CHURCH OF THE SERVANT Bi-Weekly NEWSLETTER

Issue: 16.2

15 Years of

Hannah’s Promise SEEKING A NEW GENERATION OF VOLUNTEERS TO SERVE

HANNAH’S PROMISE a ministry for families with children who have special needs

Now seeking a new generation of volunteers to serve.

How can one evening a month change the life of a family? Hannah’s Promise is in its 15th year of providing respite care for families that have children with special needs. The original idea of this church and community ministry was that families would have a safe place to leave their children one evening a month so that they might have valuable time of respite and refreshment for themselves and for their relationships. It is a ministry that is helping families in ways we can’t begin to imagine. For some parents this is the only evening they have to spend alone together a month. One mother shared she can only do laundry when her son is not around because the rhythm of the washing machine upsets him, so she goes home to do laundry. Another parent shared while her child is at Hannah’s Promise she takes a bath, the one time a month she gets to have some time to herself. The stories from families living life with the blessings and the challenges of a child with special needs are uniquely beautiful and painful. Hannah’s Promise has journeyed with over 50 families over the span of 15 years. On the second Saturday of each month, from 4:30 to 9:00 p.m., volunteers gather to offer an evening of games, crafts, playtime, and a Bible story to children and their siblings. Regardless of ability or disability or age, each child has his/her own volunteer for the entire four hours. Volunteers are needed for siblings as well as the children with special needs. This ministry is fulfilling for the volunteer as one gives of themselves for the evening, and is life-giving for the parents to have this support. Right now, we have a waiting list of families who would like to be a part of this beautiful ministry, but we lack volunteers. Would you consider making a one-year commitment to serve at Hannah’s Promise as a volunteer for a child once a month? The screening process is simple. Training is also provided, and there is special attention to matching the children to a volunteer. Not sure if this ministry is for you? Come Saturday evening, February 13 to an “Open House” for Hannah’s Promise and experience what an evening entails. Your visit gives you a chance to see how the ministry works and allows you to make an informed commitment. If you would like to come and visit please contact Lola Burgtorf at lburgtorf@churchoftheservant.com.

Lenten Invitation Finding HOPE in the Bible

Lenten Scripture Reading Invitation The Season of Lent begins in just 15 days on Ash Wednesday, February 10. Many of you know that Lent is a season of 40 days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. It’s a time of self-examination and reflection on our relationship with God. It can be a time of renewal in our lives. Would you like to be renewed by the Word of God? During the season of Lent, we want to challenge everyone in our church to commit to reading scripture for 40 days. The Bible is God’s word for our lives. It guides, shapes and renews our soul. You are invited to join others in reading scripture – either in a small group or by yourself – in preparation for the worship service the following Sunday. Each Sunday afternoon, beginning February 7, a guide for the reading, a short video, and questions for your small group, will be available by email and on our Website Servant Blog. Everything is provided for you! The idea is that groups that already exist might do this together or new groups might form during this season for this purpose. There will be a few groups set to meet at the church during the week for individuals that are not already connected in a smaller study group. You can sign up one of three ways: 1. On Sunday, attached to the bulletin, fill out the Connect Card with your information, check the box “I would like to sign-up for:” and write in Lenten Study; and then drop it in the offering basket. 2. Go by the table in the Concourse that has a big HOPE sign on the table and sign up there. 3. Email Dr. Robyn Goggs at rgoggs@churchoftheservant.com to sign up or request to be a part of a small group.

Finding Hope Lenten Luncheon Group to Meet on Wednesdays 12-1pm beginning February 17 Bring your lunch and your Bible and spend an hour reading and reflecting with a small group in the Community Hall throughout Lent. Each table will have a facilitator and will help lead the discussion on the passage for the Sunday following. If you can’t make this time on Wednesdays, there are several other opportunities which will be listed at the HOPE table in the Concourse this Sunday. Stop by the table to sign up for Wednesdays or to find a group to join.

The loss of a husband can be one of the most difficult times in a woman’s life.

Women

We have a community of women called the Kindred Community, which is a sisterhood of women who share and do life together! Do you need a community like this in your life? If so, we want to invite you to come to our next Kindred Community luncheon in the Community Hall on Saturday, February 20, at 11:30 a.m. You will enjoy a wonderful lunch and hear the compelling testimony of Taylor Barnett, a young woman touched by loss, love, and God’s calling on her life. She will warm your heart with her tender story and deep love for Jesus. You can sign up one of two ways: (1) Fill out the Connect Card this morning with your information and check the box “I would like to sign-up for:” write in Kindred Community Luncheon. Then drop it in the offering basket. (2) RSVP with Sherri Price at sherriprice@cox.net or 748-3111. Feel free to bring a friend! SERVANT January 27, 2016 I Page 3

Looking for Renewal... For Spiritual Growth? You have heard the verses: “And the Word became flesh...,” “For God so loved the world...,” “You who are without sin cast the first stone...,” “I am the resurrection and the life...,” “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” But, do you understand the truth of those verses?
