As árvores nos deram também os livros. Para além da matéria-prima, as árvores nos legaram até o nome da matéria, suporte – superfície, de muitos dos livros que conhecemos. Releio e reescrevo aqui a origem da palavra Papel: papyrus, da árvore Cyperus papyrus.

No caso do livro que você tem nas mãos, a primeira folha dele é, literalmente, uma folha de árvore. Sérgio Helle começa a pensar na série Paradisus depois de olhar, e ver, uma folha de torém. Seca, ressecada, ressequida. Quebrável feito vidro. Relevo, geometria. Luz, sombra. Torcida, retorcida, arquitetura de dobras sobre si. É de torém a folha que origina o livro que você tem nas mãos. Está morta.

E diz de como a vida pode se manifestar. No chão, no solo, na mata, nas florestas onde podemos encontrá-la, e de onde ela veio, geraria vida. Morreu como torém, mas ainda é da vida que se trata. Um chão de folhas mortas, e outros resíduos da vida como ela pode ser, constituem o que se chama serrapilheira, uma cama – berço de nutrientes, solo germinável, fonte geradora.

A folha do torém está na serrapilheira que torna possível o livro que passa diante dos seus olhos. Uma ação coletiva, um livro é obra de transformações em rede, uma co-operação acionada em direção a você, Leitora, Leitor.

Como um desejo de inscrição, registro, na nossa condição que é a de impermanência, passagem, fluxo.

Paradisus, o livro, assim se constitui. Um projeto da editora Lumiar, com gerenciamento de Dora Freitas. Traz fotos realizadas por Bruno Zanardo, Jarbas Oliveira e o próprio Sérgio. Cláudia Albuquerque nos apresenta Sérgio Helle em entrevista no ateliê, seu local de trabalho cotidiano. Arguta escuta – escrita. “Caprichosa, como em todo intercâmbio, a conversa depende tanto do silêncio quanto da atenção aos detalhes”, escreve no texto que funciona como um roteiro de aproximação – apreciação do percurso e modo Sérgio Helle de trabalhar, compor, produzir.

Cláudia Albuquerque escreve: “Nascido no Crato em 1964, Sérgio Helle veio para Fortaleza com a família aos 10 anos, trazendo na bagagem algumas vagas lembranças visuais: Sinhá D’Amora (Lavras da Mangabeira,

Ceará, 1906 – Rio de Janeiro, 2002) no Museu do Crato, Aldemir Martins (Ingazeiras, Cariri, Ceará, 1922 – São Paulo, 2006) na parede de uma tia, Chico da Silva (Alto Tejo, Acre, 1910 – Fortaleza, 1985) numa gaveta da família (“nunca soube se eram originais ou cópias”).”

Um primeiro cruzamento Cariri e Amazônia, destino de outra viagem que se realizaria mais de 40 anos depois da primeira e nomina a segunda parte do livro. Um deslocamento, a saída da família do Sul do Ceará, interior, para a capital no litoral, a mais de 500km de distância. Outras migrações, como as dos três artistas citados. E dois traços fortes – de lastro e rastro - no mundo das artes que surge a partir do Ceará. Refiro-me especialmente a Aldemir Martins e Chico da Silva para citar também um lugar onde Sérgio anos depois de chegar a Fortaleza faria cursos, desfrutaria da convivência artística e poderia olhar melhor o desenho do primeiro e o colorista que foi o segundo, ambos com salas permanentes no Museu de Arte da Universidade Federal do Ceará – Mauc.

Antes do encontro com Cláudia Albuquerque, foi no ateliê que recebemos a escritora Tércia Montenegro; depois, o também jornalista Demitri Túlio.

Olhares que alargam os nossos. Repertórios que passamos a compartilhar.

Para Tércia Montenegro, em Paradisus, “o sagrado da natureza transborda”.

Ficcionista, faz-nos compreender em bloco. Ao escrever sobre árvores, convida à memória, fabulosa e imparável ilha de edição, matéria e oficina: “(...) então certa vez encontrei uma árvore caída, arrancada por um temporal. Eu vi suas vísceras como se ela tivesse morrido num bombardeio – e entendi. As pernas das árvores são o solo inteiro.” Sim, um olhar para ampliar o nosso.

O solo como corpo da árvore, corpo em vida, corpo vivo, a mui citada e talvez pouco compreendida complexidade da vida, a teia vibrante, a pulsar, experimentaríamos isso também dias depois em uma manhã, imersos, Sérgio e eu, no Parque do Cocó, guiados por Demitri Tulio.

Na mesma manhã que ele ficou conosco no ateliê e no quintal do prédio onde Sérgio vive e trabalha – tem casa|morada e casa|ateliê -, propus e Demitri topou na hora nos guiar pela floresta urbana que Fortaleza, a bem dizer,

ignora. E ele se dedica a escutar amorosamente em visitas quase diárias: “E porque precisamos de uma mata para viver (cada pessoa deveria ter uma árvore além de um anjo da guarda para ir indo), resolvi (...) conhecer, na intimidade, o Parque do Cocó que nos habita”, escreve em sua coluna de domingo no jornal O Povo, edição de 4 de agosto de 2012.

“Para entrar em Paradisus,”, escreve Demitri, “eu acho e reescrevo Manoel de Barros, é recomendável que se entre em estado de árvore”.

Fortaleza é uma cidade que ainda constrói viadutos e mata árvore para alargar vias para automóveis particulares, o meio de transporte menos incentivado em qualquer ação de política pública sensível. A matança da vida, sabemos, se dá de vários modos. Na segunda parte do livro, impulsionada pela presença do Sérgio Helle na edição 2018 do LabVerde – Programa de Imersão Artística na Amazônia, veremos o projeto ampliado de destruição maciça e contínua das florestas que são quase metade do território do Brasil.

Viagem à Amazônia é a segunda parte do livro. O texto “Amazônia, paisagem invisível”, da curadora Lilian Fraiji, apresenta o LabVerde – Programa de Imersão Artística na Amazônia. Sérgio Helle foi selecionado e participou da edição 2018, a quarta desde que foi implementado em 2013.

Duas outras edições aconteceram em 2016 e 2017. Realiza-se com apoio do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia. O texto, o único do livro que não tem a versão para o inglês realizada por Hamilton Moura Ribeiro e Tânia Caldas, foi gentilmente cedido pela autora, e apresenta o catálogo da edição 2017 do LabVerde: “Parece uma grande ironia considerar invisível um dos principais ícones naturais do planeta, a Amazônia. Todos nós temos uma memória sobre esse lugar, o conhecemos, o projetamos, o imaginamos, sem mesmo termos estado ali. E é essa construção mental coletiva que torna essa paisagem tão real”.

Escreve Lilian: “O que é pouco narrado, ou ainda silenciado, é como a Amazônia é usurpada. Dentro da maior Floresta do mundo existe uma paisagem representada pelo desenvolvimento de grandes infraestruturas e megaobras, expansão da monocultura da soja e da pecuária extensiva, aniquilamento de culturas milenares e exploração de recursos hídricos e minerais; uma paisagem invisível, construída por um ciclo de extermínio da vida”.

A matança, repetimos, se dá de muitos modos.

Os artistas participantes do LabVerde apresentam o que fazem, como fazem, no início da imersão. Ao final, dizem das ressonâncias dos dias intensivos na floresta nos trabalhos que virão a fazer. Sérgio Helle apresentou, então, a proposição de realizar infogravuras tendo como superfície de impressão as chamadas Pedra Cariri: “Vou seguir com a folha do torém, a folha da embaúba, a folha que dá início à série Paradisus. Imagens delas serão impressas nas Pedra Cariri, como se fossem fósseis”.

A Pedra Cariri, lavras de calcário, nomina um dos nove geossítios do GeoPark Araripe, na Bacia de Sedimentação do Araripe, junto a Chapada do Araripe. O GeoPark Araripe fica no Sul do Ceará, no Cariri, região que reúne 28 cidades e abrange os municípios de Barbalha, Crato – onde Sérgio Helle nasceu– Juazeiro, Missão Velha e Santana do Cariri, e faz limite com os estados do Piauí, Pernambuco e Paraíba.

Parte da história da Terra, capítulos da paleontologia e geologia, estão registrados em fósseis abundantes na região do GeoPark Araripe. Leio no livro Geopark Araripe - Histórias da Terra, do Meio Ambiente e da Cultura, página 44: “Os fósseis da Bacia do Araripe vêm sendo estudados desde a época do Brasil Colônia, quando, em 1800, João da Silva Feijó descreveu, em relatório ao governador da Capitania do Ceará, a ocorrência de petrificações de peixes e anfíbios com tecidos moles preservados, provenientes da região do Cariri. Ao longo do século XIX, foram realizadas inúmeras expedições de naturalistas europeus para estudar o material fossilífero da Bacia do Araripe. Durante o século XX, os estudos de paleontologia na região foram intensificados e começaram a mostrar a real grandeza da biodiversidade preservada nas rochas da região. Publicado em 2012 pelas secretarias das Cidades e Ciências e Tecnologia do Governo do Ceará, o livro tem edição digital de acesso gratuito, além da versão impressa.

Os fósseis como páginas e páginas de um livro, ou livros e livros, produzidos em uma larga experiência de tempo. Uma escala tão complexa e grandiosa quanto a história da vida na Terra, que nos antecede a nós, humanos. Um tempo que se conta em milhões, em bilhões de anos.

Da folha do torém que o originou ao torém feito fóssil que Sérgio apresenta no fim que é anúncio de um outro começo, o livro que você tem nas mãos é uma

tentativa de inscrever parte da admiração e do espanto diante da vida como uma força da natureza. Vida-morte-vida, a transformação como o perene da vida manifesta. Na crônica do Demitri aqui citada, ele convida à leitura da série Expedição Cocó, publicada n’O Povo, sobre os seus primeiros mil dias a descobrir mundos até então invisíveis. “Em uma das páginas, uma narrativa sobre o registro de mais de trinta borboletas e a conclusão de que não compreendemos, ainda, o que é vida coletiva e sustentável. Solidária. Tão integradas, larva e borboleta, que não há como saber se morrem numa ligeireza de semanas ou se têm vida infinita porque uma se reveza com a outra”.

Paradisus é, pois, uma reverência ao sagrado, à criação. A nos lembrar os profetas da chuva reunidos em seu encontro anual no Sertão Central do Ceará, ensinando-nos a ler o que não cessa de variar, a natureza em sua pulsante amplitude, que eles, leitores sofisticados em seus saberes de expressão individual e feitura coletiva, chamam de livro.

The trees have also given us books. Beyond the raw material, the trees have bequeathed to us even the name of the matter, support – surface, of the many books we know. I here re-read and re-write the origin of the word Paper: papyrus, from the Cyperus papyrus tree.

As for the book you have in your hands, its first sheet is literally the leaf of a tree. Sérgio Helle starts thinking about the Paradisus series after looking, and seeing, a leaf of torém. Dry, parched, withered. As breakable as glass.

Relief, geometry. Light, shadow. Twisted, contorted, an architecture of folds around itself.

It is the torém leaf that originates the book you have in your hands. It is dead. And it says of how life can express itself. It would generate life on the ground, in the soil, in the woods, in the forests where we can find it, and where it came from. It died as torém, still it is life we talk of. Ground filled with dead leaves, and other residues of life as it can be, constitute what is called topsoil, a bed – a cradle of nutrients, fertile soil, generating source.

Paradisus, the book, is therefore created. A Lumiar Publisher project, organized by Dora Freitas. It has photos taken by Bruno Zanardo, Jarbas Oliveira and Sérgio himself. Cláudia Albuquerque presents Sérgio Helle to us in the interview carried out in his studio, his daily workplace. Acute listening – writing. “Elaborate, as in any exchange, the conversation depends both on silence as well as on attention to details”, she writes in the text that functions as a script for connection – an appraisal of Sérgio Helle’s path and of the way he works, composes and produces.

Cláudia Albuquerque writes: “Born in Crato in 1964, Sérgio Helle came to Fortaleza with his family at the age of 10, bringing with him some vague visual memories: Sinhá D’Amora (Lavras da Mangabeira, Ceará, 1906 – Rio de Janeiro, 2002) in the Museu do Crato museum, Aldemir Martins (Ingazeiras, Cariri, Ceará, 1922 – São Paulo, 2006), hanging on the wall at

one of his aunts’ house, Chico da Silva (Alto Tejo, Acre, 1910 – Fortaleza, 1985) found in a drawer in the family home (“no one ever knew whether they were masters of just copies”).”

The first Cariri and the Amazon cross - the destination of another trip that would take place more than 30 years after the first one, and which gives the title to the second part of the book. A move; the family leaving the south of Ceará state, the countryside, and going to the capital city on the coast, more than 500km away. Other migrations, such as that of the three artists mentioned. And two strong features – of ballast and trace – in the world of the arts coming from Ceará. I am speaking more specifically of Aldemir Martins and Chico da Silva, in order to mention a place where Sérgio, years after having arrived in Fortaleza, would do courses and enjoy the company of artists, while being able to better observe the drawing of the former and admire the latter, the colorist, both granted permanent art rooms at the Museum of Art of the Federal University of Ceará – Mauc.

Befere meeting with Cláudia Albuquerque, he met writer Tércia Montenegro in the studio; and then, journalist Demitri Túlio. Views that broaden ours.

Repertoires we start sharing.

For Tércia Montenegro, in Paradisus, “sacred nature overflows”. A fictionist, she helps us understand things in clusters. When writing about trees, she invites memory in, fabulous and unstoppable island of edition, matter and workshop: “(...) then once I saw a fallen tree ripped out by a storm. I saw its viscera as if it had been killed in a bombing – and then I understood. The legs of the tree are the whole ground.” Yes, a view to broaden ours.

Some days after, during the morning, Sérgio and I, immersed in Parque do Cocó park, guided by Demitri Tulio, would also experiment the soil as the body of the tree, a body in life, a living body, the very often mentioned and perhaps little understood complexity of life, the vibrant web, pulsing.

In the same morning he stayed with us in the studio and in the backyard of the building where Sérgio lives and works – there is house/home and house/ studio -I suggested, and Demitri immediately agreed, he guide us through the urban forest which Fortaleza, so to speak, ignores. He dedicates time to lovingly listen in his nearly daily visits: “And because we need a forest to live (each person should have a tree besides a guarding angel to go on),

I have decided (...) to intimately get to know the Parque do Cocó park that lives in us”, he writes in his Sunday column in the O Povo newspaper, in the August 4, 2012 edition.

“To enter Paradisus”, writes Demitri, “I believe and quote Manoel de Barros, it is advisable to get into a tree state of mind.”

Fortaleza is a city that continues building overpasses and killing trees to widen the roads for private automobiles, the less recommended means of transportation in any reasonable public policy. We know that killing happens in many different ways. In the second part of the book, driven by the presence of Sérgio Helle in the 2018 edition of LabVerde – Artistic Immersion Program in the Amazon, we will see a bigger project of massive and continuous destruction of the forests, which compose almost half of the Brazilian territory.

Trip to the Amazon is the second part of the book. The text “Amazonia, invisible landscape”, by the curator Lilian Fraiji, presents LabVerde – Artistic Immersion Program in the Amazon. Sérgio Helle was selected and participated in the 2018 edition, the fourth since its launching in 2013. Two other editions were held in 2016 and 2017. It is sponsored by the National Institute for Research in the Amazon. The text, the only one in the book whose translation into English was not done by Hamilton Moura Ribeiro and Tânia Caldas, has been kindly provided by the author. It presents the catalogue for the 2017 edition of LabVerde: “It is extremely ironic that one of the main natural icons of the planet, the Amazon, may be considered invisible. We all have a memory about this place, we know it, we project it even without having been there. It is this collective mental construction that makes this landscape so real.”

Lilian writes on: “What is seldom told, or even silenced, is the way in which the Amazon is usurped. Within the world’s largest forest, there is a landscape represented by the development of large infrastructure and mega works, expansion of the soy monoculture and extensive cattle ranching, annihilation of millennial cultural practices and exploitation of hydraulic and mineral resources; an invisible landscape, built by a cycle of extermination.”

Killing, we reinforce, happens in many different ways.

The artists participating in the LabVerde present what they do and how they do it at the beginning of the immersion. At the end, they express the resonance of the intensive days in the forest in the works they will develop.

Sérgio Helle then presented the proposition of creating digital art images (infogravuras), using the Cariri Stone as a printing surface: “I will continue with the torém leaf, the leaf of the embauba, the leaf that starts the Paradisus series. Their images will be printed on Cariri Stones, as if they were fossils.”

Cariri Stone, deposits of limestone, is the name given to one of the nine geosites of the Araripe GeoPark, located in the Araripe Sedimentary Basin, next to the Araripe Plateau. The Araripe GeoPark is located in the south of Ceará state, in Cariri, a region comprising 28 cities. The Araripe GeoPark includes the municipalities of Barbalha, Crato – where Sérgio Helle was born– Juazeiro, Missão Velha and Santana do Cariri, and borders the states of Piauí, Pernambuco and Paraíba.

Part of the history of Earth, chapters of paleontology and geology, are recorded in fossils which are abundant in the region of the Araripe GeoPark. I quote from the book, Geopark Araripe – History of the Earth, of the Environment and Culture, page44: “Fossils found in the Araripe Basin have been studied since Colonial Brazil, when, in 1800, João da Silva Feijó reported to the governor of the Ceará Captaincy the discovery of fish and amphibian petrification with the preservation of soft tissue in the Cariri region. Throughout the 19th century, various expeditions were carried out by European naturalists to study the fossiliferous material found in the Araripe Basin. In the 20th century, the paleontological studies in the region were intensified and started to show the true greatness of the biodiversity preserved in the rocks of the region. Published in 2012 by the Department of Cities, Science and Technology of the Ceará state government, besides its printed version, the digital book can be accessed for free.

Fossil as pages and pages of a book, or books and books, produced in vast experience acquired with time. A scale which is so complex and monumental as the history of life on Earth, which precedes us, humans. Time elapsed in millions, billions of years.

From the torém leaf which has originated it, to the torém turned into fossill that Sérgio presents at the end as being the announcement of another

beginning, the book you have in your hands is an attempt to register part of the admiration and awe before life as a force of nature. Life-death-life, the transformation which is manifested by perennial life. In Demitri’s chronicle here mentioned, he invites us to read the series Cocó Expedition, published in the O Povo newspaper, about his first a thousand days discovering worlds so far invisible. “On one of the pages, there is a narrative on the record of more than thirty butterflies and the conclusion that we do not understand, yet, the meaning of collective and sustainable life. Sympathetic. They are so integrated, larva and butterfly, there is no way to know if they die in the haste of a few weeks, or if they have infinite life because one takes turn with the other.”

Paradisus is, therefore, a reverence to the sacred, to creation. It reminds us of the rain prophets gathering in their annual meeting in Central Sertão in Ceará, teaching us how to read what is constantly changing, nature in its pulsating amplitude, which they, sophisticated readers with their knowledge showing in individual expression and collective making, call book.

No livro A Câmara Clara, Roland Barthes cita um episódio em que Gustav Janouch, aspirante a escriba, insiste com Franz Kafka, já autor de A Metamorfose, que “a condição prévia para a imagem é a visão.” Ao que Kafka, sorrindo, responde: “Fotografam-se coisas para expulsá-las do espírito. Minhas histórias são uma maneira de fechar os olhos.”

Fechar os olhos: fazer a imagem falar no silêncio, a fim de que se possa sentir “para além daquilo que nos é dado ver.” A folha da embaúba, a camisa dobrada, o abraço no cinema, o reflexo da água, a raiz do abricó-de-macaco.

Desde os anos 1980, as imagens que atraem o olhar de Sérgio Helle se transformam em trabalhos que, tendo a pintura como índice, ampliam o vocabulário para dialogar com outros meios e histórias. Caprichosa, como em todo intercâmbio, a conversa depende tanto do silêncio quanto da atenção aos detalhes.

“Em 1988, quando fiz minha primeira exposição individual, o que me despertou foi a imagem de um abraço visto em um filme. Eu ficava parando a fita do videocassete para desenhar a cena. A partir daí comecei a prestar atenção em todos os abraços de filmes. Depois, passei a fotografar as telas da TV, que na época tinham a chamada linha de varredura, que aparecia no meio da imagem quando a revelávamos. Eu precisava bater muitas fotos para chegar à imagem desejada.”

E assim nascem as séries. Quando o olhar, sem aviso prévio ou plano de pouso, avista um ponto que inaugura uma narrativa. Disciplinado, Sérgio considera que tem uma forma onívora de trabalhar. Fotografa o que vislumbra como interessante e alimenta um banco de imagens que não para de crescer. Em “Dobras Moles”, por exemplo, que se detém sobre a sinuosidade dos tecidos, a fagulha invisível estava na banalidade cotidiana, aguardando em silêncio o resgate do olhar.

“Um dia, entrei no banheiro e encontrei uma camisa listrada jogada no chão. Olhei aquilo e vi um quadro pronto. Era tão bonita a forma assumida que eu fotografei.

Dobras Moles foi meu primeiro trabalho em que a figura humana não esteve presente.

Tive menos preocupações com a realidade e deixei as formas guiarem o caminho.”

Além da fotografia e do vídeo, que sempre lhe serviram de interlocutores, Sérgio foi um dos primeiros a ver nos bytes e pixels do universo digital uma porta de expansão criativa, sem cadeado para o palco das técnicas tradicionais. Hoje, o livre trânsito entre estes cenários permite que ele pinte tanto com pincéis quanto no computador. A alternância é proveitosa inclusive fisicamente, já que os movimentos repetitivos da caneta ou do pincel são fonte de desconforto. Mudando a técnica, mudam não só os gestos, mas também a visão do trabalho.

“Toda a minha trajetória, desde a pintura a óleo, os desenhos de observação, de modelo vivo, as experiências acadêmicas pelas quais passei, tudo isso foi essencial para o que faço hoje. Costumo preparar as telas das infogravuras com pinceladas antes da impressão, isso dá ao resultado final uma textura que me agrada. Deixa mais evidente a mistura do gestual da pintura no computador com o gestual da pincelada física. As pinceladas não são usadas para ‘simular uma pintura’, mas para evidenciar esse diálogo entre a pintura tradicional e as ferramentas digitais.”

Um diálogo que começou numa década em que a ideia de infogravura não era muito bem aceita, nem sequer compreendida, já que os computadores figuravam como um luxo restrito. Os equipamentos eram toscos para os padrões atuais: uma tela verde e uma entrada para disquetes. Quando foi para a França e vislumbrou o primeiro computador com imagem, Sérgio ficou louco. O verbete “infogravura” nem existia, e as limitações técnicas eram consideráveis.

“Sempre fui muito interessado em tecnologia, que foi se incorporando ao meu trabalho de acordo com minhas descobertas e o seu desenvolvimento. Hoje eu faço minha tela, escolho a superfície em que quero imprimir, e a qualidade da impressão é excelente. O computador entrou na vida de todas as profissões. Na época em que comecei, precisei escrever um texto explicando o que era infogravura.”

Infogravura: trabalho em que a matriz é um arquivo digital. Necessário uma mesa digitalizadora. E talento, como em qualquer arte. As pinturas são impressões, devidamente numeradas, com tiragens de 20. Sérgio considera que são 20 originais, pois não são fotos reproduzidas. São arquivos criados e trabalhados com uma intenção específica.

“Eu tenho uma amiga que diz que eu já usava computador antes de existir computador. Eu tirava uma cópia num papel transparente, virava, ampliava.

Depois colava em grandes painéis e pintava em cima. Tudo na marra.”

Nascido no Crato, em 1964, Sérgio Helle veio para Fortaleza com a família aos 10 anos, trazendo na bagagem algumas vagas lembranças visuais: Sinhá D’Amora no Museu do Crato, Aldemir Martins na parede de uma tia, Chico da Silva numa gaveta da família (“nunca soube se eram originais ou cópias”).

Entrou para a publicidade aos 18 anos, quando a arte dos anúncios ainda era feita com a aquosidade do guache, na errância da mão, e as letras diligentemente recortadas e coladas, uma a uma. Labuta de meio expediente, pois o outro era dedicado à pintura. Sintetiza esse processo dizendo que sempre teve “profissão dupla”. Até que chegou um tempo em que passou a trabalhar em casa e, aos poucos, foi diminuindo os clientes, ficando só com a pintura.

“Eu acho que o artista pode inventar e fazer o que ele quiser. Ele só tem que ser muito claro em relação ao que está oferecendo às pessoas.”

Antes da mesa digitalizadora, muitas águas rolaram, inclusive experimentos com xerox, gravura em metal, xilogravura, papéis artesanais, pigmentos, lápis, pastéis oleosos, fotocópias.

“Eu sempre gostei muito da ideia da reprodução, porque o meu trabalho é muito lento. E, por causa desse ritmo, penso que nunca conseguiria produzir o suficiente para vender e montar uma exposição. Então, a gravura para mim era indispensável, e meu grande desejo era fazer um trabalho que tivesse a ver com reprodução.”

Há seis anos, conseguiu montar seu ateliê no mesmo prédio em que tem um apartamento. “Agora é minha vez”, pensou. Desde então, tem o dia inteiro para se dedicar ao trabalho, mas para que isso se tornasse possível, foi preciso traçar estratégias. Sérgio faz o projeto gráfico e cuida pessoalmente da diagramação de cada livro.

“Muitos artistas renegam a estética ou não dão grande importância a ela. A maioria tem, hoje, uma certa repulsa pela palavra. Para mim, ela sempre foi um elemento norteador na relação com o meu trabalho e até com as obras que eu adquiro. Gosto dessa sensação de bem-estar no convívio com a obra.”

Há quatro anos, estava ainda envolvido com série Fragmenta quando viu uma folha que o levou ao Paradisus, trabalho que vem desenvolvendo desde então.

“Comecei a trabalhar nessa série a partir das folhas de torém. Vi uma delas por acaso, achei linda e me pus a desenhar. A partir daí, meu olhar passou a se direcionar para tudo quanto é planta que morreu. Para mim, as plantas mortas são esteticamente mais interessantes que as vivas, por causa de suas formas.”

A rigor, fazendo um passeio por seus arquivos fotográficos, ele percebe que já havia referências à natureza há muitos anos. É bem verdade que só depois o olhar ficou mais aguçado para os aspectos do ressecamento e da morte. Sérgio repete que gosta de “misturar tudo”. Isso significa juntar uma planta recolhida no quintal com outra vista no Jardim Botânico ou, quem sabe, com aquela que foi encontrada numa passagem por Lisboa.

“A apreciação da arte ganha fôlego quando se tem acesso à informação. Não quero descartar a importância dos estudos eruditos. Porém, ao mesmo tempo, sabemos que qualquer pessoa pode ser tocada pela arte, da mesma forma que um especialista.

Recebo e-mails de pessoas me dizendo o quanto se sentiram tocadas com determinado quadro. Adoro isso, é uma alegria”.

Quando Sérgio Helle terminou o ensino médio, a mãe o aconselhou a estudar para um concurso público. “Vou nada! Já pensou se eu passo?”. Pois sempre quis ser artista e, quando lembra da infância, lembra-se de desenhos.

Daqueles tempos, traz algumas imagens e uma sensação. Tinha por volta de cinco anos e costumava pedir para a irmã mais velha desenhar figuras para ele. Um dia, de tanto implorar sem ser atendido, acabou ele mesmo desenhando um personagem copiado de uma HQ. Um Batman.

“Eu não lembro do desenho, obviamente, mas sim da sensação. A sensação de não precisar mais de ninguém, de poder desenhar o que eu quisesse, de conseguir inventar o que não existia antes e de poder criar livremente. Ali foi o clique. E acho que esse prazer eu persegui a vida toda.”

In Camera Lucida, Roland Barthes mentions an episode when Gustav Janouch, aspiring to be a scribe, argues with Franz Kafka, then the author of The Metamorphosis, that “sight is a condition prior to image.” Smiling, Kafka replies saying that “Objects are photographed so that they may be expelled from the spirit. My stories are a means to close the eyes.”

Closing the eyes: having an image communicate in silence so that one may feel “beyond what is allowed to be seen.” The leaf of the embauba, the folded shirt, the hug at the movies, the reflections in the water, the root of the cannonball tree. Since the 1980’s, the images that attract Sérgio Helle’s eye have been changed into projects which, having painting as their index, expand the vocabulary in order to dialogue with other means and stories.

Elaborate, as in any exchange, the conversation depends both on silence and on attention to details.

“In 1988, when I got my first individual exhibition, what first called my attention was a hugging scene in a movie. I continuously stopped the video cassette tape to draw the scene. From then on, I would pay attention to all the hugging scenes in movies. Then, I started to photograph TV screens, which at that time had the socalled scan line. That line appeared in the middle of the image once it had been developed. I would take several photos before I got the image I wanted.”

And that is how the series are created. When the eye, with no previous warning or landing plan, envisages a spot that starts a narrative. Disciplined, Sérgio believes he works in an omnivorous way. He photographs whatever he sees as interesting and keeps an image database which is in constant expansion. In “Dobras Moles”, for instance, which emphasizes fabric sinuosity, the invisible spark lied in the banality of everyday life, silently awaiting to be rescued by the eye.

“I once entered the bathroom and found a striped shirt left on the floor. I looked at that and saw a finished painting. The assumed form I photographed was truly beautiful. “Dobras Moles” was the first piece I produced in which the human figure was not present. I was less worried about the reality and let the forms lead the way.”

Besides photography and video, which have always been his interlocutors, Sérgio soon started to see the bytes and pixels of the digital universe as a door for creative expansion, with no lock on the stage of traditional techniques.

Today, the free transit between these scenarios allows him to paint using paintbrushes as well as computer tools. With the change in technique, not only the gestures, but also the vision of the work has changed.

“The path I have walked up to now, from oil painting to drawings based on observations and live models and to the academic experience I had, all of that has been essential for what I do today. I usually prepare the canvas for the digital art images with brushstrokes before printing, which gives the final result a texture that pleases me. It makes the mixture of digital painting with the physical brushstrokes more evident. The brushstrokes are not intended to ‘simulate painting’, but to show evidence of the dialogue between traditional painting and digital tools.”

This dialogue started in a decade when the idea of digital print was not well accepted, let alone understood, since computers were considered a luxury product. Computers then were very simple compared to current standards – a green screen and a floppy disk drive. When he went to France and first saw an image on a computer, Sérgio went crazy. There was no entry for “digital print” on the Internet, and there were considerable technical limitations.

“I have always been extremely interested in technology, which has been gradually incorporated into my work according to my discoveries and its development.

Nowadays I make the canvas, choose the surface on which I want to print, and the print quality is perfect. Computers are now used in every profession. When I started, I had to write a text explaining what digital print was.”

Digital print: work which uses a digital file as matrix. It requires a tablet, and of course, talent, as in any art. The paintings are prints, all properly numbered, with a print run of 20 copies. Sérgio sees them as 20 master copies, since they are not reproduced photos. They are files created and worked on with a specific intention.

“A friend of mine says that I already used a computer before it even existed. I would take a copy on transparent paper, turn it over, and amplify it. Then, I would glue it on huge panels and paint on top of it. All done in a rudimental way.”

Born in Crato, State of Ceará, Brazil, in 1964, Sérgio Helle came to Fortaleza with his family at the age of 10, bringing with him vague visual memories: Sinhá D’Amora (Lavras da Mangabeira, Ceará, 1906 – Rio de Janeiro, 2002) in the Museu do Crato museum, Aldemir Martins (Ingazeiras, Cariri, Ceará, 1922 – São Paulo, 2006), hanging on the wall at one of his aunts’ house, Chico da Silva (Alto Tejo, Acre State, 1910 – Fortaleza, 1985) found in a drawer in the family home (“no one ever knew whether they were masters or just copies”). He started studying advertising at 18, when the art in the ads was created using the watery consistency of gouache, with an unsteady hand, and having the letters diligently cut and glued one by one.

This work was done as a part time job, since the other period of the day was dedicated to painting. He summarizes this process saying that he always had a “dual career.” With the passing of time he started working at home, and was soon dedicating full time to painting.

“I believe an artist can create and do whatever pleases him/her. However, he or she needs to be very clear as to what they are offering to people.”

Before the tablet, there were experiments such as with xerox copies, metal engraving, woodcut, handmade paper, pigments, glue, pencil, oil pastel and photocopies.

“I’ve always liked the idea of reproduction very much because my work takes time to be finalized. Because of that pace, I always thought I would never be able to produce enough material to get an exhibition. That is why the illustration was essential for me, and my biggest wish was to develop a project involving reproduction.”

Six years ago, he managed to set up his studio in the same building where he has an apartment. “It’s my turn now”, he thought. Since then he has been dedicating the whole day to his work. But for this to become possible, he had to outline some strategies. Sérgio develops the graphic design and personally provides the layout for each book.

“Many artists repudiate esthetics or give it little importance. Most of them are averse to the written word. In my opinion, it has always been a guiding element in my relationship with my work and even with the pieces I acquire. I like the feeling of well-being in my relationship with the work of art.”

Four years ago, when he was still working on the “Fragmenta” series, he saw a leaf that took him to “Paradisus”, a project he has been developing since then.

“I started working on this series based on the torém leaves. I saw one of them by chance. I found it beautiful and started drawing it. From that point on, my eye was attracted to every dead plant. In my opinion, dead plants are esthetically more interesting than living ones because of their forms.”

Going over his photography files, he notices that there had already been references to nature for many years.

It is true, however, that only later did his eye become keener on the aspects of dryness and death. Sérgio repeats over again that he likes to “mix it all.” That means to put together some plant collected from the backyard with another seen at the Botanic Garden in Rio de Janeiro or, who knows, with that one found when visiting Lisbon.

“Art appreciation increases with access to information. I don’t mean to neglect the importance of scholarly learning. However, it is known that any person can be sensitive to art. I receive e-mails from people telling me how much they have been responsive to a certain painting. I love that. It’s pure joy.”

When Sérgio Helle finished High School, his mother advised him to study for a selection for public office. “No way! What if I pass?”. The thing is he had always wanted to be an artist and, when he looks back to his childhood, it’s the drawings that come to his mind. He has memories of some images and feelings from that time. When he was about five, he used to ask his oldest sister to draw pictures for him. One day, after begging to no avail, he ended up drawing the character copied from a comic book. Batman.

“I obviously don’t remember the drawing, but I do remember the feeling. The feeling of being able to draw whatever I wanted, of being able to create what hadn’t existed before, and of being able to create freely. That was the click. And I believe I’ve pursued this pleasure my whole life.”

Desenhar é a lembrança mais remota que tenho. Lembro claramente do meu primeiro desenho, aos cinco anos. Tenho poucas lembranças da minha infância, mas essa é incrivelmente clara. O desenho foi se tornando cada vez mais o meu maior interesse. Costumava recortar e guardar imagens que me instigavam. Aos dez anos já tinha um arquivo imenso de imagens separadas por assuntos. Era minha “biblioteca”, minhas referências. Podia ser a foto de um quadro que eu gostasse das cores ou composição, foto de uma árvore, um bicho, uma mão... tudo que esteticamente me chamasse atenção.

Ainda hoje uso como suporte um banco de imagens que crio para cada série. Faço milhares de fotos do meu objeto de interesse que mais tarde, de alguma forma, fazem parte da composição do trabalho.

Essa mistura de sobreposições, transparências, simulações da realidade e novas possibilidades só possíveis com novas ferramentas tecnológicas é a essência do meu trabalho.

Ele é desenvolvido em duas vertentes: a pintura e a infogravura. Nos dois casos existe uma estrutura prévia, desenvolvida no computador que pode utilizar imagens fotográficas do objeto em questão, de pinceladas que faço em azulejos e depois fotografo... tudo que faz parte de um repertório próprio daquele tempo. Depois de definida a estrutura do trabalho ele vai ser pintado com técnica mista (acrílica, pigmentos, lápis de cor e pastel oleoso) ou pintado no computador com softwares de manipulação de imagens como o Photoshop ou ArtRage. Costumo preparar as telas com pinceladas antes da impressão, isso dá ao resultado final uma textura que me agrada, deixa mais evidente a mistura do gestual da pintura no computador com o gestual da pincelada física. As pinceladas não são usadas para “simular” uma pintura, mas sim para evidenciar esse diálogo entre a pintura tradicional e as novas tecnologias. No caso das infogravuras, que é como chamo os trabalhos pintados no computador e impressos, é feita uma tiragem geralmente de 20 peças em telas, 10 em pedra, ou 50 no caso de pequenos trabalhos impressos em papel.

Sempre tive a pintura como fio condutor da minha obra. O trabalho se desenvolveu através de uma pesquisa de técnicas influenciadas pelo percurso e contingências. De início foram pinturas a óleo, depois acrílica e técnica mista, com cada vez mais materiais incorporados a essa busca.

O computador entrou como ferramenta de uma forma discreta em meados dos anos noventa e foi se tornando peça fundamental no desenvolvimento dessa trajetória. Com o tempo descobertas iam se incorporando ao trabalho em novas experências, qualidade de impressão e softwares com cada vez mais recursos e possibilidades. O diálogo entre a pintura e novas tecnologias são como um encontro de épocas distintas, reinventadas e mescladas entre pigmentos e pixels. O resultado final são infogravuras em telas, geralmente de grandes formatos e pinturas em técnica mista previamente estruturadas no computador. Mesmo as infogravuras vejo como pintura, uma pintura reinventada neste complexo tecido de relações entre o tradicional e a tecnologia.

O foco de interesse foi com o tempo ficando mais fluido e em alguns momentos a abstração toma mais espaço. A série Paradisus é uma reverência ao sagrado, minha declaração de amor à natureza. Dessas referências surge a estrutura básica do trabalho. Gosto das formas orgânicas, das folhas ressecadas e retorcidas, principalmente das folhas de embaúba, de dar cores às formas já mortas, mas que carregam em si uma vitalidade e força só à espera do olhar.

Drawing is the most remote memory I have. I clearly remember my first drawing at the age of five. I have few memories of my childhood, but this one is incredibly clear. Drawing increasingly became my biggest interest. I used to cut and keep images that intrigued me. At the age of ten, I already had a huge file of images separated by topics. That was my “library”, my list of references.

It might be the photo of a painting whose colors or composition I liked, the photo of a tree, an animal, a hand… everything that would esthetically call my attention.

I continue using an image database that I create as a support for each series. I take various photos of the object I am interested in, which will later, somehow, make part of the work composition.

The mixture of superpositions, transparencies, simulations of reality and new possibilities that are only possible due to new technological tools is the essence of my work.

This is developed on two grounds: painting and digital print. In both cases, a previous structure is developed on the computer. This may use photographic images of the object, of brushstrokes I apply on tiles ‌ everything that is part of a repertoire intrinsic to that time. After its structure has been defined, the work will be painted either with mixed techniques (acrylic, pigments, colored pencils and oil pastels) or on the computer, using image manipulation software such as Photoshop or ArtRage. In both cases I work on canvas made by myself. I often prepare the canvas of digital prints with strokes before printing, this gives the final result a texture that I like. It makes the mixture of the gestural of the painting in the computer with the gestural of the physical brushstroke more evident. The brushstrokes are not used to “simulate paintingâ€?, but rather to highlight this dialogue between traditional painting and the new technologies. In the case of the digital print images (I call the works painted on the computer and then printed infogravuras), there is usually a print run of 20 pieces, of 10 on stone, or of 50 when small works are printed on paper.

Painting has always guided my work, which has developed through a research of techniques influenced by the path and contingencies. I started using oil, then acrylic and a mixed technique, having increasingly more materials incorporated in this search.

The computer was discretely incorporated as a tool in the middle of the 1990s, and then it gradually became essential in the development of this path. With time, other discoveries were incorporated into the work with new experiences, quality of the prints, and software that had more resources and possibilities. The dialogue between painting and new technologies resembles a reunion of different times, reinvented and merged among pigments and pixels. The final result is digital images on canvas, usually in large formats, and paintings using mixed technique previously structured on the computer. I see the digital art as paintings; a reinvented painting in this complex matrix of relations between tradition and technology.

With time, the focus became more fluid, and sometimes abstraction takes on more space. The Paradisus series is a reverence for the sacred, my declaration of love for nature. I’ve used natural leaves as the foundation and backbone of this series, exploring the organic forms of dry and twisted leaves, especially from the embaúba trees, applying color to dead forms, but which carry in themselves a vitality and power which is only awaiting to be looked at.

O trabalho é cotidiano. O trajeto é curto: Sérgio tem casa e ateliê no mesmo prédio. Mora no terceiro andar. O ateliê fica no quinto. É cheio de sol.

O fotógrafo Jarbas Oliveira é um repórter, um documentarista de larga experiência. Já viu e registrou mulheres e homens em situação de trabalho as mais diversas. Seu livro “Da cor do Norte - Brinquedos de Miriti” - a palmeira que se transforma em barco, boneca, boto etc -, é uma festa, um ato de fé no trabalho, quase sempre invisível e anônimo, do mundo feito a mão pelas gentes de Abaetetuba, no Pará. Um outro modo de trabalhar com a natureza.

It is a daily work. The route is short. Sergio’s house and studio are in the same building. He lives on the third floor. His studio is on the fifth. It is brilliantly sunny.

The photographer Jarbas Oliveira is a reporter, a long-time documentarian.

He has already seen and recorded men and women in the most diverse work situation. In his book “Da cor do Norte – Brinquedos de Miriti” (In the color of the North. The Miriti Toys from Abaetetuba), the palm tree turns into a boat, a doll, a river dolphin, etc.- it is a party to the eye, an act of faith in work, almost always invisible and anonymous, of the world made by the people from Abaetetuba, in Pará. It is another way to work with nature.

At Sergio Helle’s studio, the photographer observes it so that we can better see a part, almost always invisible, of the work.

Sergio works with digital tools and traditional drawing and painting techniques. He has an assistant, to stretch, to open canvas; he prepares the surfaces on which he is going to paint, draw or print; he files, goes through the archived materials, and composes with them. Whether it is a dry leave, its image printed on the book or sliding on the monitor screen.

No princípio, era o Paraíso. O mito, a ficção, o mundo vegetal perfeito.

Sérgio Helle em sua nova série nos leva a esse regresso de êxtases. Mas aqui o paraíso está cheio de mudanças acontecendo. Cada tela mostra uma transformação da natureza – com a presença da morte também. Ora, introduzir a morte no paraíso é um grande risco; ela vem sempre como sinal de dor, castigo ou sofrimento nas interpretações convencionais. Entretanto a arte, em seu propósito mais vigoroso, buscar romper com o previsível. No Paradisus de Helle a finitude surge bela e tranquila.

A morte nas folhas acontece de modo limpo, delicado e poético – não há nada grotesco nessa existência que desaparece pela gradual mudança de cor, pela água que se evapora e deixa um corpo crepitante, quebradiço, esfarelável. Não há cheiros pestilentos, miasmas nocivos: no mundo vegetal o fim encontra sua expressão menos agressiva. A natureza se torna generosa com os seres imóveis; talvez sua decrepitude seja indolor.

Eu lembro quando, criança, me disseram que as folhas caíam das árvores como os cabelos caem espontaneamente de uma cabeça – não eram membros amputados, como eu pensava, num horror infantil; os galhos, sim, seriam membros, braços. Mas as folhas pareciam com os cabelos. As árvores carecas do sertão seriam idosos sob um sol inclemente, mas idosos encantados, capazes de surgir com suas cabeleiras verdes e esplêndidas na outra estação.

Diferentes comparações me vieram depois. As folhas eram os pulmões, o respiradouro das árvores, o seu fôlego na forma de pelagem. Ou seriam também os seus olhos, observando e criando paisagens. Eu gostava de pensar nessa ideia de criaturas com múltiplas visadas, com tantos olhos quanto uma centopeia teria patas. E, além do privilégio de ver tudo por todos os ângulos, elas teriam a capacidade de enviar um daqueles órgãos a passeio. Vinha um vento e... puft! Lá ia um olho velejando no ar, viajando de um jeito que a própria árvore jamais poderia, tão infelizmente presa vivia.

Eu tinha pena das plantas, grudadas pelo tronco. Achava que estavam sob feitiço, sofrendo como alguém eternamente condenado ao jogo da estátua.

Mas então certa vez encontrei uma árvore caída, arrancada por um temporal. Eu vi suas vísceras como ela tivesse morrido num bombardeio – e entendi. As pernas das árvores são o solo inteiro. Elas se movimentam por dentro, enquanto os outros seres andam por cima.

E ainda há as folhas, mensageiras. Não pode haver indivíduo mais livre.

Sérgio Helle celebra a liberdade vegetal, a sua predisposição paradisíaca. Sua arte nos carrega por um pensamento espiralado, à medida que fitamos estas plantas assumindo curvas, torneios. Cada quadro sugere uma tapeçaria, dessas que antigamente retratavam motivos sagrados.

É o éden em sua autenticidade: com silêncio e delicadezas, com tantas texturas e temperaturas que, se pudéssemos entrar num único desses ambientes, teríamos a experiência de um banho sensorial.

Há uma espécie de art nouveau essencial aqui. Sobretudo com o torém, a árvore da preguiça, com folhas que parecem mesmo se enrolar, procurar o feitio de conchas, a postura fetal.

Algumas telas passam uma impressão antiga, clássica. É como se descobríssemos um raro camafeu, ampliado. Ou o balé parado nas tramas de uma renda. Coisas que sobrevivem discretas neste contemporâneo high tech, que prega o asséptico mas ignora o aconchego. No entanto, enquanto não nos tornarmos serem completamente metálicos, com chips aderidos ao cérebro e computadores na corrente sanguínea, seremos propensos ao conforto da natureza. É isso, principalmente, o que Sérgio Helle nos lembra.

A arte pode ser um tipo de paraíso, inclusive. A criação restaura um senso do divino – embora sem associações religiosas, nada de inspiração sobrenatural ou leis do espírito. Refiro-me apenas à liturgia íntima do fazer artístico: seus procedimentos, rituais de nascimento. Toda obra passa por isso, um mínimo de bênção luminosa, por assim dizer. E esse facho de êxtase envolve muitas vezes um processo infernal. O artista – até que atinja o que almeja – pode se atormentar, penar em dúvidas, experiências confusas.

Aliás, o trabalho artístico, como qualquer outro, tem o seu lado de sacrifício.

Ainda levamos entranhada a crença bíblica da expulsão, com seu castigo: chega de bem-bom, vida contemplativa, colhendo os frutos permitidos e perenes. Tudo ganha esse amargor obrigatório a partir da sentença: necessário trabalhar para o próprio sustento. Mas o artista – se tem a finança como a parte mais problemática do ofício (basta ver a relação flutuante que a arte trava com pagamentos, cachês, vendas) – talvez seja o profissional mais felizardo em sua rotina. Porque, inquestionavelmente, trabalha criando.

Acrescentando coisas ao mundo. Crescendo.

A trajetória de Sérgio Helle mostra como o seu processo começa de modo sempre mágico: um estalo de imagem, que desencadeia uma série de atrações visuais. Com “Dobras moles”, foi uma camisa listrada jogada no chão do banheiro; em “Acqua”, a percepção da lente da água transformando os tecidos; em “Fragmenta”, a possibilidade de unir os resquícios de trabalhos anteriores, à maneira de um mosaico, com a chance de partir para a abstração e uma reflexão sobre a desmontagem e montagem de infogravuras, um make in off do fazer criativo.

Para esta nova série, talvez ele já se preparasse desde o arquivo de figuras que montou na infância, catalogando suas referências e construindo um paraíso particular. A importância da estética sobressai, o agradável à vista é crucial. O artista se transforma num arqueólogo vegetal, interessado em reviver a planta, ressuscitar o fóssil.

Mas este paraíso não tem qualquer sintoma de imobilidade eterna. Longe de ser um espaço onde o mundo congela, os quadros de Sérgio Helle nos convidam a uma experiência vibrante, por dentro das folhas: suas rugosidades crepitantes, seus tons múltiplos revividos. O sagrado da natureza transborda – e nos convida a um retorno às origens.

In the beginning, there was Paradise. The myth, the fiction, the perfect plant world. In his new series, Sérgio Helle takes us back to such ecstasies.

Yet, here paradise is in constant change. Each canvas shows a change in nature – and death is also present. Well, introducing death in paradise is a great risk; under conventional interpretations, death is always seen as a sign of pain, punishment or suffering. However, in its most vigorous purpose, art seeks to break with the predictable. In Helle’s Paradisus, finitude comes beautifully and quietly.

For the leaves, death comes in a clean, delicate and poetic way – there is nothing grotesque in this existence that disappears by the gradual change of color, in the evaporation of water that leaves a crackling, brittle, crumbly body. There are no pestilent smells, nor harmful miasmas; in the plant world, the end finds its less aggressive expression. Nature becomes generous with the immovable beings; their decrepitude is perhaps painless.

As a child, I remember people telling me that leaves fell from the trees just as hair fell spontaneously from the head – they were no amputated limbs as I used to think, taken by childish horror; branches, on the other hand, would be limbs, arms. Leaves resembled hair though. The leafless trees in the Brazilian semi-arid hinterland would be elderly people under the scorching sun; still, enchanted elderly, capable of showing their splendid green wigs in the following season.

Other comparisons dawned on me later. Leaves were the lungs, the breather for the trees, its breathing in the form of pelage. Or they might also be their eyes, observing and creating landscapes. I liked the idea of creatures with multiple sights, with as many eyes as a centipede has legs. And besides the privilege of seeing everything from every angle, they were able to send one of those organs for a walk. There came the wind and‌puff! There went an eye sailing the air, traveling in a way the tree itself would never do for it lived sadly trapped.

I felt sorry for the plants, stuck to their trunks. I believed they were under a spell, suffering like someone forever condemned to playing statues.

But then I once saw a fallen tree ripped out by a storm. I saw its viscera as if it had been killed in a bombing – then I understood. The legs of the tree are the whole ground. They move from within, while other beings walk above. And there are also the leaves, messengers. No one else could be as free.

Sérgio Helle celebrates the freedom of the plant world, its paradisiacal predisposition.

His art takes us through a spiral thinking as we observe these plants taking on curves, bends. Each painting suggests a tapestry similar to those which, in ancient times, depicted sacred geometry.

It is the Eden in its authenticity, with silence and fineness, with so many textures and temperatures that, should we be able to enter one of these environments, we would have the experience of a sensorial bath.

There is an essential kind of art nouveau here. Mainly regarding the torém, the lazy tree, with leaves that seem to curl around themselves, trying to resemble the shape of shells, of the fetal posture.

Some paintings portray an ancient, classic impression. It is like discovering a rare cameo, but amplified; or the static ballet in the pattern of embroidered lace. These are things that discretely survive in this contemporaneous high-tech world, which defends cleanness but ignores cosiness. However, not until we turn into completely metallic beings, with chips in our brains and computers in our bloodstream, will we be attracted to the comfort of nature. That is mainly what Sérgio Helle reminds us of.

Art can actually be a kind of paradise. Creation restores the sense of divine – although lacking religious associations, supernatural inspiration or spiritual laws. I am simply referring to the intimate liturgy of creating art, its procedures, rituals of birth. Every work of art goes through that, the slightest luminous blessing, so to speak. And such sparkle of joy most often includes an infernal process. The artist – before he or she accomplishes their objective – may become tormented, go deep in doubt, and have confusing experiences.

Actually, artistic creation, just like any job, asks for sacrifices. We bring it ingrained in our minds the belief in the biblical expulsion with its punishment: enough of such easy and contemplative life, collecting the allowed and perennial fruits. Everything gains a compulsory bitter taste with the statement: one must work for their own livelihood. Yet, the artist – should finance be their most problematic issue in their work (see the floating relationship that art has with payments, royalty payments, sales) – might be the luckiest professional in their routine, since they unquestionably work with creation, adding things to the world, growing.

Sérgio Helle’s path shows how his process always starts in a magical way, a snap image that initiates a series of visual attractions. In “Dobras moles”, there was the striped shirt left on the bathroom floor; in “Acqua”, the perception of the lens with the water changing the fabric; in “Fragmenta”, the possibility of binding together the remnants of previous works as in a mosaic, with the option of embracing abstraction and a reflection on the deconstruction and construction of digital print images, a making of the creative process.

He may have been preparing himself for this new series since the day he put together an image file in his childhood, cataloging his references and building a private paradise. The importance of aesthetics stands out; that which pleases the eye becomes essential. The artist changes into a paleontologist interested in reviving the plant, resuscitating the fossil.

However, such paradise shows no symptoms of eternal immobility. Far from being a space where the world has frozen, Sérgio Helle’s paintings invite us to a vibrant experience inside the leaves; their crackling roughness, their multiple shades revived. Sacred nature overflows – and invites us to return to the origins.

Para entrar em Paradisus, eu acho e reescrevo Manoel de Barros, é recomendável que se entre em estado de árvore.

Folhas secas, abricó-de-macaco.

Há obra de arte em folhas secas caídas do pé do torém ou no róseo das flores escancaradas de um abricó-de-macaco? Talvez as coisas “não existam” e, quando alguém as enxerga, despertam os sentidos da gente. Quando outros olhos nos fazem o favor de olhar por outro possível.

Os olhos... Que diante de tudo, no aperreio digital ou na cegueira urbana, não conseguem ver quase nada ou estão no que repete. Mesmo passando mil vezes, não percebem quantas possibilidades se oferecem.

Pois bem. Primeiro fui ao prédio do Sérgio Helle, um apartamento antigo com quintal e mais de duas dúzias de árvores meninas e senhoras. Na descida da avenida Barão de Studart, a alguns passos do Atlântico que é parte de nós no mundo também pelas beiradas do mar.

Um convite generoso para olhar a série Paradisus sem o julgamento de um juiz da arte concebida, que nem sou. Talvez pelos universos cruzados com a floresta urbana e de manguezal do Parque do Cocó. Um Éden público, coletivo, visível e invisível.

Sérgio Helle concebeu um paraíso de suas entranhas em quatro anos e ainda vem vindo. Não quero ser repórter. Apenas experimentador do que é gênesis nele e me floresce.

Paradisus, lugar concebido com e sem pecado, parte de um molho de folhas secas da umbaúba ou torém. A planta que, mesmo morta, tem chá, remoça os rins e foge com a anúria. Árvore-de-preguiça, baibeira e dita ainda árvore da vida.

Não são botânicos e coloniais os registros do artista. Não é o documento da natureza em cartesiano e, sim, a possibilidade de enxergar o paraíso do rés do chão para cima. De parte que caiu na terra, em folhas, no tempo de despencar e ser ressurgência.

Cheia de vida na aparente morte natural e na permissão para ser outra narrativa, nova história, material para sedimento, textura diversa. É a criação ao redor sem pensar em ser o Éden. Sagrado, sim, porque é criação.

Pois o levei, como troca, ao Cocó. Na floresta de mangue e tabuleiro que está ali, acuada por prédios, lojas, shoppings centers, escolas, oficinas... Que a gente passa por lá e não o vê. Ou não o enxerga do jeito que é ou que pode ser. Ou que não existe, mesmo, e é apenas o que restou de algum pintura do começo de tudo em algum tempo bem para trás.

No mangue do Cocó, os insetos, os vermes, os pássaros perfuradores dos troncos caídos dão outras cores e rumos à natureza. Depois de um tempo, anos a fio, as árvores gigantes - não suportando mais os ventos fortes, a partir de agosto, e a lama fluída - não sustentam as raízes.

E as árvores caem pesadas de tempo com suas folhas verdes e, daqui a um ínfimo, secarão. Também desafiando a permanência. Sérgio Helle teria visto isso nas “formas orgânicas, das folhas ressecadas e retorcidas”, principalmente nos galhos da umbaúba? Então deu cores às formas mortas, mas carregadas de vitalidade e à espera de um olhar restaurador da matéria em estado de outra possibilidade.

Dali para frente. Dos buquês de folhas de uma nova espécie abstrata que foi tomando perspectiva singular e rebentou viçosa nas infogravuras. Serão quais essas espécies germinadas e paridas em Paradisus?

Qual cheiro têm? Que outros seres se compartilham nelas? Como se mutuam com o espectador depois de criadas? Que bioma terá criado Sérgio Helle em Paradisus? Só olhando com um tempo estendido da permissão para buscar o que for. Deixar-se ir por uma floresta de folhas raras e belíssimas na nova mata concebida...

O sagrado, mais como declaração amorosa à natureza e à fluidez de seus ciclos, é declaração em paixão do artesão-criador. Disso que não é a Caatinga, não é o Mangue, não é a Mata Atlântica, não é o Cerrado nem a Amazônia.

Mas estão todos lá também, depende de quem se deixar ir por Paradisus. É o que trago de árvores em mim e vou indo. Em sementes misturadas, rebrotando ou fazendo nascer o que não existia.

Sérgio Helle ainda foi ver a Amazônia. Atrás de surgirem outras biotas pela arte. Quem sabe a mata escura e acompanhada por rios, igarapés, gentes e bichos com instinto de floresta.

Ou então foi sarar, descansar da criação depois de Paradisus. Quanto dura uma série nascida do tamanho que já é? Sabe-se lá! É o mesmo que ter a pretensão de dizer da mata decifrada. Pode até ter uma pincelada derradeira, mas ainda brota. É o que está dentro. Pode até hibernar, mas rebenta quando for para ser.

Qual Paradisus terá criado Sérgio Helle com a umbaúba e outros buquês de folhas recolhidas ou trazidas por amigos? Não está ali somente uma das espécies da árvore da Cecropia hololeuca.

Que extrato dessa planta pioneira da Mata Atlântica foi recriado pelo artista? Pela extensão de seu corpo em galhos, troncos, flores, seres que neles trocam? Seu corpo de arte são também solo, mata ciliar, beirada da floresta, pastagens, beira de estradas e pomares onde o torém encontra lugar para surgir.

O pé do torém é, talvez também, um ponto de partida das memórias do criador. Uma árvore que pode subir até 10 metros de altura num pé de muro de quintal. Tronco oco, teso, reto, sem tantos galhos até a copa.

Das folhas em formato de trevo medonho (longipecioladas), ásperas, duras, sem cheiro arrebatante. E frutos, em cachos, cheios de pássaros semeadores que fizeram o favor de dispersar e fazer nascer em quase todo canto.

Sérgio Helle refaz o que existe e planta outras espécies. Medicinais? Pode ser.

E pela fruição. Faz bem ao corpo sentar diante da tela, ou em pé mesmo, e se deixar pelo que foi criado e pode ser outra floresta ou jardim em cada um.

Para entrar em Paradisus, eu acho e reescrevo Manoel de Barros, é recomendável que se entre em estado de árvore. “É preciso partir de um torpor animal de lagarto às três horas da tarde, no mês de agosto”.

“Em dois anos a inércia e o mato vão crescer em nossa boca. Sofreremos alguma decomposição lírica até o mato sair na voz”.

“Hoje desenho o cheiro das árvores”.

Is there work of art in dry leaves fallen from the torém tree or in the pink shade of the wide-open flowers of the cannonball tree? It may be that things “do not exist” and, once someone has seen them, they awaken our senses.

That is when other people’s eyes help us see other possibilities.

The eyes... although they see everything, either in the digital frenzy or in the urban blindness, they see almost nothing or pause on what is repeated.

Even looking a thousand times, they miss the innumerous possibilities available.

Well… first I went to Sérgio Helle’s building – an old apartment with a backyard filled with more than two dozen trees, both old and young, located downhill Barão de Studart avenue and a few steps from the Atlantic Ocean, which makes us part of the world along the edge of the sea.

That was a generous invitation to see the “Paradisus” series without the evaluation of a judge of the conceived art, which I am not. That was probably because of the cross worlds between the urban forest and the mangrove in Cocó Park – a public, collective, visible and invisible Eden.

Sérgio Helle has conceived an inner paradise in four years and there is more to come. I do not mean to be a reporter, but only to experiment the genesis in him that blooms in me.

“Paradisus”, a place conceived with and without sin, started in a bundle of dry leaves from the umbauba or torém tree. Even dead, the plant gives away tea, invigorates the kidney, and does away with anuria. It is the lazy tree, baibeira, and also called the tree of life.

The artist’s records are neither botanic nor colonial. It is not the Cartesian document of nature, but the possibility of seeing paradise from the ground floor up – from the part that fell on the ground in the form of leaves when the time came and became resurgence.

Full of life in the apparent natural death and in the permission to become another narrative, a new story, material for sediment, different texture. It is the surrounding creation with no intention of becoming the Eden; sacred, because it is creation.

Well, I took it, as an exchange, to Cocó Park – in the mangrove and tableland vegetation there, cornered by buildings, shops, malls, schools, workplaces…

We go past and cannot see it, or do not see it the way it is or the way it might be. Or perhaps it does not exist, and it is only what was left from a painting of how it all began some long, long time ago.

In the Cocó Park mangrove, the insects, the worms, and birds perforating the fallen trunks confer other colors and offer another course to nature.

After some time, years on end, the gigantic trees – bending in strong winds that start blowing in August and the fluid mud – have their roots ripped out.

The trees fall heavily with the passing of time, their leaves still green, but which will soon dry, also defying permanence. Did Sérgio Helle see this in the “organic forms of the dried and twisted leaves”, mainly in the umbauba branches? He then bestowed color on the dead forms, although filled with vitality, awaiting a restoring eye to change the matter into another possibility.

From there onwards. The bouquet of leaves from a new abstract species started taking on a particular perspective and sprouted lushly in the digital art images. What species are those germinated and born in “Paradisus”?

What do they smell like? What other beings share them? What kind of exchange is there with the spectator after they have been created? What biome will have Sérgio Helle created in “Paradisus”? One must look extensively in search of whatever there may be; wonder around a forest of rare and beautiful leaves in the newly conceived forest…

That which is sacred, mainly as a declaration of love to nature and its fluid cycles, is a passionate declaration by the creative craftsman. This is not the Caatinga, nor the Mangrove, nor the Mata Atlântica, nor the Cerrado, nor the Amazon.

But they are all there. It depends on who is being guided by “Paradisus”. It is the trees I carry in me. It is the mixed seeds, re-sprouting or giving birth to what did not exist before.

Still, Sérgio Helle visited the Amazon, looking for biotas for the art - the dark forest with rivers, creeks, people and animals with a forest instinct.

Or may he went there to heal, to rest after creating “Paradisus”. How long can a series already born the size it is last? Who knows! It is the same as daring to say that of the deciphered forest. There may even be a final brushstroke; yet, there is still life. It is in the inside. It may hibernate, but it will sprout at the right time.

Which “Paradisus” will Sérgio Helle have created with the umbauba and other leave bouquets collected or brought by friends? What we find there is more than only one of the species of the Cecropia hololeuca tree.

Which extract of this indigenous plant of the Mata Atlântica has been recreated by the artist? Through the extension of its body in branches, trunks, flowers, and beings that touch it? Its art body is also the soil, the riparian forest, the forest edge, pastures, roadsides and orchards, where the torém tree finds a place to grow.

The torém tree is probably also a starting point for the creator’s memory.

A tree that can reach 10 meters by a wall in the backyard. A hollow, strong, straight trunk, not having many branches up to the canopy.

Its leaves have the shape of a scary clover (petiolate), rough, hard, with no rapturous smell. Its fruit come in bunches, with birds spreading the seeds and helping make them grow almost everywhere.

Sérgio Helle remakes what already exists and plants other species. Medicinal plants? Maybe. And through fruition. One feels good sitting in front of the painting, or even standing, letting the creation take them away to which might be another forest or garden inside each one.

To enter “Paradisus”, or so I believe and quote Manoel de Barros, it is advisable to get into a tree state of mind. “One must start from a lizard’s animal lethargy at three in the afternoon in the month of August.”

“In two years, inertia and shrubland will have grown in our mouth. We will suffer from some kind of lyrical decomposition until the shrub comes out in our voices”.

“Today, I draw the smell of the trees”.

With nothing more to say, I hope Sérgio Helle will forever bloom in his lifetime cycles.

LILIAN FRAIJI Amazônia, Paisagem invisível Parece uma grande ironia considerar invisível um dos principais ícones naturais do planeta, a Amazônia. Todos nós temos uma memória sobre esse lugar, o conhecemos, o projetamos, o imaginamos, sem mesmo termos estado ali. E é essa construção mental coletiva que torna essa paisagem tão real. Apesar das transformações geológicas da terra, ocasionada pela ação humana, esse lugar natural ainda existe e, sobretudo, resiste, muito além do nosso imaginário.

O que é pouco narrado, ou ainda silenciado, é como a Amazônia é usurpada.

Dentro da maior Floresta do mundo existe uma paisagem representada pelo desenvolvimento de grandes infraestruturas e megaobras, expansão da monocultura da soja e da pecuária extensiva, aniquilamento de culturas milenares e exploração de recursos hídricos e minerais; uma paisagem invisível, construída por um ciclo de extermínio da vida.

Colônia de um país cujo crescimento foi baseado na exploração de commodities, calcado em trabalho não pago da natureza e de certas populações humanas, a Amazônia foi condenada a ocupar um lugar secundário na economia nacional e global, ainda que forneça os recursos primários para boa parte do capital econômico, e os recursos principais para a sobrevivência humana: a água e o ar.

A invisibilidade das ameaças à paisagem da Amazônia perpassa as questões das maldições dos recursos naturais1, intervenções no espaço necessariamente locais, para também obedecer às dinâmicas globais como o aquecimento do planeta e sua condição de fenômeno massivamente distribuído no tempo e no espaço.

Omitido por questões políticas, o aquecimento global é um fenômeno físico real, cuja materialidade não pode ser diretamente vista, sentida ou ouvida; um hyperobjeto que transforma silenciosamente a paisagem, com graves consequências para as Florestas Tropicais, altamente vulneráveis às alterações mínimas de temperatura.

Um dos resultados do aquecimento global na Amazônia é a perda da biomassa pela alteração no processo de fotossíntese. Quando submetidas a níveis muito altos de temperatura, as folhas transformam suas enzimas e proteínas, levando a suspensão da produção da clorofila. Temperatura constante acima de 40˚C, condição esta cada vez mais frequente na Amazônia, pode ser fatal para a grande maioria das plantas.

A recente história da Amazônia, marcada pela transformação biofísica da Floresta e pela política de violência contra o meio ambiente, nos leva a considerar um novo sistema de valor que rompa com o antropocentrismo moderno e o antagonismo entre natureza e cultura. Fazer ver, sentir e ouvir a Floresta Amazônica considerando uma nova relação entre humanos e não humanos.

Nesse sentido, o programa de imersão artística LabVerde funciona como uma plataforma multidisciplinar para o desenvolvimento de conhecimento crítico sobre a natureza e a ecologia. Artistas, cientistas e outros agentes do conhecimento se juntam para reconhecer e narrar a natureza, na tentativa de criar novas maneiras de existir, de se relacionar com o meio natural, e, ainda, de especular sobre futuros possíveis.

O termo refere-se à economia de países em desenvolvimento cuja abundância de recursos naturais aumentou a probabilidade de baixo crescimento econômico e alto índices de pobreza.

Coexistir e tornar visível outra lógica de existir no mundo implica uma transformação no projeto de construção social da realidade, para uma visão biocêntrica de mundo. Baseado no conceito de paisagem ecológica², os artistas passam a entender seu corpo como uma extensão da Floresta, deixando de representar a paisagem para ser o tempo e o espaço da Amazônia.

A vivência intensiva no campo expandido da Floresta faz com que os artistas experimentem outra dimensão do tempo. Um tempo marcado por processos de mutações fluídas, cujo ritmo e duração obedecem ao crescimento biológico dos organismos, completamente distinto da Grande Aceleração3 contemporânea. Os artistas passam a entender primeiramente seu corpo como organismo biológico para então reverenciar as distintas profundidades de tempo das formas vivas.

Dentre as investigações artísticas existe uma preocupação em estender a condição de humano ao não humano, reconhecendo-o como cocriador do mundo. Essa percepção da natureza é oposta à visão estética tradicional e à dicotomia entre sujeito e objeto, no qual a natureza é absorvida pelo artista e transformada em seu objeto. Com a aproximação entre natureza e cultura, os artistas estão interessados em como os seres são sujeitos na construção de paisagens, transformando e moldando o espaço em que coabitam.

Diante da crise ambiental, a arte se configura como um importante veículo para questionar e imaginar o destino da vida. Especular sobre o futuro do planeta questiona o homem como força geofísica e as condições limites de sua própria existência. Nessa perspectiva, o artista então explora as condições materiais que sutilmente vão substituindo a vida e transformando os recursos naturais em bens virtuais, híbridos e artificiais. ² Paisagem Ecológica É definida por um mosaico heterogêneo formado pela interação entre unidades, onde a heterogeneidade existe dependendo de um fator, de acordo com um observador e de uma escala específica de observação.

3Grande Aceleração Também chamado de Antropoceno, refere-se ao período atual em que vivemos, marcado pela escala e velocidade com que as atividades humanas, decorrentes do sistema econômico global, transformam o Sistema da Terra, com o aumento do efeito estufa, acidificação dos oceanos, desflorestamento e deterioração da biodiversidade.

Entre os trabalhos há ainda uma forte necessidade em identificar, medir, classificar e produzir novos acervos da natureza pelas artes. Embora se aproximem de um gesto convencional do fazer científico, essas práticas obedecem às poéticas livres, em um intento, às vezes até obsessivo, de compreender as formas, funções e relações da natureza pela análise mais aprofundada de seus indivíduos. A repetição do gesto também caracteriza a necessidade de produzir memória, seja para possibilitar o acesso à essência de um conteúdo ou para assegurar sua existência em um futuro cada vez mais incerto.

Criadores de distintos países, histórias e culturas lançam seu olhar sobre a Floresta, contribuindo para a construção de um conjunto plural de linguagens e narrativas sobre a Amazônia, que se desdobram em pintura, desenho, poesia, dança, vídeo, fotografia, performance, moda, música, cheiros e sons. Percepções, técnicas, gestos e representações simbólicas que potencializam a forma e o conteúdo de um ecossistema para assim ser compreendido e, fundamentalmente, valorizado.

Lilian Fraiji Curadora e ativista cultural, idealizadora e coordenadora do programa LabVerde, promove a união entre pessoas, de diferentes países e que atuam em distintas disciplinas, para construir outras formas de representar e conviver com a natureza, apostando na construção de novas paisagens e novos modos de interagir com o mundo.

LILIAN FRAIJI Amazon, Invisible landscape It is extremely ironic that one of the main natural icons of the planet, the Amazon, may be considered invisible. We all have a memory about this place; we know it, we project it, we imagine it, even without having been there. It is this collective mental construction that makes this landscape so real. Despite the geological transformations of the earth caused by human action, this natural place still exists and, even more, resists, far beyond our imagination.

What is seldom told, or even silenced, is the way in which the Amazon is usurped. Within the world’s largest forest there is a landscape represented by the development of large infrastructure and mega works, expansion of the soy monoculture and extensive cattle ranching, annihilation of millennial cultural practices and exploitation of hydraulic and mineral resources; an invisible landscape, built by a cycle of extermination.

As a colony of a country whose growth has been driven by the exploitation of commodities, based on the unpaid toil of nature and certain human populations, the Amazon has been condemned to occupy a secondary place in the national and global economy, although it provides the primary resources for the majority of the country’s economic capital, and the main resources for human survival: water and air.

The invisibility of threats to the Amazon landscape involves issues such as the so-called resource curse1, the need of intervention in certain places, and world dynamics such as the global warming phenomenon, widely distributed in time and space.

Omitted by political ideology, global warming is a real physical phenomenon whose substance cannot be directly seen, felt or heard. A hyperobject that quietly transforms the landscape, with severe consequences for Tropical Forests, which are highly vulnerable to minimal changes in temperature.

One of the results of global warming in the Amazon is the loss of biomass due to changes in the photosynthesis process. When submitted to very high temperature levels, leaves alter their enzymes and proteins, leading to the suspension of chlorophyll production. Temperatures constantly above 40°C (an increasingly frequent condition in the Amazon) could be fatal to the vast majority of plants.

The Amazon’s recent history, marked by the biophysical transformation of the Forest and the policy of violence against the environment, leads us to consider a new value system that breaks with modern anthropocentrism and the antagonism between nature and culture. A system that enables us to see, feel and listen to the Amazon Forest, guided by a new relationship between humans and nonhumans.

In this sense, LabVerde’s artistic immersion program functions as a multidisciplinary platform for the development of critical thought about nature and ecology. Artists, scientists and other practitioners come together to recognize nature and tell its stories, in an attempt to create new ways of existing and interacting with the natural environment, as well as speculate on possible futures.

1Resource curse

The term refers to the fact that developing economies with an abundance of natural resources tend to show increased probability of low economic growth and high poverty rates.

Coexisting and providing visibility to a different logic of existence in the world implies a transformation from the concept of social construction of reality, to a biocentric worldview. Based on the meaning of the ecological landscape², artists come to understand their bodies as extensions of the Forest, no longer representing the landscape, but becoming the time and space of the Amazon.

The immersion within the expanded field of the Forest allows the artists to experience another dimension of time. A time marked by fluid mutation processes, whose rhythm and duration obey the biological growth of organisms, completely different to the contemporary Great Acceleration3.

Artists initially come to understand their bodies as biological organisms, which leads them to perceive and revere the different depths of time of all living forms.

Within the artistic investigations, care is taken to extend the human condition to nonhumans, recognizing them as co-creators of the world.

This perception of nature is opposed to the traditional aesthetic view and the dichotomy between subject and object, whereby nature is absorbed by the artist and transformed into their object. With the proximity between nature and culture, artists are interested in the ways in which living organisms are subjects in the construction of landscapes, transforming and shaping the space in which they coexist.

In light of the environmental crisis, art is an important vehicle for questioning and imagining the destiny of life. Speculating about the future of the planet sheds light on humans as a geophysical force and the limiting conditions of their own existence. From this perspective, the artist explores the material circumstances that subtly replace life and transform natural resources into virtual, hybrid and artificial commodities. ² Ecological Landscape Is defined as a heterogeneous mosaic formed by interacting units, in which heterogeneity exists at least for one factor, according to one observer and at a specific observation scale.

3Great Acceleration Also called Anthropocene refers to the scale and speed with which human activities, arising from the global economic system, transform the Earth System, with an increase in the greenhouse effect, acidification of the oceans, deforestation and deterioration of biodiversity.

Among the presented works, it is possible to perceive a strong need to identify, measure, classify and produce new archives of nature by means of the arts. Although such practices somewhat emulate a conventional scientific gesture, they conform to free poetics, in an attempt, at times obsessive, to understand the forms, functions, and relations of nature through in-depth analysis of its individuals. The repetition of this gesture also characterizes the need to build memory, not only to enable access to the essence of a content, but also to ensure its existence in an increasingly uncertain future.

Creators from different countries, backgrounds and cultures cast their eyes over the Forest, contributing to the construction of a plural ensemble of languages and narratives about the Amazon, which unfold in the form of painting, drawing, poetry, dance, video, photography, performance, fashion, music, smells and sounds. Perceptions, techniques, gestures and symbolic representations enhance the form and content of an ecosystem so it can be understood and, fundamentally, valued.

Lilian Fraiji Curator and cultural activist, creator and coordinator of the LabVerde program, it fosters the union among people, from different countries and who work in different areas, in order to build other forms of representing and living with nature, betting on the construction of new landscapes and new ways of interacting with the world.

I started the Paradisus series with a leaf of the embauba, a tree also known as torém.

The embauba leaf is extremely important for the reforestation of devastated areas. It grows fast in areas where seeds are sown by bats. Having heard that while I was in Amazonia opened a different door to my work.

I was born in Cariri, a region in Ceará state which also shows us the network of life in its complexity and time span. The Ararip GeoPark embodies this understanding.

At the LabVerde, after three days of acquaintanceship, each artist presents their work to the group – what they did, how they did it. On the penultimate day, each participant presents what they plan to do after the immersion. I then presented a sketch of the idea you can see accomplished in the prints on Cariri stone, abundant in the area of the Araripe Plateau and Sedimentary Basin, two landmarks of the region.

The Cariri stone is, we may say, the support for the mass production of fossils found in the south of Ceará state – documents about the life of Earth, on Earth.

Dry, totally dry... that’s how I found the first torém leaf which starts the Paradisus series. It now appears on the Cariri stone - and it will always appear - as a symbol of resistance and of the force of nature. A fossil in time reversal.

Note: Cariri Stone is the name given to one of the nine sites of the Araripe Geopark in the south of Ceará state. The Araripe Sedimentary Basin borders the states of Piauí, Pernambuco and Paraíba. It comprises the municipalities of Barbalha, Crato – the city where Sérgio Helle was born, Missão Velha, Nova Olinda and Santana do Cariri.

Comecei a série Paradisus a partir de uma folha da embaúba, árvore também conhecida como torém.

A embaúba é uma árvore importantíssima no reflorestamento de áreas devastadas. Ela cresce rapidamente em áreas semeadas por morcegos, carregadores de sementes. Ouvir isso estando na Amazônia abriu um outro caminho no meu trabalho.

Nasci no Cariri, uma região do Ceará que também nos mostra a teia da vida em sua complexidade e amplitude de tempo. O GeoPark Araripe concretiza essa compreensão.

No LabVerde, depois de três dias de convivência, cada artista apresenta seu trabalho para o grupo. O que faz, como faz. No penúltimo dia, cada um apresenta o que vai fazer depois da imersão. Apresentei, então, um esboço da ideia que você pode ver realizada nas impressões em pedra Cariri, abundante na área da Chapada e da Bacia Sedimentar do Araripe, marcos da região.

A pedra Cariri é o suporte que guarda a imensa produção de fósseis encontrada no Sul do Ceará. Documentos sobre a vida da Terra, na Terra.

Encontrei seca, ressecada, a primeira folha de torém que dá inicio à série Paradisus. Ela surge agora na pedra Cariri, e vai ressurgir sempre, como um símbolo da resistência, da força da natureza. Um fóssil em tempo contrário.

Nota: Pedra Cariri é o nome de um dos nove sítios do Geopark Araripe, no Sul do Ceará.

A área da Bacia Sedimentar do Araripe faz limite com os estados do Piauí, Pernambuco e Paraíba. Abrange os municípios Barbalha, Crato – cidade onde Sérgio Helle nasceu -, Missão Velha, Nova Olinda e Santana do Cariri.

Durante décadas os desenhos dos artistas eram indispensáveis à ciência botânica. Mas não é esse o meu interesse. De registro. A natureza é a maior referência, é inspiradora, fantástica. Mas não basta. Gosto de criar outras realidades, onde a vida se renova, a fantasia se incorpora, as formas se indefinem. Criar algo que não existe o torna real. E desse poder eu não abro mão.

For decades, the drawings of the artists were indispensable to botany. But that is not my interest – of making a record. Nature is the greatest reference. It is inspiring, fantastic. But it is not enough. I like to create different realities, where life is renewed, fantasy is incorporated, forms are defined. Creating something that does not exist makes it real.
