January 6, 2013 and end March 10. Registration begins Sunday, August 12.

You can register at the registration tables in the Concourse on Sunday mornings or online at www.churchoftheservant.com. The fee for each study is $35 which includes the study manual. Childcare is provided for children up to 10 years of age.

Journey With Kings This Fall!

Have you ever thought, “How do those stories in the Old Testament relate to me?” Through the stories in I & II Kings, God teaches us how to live individually and collectively as a nation. Explore these fascinating stories of the few “good” and the many “not so good” kings and draw your own conclusion about the importance of godly living.

By journeying with the kings of Israel, you’ll explore the glory days with prophets, priests and well-known Bible characters such as the Queen of Sheba, Elijah, Isaiah and Jezebel. Exciting life lessons will emerge making this a journey well worth the travel.

To understand God’s Word better and know how it personally applies to you requires daily commitment to his Word. Maturity can then grow and produce a light for others in a dark world. Each week we will reflect on what we have read, share our insights together, and pray.

Linda Shaw, a member of Church of the Servant, is the author of “A Journey With Kings”. She will be teaching this 10-week study on Wednesdays beginning September 12 through November 14. Scheduled Road Closings

As a part of the city’s MacArthur widening project there are two scheduled road closings: The first is set for the weekend of September 7-9. This first closing will affect the road directly in front of Church of the Servant. Access will be available to all of our entrances from the North and the South.

The second closing is scheduled for the following weekend - September 14-16. With this second closing, access from the North will be restricted, so we will need to enter and exit the church from the South. Despite these inconveniences, our regularly scheduled programming remains in effect. Thank you for your patience!

Beyond the Broken Heart Begins Aug. 28

How do you understand grief when your heart is broken by the death of a loved one? Come and find support, advice for living, and some answers about how to foster healing in your own grief journey. This fall at Church of the Servant we will offer a course using a great resource called Beyond the Broken Heart. It’s a 10-week support group for anyone who is grieving the loss of a loved one. There will be a video segment (10-12 minutes) at each session. The leader for the group will be Rev. Tim Travers, Minister of Congregational Care. We’ll meet each Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 in South Adult room 1-2. The first session is August 28 and the last session is October 30. Each participant will need a workbook ($10.00 each). If you know you can’t come to the sessions (but would still like to benefit from using the book), just let us know. It’s not too late to join the group! Grace Based Parenting Class Offered This Fall

This fall Children’s Ministries and Young Adult ministries will be partnering together to offer a parenting class called Grace Based Parenting that is designed specifically for parents with children nursery age to 5th grade. This incredible class is a five-week study of the book Grace Based Parenting by Dr. Tim Kimmel and will be lead by Senior Minister, Dr. Robert Gorrell, and by Director of Young Adults, John Gilstrap. The class is all about learning to see ourselves and our children through God’s limitless tenderness and discovering how to raise our kids the way God raises us. Grace based parenting will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 in Community Hall on October 3, 10, 17, 24, and November 7. Rebuilding When Your Relationship Ends

Are you trying to rebuild your life after a break-up or divorce, or perhaps after the death of a spouse? If so, we encourage you to consider the seminar called, “Rebuilding When Your Relationship Ends”. This 10week seminar is being facilitated by longtime Rebuilding leader Steve DeQuevedo, Licenses Professional Counselor, and Bob Tehan, a past participant and facilitator for the seminar. The class will meet each Thursday from 6:45 – 9:00 p.m. beginning September 13 and ending November 15. Give Your Relationship a Tune-up or Complete Overhaul with “GETTING THE LOVE YOU WANT” WORKSHOP

Drs. Curtis and Linda Nigh, educators and clinicians in the field of marriage and family studies for over thirty years, believe that we can’t give love to our partner in a meaningful way without being transformed ourselves.

The “Getting the Love You Want” workshop is designed for couples in all stages of their relationship from contemplating marriage through retirement and beyond. The workshop will focus on fostering awareness, building skills for communicating and resolving conflicts, strengthening couple commitment, and re-romanticizing the relationship through very practical and strategic behaviors.

Over a thousand couples have gone through the Nigh’s “Getting the Love You Want” workshop in the past thirty years. Plan to attend the next workshop - Friday, September 7 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. and Saturday, September 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Nigh home. BOY SCOUT TROOP 177

This was another busy month for BSA Troop 177! After our fun trip to Camp Alexander near Lake George in Colorado for summer camp in July, we decided to go the opposite way to southeast Oklahoma. For our August campout, we headed to the Mountain Fork River near Broken Bow, Oklahoma, for a canoeing adventure! Many of the scouts had never canoed before, so we had a canoeing practice at Lake Overholser a few days before to get ready.

At the end of July, we hosted our Court of Honor. A Court of Honor is our rank advancement ceremony, and we had many scouts advance!

On Sunday, September 9, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Church of the Servant, our troop is having an Open House and you are invited to visit! It’s a “Come and Go” event for families and all boys ages 11 to15 who are interested in scouting. I’m sure it will be a lot of fun! We will play Olympic themed games for prizes and there will even be a model campsite featuring a tower, fence, and gate! Snacks and drinks will be provided. What’s Happening this Fall in High School Ministries?

Wednesday Night Programming

Disciple Group Registrations are out!

D Groups, formally known as “Small Groups”, are genderbased groups that meet weekly with caring adults of the same gender. The D Group is a place to be known and cared for, a place to invest your life, and a place to learn what it means to be more like Christ. Beginning on September 12, D Groups will take place on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at various meeting spaces throughout the church. Registrations are due Sunday, September 2.

D Group Leader Training!

Leader training for D Group leaders will take place on Wednesday, September 5 at the Point! Dinner will be provided!

It starts at 6:30 and will end no later than 8:00 p.m.

High School Sunday Night Programs

We will meet at the Point from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on Sunday evenings beginning with Old School on Sept 16. Old School is a place to build community with the bigger body. We believe that God intends for us to live in community with other people in order to build and encourage one another to be more like Christ.

We will do this through fun games and studying the Scripture as a group.

Encounter is a worship service that will occur once a month in place of Old School on Sunday evenings.

Middle School Ministries Is Gearing Up for the Fall!

Middle School Ministries is taking a short break from Wednesday night programming on Wednesdays, August 29 and September 5.

Our big kickoff is the “I AM” Fall Retreat September 7-9 at Canyon Camp. The registrations are out and available on the Middle School Student Ministries Webpage, www.churchoftheservant.com, or at The Point. The registration deadline is September 2! Get your registration in to Dana soon!

We will begin our Wednesday night program, called “The Garage,” on September 12. From 6:30-8:00 p.m. we will meet for games and Disciple Groups or D-Groups (formerly known as Small Groups). Sign up today!! D-Groups are age- and gender- based. Registration forms will be on the website and at The Point.

A brand new program is starting this fall called J.A.M. It is an acronym for “Jesus And Me.” Every Sunday night, beginning September 16, we will meet together and dig into God’s Word and how it applies to our lives. J.A.M. will meet from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Middle School room.
