Hannah’s Promise Volunteer Wins Miss Oklahoma On Saturday, June 8, Kelsey Griswold’s life was turned upside down when she was crowned Miss Oklahoma at the Tulsa Mabee Center. Kelsey has been competing since she was 13 years old and this was a dream come true for her. But this Tulsa native is not new to experiencing change in her life. When she was fifteen years old, her mother passed away and this event also turned her life upside down. Active in the theater program at Union High School, but caught in a wave of grief, Kelsey found a solace and began healing when she got connected volunteering with children with special needs several years ago. During that time she befriended a young girl named Danielle who had Down syndrome. Danielle struggled to communicate and the way she and Kelsey communicated was through drawing. Kelsey taught Danielle to express herself through pictures. And this expression and skill became the way that one day, Danielle actually communicated to her parents that she was sick, and their understanding and response to Danielle’s drawing saved her life. ...Continued on page 2
