Aggregated assault is a short exercise which implies the use of 2D cutting fabrication

Aggregation is the main method which allows for an infinite accumulation of discreet elements. Different aspects such as scale, geometry, pattern, joinery, and light are to be considered.

The exercise encourages quick testings to examine and develop the design of the discreet element.

The final aggregation is a temporary hanging structure composed by 270 cardboard components.

This exercise introduces the concept of how a line system can influence machining motions. The goal of this exercise is to explore and understand different patterns and textures through controlled machining operations.

The big idea focuses on the concept of figure/ground as a strategy to create new images and surfaces by exploring with different materials and layering.

Machining:

Laser cutting: cut, score, raster

CNC router

Software: Rhino, Grasshopper, CAM, Illustrator, Photoshop

The project seeks the notion of ‘Structure as Space’- the space where a filmic intangible phenomenal atmosphere resides. The patterned surface is reevaluated by gami (paper) with the mechanisms of ori (to fold) and kiri (to cut), performing as threshold and structure.

Precise diagramming and practice of origami and kirigami reveals the embedded structure of folded plates.

Program: The physical ground of the project is in Denver Colorado. The studio showcases the dynamics of two different structural systems: regularity (parking) and irregularity (theatre), and contextual relationships to the Denver Film Society and its annual film festival - Starz Denver Film Festival.

Site: Manhattan, New York

Professor: Christian Pongratz

The project aims to investigate variability with regards to materials concerning building envelopes, geometry concerning spatial ideas and innovative living-forms based on light efficiencies. The project is composed by three design research investigations: Interior_ understanding the interrelationship created between shape, envelope, and interior space and applying and modifying the effect on natural daylight and natural ventilation.

Formwork_ understanding specific modeling tactics of early shape implications for MEP and structure.

Skin_ understanding building envelopes materials, ornament, and screens.

Program: The building proposal consists of an ECO_ boutique hotel with additional mix use in Chelsea NYC, close to the Highline.

Field measures: Haptic registration of Bukchon and collection of data from analyzing spacial sequence, patterns, compositional arrangement, texture, form and urban qualities (fig. 6.01).

Physical interpretation of field measurement:

Two quadrant surfaces are cut into three smaller surfaces to allow more movement and flexibility to manipulate directionality and path.

Each of these surfaces are interlaced and then weaved, changing the technique in which the volumetric surfaces are displaced. Each of the surfaces are cut into three sections making individual strips that that can be pushed or pulled in any direction (fig. 6.02).

Set in the north-east Asian megacity of Seoul, South Korea, the studio is initiated to generate sensitive questions concerning current large scale development strategies of this enormous megalopolis.

The goal of the project is to investigate how architecture influences the city by Seoulspecific identities. By traveling to and working within Seoul, the studio is fully engaged and establishes a sensible understanding of diverse urban patterns while simultaneously responding architecturally within particular cultural, social, political, and religious pressures. The inquiry testing begins with a series of analytical studies of composition, form, and spatial qualities, and use in diverse conditions.
