WITH MATERIALS

The entire Design process has been accompanied with finding appropriate references that present similairties and inspiration in the preservation, architectural and urban design related elements of for the following design part of the project. Some referneces are great examples of how materials and facades can be preserved while introducing and completing the project with a modern material. Readability has been an important criteria for us when choosing these references.

In addition, there is refernces that succeed in intoducing a newly designed volume to the site that manages to not disturb the historic elements but contribute to the whole urban situation, which is something we are aiming to do in our design in the consequent step.

Furthermore, some of the refernce projects include elements that have been a great inspiration of how to treat boundaries betwwen the urban space and the project area and how to build relationships between the project and other historic buildings in an historic urban core.

4. URBAN STRATEGY & ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

The main aim of the project is to counteract the abondonment happening in the direct neighbourhood of the beautiful historic piazza by unlocking the potential of the lacuna site. The lacuna site becomes a key player in a network of cultural heritage buildings as well as furniture design related buildings, workshops and showrooms/museums. on the horizontal axis leading to the old piazza in the core of meda, such a function is fully missing. Strategically, the Lacuna Site will therefore be the first and most important link between the more modern part and the historic center of meda,

At the moment the entire site is closed and not accessible. By opening up the site to the public, creating a public space on the main horizontal axis and by introducing a new design that creates a visual realtionship to the old town piazza, the project will change that current situation.

In addition, while carefully preserving the most important elements of the ruins, modern materials and functions will bring the site back to life. The casa di ringhiera as a main design driving element have led us to creating a walkway connecting the entire site. As the history of the casa di ringhiera suggersts, there is a lott of commonly used functions included in the project. On the ground floor there is a cafe, exhibition space and a storage foor furniture making materials. In the heart of the project, the newly introduced Volume that functions as a membrane on the site, a workshop has been introduced. The street space is connected to the site with a filter, opening the space whil defining it. Visitors will be tempted to enter the site when discovering the commercial space on the street corner. The highlight on site is the roof bar, that creates a visual connection to the old town square and leaves visitors curious to walk on further and visit the heart of Meda.
