This Sunday we will be taking a Special Fish Offering for the Skyline Food Pantry. Through its relationship with the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank, Skyline has the opportunity to purchase food at discounted rates to supplement the food that is donated by churches. In Oklahoma, one in four children is at risk for hunger every day. Skyline is working to change this. Our offering will go to purchase food and continue the programs that Skyline offers to help people learn to make a better life for their family. Please mark your calendar for this Special Fish Appeal and help us address hunger in Oklahoma.

Doing God’s Will When You Don’t Want To Do God’s Will…

Steven C. Walker wrote something I found very helpful:

When it comes to biblical humor, we miss the point. In fact, we mostly miss the humor. The Bible is the last place most modern readers would find a laugh. And the main reason we fail to find humor there is that the Bible is the last place we’d look. Given how persistently humor smiles and chuckles and sometimes laughs right out loud in virtually every book of the Bible, it’s remarkable how consistently we manage to overlook it. It’s also unfortunate. Humor informs biblical texts. To miss the humor of the Bible is to miss not only much of its fun, but much of its meaning.

Take, for example, Jonah. Every scene in this prophetic book invites a smile — the picture of the reluctant prophet, for instance, fresh from the Dr. Robert Gorrell belly of the whale: reeking of whale vomit, trailing seaweed and barnacles and old fishheads, bleached of all his color by gastric juices, robe shrunk up to his knees and elbows, way bad hair day, not only disheveled but seriously disgruntled, trudging ornery into Nineveh muttering his message of doom in a language the Ninevites can’t even understand.i

People often ask me how to do God’s will. Especially - how do you do God’s will in a difficult situation? I think about Jonah whom God asked to preach to his worst enemies, the people of Nineveh.

How do you do God’s will when you really don’t want to do God’s will?

The number one tool that helps me do God’s will is humor. Why? Because God is always asking me to go to Nineveh. And the truth is, that if we try to do God’s will, at some point we are going to end up just like Jonah—covered in fish burp! It is inevitable. Doing God’s will, you see, is a messy business. You are always being asked to go to Nineveh. The journey is long and risky. And, to be honest, I usually start the journey thinking I know more than God about how to get there. I follow my plan, not God’s.

Till it happens…I find myself in a storm. Then I am swallowed by a monster and praying to God for help. The good news is that God always shows up. We have a laugh together. Every time I end up covered in fish vomit I remember I have to make the journey according to God’s plan, not my plan.

And only then am I ready for Nineveh.…

Servant Day

Saturday, August 25

Registration continues through Sunday, August 19 in the Concourse.

Servant Day is an annual tradition in the life of Church of the Servant where we gather to eat breakfast, share a devotional, and go into our community and serve. It is a day in our congregation that crosses all ages and demographics because our common goal is mission in the name of Jesus Christ. It is a fun day for parents and children, Sunday school classes, small groups, families, friends and individuals to join in making a difference in our community. This year we will be serving at Skyline McGee Center, ChildSHARE, Celebrations Preschool, Skyline Food Bank, OK Regional Food Bank, Penn Avenue Redemption Church, St. John’s UMC, Infant Crisis Services, Grace Fellowship, NSO, Servant Hands, and Exodus House.

There will also be a children’s mission workshop here at the church for children age 5-10 to introduce them to missions and to work on projects. There is a nursery for children under age 5, but children must be registered in advance at the sign-up table in the Concourse.

Breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. for $3.50 per person, then we will head to our projects where we will work from 9 a.m. until noon.

August Food Drive for the Skyline Food Pantry

What a blessing it has been to see our grocery carts around the church full each Sunday, as you are responding to the needs of hungry people in OKC! At this time of year the donations get lower and the need gets higher. During August we are drawing awareness to just how great the need is and asking everyone to be part of getting the pantry supplied through the end of the year. See the good work Skyline is doing with its resources:

• Skyline can stretch all donations and feed a family of 4 for 4 days with just $3.85!

• Last year, the Skyline food pantry served 7,076 families and 17,996 individuals.

• During the first half of this year, the Skyline food pantry has already served 3,423 families and 8,199 individuals - about 65 people every day!

• The greatest needs right now are: Peanut Butter (16oz), Canned Meats (esp.

Tuna), Powdered Milk, Hearty Soups and Canned Fruit.

Please make an extra effort to bring non-perishable goods throughout this month.

Let’s send tons of food to help feed the people of Oklahoma City!

The Mission Council is seeking businesses that would sponsor the Third Annual Fit to Serve 5K Mission Run. Our church people who are out in the community are our best resources for finding the sponsors we need to make this event for mission a success. The race will be Sunday, Sept 30 at 4 p.m. at the Gaillardia Country Club. This will HELD AT GAILLARDIA be first of its kind held at that location.

COUNTRY CLUB Sponsorship begins at $250 to get a name on the t-shirts; a $500 sponsorship includes name on t-shirts, banner, PROCEEDS BENEFIT WHIZ KIDS posters, and 4 spots in the run; $1000 WWW.WHIZKIDSOK.ORG and up donations include all those, plus an advertising spot at Gaillardia on the day of the event. The race this year will benefit the Whiz Kids literacy ministry for children, in which many of our congregation serve. Women’s Fall Offerings Begin September 11

Each year almost 400 women in our congregation participate in a Bible study or small group on a weekly basis. Many of these women would testify to the great support and faith that these experiences have added to their lives. Why not consider joining one this Fall?

Women’s Ministries will begin the Fall Offerings Bible Studies, Scrapbooking, Quilting, and Body and Soul Exercise Classes (a new addition this fall!) on Tuesday morning, September 11 and on Wednesday evening, September 12. Brochures will be available on Sunday, August 19 and registration will begin Sunday, August 26 in the Concourse. These brochures will give you an idea of what is being offered and when. This Is the Year to Get Into a Disciple Bible Study!

Wouldn’t you love to have a better understanding of your Bible and how it all fits together? Make this the year to get involved in a Bible study. Beginning this fall, we have four outstanding Bible studies from which to choose!

Disciple I, “Becoming Disciples through Bible Study”, is an overview of both the Old and New Testaments. Over the course of two 10-week sessions, you will not only gain information which will help you understand your bible, you will begin to see how God’s word can transform your life. Rev. Randy Shrauner is leading this study.

Disciple II, “Into the Word into the World”, focuses on four key books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts. This study will take you deeper into the Scripture. This is the next step for those who have taken Disciple I. Randy and Lainey Robinson are leading this study.

Disciple III, “Remember Who You Are”, focuses on the connection between memory and identity as the people of God. Participants will read the major and minor Old Testament prophets, with the exception of Daniel, as well as the thirteen letters traditionally attributed to Paul.

Don Ellis is leading this study.

Disciple IV, “Under the Trees of Life”, concentrates on the Writings (Old Testament books not in the Torah or the Prophets), the Gospel of John, and Revelation. Present through the entire study is the sense of living toward completion – toward the climax of the message and the promise, extravagantly pictured in the Revelation. Blair Schoeb is leading this study.

Each of these Bible studies will meet Sundays from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. for two 10-week sessions beginning Sunday, September 9, through November 18. Each will resume Sunday, January 6, 2013 and end March 10. Registration begins Sunday, August 12. You can register at the registration tables in the Concourse on Sunday mornings or online at www.churchoftheservant.com. The fee for each study is $35 which includes the study manual. Childcare is provided for children up to 10 years of age.

Journey With Kings This Fall!

Have you ever thought, “How do those stories in the Old Testament relate to me?” Through the stories in I & II Kings, God teaches us how to live individually and collectively as a nation. Explore these fascinating stories of the few “good” and the many “not so good” kings and draw your own conclusion about the importance of godly living. By journeying with the kings of Israel, you’ll explore the glory days with prophets, priests and well-known Bible characters such as the Queen of Sheba, Elijah, Isaiah and Jezebel. Exciting life lessons will emerge making this a journey well worth the travel.

To understand God’s Word better and know how it personally applies to you requires daily commitment to his Word. Maturity can then grow and produce a light for others in a dark world. Each week we will reflect on what we have read, share our insights together, and pray.

Linda Shaw, a member of Church of the Servant, is the author of “A Journey With Kings”. She will be teaching this 10-week study on Wednesdays beginning September 12 through November 14. Grief Support Group Beginning August 28

A great opportunity for support and spiritual growth will be offered this fall at Church of the Servant. Beyond the Broken Heart is a 10-week grief support group for anyone who is grieving the loss of a loved one. There will be a video segment (10-12 minutes) at each session. The leader for this group will be Rev. Tim Travers, Minister of Congregational Care. We’ll meet each Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 in Room 1 & 2 in the South Adult area of Church of the Servant. Our final session will be October 30. Each participant will need a workbook ($10.00 each). in Children’s Ministries on August 26

A super, an amazing, and a memory-making Sunday morning is planned for children on Pack the House Sunday, August 26. The theme of the morning is EVERYONE MATTERS – especially to God. The morning will be packed full of learning and sharing ways for the kids to make God’s Word the foundation for their lives.

The highlight at 9:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. will be performances

by Geddy the Gecko. Geddy the Gecko is incredibly entertaining and witty, but most importantly, his presentations of the Gospel are done creatively, with clarity and are full of energy. His lessons not only entertain, but are educational. The skit routines of Geddy are hilarious and include audience participation.

John Mallory, the Geddy, is a former pro sports mascot who has entertained thousands in sports arenas across the country and today travels the country presenting at churches and schools.

REGISTER Now for WOW! Welcome on Wednesdays

Children 3 years through 5th grade can now register for WOW, which begins on September 12.

WOW is Children’s Ministries mid-week ministry which meets on Wednesday evenings during the school year from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Children meet in the children’s area where they join their church friends and are encouraged to invite their school and neighborhood friends to spend the evening with them praising Jesus and studying HIS word. Our prayer is that this weekly experience will bring them closer to the understanding that Jesus is their Savior and that there is nothing better in this life than being HIS disciple.

HOWEVER, it takes a multitude of adults for the objectives of this evening to be met. Parents and members of the congregation are encouraged to join the WOW team by being a small group leader. There is no preparation for the volunteers – their job is to show-up, make the kids feel welcome, love on the kids and share their faith with them.

Disciple Group Registrations are out!

D Groups, formally known as “Small Groups”, are genderbased groups that meet weekly with caring adults of the same gender. The D Group is a place to be known and cared for, a place to invest your life, and a place to learn what it means to be more like Christ. Beginning on September 12, D Groups will take place on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at various meeting spaces throughout the church. Registrations are due Sunday, September 2.

Leader training for D Group leaders will take place on Wednesday, September 5 at the Point! Dinner will be provided!

We believe that God intends for us to live in community with other people in order to build and encourage one another to be more like Christ. We will do this through fun games and studying the Scripture as a group.

Encounter is a worship service that will occur once a month in place of Old School on Sunday evenings.

Middle School Ministries!

Is Summer already over? Slow is not a word you will hear in Middle School Ministries! We have had a fun and event-filled summer with camps and activities, building community together.

But, we’re not through yet! Here are a few more events this month you need to know about!

August 15 is our Back-To-School Bash. It’s a pool and pizza party at Drew O’Hara’s home.

The cost per student is $3.00, which covers food. All students will meet at 6:00 p.m. at Drew’s house, 2485 Sierra Springs Dr., Edmond, 73012. Parents can pick up their students at 8:00 p.m.

August 22 we will meet to play laser tag at Lazer Quest, 10944 N. May Ave, OKC, OK 73120.

We are doing their Triple Play Package which is $18.00 for 3 games in 2 hours. Please meet there at 6:00 and pick up at 8:00.

August 26 is our church-wide “Pack the House” event. The only thing you have to bring is a friend! It costs $0!!! We want to set record numbers that day!

Middle School Ministries Is Gearing Up for the Fall!

Middle School Ministries is taking a short break from Wednesday night programming on Wednesdays, August 29 and September 5.

Our big kickoff is the “I AM” Fall Retreat September 7-9 at Canyon Camp. The registrations are out and available on the Middle School Student Ministries Webpage, www. churchoftheservant.com, or at The Point.

We will begin our Wednesday night program, called “The Garage,” on September 12. From 6:308:00 p.m. we will meet for games and Disciple Groups or D-Groups (formerly known as Small Groups).

A brand new program is starting this fall called J.A.M. It is an acronym for “Jesus And Me.” Every Sunday night, beginning September 16, we will meet together and dig into God’s Word and how it applies to our lives. J.A.M. will meet from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the Middle School room.

A L A S K A The 2012 Alaska Mission trip is now a thing of the past, and I’ve had a few days to settle back into my normal lifestyle (but who could really every say that 112 degrees is “normal”) and reflect on my mission experience. I was a part of a group of twelve who set out with a mission to bring Vacation Bible School to the children of Jewel Lake Parish in Anchorage, Alaska.

After a very successful Vacation Bible School at Church of the Servant in June, most of the elaborate decorations that went along with “Sky – Everything is Possible With God” were packed up and forwarded to Anchorage.

Jewel Lake Parish is a small church located very near the Anchorage airport and serves a community of low to moderate-income parishioners. After a three-legged journey northward, a tired group of Okies was greeted by Celia, the gracious and hospitable director of VBS at Jewel Lake. Five of us were bedded for the week at her home, while others were at the parsonage or the home of another church member. We were most warmly welcomed by the pastor and people of the church and were served breakfast and delightful homemade lunches each day throughout the week.

Monday morning found us sharing with approximately 40 beautiful children a phrase that summed up the lessons of the week – TRUST GOD. Shepherded by Randy and Jenny Shrauner, the team was given the instruction manuals, scripts and guidelines for leading the VBS experience, but were also told that more than anything, these kids needed huge hugs, warm smiles and listening ears. ...Continued on next page Page 12 I SERVANT August 15, 2012

Those of you that know me will know that I’m definitely a hugger. So I took Randy’s advice, turned it around and announced loudly that first morning, “I’m Miss Vicki, and one thing that I really need from each of you is lots of hugs this week.” And hugs – well, let’s just say I got lots of them. As soon as the car doors opened each morning, sweet little smiling children would bombard me, giving those wonderful hugs that they each so desperately needed themselves.

As we shared the Word in Big Blue Bible Adventures, we learned some small part of the stories that make up the lives of these precious little people. We heard of hunger, broken homes, and a real need to be seen as relevant in someone’s eyes. They eagerly learned the songs and movements, enthusiastically assumed the Biblical roles of the story of the day, and quickly embraced the idea that no matter who they are, how they feel, what people do or what happens, they can always TRUST GOD! On the first evening after VBS, some of us were taking a drive through Anchorage (actually on a moose hunt) when we stopped by a local supermarket. Out of the door came Lea, whose permanent home was in Washington state, but who was visiting her dad in An-

chorage. I rolled down the window and called to her.

We had asked the children to look for God in the world around them and to come back the next day and tell us about their “God sightings.” When the kids were asked to report on their God sightings the next morning, Lea’s hand shot into the air and she said “I saw God at the grocery store last night when I saw Miss Vicki and her friends!” In that moment, I realized that while I had traveled hundreds of miles to attempt a mission that might to some seem trivial, I had made a difference to Lea. And Lea had made a difference to me. I won’t be the same person as a result of my few days at Jewel Lake Parish. I learned that wherever God leads me, I can trust Him, and when I do, He’ll show me how to make a difference in the lives of others.

Thank you, Church of the Servant, for being a mission-minded church. Thank you for making many and varied mission opportunities available to the many and varied talents that are a part of our church. And the next time I see you, please remember that I really need a hug!

These were just a few of the comments we received from parents after our one-week Joyful Noise “We Can Praise” music camp. In just five days, 40 children learned a full 20-minute musical, learning about Page 14 I SERVANT August 15, 2012

ways we can praise God. In that week, these children learned songs about praising God, talked with each other about different things we can each do to praise God in our everyday lives, and learned several Bible verses about praise. Paul and Brooke Gebb shared their talents with this great group of kids, the youth apprentices were great with the kids and several parent volunteers gave their time for the week.

It was an amazing week of praise and I am so blessed to have been a part of it. I’m thankful for such an active children’s music ministry in my church and I’m thankful for the opportunity to be involved with Joyful Noise.

u Claire Marie Krysler, the daughter of Kevan & Cindy Krysler, received the Sacrament of Christian Baptism on August 9, 2012 in the Celebration Center at 4:00 p.m. The ceremony, officiated by Rev. Tim Travers, was attended by a host of family members, including grandparents Curt and Mimi Hendricks, great-grandmother Belle, and many others.
