Approaching the building by slowing down before entering: threshold space is formed by steps down. Steps create a place for transition, it is an element of slowing down.

Ordered Strict geometry following a grid structure.

Freely selectable and Guided Choice for both ,up to the visitor to choose their path: free or guided.

Delimitation

Open Large open spaces where promenade is freely accessible but is spatially delimited by rows of columns.

Concealed Seating areas in promenade ‘to stop and think’ are embedded in the landscape which extends the large open spaces.

THRESHOLD DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Experiencing

Introducing The visitor is introduced into the plot by the use of a cantilever. A threshold space is formed underneath the cantilever. The visitors finds itself not on the outside anymore but not yet on the inside, this is the in-between space. By creating this in-between space transitioning from the outside to the inside becomes easier. With this the building opens itself up to the visitor.

The visitor can experience the plot by the use of a covered outside space. A threshold space is formed underneath the coverage.

The threshold space is the in-between space. By creating this in between space transitioning from the square to the plot becomes easier. With this the plot opens itself up to the visitor

The cantilever is the low threshold strategy used on the two main buildings along the edges of the street. These buildings introduce and guide the visitor with an easy transition into plot or into the building.

The covered outside space is the low threshold strategy used on the promenade in the center of the plot. The promenade guides the visitor from one space to the other, experiencing everything as they walk alongside it.

The artist village IN DETAIL Flexibility and adaptability is achieved within The artist village with the concept of moving facade elements. The facade elements can be adjusted to the needs of the artist by sliding them open, closed or everything in between. The wooden panels as well as the curtain wall can be opened separately. In this way the needs for natural lighting of every artist can be suited.

1: Disorientation

Introduction (threshold)

Descending from the metro station not knowing where to go the visitor is attracted by the greenery at the end of this street.

Path becomes more clear as the visitor gets closer to the greenery. The atmosphere of the neighborhood can be seen and experienced. A part of the building peeks just around the corner of the street

3: Questioning A bit of disorientation keeps the visitor underneath the cantilever of the building but after a quick peek into the workshop the path towards greenery continuous.

4: Reorientation Finally reaching the square the visitor is not focused on the greenery anymore, its focus descends to the building opening up.

After passing the low htreshold the building opens up and art is exhibited all around the visitor to be experienced.

The artist village ARTIST PERSPECTIVE LIVING IN THE ARTIST VILLAGE

Movement of artist and art 1: Studio The residency of the artist is compact with a separation between living, sleeping and bathing. The facade elements can be opened for more spatiality.

The residency of the artist is directly linked to its private atelier space. The flexible wall inbetween can be opened to create a mix between living and working.

3: Circulation The circulation space inbetween the private ateliers creates an opportunity for interaction and meeting other artists. Nevertheless it can be closed off with delimiting elements to the artist preference.

The public workshop is open to all artist where they can work together and learn from each other.

5: Exibition After the making off the art pieces can be exhibited within dialogue with the other artist in the many available spaces alongside the promenade. scale 1:100

THE ARTIST VILLAGE opening up to art The artist village is an artist-in-residence complex with the concept of living and working that promotes the artist community. The village is a place where the artist and the visitors come together.

With the use of a low threshold the village opens itself up to the world of art, it will invite the visitor to experience art in different ways. Art throughout the village can be experienced by following the architectural promenade. The art, made by the inhabitants, shows not only the final product but also the making of and the meaning behind it. Experience it yourself.
