May 7, 2014 CHURCH OF THE SERVANT Bi-Weekly NEWSLETTER

Issue: 14.9

Welcome

Rev. David Wheeler

Dr. Robert Gorrell Executive Minister

Bishop Robert Hayes has appointed Rev. David Wheeler as our new associate minister, effective June 6, 2014. David currently serves as the Senior Minister at First United Methodist Church Miami, Oklahoma. David states his calling is, “to serve as a pastor in a church that embodies the Cause of Christ through mission, ministry, worship, discipleship, and fellowship.” Sounds like our church, doesn’t it?! David helps people live out the Gospel by using his proven skills in the areas of preaching, coaching, worship, and encouragement. He was raised in a Christian home, and sensed a call to Christian ministry very early in life. Starting at age 19, he has spent the past twenty years serving local churches in three different roles: Senior Pastor, Associate Pastor, and Director of Worship Arts. David is an Ordained Elder in full connection with the Oklahoma Annual Conference of the UMC with previous experience in the Church of the Nazarene. David is described as someone whose life is shaped and defined most by the life and teachings of Jesus. David was trained as church growth consultant by Bill Easum, and has served as an independent church mission strategist for churches in the Oklahoma Conference. His formal education includes a Master of Divinity, 2008, Phillips Theological Seminary, Tulsa, OK (also studies at Asbury Seminary, Wilmore, KY), a Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation, 2004, Northwest Nazarene University, Nampa, ID, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music, 1997, S o u t h e r n Nazarene University, Bethany, OK. As Senior Minister for two years at First UMC Miami, David increased attendance from 172 to 242 weekly in worship. He founded a weekly Wednesday night food ministry with worship for hungry families that 80 averaged in attendance. In four years at Oologah he doubled the worship attendance there. He helped the church relocate from its 120 year-old facility to a new 18, 000 ft. facility on 15 acres. He has led over 40 local missions projects. As Associate Pastor at Faith UMC, Tulsa he founded systems for outreach and follow up, led choirs, bands, and bell choirs with over 110 volunteers in the music department. David is married to a music teacher named Cherie and they have two sons - Isaac (16) & Joshua (14). David met Cherie as a freshman in college. Both were music majors and had every class together and were married by the middle of their sophomore years. Cherie has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Tulsa and is certified as a Music Teacher in the state of Oklahoma. She has also worked on staff at Oologah UMC. Their two sons Isaac, 16 and Joshua, 14 are both into music, basketball, and fishing. Both are very skilled academically. Each has their own very unique personality, but they enjoy sharing in many of the same school and church related activities. Both are very active in their youth group. Join me in welcoming David and his family to our church! - Robert

Missions Opportunities to Serve With the Clothes for Kids Ministry

Skyline on S.E. 15th Street would gladly accept a donation of your time! Because of the large volume of clients received for this program, we always need volunteers. This might be a great opportunity for a small group, Sunday school class, or even just a group of friends to serve together. Below are available volunteer opportunities:

Annual Clothes for Kids Special Fish Appeal Sunday, May 11

Each summer, Skyline Urban Ministry provides new school apparel to hundreds of children in need. This program is funded through designated donations, so we are only able to serve as many children as donations allow. It cost approximately $80 per child to provide two new school uniforms, underwear, socks, and shoes. In recent years we have served over 1,000 children! Last year we served 680 children. Please consider making a contribution to Clothes 4 Kids this year and help us be able to serve 1,000 children again! This special offering will be taken in all four worship services on May 11.

Clothes 4 Kids Registration - June 2 - 26 Mondays – Thursdays Shifts Available: Mondays & Wednesdays, 1 - 4 p.m. Tuesdays & Thursdays, 9 a.m. - Noon or 1 - 4 p.m. Description: Interview parents and complete intake forms to determine clothing and shoe sizes of children needed for ordering inventory. Volunteers need to arrive 15 minutes prior to start of shift for brief training. Clothes 4 Kids Distribution - July 14 - 25 Mondays – Fridays Shifts Available: Mondays – Fridays, 8:30 a.m. – noon and 12:30 - 4:00 p.m. Description: Personal shopper – personally take each child to designated areas to try on shoes and school uniforms to ensure a proper fit for each child.

It is such a blessing to be able to serve these children so they can attend the first day of school wearing clothes and shoes that are just as shiny and new as the clothes that all the other children are wearing. Not only are we offering apparel, we are offering confidence and self-esteem to children in need. Thank you all so much for your support and for helping us help those in need in our community! If you have questions or would like to volunteer, you can contact Melissa Ramey at (405) 632-2644 or mramey@skylineurbanministry.org.

STOP HUNGER NOW UPDATE

We are delighted to announce that the meals from our recent meal packaging event in February have been shipped to Catholic Relief Services in Burkina Faso. The most vulnerable populations in Burkina Faso will be receiving these Stop Hunger Now meals. The meals go directly to organizations supporting people living with HIV, orphans, the elderly, widows, the disabled and young women forced into marriage. These individuals desperately need assistance before they can learn to provide for themselves. If you would like to find out more about Catholic Relief Services visit their website at: http://crs.org/countries/burkina-faso. Save the date of Sunday, February 22, 2015 for the next Stop Hunger Now meal packaging event. This event is open not only to friends and families, but co-workers and organizations as well. For more information about next year’s SHN event, please contact Scott Smith at ssmith@churchoftheservant.com. SERVANT May 7, 2014 I Page 3

Do you have a car that you like to showcase? On-site registration begins that day at 10 a.m. Our partnering church, Wesley UMC, is hosting a community day of fun on their grounds that will include a car show, live music, food vendors, a kid’s area, storytelling, historical tours of the building and door prizes. Come out for a couple of hours and support one of our partnering ministries! From more information on car entry or volunteering, please contact Guy Ramsey at 525-3521.

Project Transformation Date June 16-19 - Chapel Hill UMC

Each summer, members of Servant read with the children of Oklahoma City who are part of the Project Transformation Ministry of the United Methodist Church. This ministry was founded here in the Oklahoma Conference by one of our own members, Pat McGarrity. Many of you volunteer to keep this ministry alive and vibrant in our city. All of the children involved increase their reading abilities, and the older children are sometimes given small “teacher assistant” roles, to help them develop leadership skills. Each day, the children have a Bible lesson, and they also spend one-on-one time with volunteers. Both of these experiences remind them how precious they are, which helps their spiritual formation. We need you and we need others who might come as new volunteers to Project Transformation this summer. The commitment is that each morning that you choose, you come from 9:30-noon. As a volunteer, you listen to children read, one child at a time for 30 minutes (4 children total). It is a small commitment that makes a big difference. During this week, the church is also responsible for meals for the college interns that run the program. The meals are delivered in the evenings to OCU. It is a great opportunity for a Sunday school class or small group to serve together one evening. If you are or a class is interested, choose your dates by contacting Pat McGarrity at patnleroy@yahoo.com.

May Mission - UMCOR Health Kits Goal – 800 Health Kits

Pick up and fill one of the plastic bags located in the Concourse this Sunday. These bags contain a supply list and packing instructions for health kits to be distributed by the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). UMCOR is a non-profit organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering around the globe. Health kits provide basic necessities to people who have been forced to leave their homes because of human conflict or natural disaster. Our goal is to assist the most vulnerable persons affected by crisis or chronic need. Health kits are the top item sent out by UMCOR. Any person, at any time and at any age, can use them. Health kits contain one hand towel, one washcloth, one comb, a metal file or nail clipper, a bar of bath-sized soap, one toothbrush, six adhesive bandages, and $1 for depot staff to purchase toothpaste (because toothpaste expires). The total cost of the supplies is around $12. One person can make a difference. Please take a bag to fill and return by May 18. The kits help sustain everyday life for people who lack ready access to essential supplies. The Health Kits will then go to our United Methodist Annual Conference, and Volunteers in Mission will deliver then to the headquarters in Louisiana. Through UMCOR, United Methodists extend loving care to people within the United States, as well as internationally. Page 4 I ChurchotheServant.com

Thankful for Larry Becker In the area of Care Ministries at Church of the Servant, we have been blessed to have Rev. Dr. Larry Becker serving part-time as Care Associate for the past seven years. At the end of June, Larry will become fully retired. On the morning of Sunday, June 1, we will have a come-and-go reception in the Community Hall of our church. This will give all our members an opportunity to come by and thank Larry for all his wonderful service to Church of the Servant. You’ll still see him - and his wife, Marcia - around here at Servant, as they enjoy the church home they have come to love. Larry served six different churches in the Oklahoma Annual Conference during his tenure as a full-time pastor, spanning twenty-six years. In addition, he served as the Lawton District Superintendent for seven years, as well as the Conference Ministerial Services and Benefits Officer for five and a half years. Prior to his full-time service, he served as a student pastor, and in other capacities, for a total of nine years. Since retiring from full-time ser-

As always, Troop 177 has had a very busy and overall very successful month. First, as you may know, some of our scouts were able to help with the setup of the Easter Egg Hunt at Church of the Servant. This is one of the many activities at the church that we as a troop take part in and we hope to continue doing as long as we are a troop. Also, we recently received a very large group of new scouts, and this month we held our annual new scout training campout where we teach the new scouts many of the basic skills of cooking, camping, and keeping a clean campsite all while having a good time with friends. We went to Slippery Falls Scout Ranch in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, where the scouts experienced a long hike to the falls (to prepare them

vice, he has spent almost twelve years in part-time ministry, first with Grace United Methodist Church and then Church of the Servant. Among Larry’s accolades, he received the prestigious Denman Evangelism Award in 1981. Larry’s extensive ministerial experience, along with his love and caring for people, makes him a joy and a blessing to us. We are, indeed, thankful for his ministry across all these years! Larry says, “What I liked the most about doing ministry here at Servant was the affirmation, support, and appreciation I have received from both staff and members of our church. The worship services have always been uplifting, and the opportunities I have had to teach Sunday school classes and the Christian Believer course, and relationships I’ve made with the people, have all been sources of real joy.” Following his “second retirement,” Larry plans to spend more time with family - his wife, Marcia, their three daughters, two sons-in-law, and three

grandchildren. Larry and Marcia also plan to do some traveling. Larry looks forward to having more time to look after household updates and maintenance, as well as doing some flower gardening. Larry intends to keep his spirit keen and sharp by continuing to read and get involved in some intensive Bible study.

for our upcoming hiking campout), a few hours of catching fish and playing in the water, and, because it was the first campout with a group of untrained scouts and parents that didn’t know what to expect as far as campouts go, it was inevitable that we had extreme weather. As we were packing up on Sunday morning and we were getting ready to pack everything into the troop trailer, it began to rain and almost as soon as we felt the raindrops, we heard the pounding of hailstones on the roofs of the cars in our campsite. We ducked for cover and after a solid ten minutes of hail and rain soaking every tent and backpack in sight, we packed up and headed home, narrowly avoiding the areas that received tornado warnings. It was definitely an exciting experience

for the new scouts, and overall it was a huge success. The troop is also looking forward to our annual Memorial Day Flag Ceremony, where we host a ceremony in honor of the many soldiers that have served and died for our country. This is one of the things the troop does that I am always proud to be a part of. Troop 177 is looking forward to the start of summer and the many fun and exciting events that follow. Happy scouting! New Summer Groups for Women Wednesday Mornings in the Word

Begins Wednesday, May 14, 9:30-11:30, South Adult room 1-2 For 75 years the Upper Room Daily Devotional has been a faithful and inspiring resource for United Methodists. The Upper Room’s mission is to provide a model of practical Christianity, accessible in varied formats, to help people feel invited and welcomed into God’s presence to: • listen to scripture as God’s personal message, linking their stories to God’s story; • commune with God in prayer; • see their daily choices and small acts of obedience as part of God’s work; • realize our connection through Christ as a universal family of believers; • encounter the living Christ and be transformed into Christ’s likeness. This summer, the Wednesday morning women’s group will use these devotions as a tool for Bible study and personal growth. By reading a daily devotion the group will prepare for discussion and reflection together on Wednesday mornings. If you are looking for a way to stay connected to God and others this summer, this group offers study and fellowship for women of all ages.

Mommy & Me Grandma & Me Sewing Class June 17, 24, July 1 Children 8 – 12

Two sessions will be offered on Tuesdays, June 17, 24, and July 1. Session 1 will be 1-2:30 p.m.; Session 2 will be 3-4:30 p.m. Please sign up at the Welcome Center and receive a supply list.

Fridays for Moms - Beginning in June

Meets in 13:2 at 9:30 a.m., childcare provided Summer days are wonderful, but they get long with kiddos. Give yourself a couple of hours of refreshment on a Friday morning by joining a caring, vibrant group of moms that meet all year long. Sometimes, the morning ends with play dates or picnics. This is a great way to connect with other Christian moms caring for kids during the summer. In this session, the group will be doing a book/video series entitled One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann VosKamp. Ann asks these questions: Do we find joy in the midst of deadlines, debt, drama, and daily duties? What does the Christ-life really look like when your days are gritty, long... and sometimes even dark? How is God even here? In One Thousand Gifts, Ann invites you to embrace everyday blessings and embark on the transformative spiritual discipline of chronicling God’s gifts. It’s only in this expressing of gratitude for the life we already have, we discover the life we’ve always wanted…a life we can take, give thanks for, and break for others. We come to feel and know the impossible right down in our bones: we are wildly loved --- by God. Contact Nicole Baldwin at 613-3887 for more details.

All of Earthglow’s profits go to missions; the Earthglow Board voted at the last meeting to give $40,000 to the following missions: Prepare the Way, Skyline Eye Clinic, Skyline Summer Academy & Peace Challenge Camp, Circle of Care, Exodus House, Penn Ave. Redemption Church, Camp Caveat, Neighborhood Services Organization, Stop Hunger Now, and Hispanic Ministries. Student CONFIRMATION SUNDAY

On May 4, twenty-nine seventh-grade students were confirmed after a ten-week Confirmation Class. During these ten weeks, they learned about our Methodist beliefs, and started to make those beliefs their own. These young Christ followers truly love Jesus and love this church. In fact a group of them pray over all our chairs on Sunday and help make guests welcome. I can not tell you how many times I heard “Do you need help with anything?, and a sweet thank you. They are servants, they are compassionate, and I learn from them each day. I ask you to please wrap your arms around these students, pray for them, and support the youth in whatever way you feel God calling you.

We can always use teen helpers, and nursery care is available for children of volunteers who are younger than four. I have been a VBS volunteer since my first child was old enough to participate. It was so fun teaching the Bible story each day and getting to experience the fun of VBS along with the kids, all the while knowing my child was having a great time with friends. Please prayerfully consider how you can help support this tremendous ministry. Volunteer registration is also on the Website. I hope to see ALL of you at Vacation Bible School this year! VBS WISHING TREE

The VBS Wishing Tree in the Concourse is for supplies and materials that are needed for VBS. The items are inexpensive, but because of the quantity needed, they can be a really big portion of the VBS budget. Stop by and check out the items to be donated. If you are able to help, select a card or two from the VBS Wishing Tree, purchase the items, and return the items to the office by the date printed on the card. Since some of the items are needed earlier than others, the return dates are different on some of the cards. Thank you for your support of VBS!
