Looking Back, Looking Forward There is significant biblical warrant for looking back periodically. Specifically, to look back and reflect on what God has done for us is important, so we don’t forget the greatness, goodness, and faithfulness of God Almighty. Remembering that glorious truth is important because it both strengthens us for the present and gives us confidence and hope for the future. ӹ

hroughout the book of Deuteronomy, Moses exhorts the Israelites to “remember.” He does so in hopes that such remembrance will encourage the people to be obedient to the Lord in the present and to give them the courage and hope for the future.

If you say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I. How can I dispossess them?’ you shall not be afraid of them but you shall remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.

– Deuteronomy 7:17–18 You shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt; and you shall be careful to observe these statutes. – Deuteronomy 16:12

This is why I’m taking a look back, before looking forward, to consider the goodness and mercy of the Lord toward the establishment and growth of Bethlehem College & Seminary. I don’t ever want us to take for granted that whatever good has been accomplished is from the hand of God. His mercy and grace are precious, glorious, and absolutely crucial to fulfilling the vision and mission He has given us.

We have now entered our ninth year of existence as a degree-granting institution—having already completed eight full school years. What the Lord has done in these first eight years is simply remarkable.

Since the school started in 2009, we have: ӹ

established five degree programs (with another soon to be announced): Associate of Arts, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Theology, Master of Divinity, and a Master of Theology.

offered three certificate programs in: theology, music & worship, and church planting.

ӹ

grown our faculty into one which is of the highest caliber academically, professionally, and personally. Our faculty care about their work and see themselves as pastor-professors who are zealous for both the intellectual and spiritual growth of our students.

seen our student body grow from 68 students in 2009 to 212 this fall.

become accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Association of Biblical Higher Education—an agency, itself, accredited and approved by the U.S. Department of Education—in near record time. established a radical, very rare, affordable financial model that isn’t dependent upon federal financial aid programs and which allows students to graduate without accumulating a mountain of debt in the process.

Yes, the Lord has been gracious and merciful to us over these first eight years! This gives us great hope and confidence that He will continue to be with us in the years to come.

We have embarked on several new initiatives which greatly encourage us as we look to the future.

As you may know from previous communications, we have adopted Bethlehem Baptist Church’s “25 x ‘25” vision for spreading. We have made it our aim, as an institution, to have at least 25 of our graduates fill the personnel needs of starting 25 church-plants and engaging 25 unengaged people groups by the year 2025. The Lord is already raising up a strong response to this vision from among our current students.

We are also discussing how we might partner with other like-minded churches and institutions in other parts of the world for the purpose of strengthening the church worldwide through theological training in the context of local churches.

The Bethlehem Conference for Pastors + Church Leaders, which we now fully “own,” is our means of strengthening and encouraging the church through inspirational preaching, teaching, and fellowship.

This is a vital means of spreading a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples, through Jesus Christ. This well-established conference draws 2,000+ people from around the world each year.

These, and many other developments, are exciting indicators of how much the Lord has accomplished at Bethlehem College & Seminary in such a short time. All of this speaks to the glory of God alone. He is the one powerfully at work. We are just striving to be faithful servants to the vision and mission He has given us.

You, dear friends, are partners in this remarkable endeavor. God alone is responsible for the good and worthy accomplishments of this school, but He has used you as a significant agent in this. By your prayers, your volunteer efforts, your encouragement, and your financial support, the Lord is preparing Bethlehem College & Seminary to be a bright beacon of gospel light in an increasingly dark world. We need your prayers and support now more than ever as we look toward the future.

ere, students spend their time cultivating a thinking capacity that glorifies God by thinking rightly about him and a feeling capacity that glorifies God by feeling rightly about him in all things—the very capacities required for lifelong learning, worship, and flourishing in any field of human endeavor.

The church is the one social institution in which the Christian will live his or her life until death. It is also the institution which will survive all earthly and other-worldly assaults on family, friendship, nationality, wealth, and physical well-being.

Bethlehem College & Seminary seeks to shape well-equipped churchmen and women at an early stage in their lives such that they may persevere in leadership, service, and worship in Christ’s church. Our “Education in Serious Joy” takes place on the site and amidst the life of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

We hold classes in the unadorned simplicity of un-used Sunday school rooms. Students are woven into the worship, Bible study, local evangelistic outreach, community service, small group life, and short-term missionary efforts of the church as part of the educational experience.

The College The Omina program is where men and women can spend the first two years of college seeing and savoring Christ in all things in the company of a few close friends.

O

mnia is an accredited undergraduate core curriculum designed for students and delivered in the Reformed and Classical academic traditions. Most general education cores include two years of credits to be obtained before a student may pursue a major. At Bethlehem College & Seminary, Omnia is a spiritual and intellectual foundation from which students launch into a lifetime of learning, worship, family, and vocation.

Small Student Cohorts Omina is a unique program of study that is carried out in small cohorts of students, led by pastor-professors who are as much involved in the students’ spiritual formation as they are in their academic performance.

Theologically Reformed

in which our biblical embrace of salvation, by grace, through faith, on the basis of Christ’s atoning work, to the glory of God radically shapes our view of everything else in the created world.

Classical The program is classical in that it aims to recover the best of the Christian and classical liberal arts tradition, examining the diversity of human knowledge under the unifying discipline of theology. Thus it seeks to trace the development of human history as redemptive history from creation to the modern era. Students who complete the Omnia program earn an Associate of Arts degree. On program completion students may transfer to another institution or remain at Bethlehem College & Seminary to earn Bachelor of Arts degree in either Biblical and Theological Studies or the History of Ideas.

Omnia, Latin for “all things,” is drawn from Bethlehem’s motto text, Colossians 1:17: “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” The curriculum supports the school’s mission to spread a passion for the supremacy of God in all things for the joy of all peoples through Jesus Christ by equipping men and women to treasure Christ above all things, to grow in wisdom and knowledge over a lifetime, and to glorify God in every sphere of life.

verything is related, because everything is related to God. Therefore, all of our undergraduate programs seek to enable students to make connections across various disciplines and fields of inquire, and to bridge the gap between the subject of their study and their own lives.

Building upon the historical and theological framework established in the Omnia program, students in this major will grow in their ability to synthesize and articulate theological truths by participating in a series of upper-division historical, systematic, and biblical theological courses.

All courses in this degree program will impress upon students the need to apply the truth learned to themselves, their church, and the surrounding culture. Students in this concentration will develop a strong grasp of the storyline of the Bible, the remarkable, Christ-centered unity between the Old and New Testaments, and the expansion of God’s global kingdom in history.

HI STORY OF I D EAS

Also building upon the historical and theological framework established in the Omnia program, this major focuses upon great works of Western Civilization with a view to equipping students to evaluate the

seminal ideas in the history of thought in light of the self-disclosure of the triune God. The program will not merely expose students to the great thinkers and ideas of history, but it will equip them to participate in the Great Conversation while growing into mature human beings who are broad-minded and big-hearted, possessing firm convictions and eager to pursue wisdom and wonder for the rest of their lives.

You started college once, then life happened.

The Bethlehem College & Seminary Degree Completion Program offers men and women the opportunity to finish degrees once-started, to equip lives now overflowing of gospel ambition.

B AC H E LO R O F T HEO LO GY

Students meet four hours, one night a week, for twenty months to study the depths of God’s Word. Students will learn the skills and tools necessary for a lifetime of fruitful study of the Scriptures, including New Testament Greek. Students will not only systematically study “the whole counsel of God” but will also develop a strong grasp of the storyline of the Bible—how God progressively establishes his global kingdom in history through the mission of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Seminary

What better place to prepare for vocational eldership than in the life of a local church?

B

ethlehem College & Seminary graduate degree programs offer men a unique opportunity to pursue deep, Biblesaturated, theological and language studies while concurrently serving and worshipping alongside the pastors and saints of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Think of it as in-the-church training for pastoral ministry, missionary service, future academic ministry, and elder-level leadership.

Each graduating class is comprised of a cohort of 15-18 men who share all four years of academic, church, vocational, and family life together. Students in the cohort study in close relationship with pastor-professors who are as engaged in their spiritual growth as they are with their academic performance. Marriage and family life are celebrated, encouraged, and lovingly supported in this unique churchbased environment where there are many programs, activities, small groups, and ministries throughout the year to engage students, as well as their wives and children. Many students are employed, during their courses of study, in part-time jobs either in the church or the local community.

M ASTE R O F D I V I NI T Y

The Master of Divinity is the foundational four-year program for those called to vocational ministry as pastors, missionaries, or other full-time Christian workers at the elder level. The program’s emphasis is intense, whole-Bible exegesis in the original languages with a special focus on the unfolding of God’s sovereign plan throughout all of redemptive history.

Concentrations in Church Planting and Revitalization and Worship are also available.

M ASTE R O F TH E O LO GY

The Master of Theology is offered for students who desire to sharpen their expertise in a specific topic of theological learning. Students may work on the M.Div. and Th.M. degrees concurrently or may complete the 20 credit Th.M. in approximately one year following the M.Div. Master of Theology candidates author a thesis during their final year under the supervision of a Bethlehem College & Seminary professor.

Since the inaugural year in 2009, Bethlehem College & Seminary has grown steadily towards the goal of 250 students per year.

We Thank God for You When I started at Bethlehem College & Seminary in 2011, through a series of events I met Toph Majors, a TBI (The Bethlehem Institute) graduate, at a basketball and soccer camp. That connection started my relationship with Jubilee Community Church where I serve as an associate pastor. During seminary, I joined Toph in mentoring young men at Jubilee. One requirement to graduate from Bethlehem College & Seminary was the 4th year internship. What a wonderful opportunity to connect lessons learned in class in the context of the local church! My internship at Jubilee turned into a pastoral residency which led to my current role. Bethlehem College & Seminary’s hidden jewel is its professors. I was drawn to the school because of its chancellor, Dr. John Piper. What I did not know was how much my life would be impacted by men like Tom Steller, Jason Derouchie, Jason Meyer, Andy Naselli, Brian Tabb, Glen Bloomstrom, and Joe Rigney. These men love Jesus, their wives, their children, their church, and their scholarship. To be trained by men with pastoral hearts spurred me on to be like them in a future pastoral role.

Bethlehem College & Seminary provides rigorous training in exegesis and the biblical languages.

I use the tools I learned there every time I preach. Even more, Bethlehem College & Seminary provides examples for aspiring pastors to emulate. Now, in my role as a pastor, I thank God for giving me pastoral brothers whose faith I want to imitate (Heb. 13:7). I also thank God for you who have graciously given to our school that has provided for me a great education.
